Gun Thread: Sunday Gun Day Edition!

tshirt 111322 scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Last week I mentioned planning a trip to the farm-o to shoot with our pal and delightful 'ette Julie, the 2022 NoVaMoMe winner of the Dream Date with Weasel raffle drawing. Welp, a hurricane hit Florida and rolled up the East Coast dumping a lot of rain on Friday. The farm-o got a couple inches of the wet stuff yesterday, so here I sit Saturday, not shooting with our pal and delightful 'ette Julie, but rather writing the Gun Thread and looking at the mountain of wet leaves in the front yard. Since the farm-o is no fun-o when it's wet, we've rescheduled the DDWW for this coming weekend. More details to come!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

Last Sunday I included a video on how to use something called an Israeli bandage. The video and topic of first aid at the range generated a lot of comments and I think it's worth exploring a little more. Here is what I wrote last week in case you weren't around.

First Aid

So here's something important to know, and that's how to stop bleeding. Whether you're at the range, or in the forest with a chainsaw, blood belongs on the inside of you and your pals. Should someone develop a leak, being able to stop it might very well save a life. Here is a link to the Israeli Bandage on Amazon. These things are inexpensive, folks, and there is absolutely no reason not to have one in your range bag. You don't have to go all nutty, but having the first aid basics covered with band aids, tape, and a few other odds 'n ends won't take up a lot of space and sure are great to have when you need them.

And here is the video again:

Do you have a first aid kit handy when you're shooting?

In discussing the topic, I'm not only referring to the aftermath of a gunshot wound. In my experience small cuts and scrapes aren't all that uncommon at the range. There are many different ways they can happen, whether it be from bullet splatter on steel targets (wear eye protection!), injuries from a pistol slide (slide bite) or frankly any one of a number of things. Having the ability to treat small cuts and abrasions, blisters, or God forbid, a gunshot wound on the range is important.

I have mentioned this before, but I have assembled a fairly comprehensive trauma kit which I keep at the farm. I have done so because I am in a remote location some distance from medical care, and pretty much everything I use at WeaselAcres is designed to kill me. Guns, chainsaws, the tractor and implements - the list is long and impressive. Should an accident occur, I am going to have to deal with it myself, then somehow get to a hospital or other medical facility.

Not all of you are going to have those specific circumstances to deal with and your first aid kit can be very basic to treat minor boo-boos and patch yourself (or a range babe) up. Again, some Band-Aids, antiseptic ointment (I like Neosporin), alcohol wipes, gauze bandages and wraps, small scissors and tweezers are all items to consider. I have a much smaller range kit with those items that fits in a small pouch inside my range bag. Just do an internet search or visit your local drugstore and you can pick up the basics fairly inexpensively, or simply purchase a ready-to-go kit. Whatever route you choose, know the contents and how to use them. If you purchase a kit take the stuff out and look at it so you'll know what you have and can add to it if needed.

I used to do a lot of hiking and volunteer trail work, and many years ago took an excellent 3-day Wilderness First Aid course. The objective of the course was learning to assess injuries, treat them, and keep an injured person alive in the backcountry who was more than 48 hours from definitive medical care. It may be overkill but I absolutely recommend this sort of training. I also recognize it represents an economic and time commitment not everyone is going to make, so perhaps look into a simple Red Cross First Aid class or find something on basic wound care online.

Lastly, and this is important, make sure all the participants in an activity understand what to do in an emergency. Our pal Scuba_Dude reminded me of this after the TXMoMe. It's important and more than a little embarrassing because it's something I was trained to do and keep meaning to do during the range safety briefing. You can be certain it will be included next year. Should a serious accident occur in a group setting, you want people to know what role they have and who will call for help, render first aid, tear up sheets and boil water, etc. It's also important for the participants to know their exact location in terms which emergency responders can use and not spend precious time trying to find the accident scene, and what to say when calling for help. Hysterically screaming into the phone that someone has been shot probably isn't going to be helpful, and might get the SWAT Team involved rather than paramedics. Stating there has been a training accident involving a firearm very likely better describes what is going on.

So what do all y'all think? Range first aid could arguably be a much longer discussion, but this should get the ball rolling. Anything to add?

Guns of the Horde
Literally, Guns of teh Horde. Here's something or pal blaster made his own bad self in the blaster laboratories.

b gunpic1 111322 scaled.jpg

Here's one you haven't seen before: That is a blaster's blaster Model 1. I printed it. Well, some of it.

