Friday's ONT Wants To Party All The Time

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and it is now Christmas time. With that in mind, I'd like to give everyone Season's Greetings:

Big Unit

We buy a side of beef every year from a local ranch. We visited last time to see the operation and meet our cow before it was butchered. I'm standing there and something taps me on the shoulder. I turned around ad there was this MASSIVE Charolais bull looking at me. He wasn't this tall, but he was about the size of a dining room table - one that seats 8. The rancher says "Oh, that's Charlie. He sires all our cattle. He wants his nose petted." When a 2500 lb bull wants his nose petted, he gets his nose petted. Charlie followed us around like a happy puppy the whole time we were there. Even Charlie isn't this big.

This graphic is in tents.

Truth. I think of this often when I run across “Only the government should have guns” types. Frankly I wonder how they can be so ignorant.

Christmas Season doesn't officially start until Sunday; the first Sunday of Advent.

And, get this, the first two weeks are penitential. What you say? LOL Fasting and penance! The feasting doesn't begin until Gaudete (Joyful) Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent.

So, if after the Thanksgiving festivities, you feel the need to go on a diet, LOL, have at it.

I have to open it in the sink, let it defizz, put the lid back on, then rinse it off with water. This never happens with any other kind of pop. Ideas?

I remember watching a video where they were trying to see how effective English longbows were against French armor.

They went into detail about how they got a bow and arrows that were as close as possible to what the English had and then they reached out to an archery expert.

And the expert came on the show and talked about how he basically spent his life doing archery. And...he was built like a linebacker. The host asked him about it and the archer said that you needed upper body strength to really be able to draw a medieval bow. The average draw weight for an English longbow was around 120lbs.

I think about that interview every time I see a small, slight woman as an archer in fiction.

Skeletons of British archers that have been examined are twisted and misshapen by constant archery practice, and how it changed their musculature.

I have not yet seen an arrows vs archery video that shows how archers targeted weak points (even the eye slots of armor) because they were insanely accurate. And none that show the damage done when that arrow hits the plate it cannot penetrate.

A garden hose, some quick shifting of the bird into my enclosed propane smoker and hosing down of the The Brinkman to kill the fire saved the day just barely.
The other bird in my New Braunfels stick burner had to cook longer because the wind was playing havoc with the temp control but other than that drama...we enjoyed a nice feast.

184 Medieval archers were able to, according to reliable reports from the time, shoot an arrow in a big arc, load, and shoot another so it would be more flat and direct, and hit with both nearly simultaneously on one spot. They could hit a target the size of a hen's egg from great distances. These guys spent their LIVES training to shoot those arrows, and treated each arrow like a competition sniper's bullets. This was their life, this was their job. I don't think there is anyone alive today who does this, training from the first time they can pick up a bow until they are adults then they go to war and learn from people who've been doing this for generations.

193 The longbow sort of filled the same military role as the machine gun. The object being not to kill the enemy directly, but to make a certain area too hot for him to occupy. Area denial.

Research suggests that was the initial use, then when the enemy closed (because they were all hand to hand), they'd start targeting people and being more direct. Of course, they would only have so many arrows, and when they ran out, they'd retreat to the rear because they were not very good fighters up close. And after the battle hope to recover as many arrows as they can, because those bastards are not easy to make by hand.

That is a good article. The worst part is that until you learn to handle logic and how to think for yourself you aren't aware of how ignorant you are. You think you can do so, you think you are independently aware and smart and able to parse the news.

Its a skill you must learn, some learn it early, some must be taught, but if there is nobody in your life to teach you to think things through, then you simply are unaware how little you understand and must be spoon fed information.

The thickest parts yeah, it cannot penetrate even the wrought iron that stuff tended to me made out of. But the archers knew that, too. So they would aim elsewhere if they could, and were good enough to hit that.

But there's another factor: its flat out intimidating to have a shower of arrows bombarding you. 300 showed that pretty well, it is intense knowing that death is raining down on you, and its not so nice to the horses, either.

246 How many archers would be in a Roman legion?

Rome primarily used javelins, slingers, and spears but they would hire mercenary Sagettarii especially if they had to deal with enemy archers. How many depended a lot on who they were fighting and where. If it was a nice big open wide area, they'd want more. If it was a forest fight, without a lot of clear area, not so many.

Its not exactly clear why, but usually Romans didn't learn archery except for hunting, preferring spears etc for war. That's the best info I have been able to dig up or read in historical mystery novels.

10 cohorts to one legion
six centuries to one cohort
10 tents to one cohort
eight soldiers to one tent
120 cavalry - not really a fighting force, but messengers and scouts.
The Legions were later supplemented by the auxiliaries, who were normally non-citizens, and combined cavalry and infantry"

276 I vaguely recall that the body from 6,000 years ago they found in the Alps died from an arrow wound.

But by the time recorded history rolled around archery didn't seem as big of a method of war in the Med region.

It was big in Gaul/Celtic areas. I remember reading one of the "war only came about because of modern societies" trying to explain hill forts with trenches around them full of arrow heads.

