LIFEHACK: the easy way to carry two dogs.

They're trying to discover the Cuteness quark.

Lazy day.

Cat defends his stray dog friend from another dog.

Eagle stretching his wings before take-off.

Doggie rickshaw service.

Baby elephant wants to say Hi, but Mama elephant says no.

Slacklining across mountain peaks.

Dog sees people exchanging little bits of paper for food. So he gets something that looks like a little scrap of paper and tries to buy some food!

And he's not the only one who tries it!

This dog is a little heart-thief:

20 Chinese Dragon gang brawl breaks out at 100-person party inside Tokyo skyscraper
https://tinyurl.com/5vxkb73f

There were having a party because one of them just got out of prison in August, as they were all members of the gang known as Chinese Dragon.

The party got started at around 6 p.m., but it only took about half an hour for things to turn thuggish. At some point, a brawl broke out, with a group of about 10 men throwing fists at each other inside the posh establishment. The police were called, but by the time they arrived most of the members of the party had fled the scene, leaving overturned tables, smashed glasses and beer bottles, and a broken door behind. Only one person from the party who remained behind was hurt, a man in his 20s who'd suffered light injuries, but the presence of unaccounted-for bloodstains suggests some of those who'd made their escape before the cops showed hadn't gone home unscathed.

I think that among the reasons the Nazis are more popular than the Japanese in popular WWII media is

1) The Nazi fights were in and for places that people had heard of and cared about like Paris instead of other side of the world unknowns like Tarawa and Peleliu.

2) The fire and movement of Market Garden or the Bulge is more exciting than the long, hard slog of digging Japanese out of caves, tunnels, and entrenchments.

55 I own "The Pacific" on DVD. I think it's very well done. The racist angle is incidental. All you have to do is go back and look at GI training films from the Pacific theater, watch one for about 5 minutes. The racism angle worked both ways as the Japanese certainly considered themselves superior to all other races, even other Asians. Many still do.

56 Schwarzman's history of supporting R candidates seems a bit incoherent. Presently he is clearly leaning away from Trump and towards McConnell's, but this may primarily be due to what he hears from the media and in social circles. He seems like a squishy sort of Republican, not because he has intrinsically left-wing views, but because he doesn't have clear right-wing ones that he holds in confidence.

75 Speaking of downer movies - i watched "la bete humaine" by Jean Renoir (story by Emile Zola) from 1938. True classic, influential in creating the film noir genre, which is why i watched it. The End.

Well neither really had that much chance of failure. I think the only amphibious invasion of WWII that failed was the first attack on Wake in 1941. Everyone did their utmost to get on shore and stay there and if it was dicey they didn't pull the trigger in the first place.

But Japan had no chance to win their part of it, the production difference was just too much. It was just a matter of time even with Europe getting most of the resources.

Posted by: sven at November 16, 2022 08:11 PM (Lzpvj)

There's not really a make-or-break everything depends on this amphibious assault in the Pacific. The Battle of Midway was a game-changer for the Pacific campaign, but imagine that D-Day fails? Could add years to the Reich's lifespan.

That the battles are bloody doesn't necessarily change how much danger any given battle presents to the overall campaign.

101 The Pacific Theater in WWII was different, inasmuch that the Japanese truly fought, both on offense and defense, with a savagery and beyond limits of Chivalry or Honor as those words were understood by Western forces.

Fighting to the Death or such, wasn't unknown in the Western militaries, but instances tended to be exceptions, and tended not to end in suicidal charges. Additionally, though far from perfect, most Western militaries did accept surrenders, and trusted that their surrender would result in more or less honorable treatment. Japan? Surrender was worse than death, and the surrender of an enemy was accepted only with the deepest contempt for the surrendered, and resultant cruel and inhumane treatments.

MUCH more outright HATE on the Pacific Battlefields, like it or not, that's what was.

102 Speaking of downer movies - i watched "la bete humaine" by Jean Renoir (story by Emile Zola) from 1938. True classic, influential in creating the film noir genre, which is why i watched it. Good film right up to the point where the main character, who you empathize with, strangles the girl he loves to death for no real reason and then hurls himself to his death off a speeding train. The End.

103 77 D-Day is ultimately a big gamble as military operations go. I think outside of some incredibly lucky events like the Battle of Midway, the Pacific doesn't have as much potential for true military defeat/disaster on a campaign level.
Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at November 16, 2022 08:05 PM (eYoxG)

Posted by: Oldcat at November 16, 2022 08:12 PM (eoQWY)

The difference between the success or failure of D-Day just comes down to the Germans being in the right position or not. The campaign hinged on its success so failure would have meant massive delays.

D-Day had no real chance of failing. Utah was a walkover, and the British beaches were miles inland. Omaha might have been evacuated but because it was in the center advancing forces would have likely joined all the beaches fairly quickly. The US air cover and naval gunfire would and did limit the freedom of action of the Germans.