So, first and foremost - this is 100% legal to make and to own for my own use in my state. Second, this is NOT a how-to, this is a review of the process and the output. There are other places to go for tutorials.

So what are we looking at here? Is that frank, or is that beans? The part that I printed is the frame - just the part below.

b 111322 rawframe1 scaled.jpg

That is a FMDA (for Free Men Don't Ask) DD19.2. It is for all intents and purposes a Glock G19 Gen 3 frame. It has some design features that optimize it for printing. In a Glock, the frame is the serialized part that is "the firearm." The files to print it are available many places, you don't have to design your own. If you know anything about 3d printing, it's pretty straightforward, BUT - if you don't have the right settings, you won't get good results.

b 111322 mistake1 scaled.jpg

To get the printed part up to speed as a functional frame, you need to add rails, locking block, and a lower parts kit. These are easily sourced - you could get all from your favorite online auction site if you wanted. There is some amount of labor to clean up the print - sanding and filing, though a decent printer with the right settings won't take very much. A few tools are helpful - some metric drill bits, hobby files, a plastic hammer and some punches. Once assembled, you get the following
.

b 111322 lowerpic1 scaled.jpg

And then the slide. I chose a Palmetto State Armory Dagger slide because it was very economical. The result is that the bb Model 1 is quite the Frankenglock. And there is every bit as much metal in it as in a Glock from the factory, so only part of it is or can be printed. Then two big questions; does it shoot, and will it blow up? First, yes, it shoots. 30ish rounds at 5 yards are the ones in the center target below
.

b 111322 target1 scaled.jpg

And not too badly. At 10 yards its a different story (lower target), but I blame the sights - they are 1/3 co-witness height sights and I am not used to the sight picture yet. With 40 rounds through it, no signs of any issues with the frame. No cracks, no pieces fell off, it just, well, worked.

Finally, here is a video about 3d printed guns. It's from Vice, so, yeah, not necessarily pro-gun, and the dude has no real experience and its kind of a Gorillas in the Mist thing, who are these gun people? Despite all of that, not a bad video, but its half an hour if you have the time.

So here is the video blaster included. What do you think? Are you printing our own? Thanks blaster!

Training Report
A while back our pal Schnorflepuppy attended a two-day training course, Street Encounter Skills and Tactics by FPF Training with instructor John Murphy (links below). Does this sound interesting? It does to me!

I attended this class over a Saturday and Sunday, both full-day sessions. Prior to the class, John assigned us to watch a YouTube playlist he has curated with lectures and real-life examples he wanted to discuss in class. John is a former Marine and DoD civilian employee whose worldview would be familiar to a lot of the Horde, and he doesn't hold back from giving his opinions as to the state of things.

Saturday included no live fire or dangerous weapons of any kind. In fact, John had us unload and show clear our carry guns on the range before placing a rope through the magazine well and barrel, which he would periodically ask to see before drills that involved drawing from the holster. We started out the class with a brief "stop the bleed" technique review, and all students were issued ankle-mounted medical kits which we were expected to carry and use throughout the weekend.

John distributed inert POM pepper-spray trainers to the class. He demonstrated methods by which to draw and make ready the hot sauce from a discreet position clipped inside a pocket, followed by a long discussion on when and how to deploy the spray for maximum effectiveness, and then plenty of opportunities to practice these tactics.

We had a lot of discussion about the legal implications of use of force, and a long and sobering discussion about post-incident actions from the 911 call to the police interview room. Alongside many other incidents, John reminded us of the fiascoes that the George Zimmerman and Kyle Rittenhouse trials became, including the unethical behavior of prosecutors who withheld evidence -- and those were high-profile news stories with the whole world watching. The message was clear -- folks on our side of the force equation should not expect fair treatment by the "justice" system. John was a big proponent of STFU -- even leading the class in several "GIMME AN S" cheers -- when dealing with the police. His takeaway phrase from that lesson was "don't volunteer for the meat grinder".

Sunday was live pew-pew day.

Instead of the usual distances in yards, John denotes range to target in more practical terms:
- 1AL - one arm's length
- 2AL - two arms' length
- 3S - three steps
- 1CL - one car length (specifically, a Toyota Corolla)
- 1TL - one truck length (specifically a Ford F150)
- 2CL - two car lengths

This was helpful in contextualizing the distances at which we were shooting into everyday measurements.

