Penguin Care Cafe

cochemgermany.jpg
Reichsberg Castle at Cochem, Germany (video)
This is return engagement for the castle at the cafe.

Fighting gamecock.

The lamb of autumn.

They invented a slightly more exciting form of soccer.

Dog failed lifeguard training on day one.

Big dog asserts his size privilege.

Koala, plus hidden bonus mini-koala.

Knock knock.

Puppy eating the rain.

That's not a switchback. This is a switchback.

Some days you just can't weigh a penguin.

Goodbye, little friend.

11 2nd time for that Schloss in the cafe. First photo was a shot from the castle, looking downriver.

Beautiful little part of Germany. Can recommend taking the slow boat up river from Trier, and sampling the wines and delectables at the little towns where it stops. Just got as far as that town (Cochem) when I was there, probably similar if you continue onwards.

Wines are generally off-dry whites, though with those shale hillside vineyards, I'm sure there are plenty of drier ones with mineral qualities.

Remember that elderly guy near Kiel Germany who in 2015 had his private Panther tank and Flak 88 seized by the government?

It took about six years of legal wrangling but last year the man was fined 250,000 Euros and ordered to sell them and his collection off in two years.

Well that would be one way to spend part of tonight's Powerball jackpot. Nyah.

The Grain Elevator, the Red October factory, and the Barricades factory of Stalingrad legend probably are safe as icons of modern urban battle.

And yes the phrase "champagne factory" is gloriously Soviet.

The Haida and their Northwest Coast neighbors are supposed to have resorted to eating banana slugs when they ran out of salmon. This may explain their advanced and tasty salmon-preservation methods. — Veronica Sullivan

Drinking heavily was a fad all the time. Spending extra and overthinking the medium was not part of the plan.

We used to get generic Beer in a can that said "Beer". It was pretty good too, probably from Busch beer (this was in St; Louis) that failed some test marginally or was left in storage longer than they liked. It was better than some of the low q brands about like Iron City, say.

Posted by: Oldcat at October 24, 2022 08:46 PM (eoQWY)

140 This was before Stoli was imported much in the US. It was definitely less rough than the normal Soviet stuff. But young, and not very discriminating tastes and all, so Soviet rotgut and some sparkling wine to break it up occasionally did the trick. They even had one or two flavored Stolis (only remember the pertsovka, or red pepper-infused, was OK for the time). But the 200 rubles you could get for a pair of jeans went a lot further with local fare than in the beriozkas (hard-currency shops).

Less developed countries will benefit more from capital investment and technology sharing. Their gdp per capita still isn't half of what South Korea's is. Because of their huge population their average productivity doesn't have to be high to give them a huge economy.

The US became the highest gdp western country in the 19th century, well before it became embroiled on the world stage. China actively seeks to become a superpower though.

Nothing Biden has done has helped Putin except by accident. They pointed the sniper rife at their own head and fired and wrecked the West's economy with sanctions, and Russia was a bit surprised that the financial bugaboo turned out to be a paper tiger and is being dismantled as we speak. 273 @46 If East Russia was worth anything, China would have grabbed it in 500 AD.

----

There's actually an old grudge there that the Chinese will eventually use to justify a land grab (when the right situation eventually arises).

Vladivostok and the area around it was originally part of Imperial China. But it was sparsely settled. So when the Russians offered to perform some negotiations with the European powers in exchange for ownership of the area, the Qing Dynasty agreed. However, the handful of historians I've read who talk about the exchange agree that Russia didn't even bother trying to live up to its end of the bargain. Instead, Russia swindled China out of what would become Russia's big Pacific port. It's probably the only one of the infamous Unequal Treaties that still applies today.

