First-World Problems...

5000K.jpg

The first LED bulbs were crap. They didn't even come close to their rated life, they flickered, they buzzed, they weren't tremendously bright, and the color was...how do I say this politely?...shit.

At least they were better than the execrable compact fluorescent bulbs, which were possibly the worst thing ever created by the hand of Man.

Like many others, I bought a fair number of 100 watt incandescent bulbs just to have...mostly because I dislike being told what I can and cannot use in my home.

But those LED bulbs got much better and much less expensive and much more available. And as my conventional bulbs burn out I replace them with 2,700K or 3,000K LED bulbs, except when I buy a box of absolutely horrid-colored 5,000K bulbs by mistake because I wasn't paying attention.

Wow...what an ugly and unpleasant light! I have eight of those bulbs...what the hell am I going to do with them? Maybe put them over my work bench or in the storage end of the basement?

Or bring them to the range and shoot them?

6 FWP with LEDs... buying the wrong color.
I wanted 'yellowish' light for dusk to dawn of course I ordered the wrong one and didn't note it until the old one was removed, the new one was wired, and mounted 9ft up, and it got dark.

I'm not changing it now. I'll wait for it to fail. I'm sure it'll last longer than I live just to spite me.

The problem is we're getting Used To the ungodly, harsh "white" light emanating from these chinese LEDS. These "cold" lights are messing with our brains. It's not Normal.

I'm serious. The loss of "warm" lighting is yet another society-destroying technological "advancement."

26 I like the 5000K bulbs for the garage, where I want really bright light. Otherwise, I stick to 3000K or lower.

Did I ever tell the story about how fluorescent bulbs screwed with my TV reception? Back in the day, I had a digital antenna in the attic. Every so often, when watching TV, the signal would suddenly be lost. Eventually traced it to some can lights in the basement that had fluorescent bulbs in them. When the lights were turned on, the TV would go out. Turn them off, and the TV came back. Replaced them with LED lights, and never had the problem again.

58 I like the daylight bulbs for work areas. I am gradually converting over to an all-LED environment. When my legacy fluorescent fixtures age out, they will be replaced by LED's, too.

When I have an LED or twisty bulb go bad, I take it apart and salvage components. The driver board for a twisty bulb will safely power conventional fluorescent tubes up to a 36" size. A good way to update desk lamps and appliance lamps to "instant-on".

A friend gave me an LED "high-bay" lamp, basically a drum with 9 LED strips on heat sinks forming its circumference, with a disc, studded with LEDs on its end. The driver was bad. Messing around, I found that any of these units will deliver a lot of light if powered by 16 to 18 volts DC. I built a little regulator around an LM317 regulator chip; the basic circuit you can find on line worked fine. 18 volt transformers are out there. I would stick with one regulator per LED unit. The chips are dirt cheap.

Why? They're no longer worth it (with exceptions).
Regular (Duracell or Energizer) batteries, today, have very long "shelf-lifes' and lots of capacity. Costco's Kirkland brand batteries are good, too.

Rechargeable batteries, which are all cheap chinese junk now, are good for a few dozen charging cycles. After that, they lose capacity fast.

Color temperature ratings were important if you were into photography. Color photos turned out weird if your light source did not match the spectral sensitivity of the film. Remember blue flash bulbs?

98 Had an electrician put adjustable LED (replacement) light fixtures under some kitchen cabinets and in basement ceiling. Not an inexpensive job but the visual comfort is now good.

Haven't experienced very good lifespan at all for the bulbs being used in the outside, home lighting fixtures. And, LED street lights are now accused of being blue light rich, creating pollution affecting stargazing and wild life. (It's a thing in Europe and National Geographic.)

More green environment/infrastructure improvements will, again, be the answer.

That said, the use of a thermal measure with a light measure is "meh" recall Watts worked because affordable light x produces y number of lumens at largely z intensity of "kelvins."

Just cycled through.

Back to Wayfair it went. If you're ever looking at one, avoid those with a remote control unless you'll leave the light switch on all the time and only use the remote.

I used to own a Dodge Dakota. Never once regretted buying it until the transmission started making a weird ticking noise after about 7 years of daily abuse. I bought the full size Ram at that point because they weren't moving at the local dealership and it was discounted $10 thousand. No regrets there, either.

Unless you have specific needs to haul a certain weight or volume it's not going to matter most of the time. And if you already know that you have those needs then you should already know which size truck to buy. The smaller truck will be better on gas, of course, but not by that much.

120 I bought a bunch of 4 foot LED shop lights for my garage/shop. Instead of paying about $60 or more a light (which was the going rate when I bought them) I found some for $25 each.

Well, after 18 months several of them failed. There are two strips in each light and one or the other was either flickering or dead. I pulled one apart and found them unrepairable.

Naturally they were from China. But I wonder about the ability to repair or replace the LED strips. Bulbs, whether they're fluorescent, LED or incandescent can at least be replaced.

Well, yes…it refers to the term “Kelvin”.

Which does literally have a reference to temperature. In the world of science and astronomy.

But…here it refers to “warmth”, i.e., the warmth of the light. A nice, gentle soft incandescent light “feels” like the light you might get from a candle or nice fire. It has nothing to do with brightness, and more to do with having a warm, yellowish hue.

A “cool” light is shifted to the white or blueish hue. It “feels” cooler.

Now, counterintuitively…a “warm” light has a low “K” number, while a “cool” light has a high “K” number. So, a K number of about 2200 is a warm light…while a K number of 5000 is a cool light. (And the fact that a 5000K light is also some times described as “daylight”, which seems/feels warm, isn’t warm light.)