The most innovative part of John's training was the use of laser pointers and peripheral vision practice to cue when to shoot, and when not to, rather than using a timer sound or verbal cue. He rationalized that most encounters will start with a visual cue, rather than an auditory signal. His scenarios allowed us to learn and practice various responses that we might employ, ranging from verbal warnings to lethal force, based on the behavior of the adversary. Because the class was held at an outside range, we had ample opportunities to practice moving off the line of attack, shooting then moving, and other tactics that would be applicable in a real-life fight.

John also takes the time to work individually with shooters on their draw, presentation, and firing mechanics. He observed that my M&P Shield 2.0, which I sadly lost off of a bridge over a river on the way home, was too small for the size of my hands so I'll be canvassing the rental selection of my local range to start testing out bigger guns. He also noted that my speed to first shot was inhibited by my use of the Shield's thumb safety, which was engaged when I carry, and advised me to get used to carrying without it.

John carries a couple of rigs to move targets both laterally and uprange/downrange. Shooters had to deal with a target that zigged back and forth in front of "no-shoot" targets, as well as a plastic dummy charging directly at us! We only loaded one round in the chamber and an empty magazine for that drill, to avoid over-excited shooters spraying rounds in unexpected directions under stress. Even when you know it's coming, it's much tougher to deal with an advancing target like that.

It was definitely time well-spent and I would encourage anyone to train with John when he's near you. Check this link for his course calendar. Even other instructors recommend John's course, see Greg Ellifritz's review. It was in one of Greg's courses earlier this year that I learned about John's upcoming training in the area. Greg's another good trainer, and his articles are interesting and thought-provoking, especially the Weekend Knowledge Dump.

Hey! I thought the Gun Thread was the weekend knowledge dump! Seriously, great review, Schnorflepuppy! Sounds like some very good real-world training. Has anyone else taken an FPF Training course?

Cigar of the Week

This week our pal and Chief Gun Thread Cigar Correspondent rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the Gilberto Olivia Reserva Blanc.

rhomboid Gilberto Oliva Blanc 111322 scaled.jpg

Many cigar smokers like a variety of styles and strengths, many prefer mild to medium most of the time. Anyone who fits in these two segments of the market should try the Gilberto Oliva Reserva Blanc. An Ecuadoran Connecticut wrapper, with Nicaraguan fillers, it is a smooth, mild, yet flavorful delight. Construction is flawless, burn line is uniform, smoke volume copious. My notoriously incapable palate thought it detected cocoa, sweet wood, and some toasty nutty flavors at points during the burn. I tried the corona vitola, 5 3/4 X 44.

The Gilberto Oliva Reserva line, named for the late patriarch of the Nicaraguan cigar family who are giants in the industry, features two more styles, a medium blend with an Indonesian Sumatra wrapper, and a full bodied version with a powerful Honduran wrapper. I certainly plan to try the medium (the Reserva). The Reserva Blanc is available online for as low as $3.50 but generally goes for $5 and up. In the picture, that is a thin cedar wrapper around the lower part of the cigar, a nice packaging touch.

Excellent, rhomboid! Thank you!

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

18 And, to stay on topic, I have been doing a little gub bodging. I have a "Chinese Mystery Pistol" which is a nickel-plated knock-off of an FN Model 1900, except it was chambered for 7.63 mm Mauser ammo instead of .32 ACP. And distinctly larger!

Well, I could never get it to fire. Decided the root of the problem is that the chamber is damaged, and the cartridge doesn't headspace properly. So I bought a Tokarev TT-33 barrel (new, in Cosmoline) from Marstar in Canada, and am in the process of trying to make that barrel fit the receiver.

20 The voters of the State of Oregon, in their infinite wisdom, barely voted in an absurdly unconstitutional gun measure (which among other things requires the cops to interview and test every gun owner in the State of Oregon, and repeat this every five years - no funds are allocated to do this).

One of the provisions is that magazines over ten rounds are illegal - but existing magazines that you own are grandfathered in. Somebody already asked how you prove that you already owned the magazine - it's not like there are serial numbers on them. The law solves this problem by flipping the usual burden of proof - it’s not up to the state to prove that you purchased the magazine after the law went into effect, it’s up to you to prove that you purchased the magazine before the law went into effect.

