2 Good morning Skip

Hello fellow dead people.

Skip is making interesting promises in the previous comment thread but I don't see any evidence here.

Notice the pluralization in 'books'. I wrote accounting software for a couple of decades and there's *always* two sets of books.

There are two completely inconsistent views of the world being promulgated. Alcohol is not required. Most sane people I know don't want to discuss it.

Posted by: You Really Don't Want to Know at November 19, 2022 04:23 AM (piNn3)

The crux of the matter is they "believe" they are truthful. If they did due diligence, and exhaustively investigated x before making a declaration and taking action, there's a chance they could "know" whether they're being truthful or not.

24 From the Tech Crunch article...

Clowes wrote, for example, that he left because he "no longer knew what I was staying for. Previously I was staying for the people, the vision, and of course the money (lets all be honest). All of those were radically changed or uncertain."

Yep, 20 bucks, same as in town, and Clowes can be yours.

What Elon is doing is a revolt by entrepreneurial capital against the professional-managerial class regime that otherwise everywhere dominates (including and especially large tech companies), and that same PMC (which includes the media) is treating it as an act of lèse-majesté.

30 I don't understand this at all, but it's related to Australian things:

https://tinyurl.com/5cb9m4bh

Klobuchar is the lead sponsor of the Journalism and Competition Preservation Act, an antitrust bill that would allow news outlets to negotiate as a group against big tech companies like Google and Facebook.

Klobuchar said that these companies rely on news agencies’ articles to drive traffic on their platforms, but they do not pay the outlets for their reporting. She said she modeled the bill around similar legislation passed in Australia, where the government has effectively forced tech companies to pay news publishers.

41 Klobuchar's bill has an obvious unintended consequence problem. It's an open attempt at creating royalties around use like an unholy CNN/Spotify marriage. The desire is to foster and sustain real reporting, what you get is titillation for clicks.

43 Saturday!!!! Evening and morning as applicable to all.

Ever wake up with a scratch on the back of your hand, and you don't notice it until you're sitting at the computer with your coffee, and the back of your hand is itching, and you scratch at it and feel the skin splitting, and you look and there's blood seeping out? Don't you hate when that happens?

Seriously, I suppose Stirling might have done it by accident when he was greeting me this morning. I don't recall it happening, though. Weird.

Anyway, I have some leisurely chores to handle today, but there's no rush right now. Whassup?

46 The Left has pushed the need to keep the "news" business going. The need for the government to give them money to keep operating comes up often. And you know they mean the "news" companies whose business model can't support itself, the ones they like and work with and for them, not those icky right wing ones. Canada has already done this, the rest of the West will do it too.

Yeah. My hand was okay last night for sure, and if it had been bleeding overnight there would be dried blood. This just happened. It's shallow, and the bleeding has stopped. I've put some liquid antiseptic/bandage on it.

>Funny stuff. When I was younger, we would go 4-wheeling while hunting in the classic, original ford bronco. Once we punctured the radiator, 20 miles from nowhere, and we had snow, a thermos of coffee, and urine. We plugged the radiator with snow, and melted it as best we could and drove 90 mph back to town, about 20 miles.

64 With regard to the exodus from Twitter, it appears that the 80/20 rule applies to personnel as well: 20% of the personnel do 80% of the work, while the other 80% of the personnel do what's left (if that).

Speaking of personnel and Fred Brooks, who passed away the other day, one of Brooks' observations is that increasing the number of people does not necessarily increase productivity, and often will impede it. Each employee generates some friction within the organization; and in some (many? most?) cases what the employee produces does not pay for the friction s/he generates. We've all seen addition by subtraction - how work improved by getting rid of the useless bodies - and it looks like Elon is doing this on a grand scale. How will it all turn out? Time will tell.

BTW, I'm certain that left-aligned hackers will do their very best to bring Twitter down. Should be interesting.
