61 Now this is a fun painting. The bright, sometimes odd, colors (blue vine?) are lively. The expression on the baker is proud and playful as he blows the horn (hey! look at these goodies). The way the artist captures the clothing and crisp cloth, the realism of the wares and pretzel holder (pass the salt), it all speaks to the viewer as a pleasant scene. It's not meant to be breathtaking, just enjoyable. I can imagine it, and other scenes like it, would be popular with the rising middle class merchants.
And there is a sense of humor contrasting the figure of the baker with the less than enthusiastic expression on the girl in the shadows. Maybe she is doing the actual work?

Hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving.

139 So, Thanksgiving was a bit off this year. We had family over and did the standard rush, but my brother was in the hospital. He'd been complaining about pain in his arm which was diagnosed as bursitis. They gave him an antibiotic and a steroid, which didn't work. He developed an infection that turned hostile. His arm swelled up incredibly which led to the ER visit Wednesday. The tests revealed that he's now likely diabetic which, along with the steroids, elevated the infection.

They cut him open from shoulder to elbow and infection spewed everywhere. They also had to remove a triceps muscle due to the infection killing it. They cleaned him out and said there's no nerve damage and sewed him back up. He's likely now full on diabetic, so he didn't seem to heed the warnings he got earlier in the year about it.

Things just keep getting better......

They suspected a clot and thought they saw one in a scan, but then discovered the infection. Bad thing is, his wife works in a Dr.'s office. We're wondering if she just told him what was going on and he blindly prescribed meds or he actually SAW my brother and made a determination. It doesn't look good in a way for the Dr. at this point if he actually diagnosed and treated. Cuz he was WRONG.

It is quite funny when you get the younger generations and expose them to vinyl. You hear analog. Albums are analog. When played on quality equipment, they sound better than Digital, which needs to be converted to analog first. Binary just can't reproduce it perfectly.

210 blow one's own horn
To brag about one’s own accomplishments or ability, to promote oneself. The term originated in Roman times, and was translated into English early on. “I will sound the trumpet of mine own merits,” wrote Abraham Fleming in 1576. It was a cliché by the mid-nineteenth century, according to Eric Partridge, and gave rise to one of W. S. Gilbert’s numerous puns (“The fellow is blowing his own strumpet,” he said of a manager who was bragging about his actress-mistress).

Indeed (thanks, I'd forgotten the name of the Cypress). It was eerie having the Bay Bridge closed and dark for months. We took a chilly boat ride from Oakland over to The City to eat one night, and barely caught (had to run) to catch the last boat back out.

I remember people complaining that the San Francisco media made it look like they had the worst of it (all about them) and relegating the East Bay damage to secondary status.

292 So yeah Phil Hartman died of "Partner Assisted Suicide" which philistines refer to as "murder", his wife KNEW he wanted to end it all.

Can't tell if that's sarcasm or serious, but had never heard that -- although I know that it does occur. Might have to investigate ... just out of curiosity.

[Hit's close to home as I discovered doing genealogy research that a great-grandfather murdered his wife while she slept (definitely not "Partner-Assisted Suicide") and then killed himself as he had gone insane from the pain of a hernia -- something they couldn't repair back then -- and chronic insomnia.]

298 >>Very nice.

Well it was a nice idea but in practice there were more than a couple oopses.

We always put the tree up on Christmas Eve and one year it got away from us. So after dark on Christmas Eve I set off into the woods to find a tree. I found a really perfect one, cut it down and dragged it about a half mile through the snow.

Got home and showed it to my father and he asked if I had been drinking. It was a great tree but it was also about 15 feet tall. Cut it in half and it was still too tall to put the angel on top.

It was the thought that mattered.

306 I like this very much. Baking is hard work and they both look blown out by all they've had to do since 3am. He has the musculature and the forearms and hands of a baker. His right hand is really well done. Dude has the detached stare of someone who has busted ass all day and is not impressed.

The horn is place way over on the left side of his mouth.

His pregnant wife/assistant/daughter is grinding through to the end of the day.

First thought was he'd almost sold out and was sounding a last call but the visible bread may just be a display of wares.

Competent people who'd worked hard all day.

The legislation said, “Whosoever shall brew ale in the town with intention of selling it must hang out a sign, otherwise he shall forfeit his ale."