A number of rural Oregon sheriffs have already announced that they aren't going to enforce this stupid law.

37 Considering the B-17 had 12 .50cal machine guns and the P-63F had been equipped with 1 37mm cannon and 4 .50cal machine guns; this might just barely fit on the gun thread.

Here is a guy who uses the known footage of the collision between the B-17G "Texas Raiders" and the P-63F to try and take an educated guess on what happened.

What I had been saying as a possible cause, the P-63F pilot lost situational awareness is what this person is also saying but with more information and greater detail.

38 I did get to directly apply some materials from my First Aid Kit while on the rifle line at the TxMoMeet. Guest's ladyfriend crowded the scope on his .308 a bit too close, and got quite the scope cut above her right eye.

I was able to soak a paper towel with bottled water, clean, daub and dry the area, then apply gauze and paper tape to hold the gauze. Typical face/head wound, lotsa lotsa blood. Gutsy lass, she then resumed her place behind the rifle and carried on with her shooting.

Later, her gent re-bandaged (and made a neater job of it) the dressing in their tent. (yep, they'd camped in the RV area), and shortly after, AZ Deplorable and his bride went to the tent, where they applied a clotting bandage, while holding the edges of the cut very closed-up. The cut could've qualified for stitches, but the pushing of the wound edges close together combined with the clotting bandage, will likely result in less scarring than what stitches might leave.

Good teamwork, no panic, all the way around.

39 I took what was back then called, Mountaineering First Aid course, from the Seattle Mountaineers Club. It was several days long and covered lots of issues relating to hiking, climbing and other possible misadventures. Not just mountaineering. It was a great course, taught by experts, when that word meant something. The final test was at night, walking along trails and suddenly confronted by emergencies. 45 While shooting with my SNL a few years back at our favorite indoor range in Sterling VA, we were setting up on the outside lane...the one against the wall. Bang...bang...bang...a typical range day.
Then suddenly...Ow!
Near as I could tell, a bullet fragment had split on the lane over from ours and ricocheted off the wall back along our lane hitting my SNL in the shoulder.
Lessons Learned:
1. ALWAYS wear eye protection the moment you enter the shooting area.
2. Avoid the lane along the wall.
3. Do NOT pick the bullet fragment out with your fingers. (Even if it is just sitting there.)Those suckers are sharp as hell and hot!
4. An alcohol swab and a simple bandaid worked in this case so keep plenty in your range bag.

57 Range report and then the content:
I bought a second PSA Dagger grip module and slide, separately. I opted for a non-optic slide with lightening cuts. Mostly because I could complete the pistol for UNDER $300 this way. (Seriously, if you have spare cash, bookmark PSA's deals page)

I actually think this second Dagger's trigger is better than the first! Lighter, crisper break, still has a lot of takeup but...better. The word is that PSA keeps iterating on their designs, often without formal announcements of 'generation'. This seems to fit.

I also found my first real grip with the Dagger, instead of push pins like a G19, this uses roll pins that do not tap out easily. I was going to replace the trigger to play around with the build, but I'm not confident I can get these pins out and back in without dinging the frame. So...stock pistol they shall remain.

Anyway, did some side by side testing with the optics-mounted Dagger I have over 1200 rounds through now, and found....groups are tighter with the optic. I really see the difference going between 20 and 25 yards. At 20 yards, I'm getting hand sized groups in the A zone, at 25 yards, they're spread out. 1/2

59 Last week I passed my first firearms licence test [multiple-choice 'written' and practical with weapons] with 98%. I lost 2% because in the indoor mock range, handling the second weapon, I pointed the muzzle in an unsafe direction while picking it up from the table where the weapons were laid out.

It was about a 9-hour safety course, with lectures based on the government safety handbook's contents; and practical handling of PAL licence allowed weapons: break-action shotgun; bolt-action rifle [sporterized SMLE!]; lever-action rifle; pump-action shotgun; and semi-auto hunting rifle. Then a one-on-one, 15-minute practical test with me randomly assigned the break-action shotgun and the lever-action rifle. [Muzzle-loaders also okay but not tested with those.]

65 Range report 2/2

At closer range, groups are tighter with the optic, but not hugely. Also did side by side Dot Torture drills with both pistols and...very little difference. The problem is always with me forcing the break, with a steady press, guns both shoot dead accurate with the sights 'on' hold. But I am consistently pushing shots down a few inches, at all ranges. Frustrating. Lots of dry fire drills in my future. But, no variation right to left, the pistols fit my hand very well, better than all Glock generations.

