28 One of my favorite stories got willowed:

I marched in the Detroit Thanksgiving Day parade in a Military Band. I was in the front row (trombone of course) and we were marching to a drum cadence. A pile of horseshit was in my line of march. Discipline was extremely tight (we were national champions 20 times) and I ended up stepping in it.

One kid in the crowd yelled "Lookit at that white boy, steppin in that SHIT!!!" He yelled it so loud that I'm sure everyone heard it. Our ranks were so precision that everyone behind me probably stepped in it too.

I hated being behind horses in parades.

50 In Britain they're big on these toast holder thingies. Only dirty common peasant savages would lie their peices of toast horizontal on top of each other. So they devised these metal things that you cram your toast into vertically. They look like small file folder stands sort of but have extra slots for 4-6 pieces of toast. My wife had to buy one when she saw them because they are apparently "cute". I told her we will probably never use it. We have never used it.

68 We were guests many years ago with a Jewish extended family who had a tradition that between main course and desserts, the men and children and guests would take a walk around the block. That worked off a little bit of food fullness to make room for desserts and enabled the women doing the serving to clean up and restock the table for the dessert course. We never adopted that tradition, but it was a pretty good idea.

And on the plus side, just moments ago, I was able to actually accurately count the fingers that Mrs VIA was showing me by looking over the temporary air bubble that the surgeon placed in the eye, to help with stabilizing the retina.

And thanks to, and for Ace, and you bunch of Morons who help each other to get through the struggles and challenges of life.

100 Greetings from Cave Creek, AZ. Spending Thanksgiving at the home of friends.
Young Gen Zers are in the spa talking about how brave and awesome Zelensky is.
Decided to come inside and have a drink.

Happy Thanksgiving, Jane and all you Morons. We were just at Cave Creek last month Jane. We were out to AZ to intern the remains of Jules' folks in the big vet cemetery just south of there. Nice place but I fear it is soon to be engulfed by the Phoenix urban sprawl.

Dinner here is ca 5:30-6. Went to Hy-Vee and got an almost free Honeysuckle White turkey. You had to buy a Cure81 ham and got a free 10-14 lb turkey. We ended up w/ 15+ lb turkey and 5+ lb ham for ca $43. I should keep track of how many meals we get out of that.

There are enough people in our immediate family (my parents, siblings, and nieces/nephews and their kids) that we rent the (very small) local church hall. Which in turn allows us (them, since I don’t live here anymore) to invite neighbors and friends who would otherwise be on their own.

Also gives us access to the church hall kitchen. Works out very well. And I am stuffed.

My Nurse Practitioner/Primary Care Provider made a house call to my residence. Black bag and all like when I was a youth less than 29 years of age - a few years ago. I mentioned how my wife had incurred Covid like issues in late 2019 a few months before the SHTF. How I had dropped her suddenly super high blood pressure with the Bob Dole 'blue pill' in low dose.

She didn't smack me upside the head but instead rattled off some line about, 'by the way pulmonary .... dah, dah, dah, the dah..'

So there might be something there but they're not allowed to say. Ain't freedom of speech great? Maybe someday we can bring it back.

264 Popcorn and buttered toast? Sounds good to me!

We're back from downtown and the buffet dinner on Bourbon St. (No, this was not at a strip club.) Oysters, Gulf shrimp, little crab cake appetizers; prime rib, turkey, crispy catfish, grilled shrimp; mac & cheese, corn bread stuffing, and probably more things I missed. Plus some desserts, cookies and little servings of ice box pie. All well done up, and our server was cool. (I gave him a nice tip in cash, and he grinned at me.) There were a lot of overweight people, and Miss Linda and I seemed to be the only ones dressed up. (A hoodie and jeans to go out to T-giving dinner? Puh-lease.)

The weather was cool-ish and threatening rain. I have comments to make about what the old shopping district looked like -- but I don't want to ruin the Thanksgiving mood for any of you. Tomorrow, perhaps. In the meantime, happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Blue-haired xiece, Fragrant Lambkin Amphibian, threw a fit insisting we pray to Xother Gaia and xer avatar, Hillary!. Crazy Uncle Frank roared back that we should only pray to the One True Lord, Thor, the god of thunder and lightning then threw his mighty 10 lb. sledgehammer at Fragrant Lambkin Amphibian.
Then FLA pulled out xer bear spray and started spraying everything. So, I had to put them both in time-out in a pen with Bitey, my pit bull as guardian.
The rest of us settled down to a good meal. But, everything tasted like bear spray. Even the sweet potatoes.
But I kinda liked that. Maybe I'll make bear spray sweet potatoes next Thanksgiving.

Linda's late black cat Marie-Antoinette was labeled female, but was discovered to be male when she was about 6. Yeah, I know, but she was black and long-haired, so it's hard to see anything in such terrain. Plus her batteries, we were told, never descended -- so she might as well have been a girl cat. And what got me was the vets Linda took her to earlier either never checked, or never told her what the deal was.

Tomorrow my plans are primarily to avoid Walmart, Target, and any malls; gas up the car; maybe do a small grocery run; and settle down with the first in the Sackett novel series by Louis L'Amour. If it were cold and not raining, a drive out of town wouldn't be a bad idea. Maybe a vintage movie on YooToob?

True. But Marie was black, as I said, and long-haired. It's as though fuzzy black curtains were in the way. She was given the female name by the woman who rescued her, one of Linda's classmates at the time. It suited her, as she considered herself cat royalty. Once we found out her real sex, what were we going to do, call her "Murray Antoinette"? To this day, as you see, she is still "she/her."

310 In law school, our "dead week" before finals was always right after Thanksgiving. I'd come home with about 4 or 5 days' worth of food. I'd eat an early dinner and usually nothing else, except for coffee, for that week while gearing up for exams. It was one of the few highlights of an otherwise 10-12 days of misery.

A full day of cooking and family is pretty much over. Just the ice cream pie to pull out of the freezer and some tea to make.

My kids (the boys) had fourths (that's not a misprint) on my turkey and declared it to the best ever...and that everything was great all day.

In bummer news, my friend's kid got sick, so no 2nd Thanksgiving and visit tomorrow - which might be for the best b/c I'm exhausted. Happy, but exhausted. A quiet day putting up the tree and eating leftovers might be ncie tomorrow.

My only disappointment with Hondo the movie is that the death of Sam the dog is never acknowledged. I would have loved one tiny moment when Wayne's Hondo looks regretful and says quietly, "I miss that damn dog." Just that, nothing more. But it should have been in there.

Had some Caprese salad with the very last garden tomatoes, braised beef arm roast, homemade bread, zucchini lasagna (no pasta), homegrown sweet potatoes baked in the firebox of the masonry heater, mashed Irish potatoes, and two kinds of pie with vanilla ice cream. Took me 6 hours to cook, we got up from the table at 4:15.

Very quiet, just the two of us. And NO politics at the table. Had Vaugn Williams playing in the background, the crackle of the fire...and now a cup of coffee.

Very nice. Very thankful to God for all His blessings and mercy.
