They understand PRIMALLY this is a dangerous story for them, so I want you to imagine a jenga set but the game is played in reverse.

95 Snow plows

A few years back and after a nasty winter, the city of Bellevue WA (across the lake from Seattle and run be republicans) decided to invest in a few new snow plows. Rather then buy new, they were able to acquire some good (and more) used plows. Great move.
Across the lake Seattle did the same but only new plows for them. Can't have used shit. So they got a couple new plows.
Come the next bad winter, Bellevue was happily going along clearing roads, while Seattle was mired down. So Seattle, being typical libs, demanded that Bellevue give them their trucks because they were Seattle!
And if memory serves, Bellevue leased them some.

The response on twitter here, and on one youtube channel I guess was "enough."

Don't look at their network map, do not look at their donations the combination of "woke as key" and "Yeah I would f*ck her, but only if she had a hood on" was enough.

Saw lots of old regulars who slapped me on the back, "good to see you", etc.

Wasn't feeling particularly social, so I mostly smiled and listened to conversations.

Old regular asks "You feeling alright? You don't have much to say tonight."

I said "I mostly lurk here now." Got a confused look.

If you use frozen vodka instead of water, you can add more liquid and they're less likely to split. Of course, rolling technique is important, too.

I saw, years ago on a sick, gory shock site called Something Awful, way before the newscaster open mic (that most people assume *is* the origin) -- before the internet even had video and barely had audio beyond beeping music on Geocities embeds...

On this site, a scan of a black and white newspaper clipping, photo of a man crushed under a rock overhang, with the article below explaining that he had been fucking a chicken when the boulder cracked and crushed them both.

The open mic newscaster was more than likely aware of this story.

"And now you know... ...the rest of the story!"

196 I got up early this morning, weather was nice so decided to power wash the pool deck. Had bought a power washer a few months ago on sale, was still in the box.

Opened it up, couldn't get the hose to thread onto it. Decide the hose was crap, drove to Home Depot to get a new one. Bought a commercial hose, got home, still wouldn't thread.

Back to Home Depot to return it and get a garden hose. Looked at the hose and realized I should be attaching a male end, not a female.

Called my wife, asked her to look at the power washer. I've been trying all morning to attach to the wrong side.

So that was 3 hours of time I could have been cleaning wasted. Because I am an idiot.

The Pillsbury pre-made pie crusts aren't that bad. No rolling, throw it in the pie pan, drop in filling. They usually come two to a box so you can have a top crust if you want one. And only enough preservatives to keep your body from decaying for a couple of months.

I don't think "barndominiums" lose (or gain) resale value vs more conventional homes; it still depends on the market, the floor plan, bed / bath counts etc. If anything I'd be more concerned about having the living area entirely on an upper level if you really decide to put it above the garage.

I don't think "barndominiums" lose (or gain) resale value vs more conventional homes; it still depends on the market, the floor plan, bed / bath counts etc. If anything I'd be more concerned about having the living area entirely on an upper level if you really decide to put it above the garage.

I read that as '.... on the market, the flood plain, bed/bath .....' and in that case having everything above the garage may make sense.

I think not, in that God created time (specifically a sense of time for man), and is thus outside it, and being omniscient and omnipotent would likely put a stop to any actions that would cause the paradoxes we worry about.

The interesting question, I think also turns out not to be, ie. can you then go to both heaven and hell? But the elect are chosen by God, who, again, being omniscient and omnipotent, isn't going to be altered by whatever a time traveller does.

Also, I think you run into issues with "...it is appointed to man once to die and then the judgment." So you can't die in different timelines.

1. Just outside Marion, NC, is another motorcycle highway, “The Devil’s Whip”. From where you get on highway 80 in Marion it is IIRC 2000ft up to the Continental Divide, in about a 20 minute drive. One of the worlds premier fun roads. The only catch is that after you crest and go down past Mt. Mitchell Golf Course, there is a turn with a 25mph sign, which the motorcyclists ignore. It is the only turn on any road that I take at less than the posted speed because it is a complete horseshoe which almost meets itself coming back around. Plus it has an open cave with water in it. The riders meet it too fast, lay over to try and make it which puts their heads in the oncoming lane. I almost hit one last summer.

That's assuming Calvinistic predestination, which I have serious doubts about. The question of what happens to your soul in different timelines is part of what I was thinking of, though; if we have free will to accept or reject Christ's offer of salvation, can I accept it in one timeline and reject it in another? And what happens on Judgment Day, in that case? I have no idea.

Assuming a multiverse exists, of course, and I don't really think it does.

Well, I've unfortunately hit that point, too, where a visit to an old bar I worked at is filled with "so and so had a stroke" and "so and so passed away".

It can be real heavy, at times.

In some ways, for a lot of people the local bar is their version of what church should be. A tight-knit community of people sharing burdens.