I gotta say...these Daggers are going into my carry rotation full time and replacing the G19. For $300, these are seriously good pistols.

Other than that, the Nurse REALLY seems to like the Springfield Armory EMP Ronin. Like a lot, a lot.

The idea the faster plane was trying to hit the other plane ... well if it was a jihadi at the wheel, it does look like that. But very unlikely ... still, a pretty big mistake, and almost certainly a tragic "mishap".

78 MAE,
I also found my first real grip with the Dagger, instead of push pins like a G19, this uses roll pins that do not tap out easily.
-----------------
Two observations. One is that some firearms have one way directional pins--they go in one way and come out the way they came in. That could be the problem. Another is that the pins got a bit warped on install--sometimes pins get a bit bent going in or out if forced.

As a general rule, I always use a bit of Kroil (penetrating or 4-1 will also work) in a needle applicator when I am removing pins. I also put a bit of really light grease on them when I put the back in place. Apply a bit a grease, smear it around and then wipe it off--about the same practice as putting oil on a frame, you only want a thin film.

Nail set punches work quite well on most round pin heads btw without flaring or mushrooming the for install or removal.

79 I should have my safety certificate in about three weeks, and then can apply for literal licence although in December I will be taking my RPAL licence safety training that includes handguns and other semi-autos and so will be applying for that upgraded licence later.

90 BTW, I did get my Enfield magazine this week.
Unfortunately, I can't get 1 round out of it properly. I work the bolt forward and it just slams the bullet up against the top edge of the magazine. It does NOT go where it's supposed to.

I also found that the clips are not intuitive. At least not to me. I think I figured out how to get bullets into them, but no idea how to load them from there. (I was assuming it worked like a 5.56 stripper clip, but this did not want to let the bullets slide at all.)

So, it will take still more work before I can use the Enfield.

Please be careful. Chinese warlord era firearms are, at best, uneven in their quality control. 7.62mm Tokarev and 7.63mm Mauser are both "hot" rounds. The M1900 action wasn't really designed for "hot" rounds like these. Speaking for myself, I'm inclined to view any artifact from this era more as a paperweight than a functional firearm.

I am not a huge fan of roll pins but they do a good job if there is a spread of dimension differences as a roll pin will slug up a bit where a std pin should not unless mishandled. That is one of the reasons AR's use them. Which is also possibly why you are having some issues. Quality on them varies a bit too with the strength of the steel.

But, if dealing with roll pins, you gotta have roll pin punches of different sizes for the different roll pins one might encounter. I highly recommend getting a set if you have an AR. I can think of one or two firearms other than my ARs that use them but most use either round headed pins or occasionally flat headed pins. Not a fan of the flat head pins as when combined with soft steel is a PITA sometimes to get out.

110 BTW, I told the instructor that my nephew had a sporterized SMLE and he almost immediately said that it's next to impossible to get Brit .303 ammo nowadays; then I said I'd heard that and it was too bad as I planned on getting a Ross rifle with my PAL and he said he liked firing those because of the smooth straight-pull action too. So that was interesting. Posted by: andycanuck

SMLE is pretty much a handloading cartridge now in between ammo rushes. Prvi and S&B are the usual ones consistently making loaded cartridges so you have to do the watering hole trick. Sign up for alerts, etc at your favorite big ammo supplier and be the first one to get what they have in.

Some of the earlier gens/types had a service life after which replacement was recommended. There seems to be a lot of those floating around in "sportsmen" type applications Various gens (like the CAT7) are far better than previous gens. I always swap out for the latest gen. Lastly, you should always check your tourniquets condition. If they are exposed to heat, weather, sitting in your car, etc. it is better to replace them after a certain period of time. Mine are all marked with a date. But then, my father was a 68w so YMMV.

Are any of the books reference books on specific models of firearms? Out of print books can command some serious money. For example, the "Colt .45 Service Pistols" reference book by Charles W. Clawson (aka "The Big Book," considered by most as THE reference book on the M1911 pistol today) originally sold for about $80 twenty years ago. Today, it goes for over $2,000 IF you can find it.