276 I don't think China set out to be global hegemon or even in the running for it--they want regional supremacy and couldn't care less about the rest of the world beyond any related resource needs. But they're sufficiently opportunistic that if when the declining American empire offered to shovel loads of money, technology and knowledge cuz cult of short term revenue they were plenty willing to take advantage of such foolishness.
Posted by: CppThis at October 24, 2022 09:19 PM (UewuT)

In recent years they have been buying up stuff in Africa and bases in Asia, and Pacific islands, so they were doing some of the hegemonic stuff. But that was likely to be a white elephant for them in a military sense since they don't have the navy to hold the sea lanes. So like other european powers vs GB pre WWII any conflict would tend to let the west scoop up their stuff for little cost.

What nations say about their borders on the fuzzy end of the map is notoriously unreliable. The brush strokes on those pretty maps have a lot of license.

China has lots of beefs with just about all their neighbors so I don't think Vladivostok should be high on their list. The 50 or so tank battles they've had with the USSR on the border loom a lot larger.

In the Russo Japanese War Vladivostok was so out of the way the Japanese never even went there except chasing some cruisers stationed there.

----

China's not really a super-power. Sure, it pretends to be one, but it isn't. To illustrate my point, I'll note that last week, in the same Party Congress that saw Hu Jintao get purged from the party, the CCP released a number of goals for the year 2035. One of them was to achieve the GDP of a mid-level country.

And yes, this is a downgrade from the goals put forward in previous party congresses.

I agree that nothing's liable to happen soon. For one thing, Russia and China are more or less working together right now (there's recent smart phone video of two pilots after ejecting from a fighter that crashed in central China... and one of them is the Russian who was training the Chinese pilot). But sooner or later, when relations have cooled significantly, China will start to consider whether it's worthwhile to make a play. The Chinese won't forget, and will hold a grudge until Doomsday if that's what it takes.

France and Spain used to do that pre WWI, turned out they were just building ships for the Royal Navy.

It doesn't matter what little boats they park there, if war comes the actual cargo ships will be meat on the table and if they are not self sufficient in material, which they aren't they are going to be in trouble.

It would be better to make them unabashedly peacetime bases, put hotels in the middle and lull the West for another 20 years.

345 Peter Zeihan predicts that the Chinese population will halve by 2050. That would be unprecedented in the absence of a plague, and will do very bad things to their productivity as the country ages catastrophically quickly.

He also has a very interesting chart showing that the average wage in China has increased 12-fold since 2000, and that they are no longer anywhere near being a low cost labor source.

Of course, Peter has a habit of oversimplifying, so I guess we'll see.

----

War with the US, sure.

War with anyone else, on the other hand...?

If China's third carrier works as advertised, they'll have the biggest operational non-US carrier in the world. They will also, iirc, have a bigger operational carrier fleet than any other country - except, again, the US. The navies of every country *except* the US are so small these days that quite bluntly they're barely adequate for peace-time concerns (China's got a big navy... but the vast majority of it is small ships that are limited to the coastal regions). So even if China builds it's planned fourth carrier (the one that's supposed to be nuclear), they'll still be in the "we're just safeguarding our stuff" zone. They won't be able to challenge the US by any means. But challenging US naval supremacy would require going on a decades-long building spree. And there's no way to casually sneak into that.

Not so much crossing Xi as consolidating power and surrounding himself with Yes-men. In short, everyone in an important position in China will be part of Xi's clique.

On the road in front of the grassy knoll, there are X marks in the asphalt where the first shots hit and another where the fatal shot hit President Kennedy. People were having photos taken of themselves standing on the X marks. Some were smiling, and one guy even was giving a thumbs-up. When nothing is Revered, then nothing is then left to be Respected. One does not need to have "revered" JFK in his person, but that Constitutionally created Office IS reverential, so help me George Washington.

And so, no, the clowning at the impact points in the streets is sad. Sad, and all too common.

Can't even shame them by pointing out that JFK was slain by an avowed commie. They don't even truly know what a commie is, unless they're "over 29", and that's mostly us. But yeah. The individual commie who pulled the trigger, paid the price. (see; Jack Ruby). But not the Power that spun him up for that cause and that mission. If they've paid, I've yet to see that site of the world's only 3rd atomic detonation yet fired in anger.