I miss a lot of them and I pray that they didn't die alone or have family looking after them. For some people it is their only community of people that will remember them when they are gone.

It's a lonely world to have so many people in it.

I mentioned an alternate history without WWI in a previous Book Thread; the author pointed out that what makes the assassination so noteworthy is that it was a 1-in-100 or lower chance of happening the way it did. You would hardly dare write it that way in a novel.

Then I'd spin off to invest in major textbook publishers, seeing to it that such as Zinn and his ilk, never EVER see their works in published ink. And Rush Limbaugh would've been Cronkite's immediate successor, with full editorial control. (I can spin these ideas for hours, they're fun!)

This now establishes precedent to do the same in other counties now that Cochise County is validating their results. Arizona cannot certify any election results until all counties have rendered certified results.

363 BTW, that link I posted for SMH, it's a 52-page, 1954 Dept. of the Army (U.S.) historical study on German tank maintenance procedures in Russia in WW2. It's a great read if you're into WW2. It's not technical but organizational and you really realize just how critical SMH's stuff was to armored warfare back then. If Albert Speer had gotten going 3 years earlier, things would've been different.

364 I'd go back to 1945, and invest with continual roll-overs, into IBM, Polaroid, Xerox, Burroughs, Boeing, and similar.

Karl Denninger wrote about this sort of thing a year or two ago, and pointed out that anyone who's curious about this sort of thing could just sort the trading records to observe the effect of a time traveller trading on his historical knowledge (which apparently he spent a little bit of time on just for amusement's sake).

He concluded that the absence of such evidence either means that time travel isn't possible, or is relatively expensive compared to what we give value to today to the point that it's not worth the effort.

Which could also reflect on the value of today's things rather than the difficulty of time travel itself.

365 Princip In Europe, certainly, and Wilson in the US, but Wilson was really the fault of Teddy Roosevelt. TR got mad at being screwed by the Republican establishment (with reason) and ran third party, splitting the vote. W/O the Bull Moose Taft wins easily. So if you want to eliminate Wilson, and don't want to kill anyone, maybe convince TR to go big game hunting for 6 months or maybe put together an expedition to Antarctica or something similar that would get his juices flowing. That eliminates Wilson without firing a shot.

And yes, I'm aware of the (potential) parallels to 2024.

One of the difficulties in these discussions is that people freely use the word "dimension" to mean both a separate plane of existence (parallel dimension) and another orthogonal axis (so time can be thought of as a fourth dimension, if all you care about is assigning coordinates to things, but it tends to get very confusing if you want to verbally describe movement), and a lot of people, and therefore discussions, don't recognize that.

382 It had been my belief after thinking about it a great deal that time as we perceive it is a manifestation of the will of God. His will has always been leading us to him from the moment he set us in motion to our final time. We are bound to it yet his will is the engine of our free will with which we rise and falter and creation expands in great unfathomable complexity. The will of God is not limited to this but our finite mortal nature notices this small aspect and we call it time.

397 368 A good film on alcoholism is Sideways. Read the Ebert review on that one. I know he was a degenerate Leftist, but Ebert could go to a new level when writing about movies. Other than Sudeways, his reviews of The Good, The Bad, And the Ugly, as well as Pulp Fiction set the standard for that art.

400 397 it leaves us to make our own interpretation. Sure there was more going on than that. I defer to Ebert’s review as not the final decision on the work, but a good discussion on alcoholism.

Farm out HR and payroll stuff to any of the many companies that provide those services, and you could run the place with 150 or so people, total. I'm probably forgetting something, so maybe you need 200 or 250 people, but certainly not 7500.

414 Inflation is often driven by very low interest rates as it brings forward in time spending out of proportion to the present time amount of capital available to purchase.

Just think what time travel backwards would do. There would be massive feedback loops in everything capital, energy, biological evolution, every aspect of existence. A system that allows travel backwards in existence would be inherently unstable and therefore very improbable.

It was really the aftermath of WWI that led to the horror of WWII. The victors imposed an untenable circumstance, and, before even that, the German emperor unleashed communism on the world. There is nothing yet close to WWI that is responsible for what happened afterwards. Maybe Hitler unleashing the Frankfurt School on the United States runs close, but it hasn't reached quite the same damage. Yet.

I was a USAF cop during the Carter Years. Nearly 100% of my enlistment was on Lackland AFB, TX. 2nd largest Defense Language Institute plant, other than Monterey, CA.

Short version. Worst were Iranian & Kuwaiti students. Like a.moron said, entitled and arrogant beyond measure. Mostly, Iraqis were cool, as some were assigned by tribe, but most by Baathist loyalties. Less entitlement, more motivated.