117 Yes, .303 is hard to come by. I have 100 rounds or so, is all. If I get it working and get it sighted in, I will be looking for more. In the meantime it's 20 rounds here, 20 rounds there.
Posted by: GWB
------------------
Pardon me, I can't remember if you reload or not but Grafs and Sons often has Prvi brass when others don't for the .303. The Krag and the 303 British also headspace the same on the rim and Krag brass can be used in a pinch with fireforming. Krag brass has a bit thicker case web and so you have to start building loads after fireforming from scratch--start low and build up.

119 Gun acquistion at che Blake: There's a local pawn shop which always has a lot of used guns for sale, usually at a very good price. I wandered in and, 30 minutes later, wandered out with a Springfield Armory Range Officer 9mm.

Whoever owned the gun previously appears to have not shot it much, as it is in "like new" condition. I pulled the Springfield completely apart, well, except for the mainspring housing. Firearm was pristine throughout, other than it definitely was a bit dry, like the previous owner hadn't really lubricated it much. Hope to get out and shoot it tomorrow.

Oh yeah, the used RO was probably about $150 under book value.

123 Later, her gent re-bandaged (and made a neater job of it) the dressing in their tent.

You wouldn't wear heels for a marathon, nor would you wear running shoes to a fancy dress party. And before you start shopping, ask yourself "What do I want to do with this firearm I'm buying?" Asking that question will help narrow down the field a lot.

They are excellent as a wrap, especially with a compound fracture or where a bleed and break are involved. I've seen people wrap the crap out of a break to stabilize it. Not ideal, but it works. If you combine it with splinting material, SAM etc. they double as both a wound dressing and wrap for the splint, economizing when you have limited materials.

144 GWB, I use action dummies or snapcaps to check function along with a sharpie if I have an issue. The sharpie will rub off where friction points are in the action and magazine that can tell you what might be causing issues.

I never use live rounds for action testing. Snap caps are available for the 303 at most big gun retailers online including probably Amazon for about 10-15 for two as well as dummy ammo at Brownells. The Dummy ammo is a bit more expensive but allows you to test different bullet profiles by removing the one with it. Snap caps are solid body and better for rough testing.

Sharon, anyone can have a bad day at the range. It could be something making you less than comfortable while you're shooting (like that guy a few lanes over blasting away w/ a shotgun). You could try something that didn't work out, or something else. The only way to fix it is to get more trigger time on your firearms so that your bad day today is better than your good day when you first got started.

What's really going on here is that people who SHOULD shoot, should be shooting based on visual cues that they caught because they were paying attention. It's the people who don't grok what is happening until audio/physical cues to get shanked and robbed.

The wilderness first aid course I mentioned asked the participants to only bring their usual backcountry stuff, so there was a fair amount of improvisation creating splints and bandages and so forth. For what I'm describing in the thread, a basic and inexpensive first aid kit will suffice, with the addition of items such as the Israeli bandage. If you want to buy hard-to-find caliber ammo, try Steinel Ammo.

I inherited a rifle with an off-beat caliber size, and Steinel does make it. They use new brass, and do not sell re-loads. They are a pretty reputable company, from my limited experience.

Posted by: dartist at November 13, 2022 08:20 PM (9X/y4)

I would look at "trauma kits" on Amazon and such. "Wilderness" or "trail" sorts have the kind of things you want for big issues - big bandages, clotting sponges/gauze, probably a glove or two, and something for a sucking chest wound (even if it's just the heavy-duty outer plastic container). Maybe a tourniquet. Then you can get bandaids, antibacterial cream, and aspirin in a regular first aid kit. Most of the full-on "medic kits" and such have lots of things you're never going to use - unless you have *really* accident prone range buddies.

202 BTW, as far as little but annoying injuries....
Learn to adapt with gauze and tape. I managed to kick a sawblade barefoot the other day. It gouged right on the bottom of my pinkie toe, kind of in the fold. At first it didn't bleed, but it did a little later. A wad of gauze and some medical tape got it to stop bleeding (after washing with water, then liberally applying neosporin*). The next day I then had the wherewithal to actually get a bandaid and maneuver it about the toe and solidly against the small wound.

(* It is NOT easy to finesse something on the bottom of the outside of the wrong foot from your primary handedness. Hence, liberally applied. And hence a wad of gauze.)

