Christmas Season Kickoff Cafe

103 This is for those who need something to do, and it should be on the Gun Thread, things to look up. The Swiss had the most elegant, well crafted pistol ever in service, the Sig P210 (P49 military designation). Before that, they had a home brew Luger, really strange looking when you look at one by a P08. Red grips to match the pocketknife, and other weird looking stuff.

Major tax filing services, including H&R Block, TaxAct and TaxSlayer, have been covertly sending Facebook sensitive financial information when Americans file their taxes online, according to The Markup.
The data includes names, email addresses, income, filing status, refund amounts and college scholarship information - which is sent to Facebook regardless of whether a person even has a Facebook account - or with other platforms owned by Meta. The company can then be used to fine tune advertising algorithms.

153 An activity titled “what are some best practices to help your GSA be successful?” encourages educators to find a “safe space” for a club by reaching out to a school counselor or band director. To advertise the club, the activity suggests school announcements and putting the information in school newsletters.
“I had the school secretary read it aloud on the announcements to advertise,” the activity read. “Just hearing her say the words ‘Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender’ aloud every morning for a week was a thrill.”
The educators are also encouraged to establish a level of “confidentiality” and how to “protect your students at this level,” the activity showed. Educators are also taught to find out the best way to communicate with their students and to have “concern about who can record” any group messages or communication.

The other huge absurdity is how after decades of insisting there is no inherent difference between men and women, suddenly people can decide whether they are men or women no matter what their physical characteristics are. If men and women are not inherently different, how would they even know which they "feel" like?

Right? From the Scioto Valley Guardian:

ROSS COUNTY, Ohio — A Sheriff in southern Ohio is reporting that a “non-human” creature slaughtered a horse overnight.

It happened at a farm on Airport Road in Ross County.

“[The farmer] stated today he found his barn torn apart and was missing a horse, he stated there was blood in the barn and the back door was busted open. He found the horse in the creek in the back of the property dead,” a deputy wrote in a report. “He has cameras and stated he checked it already and [no one] had been there since he was yesterday. Upon further inspection, we were able to determine that a human did not do this to the horse….”

Maybe they aren't the only ones who misread the room. If they are filing a suit like this it's because they are getting killed in the court of public opinion.

283 The client is under no obligation to pay the creative agency if the agency submits an unapproved ad for publication. That's why the client has to sign off on whatever creative is cooking up. Usually the client even suggests changes or tweaks to whatever the creatives are submitting. I haven't read the lawsuit, don't know what type of damages Balenciaga is seeking or on what basis.

294 So, an updated rumor on that new, failed Disney animated film Strange World.

Apparently, Disney was so afraid of pissing off its woke workforce after the PR disaster that was the run up to Lightyear as well as the straight to streaming reaction from the staff for Turning Red that they just decided to eat the cost of the theatrical run no matter what.

Putting it on streaming could have hidden the financial embarrassment of the film to the world, but it would have pissed off the woke workforce. Putting it in theaters exposes the financial embarrassment to the world, but appeases the woke workforce.

It is to laugh. They're going to lost hundreds of millions, and the world gets to watch.

Balenciaga is an iconic designer, started in the late 1930s in Spain, moved to Paris and was known for innovative and ground-breaking design in the 1960s. Spawned other leading lights in fashion design such as Hubert deGivenchy. Barely advertised on purpose, it seems. They didn't push it because they knew it was junk. It was also pretty woke (like, full-on with the heroes deciding to go back to the stone age because their new planet is literally alive, just like Avatar, yes).

The lack of marketing budget was decided under Chapek, too.

==========

If it costs $400 million (which I think is just about the right number), then $800 will be the rough-estimate of a total for production+marketing. The theatrical take tends to average about 60%, but this is big, so assume a more even split at 50-50 (each movie is negotiated individually, and the studio gets the most in the early weeks, especially the first).

I'd guesstimate $1.6 billion before a penny of profit.

Plus, Avatar 3 is already shot. If Avatar 2 doesn't make nearly the kind of money it needs, Avatar 3 is still getting made...with a huge price tag.

They've been doing it here and there. Turning Red was the movie about the half-Chinese girl who discovers that she turns into a giant red panda once a month after a certain age (yeah...). It went straight to streaming (pissing off the creatives). Lightyear ended up getting all the press about being filled with gayness (it was just the typical Disney amount which is easily cut for foreign markets), and it bombed because it became a cultural touchpoint.

They've put some other big money films straight to streaming recently too, like Pinocchio (which has to have cost at least $150 million, if not more). At this point, I consider a straight to Disney+ strategy an admission of complete loss.

Bob Gale (co-writer) has been very open about the fact that the teaser at the end of the first one was purely a joke. When it became a huge hit and Universal became desperate for a sequel, Gale and Zemeckis sat down to start writing and realized that they had to get rid of the girlfriend as soon as possible. That's why she gets knocked out so quickly.

Avatar 2 failing would be far more damaging than one expensive movie failing. It's be at least 2 expensive movies failing at once.

Avatar 3 is already filmed and in post-production, and I think some of 4 has been filmed. Hundreds of millions have already been spent on 3 and 4.

If 2 can't justify its own costs, does it sink 3 and 4? Or does Disney just keep going forward with them?
