You're supposed to admire the artist's painting, not his palette! I'm surprised they even have a picture of it for us to regard. Much less blending than I would have expected, so maybe he was working on an abstract piece with bold, solid lines. Posted by: Art Moron at December 16, 2022 09:37 AM (Foryq) 26

Some pretty serious intersectionality at work here (not to mention that Holland took down the traffic signals at intersections). Tulips bubbling, check; no livestock to pollute those waters, check; Wind Power, check; dykes. Throw in a missing Roman eagle, hash and some skaters, and you hit the 'Fecta.

When first looking at an Impressionist painting it just seems like blotches of color. But the longer I study it the more detail and creativity emerge. It's such a change from the more natural appearance and detail of the Pre-Rafaelites, it takes getting used to. I still prefer Maxfield Parrish and NC Wyeth but Monet deserves my attention, as well.

“I only identified about 350 people who were involved in the trade, although I’m sure that number is on the low side because I didn't look at every town,” says Goldgar. “Those people were very often connected with each other in various ways, through a profession, family or religion.” What really surprised Goldgar, given Mackay’s tales of financial ruin, was that she wasn’t able to find a single case of an individual who went bankrupt after the tulip market crashed. Nice. Remind me to tell you my story about the little old man my parents met when I was working in The Hague one Summer. Screw it, it's short: While I was at work, the parents were wandering around The Hague playing tourist and looking for a particular museum. None of the younger people knew where it was, so they asked an older gent on the street. They started out by apologizing in English that they didn't speak any Dutch, and Mr. Little Old Man, Dutch himself, replied "who speaks Dutch?" as if speaking Dutch was something only the insane did. Small town Iowa police chief charged with lying to ATF to get 90 machine guns for department with 3 officers Was that wrong? I feel like, if someone had told me it was wrong, I wouldnt have done it...
...according to prosecutors, weapons were resold for profit through Wendt's private gun store or another store owned by a friend who also is facing charges. According to court filings and a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Wendt used his position as police chief to obtain 10 machine guns for the official use of the police department, but later resold at least six of those weapons for "significant profit". Prosecutors say Wendt sought to purchase or demonstrate approximately 90 machine guns between July 2018 and August 2022. Some of the weapons were used for public machine gun shoots, where Wendt and Williams charged customers money to be able to fire the weapons. The indictment describes the firearms as fully automatic weapons not legally available to the public, including an M60 machine gun, a belt-fed weapon widely used by the U.S. military since the Vietnam war that was purportedly obtained for official use by the Adair Police Department. The original driver behind the impressionist paintings was the placement of colors next to each other to cause an effect of "vibration" thereby making the painting come more to life. 192 I think it's supposed to be an insult to the Dutch. "Dutch" meaning "Not". So a Dutch Treat is, essentially, not a treat. "How about I treat you to a nice you buy your own damn lunch today, hey?"
Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 16, 2022 10:23 AM It is an insult, but I think that one is implying Dutch are stingy with money. Iowa has a large Dutch population (centered in Pella, and a few other places), and there is a stereotype of older Dutch people being tight with money. I want more machine guns out there, not less. But I want them in the hands of private citizens, not only in the hands of the cops. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards ---------------------------- Police can 'borrow' machine guns from Fedgov but cannot sell them to third parties. They must either retain them for their own use or send them back to Fedgov. But, I am not as bothered by the Hughes Amendment as I am about a lot of other state and federal restrictions. I think getting silencers off the NFA would be a more useful thing for the masses and reduce hearing injuries. In a lot of countries where firearms are closely regulated, silencers are treated as over the counter items because they reduce noise for the shooter and neighbors. Individuals can buy machine guns but they are just really expensive and a range toy/investment for the most part. Using them as a range toy gets really expensive really fast as you convert cash into empty brass at a fast clip. Posted by: whig at December 16, 2022 10:36 AM (bDjBG) 256

The issue of full-auto machine guns for cops rests on the issue of what a cop is supposed to be doing. It hinges on the understanding that there is a difference between a military force and a policing force. If you're in a situation where sustained suppressive fire is necessary, you are no longer Policing. You're in combat. And if the argument is that a combat situation might arise in which a cop has the need to have sustained suppressive fire to ensure their safety during a potential combat, then why do Police get that right to defense but no one else does? Why does their desire to "make it home" outweigh mine?
It's not a trivial question. Obviously, police require some means of force projection, or else no one would ever get arrested. But it's also wrong to place everyone into the paradigm of "Cops" and "Bad Guys", where if you're not a Cop, you're a Bad Guy. Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 16, 2022 10:42 AM (9UlRk) 291
What I learned through experience is that lint from synthetic fabrics does not burn very well. So I just use lint from the towel and jeans loads. Posted by: Emmie Lint from synthetic fabrics, being polymers, fuses (melts) prior to burning and thus is not preferred to lint from cotton products. In a similar vein, self-starting charcoal briquettes are inferior to regular charcoal briquettes, which both provide more heat per unit mass and also burn longer. It is the accelerants which mess up the former. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at December 16, 2022 10:42 AM (pNxlR) 292

Ganstas have no problem confronting police and so on and have no fear of being arrested with the charges later dismissed or pleaded to minimal time served. Normal people do. Cops view their job primarily as catching crooks and since the longer that they are in the job, they often come to believe that everyone is a crook because of selection bias. So, an average street cop does not prioritize protecting your rights because there is no incentive to do so. Any mistakes can be written off as US v Leon--good faith exceptions. "Make sure everything on the plate isn't the same color. Especially not yellow."
The same rule would seem to be appropriate for art, especially painting. Speaking of foreign NBA players, the 30-for-30 episode -- yeah, before I quit watching ESPN and pretty much all sports -- "Once Brothers" by (Serbian) Vlade Divac on his relationship with (Croatian) Drazen Petrovic was really well-done and heartbreaking.

An hour or so to take care of the slush.
Probably 30 minutes shovelling the 1" of slush; and a freaking half hour to do the 'salting' that should take 10 minutes because the freaking 'salt' bag I bought last spring, despite being in the traditional yellow with black stripes & print bag for 100% salt, was 50-50 dirt and salt. [And more like 90-10 dirt to salt from what I saw.] So I spent 20 extra minutes dumping the fine sand into the jug I use to spread real road-salt and that weighs 2 or 3 times more than the same volume of salt.
