The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I think what Kanye West said is abhorrent. And based on what I have read from his former family members and associates, I think he may also be mentally ill.” NBA Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban.

Quote II

“Inflation is a worldwide problem right now because of the war in Iraq and the impact on oil. And what Russia is doing — I mean, excuse me, the war in — in Ukraine. And — I’m thinking of Iraq because that’s where my son died.” Resident of the White House MushHead

Quote III

He fucked up Afghanistan.
Not content with allowing Americans to die unnecessarily Afghanistan he wants to shed blood in Ukraine.

Two bombshell reports by the Associated Press and Washington Post Monday and Tuesday have confirmed that the United States has boots on the ground in the Ukraine conflict. Crucially, these troops are performing tasks separate from mere embassy security.

The American troops are said to be performing "inspections" of US weapon caches after last week the State Department and Pentagon unveiled a new plan to track US-supplied weapons in efforts to implement accountability for the billions of dollars worth of arms and ammunition transferred to Ukrainian forces since near the start of the war eight months ago.

"A small number of U.S. military forces inside Ukraine have recently begun doing onsite inspections to ensure that Ukrainian troops are properly accounting for the Western-provided weapons they receive, a senior U.S. defense official told Pentagon reporters Monday," the AP/WaPo reporting revealed.

Is the "Right" learning how to fight like the "Left"? It is starting to look like it in certain areas.

Critics of President Joe Biden staged a protest Tuesday above a major road to Washington, D.C. during morning rush hour which included a large animated penis and signs urging Democrats to “suck my dick.”

Shaun Porter, a YouTube performer, placed several signs on a bridge over the 270 spur in Maryland that read “FUCK BIDEN,” “EAT MY ASS” and “DEMOCRATS CAN SUCK MY DICK 2022!!!” according to several photos and videos shared online. Men in costumes including a cowboy hat and a Care Bear costume waved signs from a truck on the bridge, and at least one woman drove up to the bridge to express her anger over the signs.

Recently the boss (Ace) covered the Atlantic Magazine's article about the post-pandemic forgiveness kick. My thought, if we are going to move forward those in the wrong must admit they were wrong and must be punished. Then we can forgive them.

Now Paul Joseph Watson weighs in. Always interesting.

Forgive and forget? Oh hell no.

Many of you know that I'm a dog lover. I've had dogs almost my entire adult life. I won't bore you with all of the spending I've done over the years. But there is one thing I won't do. And that is to make a dog skin rug.

After a family’s beloved golden retriever died, they found a unique way to remember him.

They hired Australian company Chimera Taxidermy to turn the pet into an ornamental rug.

It was their dog and they are free to do with it what they want. I for one would not do it.

Thanks to CBD for this link on the sidebar. It's so delicious I decided to place it into The ONT. Our country has produced a lot of worthless people.

Is there hope for people such as this?

You have that blubbering fool in the previous story: Then look at 5 year old Easton Oetting. He and his father make the best of Easton's medical condition. Pretty damn cute. Even if he is an Edmonton Oilers fan.

Five-year-old Easton Oetting is a big fan of the Edmonton Oilers. Easton also needs a wheelchair to help him get around.

With the help of a handy father, Easton had the perfect costume for Halloween.

No word if Mark Cuban (See Quote I) supports: 'Top German Official Calls for Cancellation of Upcoming Roger Waters Concert Tour'

“For years, Waters has been using his reputation to agitate against the Jewish state in a defamatory way and to question its legitimacy,” Becker said. “Waters is a bad example of aggressive, Israel-related antisemitism and he should therefore not be given an artistic platform in Hesse.”

Waters’ “This is Not A Drill” Tour in 2023 will see him playing at venues across Europe. Concerts in the German cities of Hamburg, Cologne, Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt. Becker called on the organizers of the May ’23 concert in Frankfurt, the largest city in Hesse, to cancel the event, echoing a similar call issued last month by Ludwig Spaenle, the antisemitism commissioner in Bavaria, for Waters’ concert in Munich to be canceled.

A wrong turn was the right move. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Brendon Birt said he took a wrong turn down the road in Red Oak and just happened to see the fire starting. He immediately sprang in to action, screaming and pounding on the windows of the home.

Tender Lehman and her husband, the owners of the home, were in Montana for a family emergency. Their three children were home alone with their 22-year-old brother.

"Like every second that was going by was just getting worse," Birt told KCRA.

The smoke alarms were not going off. The banging and screaming eventually woke the siblings up.

147 How to conquer the lowly box of Kraft Mac n' Cheese. (besides tossing it into the bin, that is)

Gently melt the correct amount of real butter, add milk per the box, bring both to a steaming hot temp. SLOWLY sprinkle in the powdered cheese mixture, blending constantly. Break up any and all chunks of powdered cheese, till every bit of it is in solution. Hold on the lowest possible heat.

