A Music Thread [Joe Mannix]

Comedy music is an odd category. Done well, it's hilarious and done poorly it's intolerable. Some people dabble and some people make a career out of it. Most who try the latter will fail. There are of course some notable stand-outs like "Weird Al" Yankovic and Allan Sherman, along with less well-known examples like Tom Lehrer and Canada's The Arrogant Worms. Outside of those who do it for a living, there are a ton of funny songs by otherwise straight outfits.

Johnny Cash comes to immediately to mind, as he had several from the legendary "Boy Named Sue" and "One Piece at a Time" to his performance of "Jackson" with June Carter at Folsom. Then, of course, I'd be remiss if I failed to mention "You Never Even Called Me By My Name."

What do you think about funny music? Do you like it or hate it? Is there a track or performer that stands out?

Exceptional Live Performances
Rush's Neil Peart was one of the best drummers to ever play the game. Later on his career, during a 2004 performance in Frankfurt, Peart performed a 9-minute drum solo that showed off various styles, techniques, instruments and influences. It goes from simple to complex, analogue to electronic, rock to jazz, to blues to tribal, call-and-response, etc. across a variety of percussion instruments. It was a virtuoso performance that ended in a tribute to Buddy Rich. This takes a while to get through, though it never ceases to impress me.

Great Covers
Unchained Melody has been performed by scores of artists since its release in 1955 as a part of the movie named - fittingly - Unchained. Names big and small have done this song but none have done it so sensationally as the Righteous Brothers (well, specifically, Bobby Hatfield). It became a Righteous Brothers song as soon as they released it, and in my opinion nobody else has come close. In many ways I prefer the album cut, but this live performance from 1965 is iconic for a reason. Jump about a minute and a half into it if you want to skip the preamble.

Cool Music Videos
Although I'm not particularly enthusiastic about the song itself, this is an excellent music video. It's narrative and the editing, pacing, interleaving of scenes, sync with the music, characterizations, etc. are all very good. There is a ton going on in every shot, too, which in this case adds to it and makes it more interesting.

Arbitrary picks from my collection
In no particular order and no implications of quality, here are four songs I've heard recently. I noticed after putting this together that "love gone wrong" seems to be my library randomizer's theme this week.

The warning signs are there, but she goes for it anyway.

She's a disaster and he's getting the hell out.

Waylon Jennings - The Hunger
It's a rough lifestyle that will age you quickly and leave you empty.

Cracker - Mr. Wrong
In a song that's coincidentally on theme because it's funny, he might be a sleazebag and consorting with him would be a mistake, but he isn't pretending to be something he's not...

15 Trinity Sessions is one of THE greatest albums of all time. Misguided Angel is the first proper song, after an acapella opening of one of the covers on the album, "Mining For Gold."

Also contains the single greatest "sad" song of all time: "To Love Is To Bury." I could almost believe they wrote it with that in mind, "say, how about we try to write the saddest song we could possibly imagine." And they did.

Yeah, I like Cake a lot and several (maybe all, I'm not sure) if theri albums, but the lyrics are often ... inscrutable, I suppose. Everything from funny to fun to insane to just plain weird. "Meanwhile Rick James..." is a weird-ass track.

That album is remarkable and Margo Timmins' voice is enchanting. It's a hell of a thing to get someone like Lou Reed to acknowledge that somebody did *the* definitive version of one of his songs, but he did so for them (Sweet Jane).

I almost included him. Now I wish I had. His live recordings are often quite funny in particular, because he'll weave a tale about this that or other thing about the track or some performance or whatever, and it is often amusing.

So I ran across this band back in 2001. They're an indie band *heavily* influenced by Rush. Paradigm Blue. Bunch of college guys screwing around. They self-released an album called Liquid Eyes. It's good stuff. They're clearly young dudes but young dudes with chops. I got the CD from CD Baby when they sold indie music. Time goes on, no new music. Sad face. Well, they were just college kids.

Last month I got this itch to look them up, see if anyone uploaded their album to YouBoob. Yep, but low and behold a *second* album. Transist. Released in 2021. Can't be them. Someone else got the name, right? Nope! It's them. Now middle-aged, still indie, still got chops and still very much influenced by Rush. It's ssooooooo fucking good!

69 Ahh - I missed the hobby thread - I see that Polynikes took up the mantel of giving experienced advice on sketching, painting and drawing. He's posted some great stuff in the past.

I see that JT is trying his luck in sketching and drawing - that's super. All I can add to Polynikes advice is try some copy work from the old masters...see how they treated values, tone and perspectives. They worked out a lot of problems in those works, and once you've done enough copying, you'll work them out those problems in your own!

All I can add to Polynikes advice is try some copy work from the old masters...see how they treated values, tone and perspectives. They worked out a lot of problems in those works, and once you've done enough copying, you'll work them out those problems in your own!

Thanks. I have a number of books with works by the old masters to work from. Even the grandest Rembrandt has specific pieces that I can study and copy from. Wood grain and texture, folds in cloth, various types of stonework, the angles in a structure in these masterpieces offer endless possibilities.

Yup.

The used music store I used to go to (before I moved away - it's one of the damn few things I miss) had a continuous "Buy 3, Get 4" deal on used CDs. The cheapest item in your stack was free. I would regularly pick up three things I wanted and then just browse and pick an album purely on the artwork for the free disc - literally judging a book by its cover.

I got some real junk and discovered some new stuff I really liked that way.

Teddy Thompson (Richard and Linda Thompson's son) has one on his first album that I think is hysterical, but it's hard to describe. "Everybody Move It"- Teddy's kind of a deadpan guy and his voice is too. The lyrics are all "get out on the dance floor" but the music is very sweet and ambling along, banjo comes in on third verse, etc. Very tongue in cheek. My millennial son didn't get it, but it always cracks me up.

In case you are still with us, take the starter to a good old-time "Auto Electric" shop. These guys rebuild starters, generators, and alternators, not just replace them with a spare off the shelf. Most larger towns should have one. And they can access rebuild parts, like brushes, drives, and bushings, that you may not find on the Internet.

True]e, but she was really pretty and I think ever more importantly she had a very soft, sweet and sincere sounding voice. Andy Williams vouched for her- all combined to make it hard to believe she was a cold-blooded killer. But it made for a lot of late night comedy.

Well, it would be nice if there were a central clearing house where all active and dropped charges were registered, and that it were updated in real time. But most gummint drones are (borderline) incompetent. So the pot charges got dropped, but the clerk at the court forgot to enter it into the database? Get a piece of paper, dammit!

If you got convicted on some crime, say DUI, and paid your penalty, you are still not allowed to cross the border, because "convicted felon". Apply for, and get, a pardon, you are home free. But you have to apply for it.

In order to do really good music parody, you have to be a really accomplished musician. You cannot play a song humorously "badly" unless you know how to play it straight. Spike Jones' band was one fine swing band (Spike Jones and his Other Orchestra).

In the Before Times, kids from Michigan would go to Canada to drink because of the lower drinking age.

I never bothered because I didn't care that much, but I ended up on an expedition which involved camping at The Pinery and a visit to the Beer Store.