Obviously answer? That's where you'd shoot an enemy trying to scale your palisade with an arrow. His answer? Uh...hunting practice?

309 If the Arc of history is lurking around I would welcome any info on the Portland situation. Apparently Antifa has threatened to burn down the Portland Tesla dealership because Elon is enforcing the Twitter rules regarding promoting violence " equitably "

The Antifa account was deleted, after the anti-Tesla flyer was up for six hours. The guy behind the deleted account now claims on Mastodon that the flyer was "a parody".

Yeah, right.

The Portland cops have been quite efficient recently dealing with pre-announced vandalism sprees - basically, they stop suspect cars enroute to the riot, and write them up for safety violations. (The suburban cops do the same thing.)

So, I don't think much will happen.

The only success that the Usual Suspects have had lately is unannounced attacks - a few days ago, they broke a bunch of windows at Adidas North American HQ in protest of the World Cup. (Really.)

Takes real genius to try to organize vandalizing Musk's properties on Twitter.

Speaking of Artemis, it did the close lunar flyby, and has successfully inserted itself in a high NRHO orbit. That stands for near-rectilinear halo orbit, a complex 3D (not in the orbital plane of the earth and moon) orbit.

The planned landing is going to be near the lunar south pole (there's probably some water ice there), and you need a polar orbit to get there.

They've got plans for a "Lunar Gateway", a small space station in such a halo orbit that will serve as a way station for those landings.

I've read heated criticism of that plan from just about all the sources I trust and like. They say it's just stupid, no need for that.

No. It just goes in the halo orbit, then does another close fly by and comes back to earth. Unmanned test flight. The next planned flight, Artemis II, will be crewed, and won't land either. Another Apollo 8.

The landing plan is for Artemis III. But that depends on Elon getting the Starship HLS vehicle up and going, as well as the Lunar Gateway thing.

I have been using that phrase for years. It started when the cousins on my father's side of the family fought the fetus wars of the 1990's. Cousin 1 has a kid..fooom, cousin 2 not to be outdone has a kid..fooom, cousin 1 retaliates with twins, foom foom, cousin 2 says fuck you and foom, cousin 3 gets in on the action..fooom, cousin 1 retaliates again, foom, cousin 4 says eat me... fooom, cousin 5 says I'll destroy you all.. foom, cousin 4 counters...foom, and so on. The thunder of the fetus cannons would scare the fuck out of the ghosts of gettysburg.

Want to plan a get away on 4th of july? noooooo tinsel dick goes and plans cannon ball 1's first birthday party on the 4th of july, when the it was born in JUNE, not to mention he got married in the first place on labor day weekend. Going away for memorial day? nope, sorry, the other shit stain is getting married and picked that weekend. My mother was ready to slaughter them all. For years they fucked up good holiday weekends with weddings, graduation parties, etc. Then they start the fetus wars and fuck up more holidays for years with birthdays, and kindergarten graduation parties, and babies first shit celebration, and on and on. It still goes on, because now the fetus bombs of the fetus wars are getting married and they started the fucking cycle all...over...again. Ask me what I did this past 4th of july?

Dr Simone Gold: 'We stand on his shoulders'
Posted by Frontline News Staff, July 01, 2022,

Dr. Vladimir “Zev” Zelenko, the man who discovered and implemented the treatment for COVID-19 that over the past two years has been responsible for saving millions of lives worldwide, has passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was 48.

Born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1973, Zev’s family immigrated the United States in 1977 and settled in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York.

He attended Hofstra University where he earned with a B.S. in chemistry with high honors. He then went on to the Buffalo School of Medicine where he earned his M.D. in 2000. ...

What should be the obvious answer to clot shot mania would have been something like, "Well we just didn't know it didn't work then and we thought it was the only way to save a large number of lives. We are sorry we did the best we could with the info we had at the time."

I'm not saying this excuses what they did, I'm not saying its even true. But the fact that they are now pretending they didn't do it...and trying as hard as they can to still force people to take the shot...tells you they have another reason - it certainly isn't protecting people from COVID, or uploading belief in the healthcare system, or even making money. Its something way darker.

391 A couple of dishes of food for thought . Let me preface that, in general, I look askance at the prepper chicken littles on the interwebs . Apparently 4 of the RR unions have gotten agreements from the remaining unions that they will honor a strike . Strike planning is currently underway for a Dec 8th strike . If nothing changes, by the end of next week some critical rail traffic, primarily hazardous materials, will be halted for logistical and safety reasons. This includes petroleum .
They are forced to take early action because you can not just off track side those types of freight. The diesel stock ( inventory) is at or around 25 days still . That is a national number. Viewed from a regional standpoint it is much worse in some areas. I don't know what percentage of product is shipped by rail but I do know it is a material (read as oh shit) amount . If a rail strike, nationwide, lasts beyond a couple days it becomes significantly more complicated to flip the switch back on. It seems to me that a lot of little dominoes are being conveniently lined up. My hair isn't on fire yet. I doubt I will light it on fire if it happens but there are many who may. Just a thought