206 You learn to build your kits with experience. Your basic IFAK/trauma kit is a good start (for yourself). You learn to add things as time goes on like bandaids, burn treatment, extra bandages, even duct tape. You may end up with multiple kits for different situations (range trip, camping, family trips, etc.). Think about where you are going, how far away from help you will be, what might go south in that timeframe, types of injuries, number of people, etc. I have multiple customized IFAK's, CLS and a bunch of other kits. But most important is learning how to use that kit and treat different injuries. Take a good course that NAEMS approved or your local EMS might recommend.

We've talked snap caps before around here. They are terribly handy.

Dry firing is much nicer with something for the firing pin to hit. You can work action drills (some, anyway). You can put them in your mag load* when you're shooting at the range to simulate misfires. You can use them to see if you're anticipating recoil by loading them after a regular round. You can use them when practicing draws, etc.

(* Really, have your friend put them in so you don't know when the dud will happen.)

217 200 Andy Canuck,
Lyman is the brand you want for vintage as well as modern as they use a solid aluminum body with a high density poly fitting in the primer pocket. Lyman bought Azoom, trimmed its line a bit (damn it), and the product has been around for awhile.

Carlson are a bit cheaper but not ideal for using as action testing rounds as you catch them wrong with the bolt and get a misfeed and the plastic can crack. Then there are the solid plastic body ones--not that durable, great for doing failure drills, and make sure that you have a safe rod to tap them out of the chamber.

Rimfire snap caps are all plastic and are designed for cheapness and to protect the firing pin and chamber by deforming. Some use a screw anchor as a cheaper substitute. Do not use 22 LR dummy rounds though as snap caps as that ruins them in short order as the rim deforms.

218 Range report! 496 and I went to the indoor range Friday evening. As usual, there was no one else there. I shot my Rock Island 1911, my Sig P365, and the S&W model 14-3 revolver - now officially mine! I also tried out the gubs 496 brought.

My results were mixed - pretty good by my standards, but tending high with the 1911 and low with the Sig. (But hitting paper consistently, at least, and not pushing to the right or left much.) I will blame the 1911 sights, they are almost impossible for me to see. A little paint/whiteout should do the trick. And more dry fire, I've gotten slack in that regard.

496's targets were excellent! (Weasel, I encouraged him to send them in!)

I shot a lot more rounds than I usually do and had a blast in spite of a little blood. More shooting is needed to use up ammo before I move, or the Jeep will be a low rider.

Weasel, my entire get-home bag I carry in the car is less than 1/3 the size of my range bag. It contains much more than my trauma/first aid kit. For a get-home bag or a range bag, you should really only need one of the main items. (If I need to use the quikclot bandage in my trauma kit at the range, I'm done for the day, and going home. I can restock from there.)

BTW, something no one else has mentioned, but should probably be in a range first aid kit: burn dressings. I added a couple to my trauma kit/get-home bag. Burn ointment might be all you need at the range - for range babes who don't cover up adequately, of course - but a burn dressing or two doesn't take up much space.

Don't be surprised if the Russian stuff (primers, ammo, etc.) becomes either an endangered species or completely extinct in the next year or so. It's doubtful that the import licenses will be renewed once they expire. If you want/need it, get it now before it disappears forever.

Even if the import licenses are renewed, I think the Russians have other priorities for the primers and ammo they make than selling it here.

252 In general, not wise to go to a distant range and shoot by yourself unless it is gated and for members only sort of operation. People have been shot and killed for their firearms or seriously injured themselves by being alone at the time of the accident.

I used to go to the Federal park rifle range at the Daniel Boone National Forest when I lived in Kentucky. About an hour away from our house to Salt Lick Kentucky where the range was located.

It is an unmanned 300 yard pistol/rifle range where you drive up and fill out a form and put $5.00 in the drop box to use the range and get a ticket you put in the windshield of your truck if the rangers come by which they did sometimes if they heard shooting.

There was a time or two when I drove there and left because I was not comfortable with someone that was already at the range. Usually I had the place to myself during the week, but sometimes there were other people there. Once I walked out, put my target stands out and left because someone drove up that I was not comfortable with.

6 horizontal square hangars with a blue waterline(?) target between them, all hanging from the same rail, like this:
[] [] [] [H] [] [] []
You aim at the blue target in the middle and, if your elevation is correct, you will most definitely hit one of the targets.
That shows you your wind correction. My first shot hit the 1st [] to the right of center, so I dialed wind two MOA left (about 13.5") and, claaaang!
Very cool. But you need the correct distance. I was told it was 700 yards but checked for myself. Rangefinders are good.

