  • Twitter layoffs leave whole teams gutted albeit not literally but that would probably be an environmental hazard. (The Verge)

Half the company has been told not to bother coming back to work on Monday. Sadly for the idiots who thought they had a legal case under the WARN act, it turns out the richest man in the world has access to lawyers. The actual terminations take effect at the start of February, but people are locked out of Twitter's offices and computer network effective immediately.

Which is the only way to handle it when half your employees are mentally-impaired anarcho-communists.
The areas of Twitter impacted the most by Musk's cuts include its product trust and safety, policy, communications, tweet curation, ethical AI, data science, research, machine learning, social good, accessibility, and even certain core engineering teams, according to tweets by laid-off employees and people familiar with the matter. More company leaders, including Arnaud Weber, VP of consumer product engineering, and Tony Haile, a senior director of product overseeing Twitter's work with news publishers, have also been laid off following Musk's firings of Twitter's senior leadership last week.
A lot of those teams sound like they could be removed entirely without anyone noticing - and apparently the curation department was. That's the team that - among other things - edited the trending topics list whenever the peasants start getting ideas above their station.

  • Latest kitchen toy is a slow cooker, which I am really liking so far. Since I often have to work late, the ability to put dinner on at lunchtime and then eat it whenever is really convenient. It also smells great.

13 Willowed post:

587 First off, I voted for Trump -- happily -- twice. I thought he did a lot of good but overall his presidency is at best even, but more likely can be considered a failure. That failure is partly Trump' fault. He stuck with people too long, trusted some people too easily, had no real consigliere and was, of course, bombastic.

-----

I couldn't paste your entire post, but I agree with most of it. I will vote for him if he runs and wins the nomination, but my gut feeling is that the window has closed and he should take the role of kingmaker. Yes, I believe that he won in 2020, probably by a large margin. But, the reality is that Biden was installed, the deep state won that round. They aren't going to make it any easier for him in 2024. Frankly, while the general public may remember the prosperity that Trump fostered, they are probably exhausted with the accompanying drama.

I think boring but effective will sell well in 2024.

16 I also hope that Trump doesn't run, but takes on an adverser roll. The main street media will tear him apart just like before. CNN will thank their lucky stars that he is running, as it gives them a new lease on life. (they think). Time to move on to a new generation, and I don't mean the AOC type.

And this pisses me off. The fact that they didn't legitimately criticize the things that could be criticized, but made up hair on fire crises and even 2 impeachments out of whole cloth just to score points and exhaust us so that we decide not to re elect an effective leader simply because we are tired of the bullshit from the left.

47 And . . . the evening and the morning were the Saturday! At last!

I'm not surprised at the cancellation of Westworld, only that it lasted at all. A couple of years ago I got Season One on DVD and it was dull, talky, and slow. Okay, fine, an exploration of "what does it mean to be human," but we got that in the original Blade Runner 40 years ago. And the Michael Crichton film almost 50 years back had suspense too.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 05, 2022 05:46 AM (c6xtn)

48 Leftworld's audience reach just got more selective...

I watched for 1.5 seasons and mostly enjoyed season one as chronicled here then a funny thing happened on the way to the rodeo....

a show that was deconstructing the western in a non-hateful way went full retard. I think the cognitive dissonance of a bunch of twats who hate babies as a form of life via abortion expecting people to take seriously the human rights of functional blenders was a bridge too far.

The modern one was about-rape bad and slavery bad.

Posted by: sven at November 05, 2022 05:54 AM (Lzpvj)

54 Ace, I think, nailed the reason for so many "shows" today being slow and with very little rapid plot development. The producers expect the viewers to be *on their phones while watching*. The viewers will watch for "twists," but they are checking their Twatter or Farcebook or email, and only look up when something major happens (or their social media tells them something major has happened). So a rapid story would leave modern viewers lost.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 05, 2022 05:55 AM (c6xtn)

55 Wolfus, fun fact for you. In the Genesis story, Torah refers to a first day, a second day, etc. but Friday is written as the Sixth day and Saturday as the Seventh day, because these days are different and special.

56 55 Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 05, 2022 05:55 AM (c6xtn)

In leftworld's case in particular there was a reliance on the replicant nature and nigh indestructability of the hosts.

Jeffery Wright was one of my followers on twatter when it premiered and he gave a good performance and I told him so at the time. Thing is the skill of the actors was definitely not evenly distributed and I also told him that while acknowledging that lay mostly with the director.

The wife was enthusiastic for the show, but right around the time the writers raised the middle finger for the sixth time we found other things to do.

69 Love slow cooking in a "crock pot". It's the cold weather alt-universe to summer grilling. It's difficult to screw up a slow cook Cheap meats come out incredible, make their own gravy and the sides are right there in the pot for minimal cleanup. You could put an old boot in a crock pot with a can of soup, msome water and some Lipton's powdered soup mix and it will come out incredible.

You will learn to love your slow cooker. There's a vast array of delicacies you can prepare in it, besides the usual stews and chilis.

One thing I never liked about a slow cooker is the need to sear the meat in a separate pan before cooking.

I purchased a Breville slow cooker that includes a sear pan in the unit. But really, if you think about it, searing meat takes what, 20 minutes at most. Even if you don't have a sear pan integrated with the slow cooker, it's not such a big deal when it's time to enjoy the results!
