Red Wave Receeding?

gerehamster.jpg

cainebelt.jpg

So the bad news I'm getting from various people -- Tom Bevan and Jim Geraghty, appearing on Megyn Kelly's election livestream -- is that the red wave is not a big wave at all. The "reach" races, like O'Dea in Colorado, are out of reach and will not happen.

You can imagine what that means for the other reach races we were hoping for.

Walker, who I thought would win by four points, is locked in a nip-and-tuck race with Warnock, each ahead or behind by 1%. Note that if neither man gets 50% or more, we go to a runoff in a month.

Vance is a bit ahead of Ryan but seems to be underperforming.

Bolduc, unfortunately, will probably not win in NH, and in fact might not even come close.

We will win the House. We are now hoping for a 20 seat margin, maybe 25, rather than the 30 or 40 seats we had been hoping for.

The Senate is now a more tightly contested thing. We won't be winning 5 or 6 seats, alas. Hopefully we'll still win it, but it'll be by 1 or 2 seats.

Even Spannberger has just pulled ahead of Vega in VA-7, 50.8 to 49.0. If you remember back to 2020, Spannberger was behind in the final count -- until they discovered a thumb drive containing 5,000 votes which vaulted Spannberger ahead of her opponent.

Another Red Mirage.

And now, even though she was behind by 3% with 99% in, she surges ahead by nearly two points, also with 99% in. Another last minute discovery of a thumb drive? Who knows. We all await the CIA Officer's cover story.

So only one of three seats in Virginia. It appears that the Red Wave hit hugely in Florida, but not really very strongly anywhere else.

Sorry, guys. I was overconfident.

Or perhaps I just didn't account for all the thumb drives floating around.

Question:

In 2018, Fox called the House for Democrats by 9:45 -- have they called the House for Republicans yet?

Probably less than I expected in the House. I was never confident about the Senate. I guess we'll know for sure tomorrow, probably.

I am still standing by what I've been saying for months, which is that the actual interesting outcome will be in the state and local races. Will the Republicans take any state houses or governors' mansions? How about school boards and county commissions? I dunno. I hope so. I am not all that invested in the federal elections, but the state and local levels are where the groundwork is going to be laid.

I'd rather overconfidence than doom posting - optimism will continue to sell and drive voters to us. Especially in a country that doesn't have a lot to feel positive about.

Florida may be our shining beacon on the hill going into 2024. The power of showing a functioning, economically prospering state with happy non-woke people who all come together - very powerful imagery to keep building on...

And tonight is all good news - we have stopped Dems from destroying the country rapidly...at least for the moment. For that, I'm thankful.

And if we don't get a big wave now and the Dems have to keep taking blame for an economy going more rapidly in the toilet (which they somehow have to manage) and a president who can't speak a single clear sentence as their leader...well, today, we got the the bases loaded...tomorrow, we'll hit the grand slam...

96 Just to put it out there, this is what an election without Trump at the top of the ballot looks like. He did get people to the polls who otherwise didn't go and actually did have cross-ethnic support. But demographics are destiny.

That's not necessarily to say Trump should be at the top of the ticket in '24, but it is something to keep in mind. The GOP probably still with have a 1-3 Senate majority, and with the filibuster intact it just takes 51. But whether it is '24 or some time thereafter, this will be a best case scenario for Republicans from here on out.

This election should not even have been close, and it is for all intents and purposes 50/50.

Though it looks like it may be disappointing, the important thing to remember is that Republicans do have the House. The only thing a GOP-controlled Senate is good for is if another SCOTUS nomination needs to be made, and frankly, if McConnell's still in charge, even that's of dubious value.

Even a disappointing outcome is better than what we started with.

A lot of votes still to be counted in Cobb, Gwinnett and Fulton counties, where Warnock leads.

Doesn't look good for Herschel. He got a lot of votes in low-population counties, but couldn't break through in the high density urban-suburban wasteland of Atlanta.

