Sunday Overnight Open Thread (10/23/22) TXMoMe Lag

One of the rules about The ONT is not to make it about the Cob. I'll deviate from that rule a tiny bit.

To Ben Had, Rancher Bob & Cow Horse Queen thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the wonderful venue and hospitality. The Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum and I really enjoyed meeting you. Your graciousness and warmth for a pair of Cheeseheads is memorable. We enjoyed meeting all of the TXMoMe attendees both commenters and lurkers. I really am humbled by everyone who stopped by to thank me for my AoS service. Thank you one and all.

I had no idea what to expect as this was my first TXMoMe. To be honest with you, I don't do very well in large gatherings. But, I felt at home with the best of friends. God willing and the creeks don't rise. We will be back next year. For those who have never attended. Please plan on it. You will not regret it. I guarantee it. Or your cardboard subscription back.

Now on to The ONT.

The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

‘Never let anyone make you feel like you cannot do something because of your age – because I don’t.’ 90 year old Mercy Baggs

Quote II

“This guy isn’t a career politician. He’s a contractor. He’s built a company from nothing. He’s a leader who knows how to fight and get results. Michael Bennet votes with [President] Joe Biden 98% of the time. The results have been a disaster for the American people,” Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) on the candidacy of Colorado Republican Senate candidateJ oe O’Dea

(Hmmm. Has the DeSantis vs. Trump fight started? Time will tell.

Recidivism, how does it work? Let those who are imprisoned out early in this case.

Dallas Police Chief Furious After Paroled Gunman Allegedly Kills Maternity Nurses: 'Abhorrent Failure of Our Criminal Justice System'

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia reacted angrily to Saturday’s killing of two nurses at a Dallas hospital by a man out on parole.

Nestor Hernandez, 30, was arrested Saturday on suspicion of capital murder after two nurses were shot at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

The gunman “was on parole with a special condition of electronic monitoring,” Amanda Hernandez, the director of communications for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, said Sunday, according to KERA-TV.

Our "Friends" to the north are disarming their citizens at a fast pace.

Oh … Canada.

In a move that is somehow both stunning and not surprising at all, Canada officially banned the buying, selling and transferring of handguns on Friday. People will also not be able to bring newly acquired handguns into the country.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the widespread ban at a news conference in Surrey, British Columbia.

President Trump was in Texas yesterday. He should have attended the MoMe. But, he didn't and is taking his fight against the Washington Post and New York Times.

Former President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he will sue the Pulitzer Prize Board for awarding journalists who advanced the discredited "Russia Hoax" narrative as well as for doubling down on allegedly defamatory remarks. For over a year, Trump has insisted that the Pulitzer board revoke the prizes to the New York Times and the Washington Post because the awarded reporting "have become worthless and meaningless."

What are the details?
At his "Save America" rally in Robstown, Texas, on Saturday, Trump split his attention between the future and the recent past.

An older story. But still quite interesting. Ten reasons people get lost in the wild.

Between the years of 1992 and 2007, our national parks were the site of 65,439 search and rescue (SAR) incidents. From these thousands of SAR missions, a large percentage of “call outs” involved outdoor enthusiasts who had become lost in the wild. But with all of the technology we have today—such as cell phones, GPS devices, and satellite phones—how does this still happen? We can all imagine different scenarios that would disorient us in the remote backcountry. The weather could hamper our visibility, the vegetation could limit our view, or the terrain may obscure the local landmarks. Certainly, being unlucky or under-prepared can put us in a tough situation, and one that Mother Nature may not abide. So what kind of blunders leave people floundering and lost? Read on to discover the common pitfalls of wilderness navigation, and how to avoid them.

MushHead believes he is as fit to be president, just ask Aunt Gloria.

"Well, I think Aunt Gloria should take a look. I think it’s a legitimate thing to be concerned about anyone’s age, including mine,” Biden said when asked about her concerns. “That’s totally legitimate. But I think the best way to make the judgment is to, you know, watch me. Am I slowing up? Am I — don’t have the same pace?”

What's the old saying? Even a blind pig finds an acorn. Wow, MushHead, got one right.

10/17 UPDATE: Austin Smith, 20, was arrested Saturday for giving the 10-year-old a permanent tattoo. Charged with endangering the welfare of a child and a second misdemeanor, Smith was released from custody on a desk appearance ticket and is scheduled for a November 3 hearing in Town Court.