Both the Sicily and Italian invasions had large German armored attacks that made it scary for a bit, but the weight of metal ended up blunting and stopping the attacks. A similar one in Normandy would have had even less chance with the bocage terrain working for us.

This is a good point; if he wants to move the company out of Commiefornia (a very smart move) it would make sense to do something like this, because the ones with marketable skills are likely to not go along with the relocation unless they get a lot more than 3 months' extra pay out of the deal. Also, the ones more likely to back away from openly promising to work long hours tend to be olders, have families, etc. which again means more cost and reluctance to move.

Still think it's risky.

D-Day was highly likely to succeed on the actual day of because of very successful intelligence and deception operations. Not the same as the lucky break at Midway, but it's easy to imagine a scenario where a slight reveal of information or happenstance changes how D-Day went.

I understand his nerves, but we really weren't running close to the edge at all.

The planners, and Monty, did lots of work to make it so that it could not fail. The upping of the scale to 5 division front made it so that the Germans just couldn't attack the whole front and wipe it out. Turns out 6" and 12" guns are great anti-tank weapons. The question then was the race between adding troops over the beaches and them adding troops overland. Rail interdiction and airpower meant that units could only travel by night by road, and much of the support trucks were lost to air attacks.

We even lost one of the artificial harbors to a storm and we still managed to out-reinforce the Germans. Then we had the job of rooting them out of the bocage which took about a month or two.

Now if you want to see crazy hairbrained scemes, look at the German attack on Norway in the face of of the RN in 1940. And even that was pulled off.

Sven, indeed, correct. I was in 4th grade, appx 1967. Unabridged version of Gualalcanal Diary in the bookmobile. Vivid photos of U.S. tanks sporting the severed heads of Japanese soldiers, adorning the front fenders of the tanks, tied to the headlight housings. Meant to send terror to the Japanese soon to be overrun by said tanks. Yep, U.S. forces could exchange the savageries. And that's one huge reasons the U.S. forces HATED the Japanese. It turned our "civilized" guys into unholy savages, and we did NOT have the cultural tools to deal with those degrees of darkness, especially in the post-war civilian world.

Look at the records of how long it took the Germans to move troops in France in 1944. We had massive air interdiction blocking rail and road transit, and all troops moving south lost many supplies and support weapons to air attacks. That's why the deception was planned in the first place.

About a month later, I went by to see my advisor and told him I was leaving. The campus atmosphere was intolerable. This was a common experience for Vets.

I'm playing a insanely detailed Pac War computer game (1 day per turn, every ship and cargo ship and plane, named captains and pilots...) and I tried to make the battleships play a part early on in 1942 and their lack of AA and escorts makes them very vulnerable to torpedo attacks from the excellent IJN air forces off the carriers. 226 223 I think Ace's larger point is politicians aren't "bought" by donors. Open borders donors didn't buy Mitch McConnell. They donated to McConnell because he was already open borders.
Posted by: Wally at November 16, 2022 09:14 PM (SEmGF)

If that's what he's saying I disagree. Most politicians don't have strong beliefs on most issues. The campaign donation though generally just buys you access, not the favor. Purchases of favors happens later.

Right, and it's not hard to see why a big globalist business would donate to DeSantis just like it's not hard to see why they would donate to Trump before him. Consider the alternative.

Furthermore, the donor class is entirely cynical. They want to donate to winners. Hillary's donor sheet may have been farther to the right than the Republican Senate caucus.

266 Won't say ace has a "strawman" in the sidebar as I sure, I've seen people make the arguments he's talking about, but what needs to be said on the subject is that on both the small and large scale Trump didn't stab us in the back for the interests of the megadonors who roundly despise us. In that sense he was his own man.

Whatever his fuckups, he continually tried to keep the promises he made during his campaign, and he did not sell out his own voters by calling them extreme or racist or terrorists, as is the usual GOP megadonor bitch way.

The argument is that it remains to be seen what ***anyone else*** who takes money from megadonors decides to do for that money once they have the power and means to do it.

268 In 2016 Trump won the primary and by doing so set an entirely new course for the Republican nominee. It was his America First policies that became the coe of the Republican platform. This was the difference between Trump and every Republican nominee that came before him since Reagan. Traditional big dollar donors were forced to accept his platform.

Traditionally, candidates run on the platform of the donors. Trump flipped the script. Why is anyone surprised some of them don't want that to happen again?

>>Trump became the Republican Party's presumptive nominee in early May, when both of his rivals dropped out of the race. Trump self-funded much of his primary run, but he has said he will not rely as heavily on his own money for the general election, when he will face the Democratic nominee.

https://tinyurl.com/yckphwf3

The argument about funding is in the primary not the general. Trump is still the outsider candidate. Nothing has changed.