269 Not something I like to mention, but also always carry a sidearm open carried with you if you are shooting at a public range and best to be very careful about walking downrange and leaving firearms and goodies like ammo at the bench if shooting by yourself.

272 Please be careful.
Posted by: Ed L at November 13, 2022 07:49 PM (/lmRp)

Thanks! I think the damage to this one may well have been caused by a previous owner attempting to fire 7.62 Tok ammo. Looks like a cartridge burst in the chamber, and slammed the breechblock back. A Tokarev will chamber and fire 7.63 Mauser, but not the other way around.

The barrel in this gun screwed into the frame with about an inch of 5/8-18 thread. I plan to make a 5/8-18 threaded bushing to act as a "nut" to retain the barrel. I machined the barrel to leave a shoulder at the end to preserve the feed ramp and extractor slot. The bushing will have notches so I can turn it with a tubular spanner wrench, and thereby set the head space.

I've seen GI's head outside the wire with as many as four tourniquets, one attached to each limb for ready use. Medics w/ combat time under their belts told us that the old Boy Scout first aid guide of applying a bandage first, followed by a tourniquet as a last resort is obsolete. Any damage to an artery will put someone at risk of bleeding out before you can figure out what's going on. Therefore, the medics said to apply the tourniquet first, then the bandage. If the tourniquet isn't needed, it can be removed relatively quickly at the hospital.

Also keep in mind that the steel of yesteryear was much softer and weaker than that of today. Therefore, it will wear out faster than modern steel. 317 A good coach is worth the $.
Years (ok, decades) ago I was serious about bowling. Yes. I was serious.
I hired a coach. He gave me immediate feedback. He even video taped me back when that was somewhat rare.
He had me throwing 300s.
Same with any interest, I suppose.

327 That gun range at Salt Lick Kentucky is so remote GPS and cell phones do not work there and the only people around are Park Rangers and they are only around during the park season. It can be pretty creepy but it was the only place I had semi close by that I could shoot at 200 yards or longer.
Posted by: Mister Scott (Formerly GWS)

I have been hiking/backpacking down there with my son's scout troop years ago, and I can attest there are places there that do not have any cell coverage. It's hilly, and no line of sight to a cell tower, and they (towers) are still far away. It's easy to get out of cell coverage there. Beautiful place, though.

This is something that Elon Musk should get onto. He's going to be offering a phone soon. Why not make a product called "911 Everywhere"? Basically a satellite phone based on his Starlink constellation, combined with a GPS receiver. No capability for regular phone calls, and no subscription charges. Get hurt out in the boonies, you haul it out, power it on, the GPS locates you, and then you hit "send", and a 911 call center responds.

Browning was fortunate enough to be born in a free country that still rewarded genuine ingenuity.

If a gifted engineer came up with a paradigm breaking defense weapon that undermined legislative efforts at control, like say a MASER or pinched plasma bottle projection weapon do you think our politicians would allow the market to support it, and the people access to it?

Creators are a gift to and from their cultures, we may not invent newer better weapons but by God we have the market cornered on sexual depravities.

Browning's secret weapon was his brother who was an expert machinist at turning Browning's drawings into 3d metal actuality.

The guy behind Kel Tec is probably the closest to a mad genius designer today (George Keltgren or something like that). A few people have designed a couple of firearms but no one, not even Peter Mauser, managed to design so many different firearm actions for everything from machine guns, pistols, shotguns, to rimfire rifles

Probably no. Anyone aspiring to the title would have to invent new mechanisms for pump action shotguns, semi-auto shotguns, lever action rifles, semi-auto rifles, semi-auto pistols (hammer and striker fired), automatic rifles, light, medium, and heavy machineguns in their lifetime. Most will struggle to come up with just one, let alone more than one.

Yawn, one basic pistol design versus the sheer number of designs by Browning.

No contest there. Gaston's genius was to apply a new look at simplifying handgun design which maximized profit for Glock because it uses much cheaper parts, used modern technology on the slide with nitrided steel, minimal machining required, and stamped parts and springs along with pins and a molded frame. Cheap to make, rugged as heck, and make a fortune out of selling it to police and civilians.

As we see now, Eugene Stoner applied the same design earlier to the AR series which moved from expensive machining like the M14 receiver to a much simpler to produce and cheaper to buy off the shelf compatibility.