I thought Cobb County was a Republican stronghold in Georgia? Wasn't that where Newt Gingrich was from?

I'm not certain even those would change anything, Thomas. Demographics and internal migrations of Northeasterners and Californians have about guaranteed tonight will look like a blow-out in the future. Trump at the top of the ticket gave the GOP a better chance because he drew in people who otherwise would not vote and had actual cross-ethnic appeal. Whether he wins in '24 or not, from '26 onwards will be grim.

Florida would make a nice independent republic, though. And folks need to look at fortifying their states because individual liberty and economic freedom are about to become just as much of a mirage as Red Waves.

386 The House was strategically all that really mattered. Everything else is pretty much personal ego. Control of the Senate would be nice in terms of confirmations but it's hardly a must. Two years of blocking Democrat agenda items in the House is what was required. Ultimately the fate of the country lies with the next generations and that all comes down to what we do now. What we teach them now. The example we set. I like crying Democrats because of their smug arrogance but that's just me. Wisdom lies in knowing our fates are tied to bigger things than elections.

I got so fucking tired of hearing Bannon and other R know-it-alls saying money does not matter. No maybe money does not matter if they spend a million and you spend 500,000--or what ever in the same proportion. But with Tudor Dixon and most if not all the others it was a Dem 10 to 1, or more , spending advantage. At those levels of a spending advantage the Dems CAN and do win.
We must close the money gap to a level where it is a fair fight. 10 to 1 is difficult to beat.

397 The enemy has bureaucracy, control of money, and the media. The country is self dividing between city types and country types, and God and Satan. Being 29, I can remember when politics mostly revolved around how much of the budget was spent on social services and how much on defense. Now it's a giant total life divide complicated by the spinning of the media and the fact that politicians are mostly culturally the enemy, especially if they wish to become bigger politicians. Gotta be in the game to win. Most of the public doesn't spend any time thinking deeply about these things, they spend much more thought on college football. Exemplified by the general belief that the party supported by corporate types and billionaires is the party for "cool hippies and minorities"

450 Florida and Ohio are solidly red, but its come at the expense of Georgia and Arizona going purple-trending-blue.

Making inroads in Wisconsin is a must. It's purple and needs to become like Ohio.
Posted by: Shenanigans

I live in Ohio, and I have a hypothesis as to why Ohio, which used to be a swing state, is now pretty solidly Republican. Since 1990, we have had only 1, one term Democrat governor. Since 1994, the Republicans have controlled the State General Assembly and State Senate.
As Big Union factories have receeded, union groupthink has kind of gone away, as has the population of the bigger urban centers. Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) still firmly votes Democrat, but the population in that county has become stagnant, or declined.
So yeah, if you want to de-industrialize your state and lower a lot of people's earnings, which busted a lot of Union jobs (AFL-CIO and UAW), then things change.
I'm not complaining, but I wish there was another way to get here from there.

As a general rule, the big urban centers of any state will go Democrat. There's probably a reason for this, and you can figure it out. But until that changes, we're kind of stuck.

First of all, it's a weird as fuck state. Sorry to any PA Morons but it's just weird. Weird ass demographics, weird ass liquor laws, enclaves of Amish but huge swathes of deep-blue urbanites.

The GOP hasn't had any real success there in a long ass time so it just seems odd that so many seem to hang their hopes on it cycle after cycle only to get burned.

That depends if it was really 99% of the votes, or 99% of the precincts. If votes, you are correct. If precincts, if that last 1% are the high-population ones, this could happen.

That's out now. There's one place where a red wave came in, and that's Florida, and that will accrue to DeSantis. Maybe it's not a bad idea that Trump started taking some jabs at him a few days ago after all.

The answer is the big urban centers of every state, that vote Democrat. Figure that out. There's the answer.

The "silent Democrat urban majority". You could call it that, or there is just really good vote-fixing (and that is possible too).
The last few election cycles, Detroit was caught doing a LOT of that. That is part of the purpose of the urban uprisings we have had. Drive out more prosperous people that might get "uppity" and vote Republican, and you can guarantee a Democrat majority.

