Daily Tech News 9 December 2022

Top Story

  • How much RAM do you need in your Windows PC? Don't ask a journalist, they only use Notepad. (ZDNet)

    Get a load of this:
The time when more than 8GB of RAM becomes useful and starts paying for itself is when you're running several resource-heavy applications simultaneously -- especially high-end image or 4K+ video processing, CAD, or 3D modeling.
Yeah when you're running Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, and Maya at the same time, 8GB might get a bit limiting. 64GB might also get a bit limiting. People who run that sort of workload tend to buy systems with 256GB or more.

I happened to reboot my laptop this morning. By the time it had finished booting, before I opened a single application, 8GB of RAM was already in use.

  • Two of the three new servers have been deployed, just waiting on the third now. Those have 128GB of RAM each. 128GB is probably enough.

I now have an 84TB RAID-Z3 array with gzip compression and block deduplication. I have about 7TB (already gzipped and deduped) to copy onto it, so it should last a good long while.

Tech News

  • Locating the new stealth bomber using the stars in the sky, JPEG metadata, and guesswork. (Twitter)

Looking at the photo, my first thought is there's no way that contains enough information to triangulate, even with a timestamp. And it doesn't. But the arc of possible matching locations in the United States comes near Edwards AFB, and if you look at all the buildings at Edwards in Google Maps there's a clear match to the photo.
I'm sure this entire process could be done with just stars and no google maps as well
Dude, using just stars they were lucky to discover America, which is somewhat larger than one aircraft hangar at Edwards AFB.

  • Part two of the Twitter Files is out. (Twitter)

Here we see the usual suspects working to twist the rules to justify silencing inconvenient truths. And they were dumb enough to write it all down.

Nothing we didn't already know in general, but with more specifics to throw in the face of anyone insisting it didn't happen.

Like Jack Dorsey, who was CEO at the time, and testified before Congress that none of this was taking place.

14 My Surface Pro 8 after booting up eats 7GB of RAM. On the other I hand I had a different PC with 4GB and it worked fine as long as fine means running a browser, doing some email, office stuff - the things that computing mortals do every day. My Photoshop box has 32gb and it can handle 2GB files OK with a crappy video card installed. I am going to sniff at the machine after the new GPU shows up and see how it does. I may stuff another 32GB into it because I jealous of people that actually need 128 GB of RAM, so there is that consideration.

20 I almost feel like there's a system installed in computers that multiplies the amount of ram you need, based on what you have.

So if you're using 2 GB, and have 8 GB, it'll multiply it by 4 so you hit your limit. That same 2 GB on a computer with 64GB, well it'll magically just happen to need 64GB now.

For the Twitter stuff. Musk needs to release all raw info, as it would be interesting to see if any political candidates were nerfed around the time they were running, and if that nerfing is tied to the time of a specific tweet or if they just shadow banned/throttled them just because they were of a specific party. Because most of the banning of media/general public will be hard to punish, even the Hunter Laptop stuff, but it's down they were targeting certain candidates, then that should fall under some federal offense, be it tampering, electioneering, or some kind of illegal contribution.

25 Morning, all! 'Tis Friday at last! I'm up with coffee and kittens.

Whenever I see "RAID" in a computer context, I think immediately of the old TV spots for the insect spray -- the cartoon roaches screaming "RAID?!?" just before the spray annihilates them. They used to run on The Flintstones when I was very little.

My boss may or may not be in today. He's sick, and so are all 3 of my colleagues. I may be piloting the ship all by myself. Until March 2020, we referred to this kind of situation as "cold and flu season." Now people babble about tests and contact tracing. Jeez Louise.

35 I got my WiiM Mini streaming box up and running today and I am like, what?, how is it possible this thing works so well for a sub $100.00 streamer. Everything is 1st class. The box it comes in. It comes with all cables and power supply. The hockey puck itself has all the right ports and it feels solid.

The setup is dead simple: install the app on your phone, connect the optical to the receiver, plug it into the wall and boom the app goes to work. It found my NAS/media server, let me set 96kps/24 bit depth, I then turned off all the streaming services I don't use, set a few presets, and that its. After that I was off to streaming FLAC files off the NAS and the high res files from Amazon, some Spotify, some radio stations. The fidelity was excellent, no drop outs, no weird stuff, it exceeded my expectations by a mile.

I looked hard at the Bluesound streamer that costs $500.00 and the delta between them is minimal. Multiple Minis can be joined so you can have whole house coverage.

Lots of good Youtube reviews of it. The WiiM forum is solid, the company updates the software regularly - it is great front end to an AVR or Receiver.

It is a thing.

38 I purchased a book from the local PA Dutch market. It is called "My Prayer Journal. Mornings with God." and the quote says "When worry overwhelms you in the darkness, trust what God has shown you in the light. Each day his mercies are new!" It makes reference to Psalm 30. The note in my Bible says in reference to verse five: "His favor IS for life. Weeping may endure for the night but joy comes in the morning." David Jeremiah the pastor and Biblical commentator says: The psalmist contrasts the difficulties of this life with God's lasting favor.