Turks were damn near problem free. They loved food, drink and women. But if they got out of line, their NCOs would beat them to a bloody pulp. They got back in line and stayed in line. Insight. North Koreans were scared SHITLESS of Turkish troops in that conflict. North Vietnamese were scared shitless of Turks AND South Korean troops, in the Vietnam war times. Pro-tip. Have Turk troops as your friends, but never BE a Turk troop, yourself.

That makes sense, now. We'd busted and turned over to Iraqi staff, a proven rapist, who they sent back to Iraq.

USAFOSI briefed us back about four months later. That 2nd Lt. had been beheaded in the town square in Tikrit. Common agreement, is that they hadn't whacked him for the rape, but for the shame brought to the State. And IIRC, that's even well before Saddam had attained the Head of State, but he was a bigwig then, all the same.

471 There was an old joke/fact that went around on Army bases. It was that AF cadets had one day to learn about the M16, and one day to shoot it. We always said that, and I think it was true.

It is well known that all Marines are rifleman first. Sure the Marine Band is an exception. But for the most part, all Marines learn. To shoot for real.

I was in the Army National Guard, 11 B, Infantry. We spent time with our weapons all the time. We spent so much time with them they were part of us.

I realize the Marines and the Army Infantry are not the majority of the service. But I am sure more trigger time for the Navy, Air Force, and most of the Army would not be time wasted.

FULLY AGREED. Further, this former USAF puke would have a frame and Bayonet Dummies erected in front of EVERY USAF squadron offices, and Monday Morning would feature full formations, in fatigues, doing the Spirit of the Bayonet Drills, before the First Keyboard is deployed.

Martial Spirit needs be inculcated into EVERY branch of Service, on a continual basis. .Mil ain't IBM middle management. They're WARRIORS, first, and this must be drilled into their very DNA. Just ask the USAF Clerk Typists who manned the M-16s behind the sandbags at DaNang, and the countless USAF logistics drivers who earned MORE medals for valor in GWII than you might imagine.

Best answer.

A wise parent knows what the child may choose, but knowing that does not impinge on the child's liberty to choose. And that's just plain ol' human parents. How much more would the Omniscient Creator anticipate the choices relatively free-will children would make.

Choices lead us one way or another. The better choices lead to increased blessings of freedom of will. The worse choices restrict us.

Enlightenment and Wisdom, well those tend to filter up as they rise through the ranks and become NCOs, Warrants or even Officers.

But you don't ask an E-1 or E-2 Private to suss out the wisdom of his enemy. You charge him with the duty to subdue his enemy, be it surrender or death. You don't like this?

Ask Sherman his thoughts on the nature of war. He nailed it in one, and his thoughts yet offend the masses.

I served with and knew plenty of your ilk, (+crypto) what with enlistment testing scores maxing out the grid (as did mine) being begged into or opting of your own volition out to Monterey or such in your classified pursuits. You really expect hundreds of thousands of Privates or Airmen or Sailors to know the language of their enemies? You're fucking delusional.

Thank your stars that the smoke-eaters you despise had the smarts to bring you the battlefield dregs they didn't kill, for you to entertain and interrogate. Generally true, but reality is a bit more nuanced. I was a mustang, so I've lived both sides of that coin. Officers can be very good, and they can be very bad (interestingly, in my experience ring-knockers were overrepresented at both ends of that bell curve). Same is true of enlisted.

I was frequently both amused and annoyed after getting my bars by the antics of enlisted members who were unaware that I was former enlisted and knew exactly what kind of crap they were trying to pull.

No one is more professional than I.
I am a Non-Commissioned Officer, a leader of Soldiers. As a Non-Commissioned Officer, I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as “The Backbone of the Army.”
I am proud of the Corps of Non-Commissioned Officers, and will at all times conduct myself so as to bring credit upon the Corps, the military service, and my country; regardless of the situation in which I find myself.
I will not use my grade or position to attain pleasure, profit, or personal safety.

Many of the actual serving Officers might be OK. (might. be.)

The Zampolits though. Don't even take the time to put them up against the wall.

548 Competence is my watchword.
My two basic responsibilities will always be uppermost in my mind – accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my Soldiers. I will strive to remain technically and tactically proficient.
I am aware of my role as a Non-Commissioned Officer; I will fulfill my responsibilities inherent in that role.
All Soldiers are entitled to outstanding leadership; I will provide that leadership.
I know my Soldiers, and I will always place their needs above my own. I will communicate consistently with my Soldiers, and never leave them uninformed. I will be fair and impartial when recommending both rewards and punishment.

549 Officers of my unit will have maximum time to accomplish their duties; they will not have to accomplish mine. I will earn their respect and confidence as well as that of my Soldiers. I will be loyal to those with whom I serve; seniors, peers, and subordinates alike. I will exercise initiative by taking appropriate action in the absence of orders. I will not compromise my integrity, nor my moral courage.
I will not forget, nor will I allow my comrades to forget that we are professionals, Non-Commissioned officers, leaders.