I think it's call the Curly Effect. You can look that up.

PA is a cluster, we knew it was a cluster, and Mastriano was always trailing, even Trafalgar said that. Oz is running ahead of that.

We know early Arizona totals will heavily favor dems, and that the GOP will chip away at it. NV is going red.

It's hard to explain. Actually, Human Snake James Carville explained it best years ago, that when you remove Pitt and Philthy, what you're left with is Alabama.

The problem here is that, even in counties like mine which are deeply red, there is still a very active minority of what my Dad calls the "FDR Leftovers." Old people whose parents indoctrinated them with the Gospel According to FDR, elderly former union retards who think the steel mills will come back if we can just get rid of the damn Republicans, current union retards who believe that the best way to keep their jobs at the refinery is to vote D, because the union said so and all that anti-oil stuff is just Republican Lies, etc. Add in the hordes in Pitt and Philthy, and PA is, as it has always been, blue. It always seems like it should be red, and that it might go red, but it doesn't. Trump won because the machine didn't turn on in 2016 - they didn't think they'd need it. They won't let it happen again.

621 "On the plus side, if Fetterbrain wins in PA, I can now cement in my mind that Pennsylvanians are some of the most brain-damaged people on earth."

When I lived there in the mid-00s, I watched a bunch of smug "true conservatives" and "principled libertarians" spend two years cancel-culturing Rick Santorum. They smugly congratulated themselves at his expense, as they refused to care that his loss helped give the Senate to a Mafia-stooge crook from Vegas. Why? Because Santorum had pulled for Arlen Specter in his '04 primary against Pat Toomey, in order to keep squishy PA from voting Dem for that Senate seat. See, Toomey was the "true conservative" they wanted - not so much, eh?

Back then, I saw in PA a subgroup of right-leaning voters who were too busy being self-righteous to care if even Stalin gets elected President as long as they can backstab other right-leaners in the general for not choosing their "perfect" candidate in the primary. They want to be the smartest people in the room, by burning the room down with everyone inside, themselves included, if others don't affirm it. "I will vote my conscience," they keep saying. Well, an ego isn't a conscience.

623 Republicans need to stop waiting to vote until Election Day. I begged my family to go vote in person early (in VA). Thankfully most did. Waiting until Election Day makes it so easy for the Democrats. See Arizona.

625 Maybe we should ask why so many people in PA voted for a brain damaged failure and wonder just how stupid the PA electorate is instead of blaming Trump before the election is over.

Sorry PA, if Fetterman wins this is on you not Trump.

I've been watching the ABC Election

ABC keeps chanting "Election Denier". Naturally, no mention of thumb drives or 1:00AM ballot reports.

ABC periodically discussed the R need for 1 Senate / 5 House flips, and they highlighted the weak-D House wins. No R wins at all.

At this writing, one of the fools is declaring "Donald Trump is the biggest loser tonight." Another is chanting "Election Denier".

This is not unbiased or balanced reporting. I detect a clear partizan slant and a slight sense of fear that both the House and Senate will flip.

----------

The GOP might make sufficient inroads with Hispanics to offset their increasing share of the population. But they will never be able to rely on polling that shows the margin of victory being supplied by a defection of black voters down below 90% for Democrats. Blacks vote based on the Friend-Enemy Distinction. They'll grumble about how the Democrat candidate sucks, they'll actually have some conservative beliefs. But when they get in the voting booth Democrats are Friends and Republicans are Enemies.

655 "And now, even though she was behind by 3% with 99% in, she surges ahead by nearly two points, also with 99% in. Another last minute discovery of a thumb drive? Who knows."

Looking at different sources, it was originally 99% precincts reporting but with only 78% of the vote counted. From that, I'm guessing what the numbers meant was that same-day precincts were reporting at 99%, while they were continuing to process mail-in votes (I would assume early voting would be lumped in sooner, but maybe that too if they weren't allowed to count it until after polls close).