Boil the pasta to your preference. No need to add but a wee pinch of salt, there's LOTS of salt in the cheese sauce. Collander off the water, put the pasta back into the pan, and then begin to stir in the melted cheese sauce, till all is mixed.

This rids the stuff of it's powdered cheese badness and texture. But it won't do a damn thing for the flavor. You're stuck with that, unless you add some bacon crumbles, which being bacon, saves the day!

I make them in the back of the new boyscout mess tins, the round ones that are deeper than a usual pie tin.

They aren't hard to make, you have to be able to make a crust and it is a good way to use the rest of the stew or roast chicken from the store.
I will make gravy to put over the cooked meat and veg, and then close with the crust
I can't make a crust to save my life, but that's OK because I am the only one eating it

Basically this 100% has to do with Kanye acting pro-Trump, but since they can't cancel him for that they're going after him for these innocuous statements. They're trying to do the same with Kyrie Irvin.

If they really cares about anti-semetic remarks they'd be canceling the entire rap and black sports industry, as they all feel this way about Jewish people owning the teams. They'd also start protesting every Democrat who meets to get the blessing of one of the biggest anti-semites in US history, Al Sharpton.

Oh yeah they'd vote out their whole female Anti-Semite caucus that they love so much.

I don't care much for Kanye, think everything he does is self serving, but this "Kanye is an anti-semite" stuff is BS, as Kanye is just talking like every other rich African American entertainer.

Unfortunately, they were too early to market with a "premium" brand, and it went nowhere. 10 years later and they might have had something.

Trying to fulfill Jim SND's challenge to come up with thr 50 classical music pieces every Moron and 'Ette should know. Pieces we got, but which ones?

There's two ways of doing it. One is the familiar things you may have heard in a cartoon, TV show, commercial, movie, etc. The other is the truly greatest works representing the apex of Western Civilization. There's not a lot of overlap between the two.

For example, we've all heard Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries. A good piece, but nothing next to the less-known Prelude to "Tristan und Isolde". Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra is familiar to everyone but it shoots the bolt in the first couple of minutes. Far greater is the Final Scene from "Salome".

See the problem? Suggestions welcome.

You go with the greatest pieces. When a composer writes a piece, you go with the whole enchilada, not just the catchiest bits. If they just stopped when the catchy part ended, they would have called it a jingle, not an opus.

My go-to trick for instant mac & cheese? Use a little less water, a lot less salt, and throw all the ingredients into the saucepan together. Add a little grated fresh cheddar if you have it. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly (you gotta!), and boil until the volume reduces and the sauce and pasta both reach the right consistency. Chefs call this "doing a reduction". Vast improvement in results over the box instructions.

A problem with doing individual pieces is that there are so many great works that are not all that popularly known today.

suggestions of music most should know, even if they don't know the names.

Prokofiev, "Troika"
Saint Saens, Carnival of the Animals
Stravinsky, Firebird
Rachmaninoff (countless, but I prefer variations on a them by Paganini)
Tchaikovsky, 1812
Mussorgsky, Pictures at an Exhibition
(ok I've got Russians on my mind, dont know why)
Gustav Holst, many things, particularly The Planets
Grieg, Pier Gynt Suite

And I might help with the question of "finest work" vs. "most widely known". Can be EITHER, but which is the most important for we who do NOT know The Classics, to have as "conversant" in our knowledge and recall?

Sometimes, we really ought to know the most common, as it's the reference everyone *thinks* when mentioned. Other times, we perhaps need that bit of less widely known touchstones, for context, texture, and richness of knowledge. You're our Tour Guide here, sir. The Fifty that would be the minimum expected to be known by an Educated Moron or 'Ette, in a more graceful age and time. Thank you, sir!

480 Watching a documentary on Matthias Rust, the 18-yr old who flew the Cessna into the USSR and landed on Red Square in 1987. By a Russian TV network. Pretty good, so far. Of course, being Russians, there's more speculation and conspiracy suspicions than in an AOSHQ comments section - but it's sort of fitting, as many things about the whole affair including the Soviet handling of it seemed odd.

Apparently over 300 officers and civilians in military/defense posts lost their jobs over this.

And it all reminds me of a very curious thing I only just first read about. The still mysterious flight of a German plane to Moscow not long before Barbarossa began, almost certainly carrying the last of the private letters Hitler and Stalin exchanged. There was of course a kerfuffle over the penetration of airspace, though back then of course there was nothing like the 1980s Soviet/Warsaw Pact air defense network.