550 544 No, officers are necessary, as are enlisteds.

A healthy military depends on a good working relationship between the two, especially between the senior NCOs and the mid-level officers.

551 NCOs are the US military’s greatest strength — and one of Russia’s biggest weaknesses

552 551 SMH, you are correct. NCOs are just the highest level of trash in the Russian army. It is one of their greatest weaknesses.

Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at November 19, 2022 03:09 AM (atmen)

553 544.

Agreed. FULLY.

But I'll add also. Both must remain aware of and seek to advance, the more suited Jr. Enlisted who might arrive into their ranks.

NCOs and even Mustangs arise from such, and it is on the Officers and NCOs to sight those talents, and advance them as needed or when possible to do so.

Secret sauce. Higher ranks who advance their subordinates to become their equals? Senior Officers notice this, and tend to advance the NCOs who advance their enlisteds. (someone needs to tell this wee tip to the jr. ncos out there, btw)

I wasn't being flippant in one regard . I have multiple young men, most I've known since they were young, who are active military . I still respect our military. The minute their boots are standing on our soil ready to take up arms against their fellow citizens, they become the enemy .

557 553 Agreed. I withdraw whatever misinterpretations I may have absorbed from your previous postings, and my overreactions thereto, on this site.

As Gen. Suvorov said (quoting Napoleon, I think), “It’s a poor soldier who doesn’t want to be a general.”

558 The mention of officers and who is better stands true with me. You guys know me, the one thing I don’t do is lie.

I have been lucky to have experienced the officer world vs the enlisted world first hand. My father was an officer, and I was enlisted. I knew a man who was enlisted min Korea, and an officer in Vietnam. Great man there no doubt,

But that guy was not unusual back in the day, these guys were heroes but that is just what they did. The funny part is he went from a ground troop in Vietnam, to a Marine Aviator.

I also know a Marine we loved who was a Gunny during that time. He was so famous and loved, Gunny became almost his first name. He ended up a Captain, and possibly. More, but to us and his friends, he was always. Gunny.

560 SMH.

I was in a Peacetime Military, which is the worst time of all to have served.

Downsizing, rank compression, fear of expulsion and compliance to policy, you name it, it sucked.

Still, a bold Officer or NCO could make a Squadron or change a command. Leadership exists even in the lower ranks, in SPITE of it being stymied, above.

I've seen a Brigadier stricken out of the Service, by the bold action of an E-3 USAF cop, who made the detention, wrote the report and STOOD. HIS. GROUND. Know your Rocks and Shoales, or other Service equivalents.

565 My f up. The man I was referring to was an enlisted Marine infantryman during the Korean War. He was a Marine aviator in Vietnam. What he did stands out, that is why I am mentioning it today. But at the same time, those stories are standard, at least they were back in the day.

Older cousins husband was a Marine Sgt. He was amongst the first deployed to the Nam in 65. He became a DI after he came back . My cousins kids, when they were older, would occasionally answer their dad, "yes sir, gunny". It was always a lotto . He was an awesome guy

You can certainly blame the Romans for the day starting at midnight. That's what they used. But it likely goes back to the ancient Egyptians.

It was "obvious" that Noon was the middle of the day (although noon, non, used to mean "9th hour" or 3 pm, but got changed to midday, meridian crossing of Sol later), and it was the same day before and after high noon, so the day had to start at the opposite side, midnight.

The Egyptians used sundial devices in the day, but had devices they came up with to mark time at night, using the positions of well-known stars.

580 I messed up an earlier comment. I was talking about a Marine. He was a grunt in the Korean War and a Marine aviator in Vietnam.

I have mentioned this before but that is ok. I don’t compare this to anything else as the people I was talking about before are legit war heroes.

But I did see a legit unusual situation. There was this out of control. Drill Sargent during basic training. This guy was a legit monster called Mad Dog.

I went back to the same unit a year later, and the guy
Was a Captain and a chaplain. You talk about a change.

583 The new Quantum Leap is alright. It's woke, but it's not too woke. The only white male character is a gay liberal, but there is no preachiness in the leaps. Non-white male characters get to be the bad guy and white males the good guy. The Old West episode was preachy woke. Of course with The Halloween Exorcist episode it was necessary for the cast to express their proud atheism, but the episode wasn't full on bigotry against religion. Everything that happens eventually has a secular non-spiritual explanation, but there's no anti-Catholicism preaching. Expect the bias, but so far the show isn't hating on conservative straight white Christian men.

585 So here is the deal for fuckheads who want to ride their motorcycles really fast in rural communities in which they don't live. How can you tell they don't live there? If they lived there they would probably know this already. Always be aware at dusk and dawn of deer moving to and from the fields in which they graze and to the cover in which they sleep. This is the primary time you will hit a deer.
