Amnesty?

There has been much discussion about The Atlantic's recent article that called for "Amnesty" over COVID malfeasance. I won't rehash the article here because Ace already covered it. (reminder: don't comment on old posts) A blanket amnesty is unreasonable, but what can be done to try to fix things?

It's a serious problem. When a majority engaged in bad behavior, how do you punish the malefactors without destroying society in the process? It isn't workable to lock up everyone who did wrong, nor is it just to say, "let bygones be bygones and let's move on." How do you achieve a semblance of justice without burning the entire civilization down to the waterline?

There is an example in history. It isn't an exact match, of course, but it might be close. At the risk of going Godwin, that example is the handling of Germany after the War. The problem was superficially similar: so many people were guilty that punishing all of them would have been impossible. Germany was already broken and attempting to identify and punish everyone in the remnants of that country would have been impossible without killing most of who remained.

What we ended up doing was holding public show trials for most of the worst offenders, punishing them and forcing the rest to repudiate the ideology that led to the disaster in the first place. Suddenly nobody had been a Nazi and nobody knew about the Holocaust and everyone agreed that the expansionist war had been a mistake and Germany was guilty. The first two were patently absurd and everyone knew it and the third might have been a lie in many cases, but it served the purpose. Many of the worst offenders were punished, the ideology was repudiated and the rest got to move on. There was a form of clemency - not amnesty - for the masses.

Such an approach might work in the aftermath of COVID, too. Not what is described in that article - which is a pack of rationalizations and outright lies (after all, you can't claim "I didn't know" when you silenced everyone who was trying to teach you) - but targeted punishment and general repudiation, followed by gradual normalization. The men and women who designed and implemented this disaster must be punished as the first step. For top actors in the scientific, political, medical, corporate and media establishments, there must be trials and punishments. Not all will be identified and not all identified will be punished, but the bigger names must be publicly tried and subsequently punished. The surviving enterprises must be allowed to be sued into oblivion to compensate - however poorly - the people they hurt..

Then all that they did needs to be repudiated. There need to be real apologies from most of the remaining executives, professors, bureaucrats, media personalities and politicians, coupled with mass resignations, the closure of entire corrupted institutions and a changing of the guard at the rest. That we will never, ever attempt this again - including specifics like "it is forbidden to close churches and businesses in the name of public health" and "the government is not an arbiter on who is 'essential'" and "the press shall be liable for censorship and calls to violence" and "employment shall never be tied by law to medical decisions" - must be codified into law. The entire ideology of technocratic control that led to the COVID response disaster must be made so toxic that it will be nigh on impossible to find anyone who will ever admit to having subscribed to it. Amnesty? No. I think that a form of general clemency, however, is possible if the prerequisites are met.

I'm not going to hold my breath. It would be a tall order even if we'd achieved victory.

If it turns out that evidence can be produced that it was lab grown, funded by Fauci, release through incompetence, and then Fauci and the medical establishment over-reacted out of fear that they would be blamed for millions of deaths (as I and many others here believe), I don't want amnesty and show trials. It's an interesting contrast between Germany and Japan. Both countries were reduced to smoking ruins, but the Germans seemed to embrace their guilt much more than the Japanese. To this day, Japan really hasn't acknowledged their guilt, and still try to rationalize what they did. OTOH, the Japs definitely absorbed the lesson to not start things, and were able to rejoin civilized society again. A good book on this is Embracing Defeat, by John Dower.

The Japanese abased themselves after the War. They haven't acknowledged their guilt and never will, but they did internally repudiate the conditions that made their imperial ambitions possible. MacArthur had a lot to do with that.

It's like when you plead guilty in court and allocute for a lesser sentence. You must recount what you did, express remorse, and (usually) do it without making excuses. This, while not enough, is necessary for any kind of amnesty.

Another analogous institution that comes to mind is the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that came from the post-Apartheid period. Regular people had the opportunity to give testimony to the harms done to them in that period. This type of commission would do what Nuremburg did not - I'm not sure whether actual Holocaust victims had a chance to testify in a live hearing setting. Something is lost when you submit documents, rather than see a live victim. There were lots of those in this case.

Also, the American Church, and American Business writ large really let the people down. They have a lot to answer for themselves, and a Commission could address that.

MN needs something like this. As it is, when the emergency powers were granted to the governor, they remained until revoked by the state legislature. With Dems controlling one house of the legislature, that was never going to happen.

Of course, it may not matter much. Our local city council voted to extend emergency measures for, I believe it was 90 days, when the statute they cited clearly said it could be for no more than 30 days. I even pointed this out when asked for public comment.

I've said this before, and I still believe it, so I'll say it again. The world suffered from a mass psychosis due to its reaction to COVID. A reaction that shut down the world economy. The only way to break that fever was to get a vaccine that people trusted enough to get out of their homes and reengage with the world. To restart our supply chains alone was worth at least having a minimally trustworthy option.

The mandates however, were a different story altogether.

Now, underlying all of what I just wrote, was the fact that we had IVM and HCQ as cheap, viable options that could have made shutting things down unnecessary in the first place. People need to be drawn and quartered for making those therapeutic interventions illegal to administer or recommend.

The vaxx companies had this mRNA technology around but could not get much more than experimental use. They persuaded Trump apparently that their technology could be deployed rapidly to stop the spread and then it was that it would reduce death as a treatment, and so on.

Thus, the entire Big Med establishment eschewed any treatments for the symptoms which was what was actually killing people and focused on preventive measures when the horse had already left the barn. Big Med also pushed Remdesivir (run death is near), put people on ventilators, put those sick with Covid in nursing homes, and other deadly measures. The Atlantic is the trial balloon venue for the "COVID is over" faction. They tried it in August of 2021 and failed. They tried it again - this time with help from other publications - in December of last year when Omicron was hitting full force and they stuck with it. They took the lessons learned from the first failure and retooled the message, then expanded it.

I suspect this is the same thing. This effort will fail, they will look at the reactions, retool the message, and try again in a few months, probably post-election, so they can try to finally end this era and pivot to other priorities.

There's a large family at my church that held onto their masks for far longer than anyone else. I was using them as a gauge. All of their masks are gone now.

That doesn't mean that covidiocy is over, but it's at the fringiest of fringes. There are still some people with masks (almost all black people) in the church, but the woman who completely derailed a meeting about first communion last year because of covidiocy isn't wearing a mask anymore.

No, it's a fact. Anyone who believes there was any chance of going back to the days when we had civil political discourse and settled things fairly at the ballot box and then moved on has not been paying attention over the last 50 years.

Remove the idea that it was poison or significant vax injuries. Yep. A friend's daughter (sophomore in high school) just collapsed on a volleyball court during a match a couple nights ago. She suffered a seizure and stopped breathing for about a full minute. No history of seizures for the girl or her family, but she was fully vaxxed and boosted.

I misread your intent then. I am not sure that what you would see on films would not be scapegoating by the average Japanese. The Germans did the same thing--I never knew what those evil bastards did--why did the US not punish them.

Note that in a lot of cases, the countries themselves could have quite easily tried and convicted their own war criminals. Germany actually did so on a few individuals. To my knowledge, Japan never did anything of the sort.

Regarding post WWII, the US intel community was primarily concerned with the Soviets and the knowledge they were seizing from scientists captured. So, we did the same thing using the ends justifies the means and like in Benghazi, what difference does it make now. In Operation Paperclip and the like, the public was never told who the US brought in until years later. In the case of Japanese war criminals, I have no doubt that would have caused a political firestorm in the US.

I think the problem is with the conception of permanent allies to begin with.
