Daily Tech News 20 November 2022

Top Story

  • After a poll that garnered fifteen million votes, Donald Trump's Twitter account has been reinstated.

The usual suspects are, well, usual suspecting:

Given that both Apple and Google carry Trump's own Truth Social app in their stores, I think the answer there might not be what Karen was looking for.

Tech News

  • Oh no, there's another one.

Guess I gotta buy it. It's a great case, but not cheap, and these special editions run 50% over the price of the regular version.

I'd be in trouble if they announced they were doing all of Hololive.

  • Meanwhile, I've found a fridge that is 5% smaller, 5% cheaper, and most importantly, 10mm shorter than the one I was looking at before. The one I had in mind was exactly the height of the space below the cupboards. Maybe it would fit just fine, but I don't need the trouble if it didn't.

  • Artifacts of range restriction: When predictive factors aren't. (Towards Data Science)

One example is particularly clear: Among employees of tech companies, technical skill is one of the weakest predictors of success. That's because tech companies are trying to hire the top 5% by technical skill, and with that range restricted other factors are amplified.

  • Nvidia is expected to launch its mobile 4000 series GPUs on January 3. (WCCFTech)

Leaked numbers indicate the mobile 4060 will be faster than the mobile 3070, and the mobile 4070 will be faster than the current top of the line mobile 3080 Ti.

I wish they'd give them different names to the desktop cards, though.

  • Looking for an 8 core NUC that can double as a four port 2.5Gb firewall/router? This is one. (Serve the Home)

If you don't mind ordering from a random company on AliExpress and getting who knows what BIOS, it does seem to work.

  • Funny how this suddenly became possible after the entire Twitter management team and three quarters of the staff were terminated and locked out of the network.

Disclaimer: Almost as if the management and staff were the problem all along.

Exactly!

Energy Information Administration projects heating a home with natural gas will cost an extra 25% this winter, and heating with electric will run 11% higher. The steepest hike will be on heating oil, which is expected to be 45% more expensive than last winter, squeezing roughly 5 million households, mostly in the Northeast.

Yet, the Northeast votes blue, like the color of their lips this winter.

Heating oil +45% and natural gas +25% but electricity is just +11%?? I guess the free unicorn farts used by power generators really do offset carbon fuels.

*mind blown*

13 I have not voted blue for about 15 years, nor have millions of others in the NE including the fellow who runs this site, but I appreciate people celebrating our possible coldness and death. The depth of feeling gives a warm feeling to this site.

Well, if electricity is generated from hydro, or nukes, or coal there's no reason for a huge jump in cost. I understand the heating oil increase, and natural gas seems about right without fracking adding additional supply.

Today I'll be installing a second in-line electric water heater. My plan is to go ZERO heating oil this winter. I can afford it, I just don't want to - if that makes any sense.

The voters (or more accurately the vote counters) in this country have made it clear that they have no objection to higher energy costs. They have virtue signaled that the planet must be 'saved'.

If they're willing to tolerate the discomfort, I'm not shedding any tears on their behalf. The article I got that data from quoted a number of people from Philadelphia - a city that votes 80% on average for (D)'s - a number which negates the vote of the rest of the state.

The state of Florida has no issue with heating costs and had a virtual glowing Red sweep in their elections. While the states in the Northeast remained as Blue as ever. Those same states that prohibit pipelines and fracking and anything to reduce energy costs. So they were importing oil from Russia, which they think colluded with Donald Trump to steal the election from Hillary Clinton. But now, due to an embargo from Joe Biden they can't get that heating oil from Russia and heating oil rose in price by 45%.

I'd create a Venn diagram to explain it but it would make my head hurt.

42 The energy cost surge highlights the election conundrum for most blue states - you either believe that blue states remain so because a large number of people are wards of the state and their votes are augmented to the majority by societal contributors who vote against their economic and other self-interests, or the process is tainted. There is an option for "and" of course, but in either case the idea of throwing off the blue yoke seems, unlikely.

51 The point of my post earlier is that we should all pray for the remnant, like Fen, in this places that more closely resemble the Babylonian captivity than the US these days. You can of course pray for all those people, but I have elected the "shake the dust from my sandals approach". Fen would disapprove, as might my Lord, but I'm a work in progress.

In the meantime I have to dose the brown torbie kitten, then feed her and her big black brother. Grocery stuff is done except for a few Dollar Tree items, so I'm not in a real rush today. Nice.

63 Glad you found a better fitting fridge. When we renovated our kitchen, we had a very different dimension problem. The fridge fit just fine in the cabinet. In fact, it was purpose-built for the fridge. Our problem is that we have a colonial reproduction house with lower than usual ceilings. The refrigerator was delivered horizontally ( to get through the door). It then had to be tilted upright. That meant that at one point, the diagonal from the lower front edge to the upper rear edge would be vertical. The length of that diagonal was greater than the ceiling height. The contractor wanted us to get a different fridge. But I came up with a solution he didn’t like, but did. We removed a section of drywall in the ceiling between two joints, then positioned the fridge so the top edge would come up in that hole when it was raised from horizontal to vertical. Once upright, it was lower than the ceiling and was rolled right into the cabinet.

64 Meanwhile some establishment hack writer named Teri Christoph, over at RedState.com (no surprise), seems to grudgingly admit that the Twitter ban lift revealed President Trump's January 6 tweets that prove he didn't use the message platform to encourage violence. She even posts the relevant tweet where he states "peaceful protest, no violence!"
And yet she still takes the occasion for a juvenile shot a President Trump, stating he still should have and could have done more to prevent what happened on January 6, without giving a single hint as to what extra moves President Trump was supposed to take.
I guess Teri Cristoph just chose to ignore the president's request to then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for additional police and offer of troops for extra security, prior to January 6.
Just for the record (since Christoph failed, deliberately perhaps to note this part), Nancy Pelosi TURNED DOWN President Trump's offer. Those are all the facts.

RedState.com is a despicable site!
