First-World Problems...

moon monster.png
[Hat Tip: JT]

I have no idea whether that is true, but it illuminates what was and perhaps will be again about American culture. We had the ability to be deadly serious and lighthearted at the same time. But we seem to have lost the ability to laugh, while at the same time being deeply unserious.

Yes, that is a First-World Problem, since I believe the roots of it are the marvelous advances we have made in all fields, the fabulous wealth our industry and energy and genius has created, and the leisure that has afforded us.

Armstrong and Aldrin and Collins were 240,000 miles from earth, with no possibility of rescue if something went wrong. And they got there on the bleeding edge of technology...our cellular technology is more mature than their Saturn V rocket! But they did it with skill and aplomb and bravery and stoicism and humor.

Our culture has far more problems than 1969 America (and that was a troubled time too); perhaps we can take a page from the Apollo 11 crew's playbook and not take trivialities so seriously. We have enough important stuff to agonize over without expanding everything to an existential issue.

Now...about that maple syrup on your French Toast!

[I may or may not be able to hang around, so please behave...no pulling Nurse Ratched's hair or stealing Garrett's Crocs!]

Three electrical substations were deliberately sabotaged last night, blacking out 40,000 people.

The Left is screaming that this is right-wing terrorism - that it was done to stop a drag queen show for children that planned in the area.

Rest assured that if "conservatives" allegedly did this, that there were several FBI informants behind it.

One wonders if this is an excuse for the Biden Administration to crack down on "domestic terrorism" before the Republicans take over the House. And to affect the Georgia Senate race, of course.

98 Things will regress until it reaches the point that the federal government can no longer hold things together, at which point the USA breaks up and the regional powers start to stabilize things. Probably looking at a roughly 1970s technology base with a few outliers here and there.

A notable difference from that of the Roman empire is that the skills and knowledge to keep things going weren't hoarded by the decadent ones; if anything it's the other way around, all the important R&D and manufacturing is done by 'barbarians' with no connection to the decaying collectivist metropole.

138 Humor in dark places: i recall a story from Iwo Jima, as the Marines desperately defending their position from multiple banzai attacks at night. A japanese soldier carrying a satchel bomb fell near a foxhole and when it went off, it blew the soldiers arms and legs and clothes off. The torso was tossed through air into the foxhole, where it landed in the lap of a marine who'd been stunned by the nearby explosion, naked ass up. When he became aware, the marine looked down and screamed "oh my god am I hit that bad???"

Pulled and tugged on the release device, and ping! ping! the springloaded bolts released, and the entire 3 by 4 foot steel frame with bars came free.

Meh. so I got some white caulking on the glass. That's what razor blades are for. Security bars are back in place now. Room should be a lot less drafty now. I am having a Big Rock Traditional Ale to celebrate this milestone.

171 Police brass have ordered cops to attach stickers emblazoned with the letters “NYPD” to their work phones to try to curb personal calls and texting on duty — but some officers are saying where they can stick it.

The directive requiring the stickers was added to the NYPD’s patrol guide last week, according to a “Finest Message” sent to cops a day before Thanksgiving.

“Upon receipt, all members of the service are required to affix an ‘NYPD phone sticker’ to the outside of their department issued cell phone case, so that it’s clearly visible,” the order dated Nov. 23 reads.

Distribution of the decals comes several months after Mayor Eric Adams Adams told the public to snap a photo of any cops talking on their phones in subways.

Santa was having a terrible day at his North Pole shop. Mrs. Claus had been bitching at him all day, the reindeer had all jumped out of their corral and the elves were threatening a strike. Santa hears a knock at the door and when he answers it an Angel is standing there with a beautiful Christmas tree.

"Santa" she said "What should I do with this Christmas tree?"

178 Too darn spoiled & naïve nowadays.

Life WAS tougher years ago for many American families & there weren't the number (& $ value) of social & economic safety nets. Kids "timed out" of public school by about 19 & the males were often directed to enlist. Others dropped out by 16, 17 at the latest, to work & help provide for their families or simply to flee. They were often charged with attending physically or mentally challenged relatives.

Knew many families where dad simply left & returned to Greece, Italy, etc. & left mom to take up sewing, parts work, laundry, babysitting. There was a lot of alcoholism & usage of 'behavior modification' meds (Mother's Little Helper, The Rolling Stones) & street drugs, too, among adults. Seatbelts weren't a thing, grandma was, as was cigarette smoking & some religion. Community conflict & local gangs generally stayed within the community.

But the offbeat humor & multitude & diversity of comedies & comedians that were on TV (serials & variety acts) & also in clubs - fabulous. Everyone had the crazy uncle & family members that weren't to be trusted with the silverware.

215 Frankly, I am doubting now that we actually landed on the moon. I have seen that the COVID-19 pandemic was fake, I now see that the official story about 9/11 is bogus (watch building 7 fall in on its footprint in what looks exactly like a controlled demolition, or try to make sense of the small 60 ft hole in the Pentagon being made, supposedly, by a 757).

I see, now, that the people running things from the top have been phucking with us for decades and I think they faked the moon landing. I suggest watching the one and I think only press conference with the three Apollo 11 astronauts a few weeks after they splashed down. For guys who supposedly achieved one of the most remarkable achievements in human history, they look embarrassed and downbeat, like they knew the whole thing was a scam and wanted to be anywhere but there trying to answer questions about things they hadn't done. Issues include the Van Allen radiation belts, two sources of illumination in the moon photos, 400 degree temperatures swings on the moon surface and all these untested variables yet perfect success on the first try with all the various 1960s technologies crammed into something about the size of a SUV.