Those greens are getting cooked down pretty good now. In a few minutes I'll start tasting. I'll have to put some sugar in, then some vinegar. Little bit at the time to get it just right.

My green bean, fresh, process is thus: Chicken stock, bacon grease, green or red bell pepper, some onions, preferably red, pressure cooked for about 15 minutes. You can use ham hocks instead of the bacon grease.

For canned, including home canned, I put in the other stuff, cook it a bit, then put the beans in. The flavor doesn't seem to get as infused as with cooking them fresh, though.

IIRC, really long pieces on 78 rpm records were sequenced: side 1, side 3, side 5, side 2, side 4, side 6. So you could stack them 1, 3, 5 in your record changer, play half the piece, then take them off the changer, and restack the 2, 4, 6 to play the other half.

Are not crime, safety and illegal immigration all issues that might push voters who might have otherwise voted dem in the GOP column all over the nation?

I mean seriously if the story had been 'closeted gay man in gayest city in America injured in tryst gone wrong" that would not have bothered any member of the party of Drag Queen story hour. It would have been harmless.

I don't know if I would call it more bad strategy or bad tactics.

They wanted to make the Viet Minh come out and fight so they made a base way out in the jungle in the bottom of a valley with some airstrips. The idea was to supply the base by air.

VM managed to drag some heavy artillery to the area, set it up around the start cutting off resupply and make the defenders keep their head down while they assaulted the perimeter, cutting off the airfields and eventually taking the entire force.

Kind of similar to the battle of Saratoga with similar political results - the French were out of Viet Nam.

Stalingrad is an interesting issue. The Germans could have taken it earlier if they hadn't fucked around with excursions into the Caucasus and moved with a purpose. Also, Paulus wasn't really supposed to be in charge of 6th Army -- he was not command material but slated to take over from Keitel (or something like that). His mentor, Reichenau, who had been in charge of 6A, was promoted to AG South after Rundstet lost favor (and then Reichenau died of a heart attack/stroke/plane crash in January, 1942), so Paulus took over 6A. Without Reichenau, Paulus (who was a planner/organizer) was lost as a commander and didn't grasp the concept of getting your ass in gear. By the time he figured it out, it was too late and the slow death of the Sixth Army was set in motion.

Posted by: SFGoth at November 02, 2022 02:14 AM (KAi1n)

626 SFGoth. I'll go further.

Stalingrad should've been surrounded, besieged, isolated and BYPASSED, much like our Island Hopping campaigns in the Pacific. Strategically, it was pretty damned unimportant. Propagandawise though, it was Hitler's MacGuffin.

Same could apply to Leningrad and even Moscow. Don't bleed over dirt and rubble. Pass it by, and let the rear echelons mop up the starving rabble, sometime next year.

Posted by: SFGoth at November 02, 2022 02:14 AM (KAi1n)

My hot take is that the Germans *did* take Stalingrad - some shot up units hugging the Volga isn't significant.

The major mistake was that the Germans failed to destroy any units earlier and while the units dissolved in July, the men managed to bug out to Soviet lines and be put together. I'm not sure even neglecting the Caucasus could have helped Army Group South, since most of the troops would have had to be extended along the open flank back. Adding 2000 miles or so of front to take one city is a foolish operation, and the real problem was that with all reserves sucked into the city, one crack in the front would be all it would take for disaster. Instead, the Soviets blew the line to bits outside of the Stalingrad and it was over. Ironically, the fact that so many troops were herded into the Stalingrad area meant that for a good time lots of Soviet troops were forced to surround, watch, and reduce the pocket which reduced the pursuit back to the Ukraine.

Couldn't be done for Stalingrad. The Volga is too wide, the troops in the area outside of Stalingrad were too many - the north wall between the Don and Volga was under constant attack - and 6th army/ Army group B did not have a large panzer force to break the line and there were too few supplies and reserves to do it. They were scratching the axis allies to hold the Don flank back hundreds of miles towards AG Center. As they found out, these troops weren't equipped well enough to stand against the winter offensive that came.

Posted by: Oldcat at November 02, 2022 02:27 AM (NkGvj)

629 Germany probably could've taken Stalingrad fairly intact had it moved with a purpose from the start, something Guderian could've done. Bear in mind, Stalin was still expecting a strike on Moscow from AG Center. Germany needed Stalingrad's industrial base. Once taken, it would've Germany considerably more freedom of maneuver.

Posted by: SFGoth at November 02, 2022 02:31 AM (KAi1n)

630 Oldcat. The Volga was wide, but why cross in the Stalingrad Zone, in the first place? Send the boats across 100+ miles North or South, and pincer the damn place.