The big problem with LED headlights is optics. It's pretty easy to make an effective tight-beam reflector when your light comes from a point source, and the filament of a halogen bulb is pretty close to that. I took an old hand lantern, and set 6 LEDs from an old TV screen into the reflector. I got a real good floodlight, but it doesn't project a beam worth shit.

165 Oregon 5 has been called for another GOP pickup, putting the GOP at 212, 6 more seats to go for the majority.

Assuming that GOP wins the races they are leading and supposed to win (CA-3, CA-27, CA-45, CO-3, and NY-22), they need to win 1 of the seats that are still being called tossups.

These seats are AZ-1, AZ-6, CA-13, CA-22, and CA-41.

AZ-1 and AZ-6 could be resolved by tonight's ballot drop, although they might split it up to keep both AZ-1 and Lake's race from being called until tomorrow. CA-13 is very likely to be a loss, but CA-22 and CA-41 look like they should fall to the GOP. CA-22 in particular is Valadao, who is a close ally to McCarthy. I'm also not confident on NY-22, that is very close and could end up being a steal like they just did in MD-6.

Add it all up and House is 220 GOP. And yes, a lot of this depends on Democrats not being allowed to steal anything else.

No, the modern Tacoma is similar in size to the 2000s Suburban.

IIRC the F150s and Silverados are larger than the old Excursions. Remember how big you thought those vehicles were? They were jarring when you saw them on the road. Now that's a common size for a truck.

(It looks like a double cab Tundra is about 7" longer than those old Excursions)

Which does literally have a reference to temperature. In the world of science and astronomy.
[snip]
Posted by: EFG at November 13, 2022 02:37 PM (Ae67h)

The tie to science/astronomy is that, as the Wiki writeup puts it, color temperature is the color of light emitted by an idealized opaque, non-reflective body at a particular temperature measured in kelvins. The color temperature scale is used to categorize the color of light emitted by other light sources regardless of their temperature. Think Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution.

Answering my own question after my brain actually unfroze (got no heat as furnace won't light), it would be the color of the light emitted by a black body radiator at different temperatures (K). Assuming a piece of iron heated, it would start a soft red (warm) and all the way to bright white at a high temperature. Probably would need a plasma to get bluish light.

Just sat through a presentation on Lithium batteries yesterday. When Lithium burns it's hot enough (3600 F) to disassociate hydrogen from oxygen in water. I'd guess the folding started the burn, then in the water hydrogen got trapped between the folds and built up until BOOM!.

There's Big Clive video where he tears a Lithium battery apart and the innards catch on fire while he's playing with them on his bench, which is where I got the idea that folding the sheet that way was probably a bad idea.

Two things going on, I believe.

Many of the LEDs you see on the road are NOT DOT approved for highway use, but Bubbas get then at Auto-zone and slap them in their 15 year old Honda.

The other is gas mileage.

I suspect the federal mandate for daytime running lights, and the reduced engine power needed to illuminate LED bulbs drives some of it as well.
It doesn't seem to be bulb life, as we have tons of vehicles with one headlight out down here.

But... CA has outlawed the things. LED bulbs lose the effect with their big electronic base. So, I had to purchase some on eBay. I've gotten lots of banned items on eBay because those sellers don't have to conform (or just don't) to CA's draconian laws. I can't tell you how many times I go to buy something on Amazon (shower head and humidifier most recently) and it says they can't ship to my area. Idiots. They can't seem to figure out it takes so much water to get your hair wet, or flush a turd. So it either takes longer to wash up, or more flushes and 5x the amount of water.

315 LED's are a huge improvement over fluorescents. I could hardly read under fluorescents and on top of that, they give me migraines.

I love everything about my new home, except mowing the lawn, which I never had to do at other houses/apartments.

Luckily, it's a normal lawn. But I still have Post Lawnmowing Stress Disorder. Every time I hear one kick on, I'm like "oh, no."

My wife and I picked up robots for sweeping and for mopping floors, and we love them. We're now eyeing a robot for mowing the lawn, which we'll buy when the price becomes more reasonable.

I remember how much I loved my Stihl MS440 chainsaw when I was lumberjacking. They make good shit. I want that lawnbot.

336 Yes, they improved. The color of the light is basically, any color you want. For Halloween, I changed my porch lights to be orange for one day. On Christmas, I plan to have them fade from red to green for a day. The rest of the year I'll just have them be normal white.

344 I use an old pet carrier. Sealed the top and sides with plastic trash bags and put newspaper inside. Several months ago a neighbor's chicken was laying an egg everyday in that carrier, until another neighbor's dog killed it. Then a week later we found 2 kittens sitting in it, siblings, almost identical except boy and girl. Added to the house cats.

Back from the hardware store. The only carrier I have is still in use for vet clinic purposes and I'm sheltering four cats. So, got a fair-sized translucent storage container and used a Dremel sawsall to chop open an entrance/exit and a cheapie 6" hacksaw to finalize the cut. Looking good so far and the cost is quite minimal.

345 I remember from high school (maybe undergrad) physics that the candela was defined as 1/60th of the luminous intensity of a square centimeter of black body radiator maintained at the temperature of freezing platinum, or something close to that. I'm sure it's been changed by now.

346 I never bought any CFLs. I switched over to halogen lights when I couldn't gat incandescents, which was not too often. CFLs are a government created problem: bad lighting, bad design, questionable longevity, insignificant cost savings, toxic hazard when broken. I went with LEDs when cost was not more than 50% above incandescents as the energy savings made up for the premium.

353 Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to my blog that automatically
tweet my newest twitter updates. I've been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe
you would have some experience with something like this.
Please let me know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and I look
forward to your new updates.