One of the best auto-corrects ever. I bet Leon Musk is super cool and jazzy.

Liberals really will try everything to destroy their opponents. Musk isn't building apartments for them in the offices,, with stoves and other items, he's just thrown some beds and cots. Hospitals do the same thing for doctors and nurses, so I hope the city is going to fairly enforce these rules, or else Musk might need to sue their ass.

It's the same like Trump now, where NY won its case against him for basically doing the same thing every company does, give their top exec's perks. But they only went after him, so hopefully he fights this to SCotUS as they've let every other company off the hook.... wonder why.

The Republican governors and AGs with some balls should start following suit if Dems addres allowed to ferry away with this.

43 Xmas shopping? We're going to the outlet store of a chain department store tomorrow-- a bit of a road trip, as it's in an exurb. And it doesn't open until 12 noon (!). We'll hit the Cracker Barrel near it for an early lunch beforehand, I guess. It's to let Miss Linda get more value out of the gift card I gave her for her birthday (and I could use some new shirts too). Still don't know what she wants for Xmas. Prob. chocolates and some wine would be good.

As for me, a tin of some fancier pipe tobacco (I want to try Mac Baren's Mixture Scottish) would be great.

What a nice gesture. There is one person at a pub I go to for meals and a beer and she has been so kind to me over the last few years. I left her a very nice tip the other day, her kids should end up with a few extra Christmas gifts this year. Another person has a scholarship in her daughter's name at the local university (the daughter was killed by a drunk driver). I make a nice donation to that each year in return this person always shares the students thank you letters.

She has started sending me a draft to proofread of the emails she is about to send out beyond our office. She sends them to our other colleagues too. The hell of it is, I've seen worse misspellings and howlers in emails coming from other departments, from people I know no one will censure because they are of, shall we say, protected classes.

Despite her total embrace of the Coof Hysteria, she is intelligent; she earned a Ph.D. in history when that still meant something. For her to have done that with dyslexia is remarkable.

175 I happened to reboot my laptop this morning. By the time it had finished booting, before I opened a single application, 8GB of RAM was already in use.

I remember when having a 2GB Windows computer was only so you could run 64-bit Windows. The 64-bit and 32-bit, when either loaded left the user the same amount of memory. While the 64-bit opened up the second gigabyte (the 32 could only address the lower) the 64-bit version took up so much memory that nothing was left.

With the 4GB, the computer thrashed the disk so much to swap memory it was near useless. Freedom didn't begin until 8GB, and then 8GB was for running web apps. 16GB bare minimum for developent. Now 32GB seems cramped when I have to start spinning up all kinds of Docker containers in order to test a "Hello World" application.

When I was in basic training there was a guy who decided he hated it and declared he was a fag. He was gone a day later.

I don't think he was a fag. He just hated guns, apparently, because this happened when we were introduced to the M-16. So, why did he even enlist in the Army?

179 So,it turns out the Q Club shooter was a known whackjob:

After Aldrich ultimately surrendered and faced arrest, police searched the grandmother’s home “to prevent a planned terrorism attack.” There, they found bomb-making materials in the basement.

A narrative from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office explosives unit said the substances included an estimated 113 pounds of ammonium nitrate in a tub and packets of aluminum powder, which combine to make an explosive.

180 you know, for the record, those 4chan autists did find shia lebouff's flag a couple times with nothing but stars to guide them...

Actually, they tracked aircraft flying overhead. They saw a plan heading in a certain direction and then drew a trace of the aircraft's flight. After enough aircraft flew overhead, they determined that the camera had about a four minute lag, then via the intersections they were able to play Marco Polo with car horns (shia had audio running) until they found the flag.

182 They also used sunrise/sunset times and relative shadow lengths vs time-of-day to get the approximate latitude and longitude, which let them know where to look for those aircraft contrails, and which contrails would be useful. Shia had also planted the thing near a river, which gave further clues, as did a Facebook picture posted with a local… Shia had been in the area fly fishing.

183 Inspector built me a new computer just before Thanksgiving.

It started out with him buying me a copy of New World. New World doesn't run on Win8.1 so he installed Win10. Or not, because my hard drive had a damaged sector that was rapidly increasing (and the motherboard may have been too old anyway). At that point he decided I needed a new case as well since my only functional USB port was going out. Fortunately, my graphics card was still okay.

So now I have a new computer in a case with *6* multicolor lighted fans and, more importantly, didn't lose everything from a catastrophic drive failure.

188 I got a kick out of the observation that 8 GB of RAM is committed before asking the computer to actually do anything. Even though computer performance has grown by the leaps and bounds of Moore's Law, all those gains have been negated by the increasingly bloated requirements tacked on to every action.

20 years ago I only needed some 350 MB to turn my computer on before asking it to do anything; now it takes 8 GB to achieve the same thing.

189 >By the time it had finished booting, before I opened a single application, 8GB of RAM was already in use.

That's because every modern OS will use all the RAM you have to cache common components, rather than leave the RAM unused and hit the glacially-slow-by-comparison disk when you finally decide to do something.