Too much attention was spent on STALINGRAD, instead of what lie to the East. Cut off the lifelines TO the East, and Stalingrad withers and dies.

A siege around Baghdad wouldn't have been glamorous, but it would've chocked the SOB into submission, all the same. Be it a year, or two, or three. Same result, finis'. Meanwhile, the REST of Iraq could have been fully invested and occupied. To shit results, and we have witnessed over the years.

633 Germany probably could've taken Stalingrad fairly intact had it moved with a purpose from the start, something Guderian could've done.

Much of the industry in Stalingrad was gone, and the transport network to the rest of Germany was insufficient to even supply the troops in the area before surrounding. They had that one tank factory but there were dozens of cities that had had tank factories that were closer - Kharkov in the Ukraine, to name one.

Stalingrad as Stalingrad was a white elephant because the Germans didn't have the troops to defend the flanks of the salient produced by taking it. And the Soviets had dedicated essentially the same force used for the counteroffensive at Stalingrad to Operation Mars - many of these could have been deployed south to meet a more successful offensive in the South.

635 Oldcat. You've made my point.

Stalingrad was a nothingburger, outside of it's industrial output, available in great duplication, elsewhere.

But, Hitler wanted it for it's name. Stalin defended it for it's name. Other than the troops it tied down and THAT strategic Kraut failure, it was a nothingburger in and of it's own reich.

636 Oldcat. The Volga was wide, but why cross in the Stalingrad Zone, in the first place? Send the boats across 100+ miles North or South, and pincer the damn place.

Too much attention was spent on STALINGRAD, instead of what lie to the East. Cut off the lifelines TO the East, and Stalingrad withers and dies.

the Volga makes a V shaped bend pointing west at SGrad, matching the bend in the Don facing east at the same point, making an hourglass shape. To reach the Volga away from Stalingrad would require an advance E of about the same distance, with basically no roads to support.

The Don river mentioned above was lined with Russians and even had bridgeheads on the German side that they could not reduce. These bridgeheads were where the counteroffensives jumped off from in November.

The Germans lacked the force in the SGrad zone to do these tricks and they should have known it.

Similar for Italian and Romanian armies - they basically had little artillery and no anti-tank guns facing Tank armies. They may or may not have been less enthusiastic than your average German, but having guns that can't hurt the enemy isn't going to improve morale.

Then he'd go back to DC and KNIFE us all in our backs. He is Eyepatch McCain, before all.

The next summer's battle of Kursk was just as bad. Even if the Germans managed to break the line, what's a few armies surrounded to Russia. There was nothing strategic there, just a bump in the line, and because it was so obvious the Russians had fortified it to the nines and stopped the offensive in its tracks after a few dicey moments in one flank. However, there were several reserve armies just to the north, and even more guarding the routes east all of which could have intervened.

In the days and weeks after, the Russians rolled the Germans hundreds of miles east. Might not have been so complete had some of those lost tanks and weapons not been expended on a hopeless and useless offensive.

I remember reading somewhere only about 5,000 German PoWs survived their Soviet 10-year prison sentence simply for being a PoW. Just look a the number of men who surrendered with Paulus. Then to have such a small number come back alive after suffering the tender mercies of the Soviet gulag. The Russian Front was hell, both during and after. Even Red Army soldiers who were captured, becoming PoWs of the Nazis and not very well treated at all, after the war received an Article 58 'tenner', a 10-year sentence for simply being captured during the war. That was Solzhenitsyn's 'crime' and sentence which eventually led him to write his masterpiece, 'The Gulag Archipelago'.

But Krauts WASTED time and effort on S-grad, of that, I'm certain. Had they blown on by, I don't think that the forces there in that city, would have sufficed to have forced a major counterattack from the rear. A harassing attack, (or attacks), to be sure. But nothing decisive.

MOST warfare can revert to old fashioned siege and hold, and it'll in time work, as in days of olde. Berlin airlift would be kaput, with some Soviet will and quad mount AA guns.

Neither side on that front had signed any Geneva Convention and likely would not have followed it. Russian POWs were routinely just not fed or given water when captured until most of them were dead. Few lasted long enough to be worked in the German homeland on starvation wages. I have read quite a few stories from other Allied POWs on how they would try and smuggle food from their not generous stores to Russians.

Agreed - the forces in the City were a spent force. What the Germans neglected is that the Russians had large and increasing forces South of Stalingrad, North of Stalingrad and Northwest of Stalingrad along the Don that the Germans were holding off with an inadequate force. The potential of these forces should have been apparent to anyone playing devil's advocate on the staff, but it seemed that there weren't any. Of course when it came time to write the memoirs, they had all objected and it was all Adolf's idea,