A New York woman has been arrested for allowing her 10-year-old son to get a large tattoo across his forearm, artwork that was spotted by a school employee who reported the illegal ink to law enforcement.

Police this month busted Crystal Thomas, 33, for endangering the welfare of a child. She was booked on the misdemeanor charge and released from custody on a Town Court appearance ticket.

Thomas’s son was placed in the custody of child protective services officials.

According to police, the boy was tattooed inside a room at the hotel where Thomas and her two children reside. The Ulster County hotel is about 100 miles north of New York City.

13 Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the widespread ban at a news conference in Surrey, British Columbia.

So how did Trudeau do this? Did he put on his ermine robe and wave his magic scepter?

I mean, shouldn't the Canadian Parliament have to pass a law banning handguns or something?

Or has Canada progressed to the point where the Maximum Leader can just use the Führerprinzip to determine what the laws are?

14 RE: Genius Award

Yes, it's dumb to tattoo a kid. But... it baffles the mind how the permanence and (vanishingly small if you go to a reputable shop) risk of getting a tattoo is less acceptable than mutilating and medicating children into permanent changes.

RE: Lost in the Wild"

Back in the "80s, the sweetheart and I went to Death Valley to see the springtime flora bloom. One day, we were going away from the road a good bit, so I explained to her that she should look back and find a reference point to orient us on our return.

When it was time for us to return, I asked her to point us in the right direction. She turned back and then sort of cringed. When I asked about her reference point, she confessed that it was "gone". Foolishly, I asked what it was and she mentioned a large RV in the parking area.

89 Complete panic is setting in among Oregon Democrats.

Three Congressional seats that were gerrymandered to be Democratic are now toss-ups, and the inept Democratic gubernatorial candidate can't find traction.

It had been a three-way race between the D, the R, and a conservative D running as an independent. It's becoming obvious that the independent can't win, so her votes are migrating - to the R.

They've brought in Biden, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders is coming in this week. Cynics are noticing that the Leftist visitors are sticking to Portland, to boost turnout in Portland hopefully without the rest of the state noticing.

The plan was to keep the election close enough that the elections officials in Portland could steal it, but the margin for the R may be beyond the margin of theft.

In the Barney Miller episode "Loan Shark" Detective Wojciehowicz (Wojo) arrests a tattoo artist. During the booking, Wojo tells him that tattooing is illegal in New York City. At the time this episode aired (197 tattooing was, indeed, illegal due to Hepatitis B outbreak. New York City banned the act of tattooing from 1961-1997. So it was still illegal for almost 19 years AFTER this episode aired.

95 Trudeau's handgun transfer ban comes as no surprise, and as far as I am concerned, it is a non-issue. Stupid as Hell, of course, but that's no surprise. What do you expect from a pig, but a grunt?

Prior to this ban, for me to legally own a handgun, I would have to have a "restricted" Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL), and any handgun purchase would have to be vetted by the RCMP. And the ONLY permissible reason to own one is to take it to the range for target shooting. Cannot carry. Cannot use for home defence. Cannot even plink on one's own rural property. Why would I put myself on the State's radar screen for this totally illusory privilege of owning a handgun that I cannot use in any meaningful way?

We'll see. Hilariously, some "people of faith" in Portland got an incredibly draconian gun measure on the ballot, that among other things requires that the cops interview and test anyone wanting a gun permit, which is only good for five years. (No funding is provided for the cops to do this, of course.)

Nothing better for boosting rural and conservative turnout.

Portland's county is less than 20% of the State - even with North Korean voting levels, there is a limit on how much they can swing the results.

It can be very easy to get lost. I've spent a lot of time in the back country and am very familiar with compass and maps. I was also a surveyor at one time.

One trip to the Mount Jefferson wilderness area the foliage was so dense that two feet off the trail and you disappear. I got lost 40 feet from camp taking my morning constitution. Because I was a surveyor I did leave a trail flagging tied to some trees. It took me a bit of time to find the flagging. If it wasn't there I would have screwed.

226 We did NOT get the combination outhouse/shower house completed by the time snow came to the land at Willow this year. It is framed, and braced, but no sheathing or roofing. Probably not a bad thing, and we can finish it next May or so, but kind of a shame. It will be the big amenity up there until we get a well dug and a big ol' propane tank installed.

No more pooing in a bucket and stinking all weekend. Nearly civilized, one might say.

227 While driving home today, I was paying attention to the trucks on the road, and the number of rigs sitting at truck stops during the day.
Some were half full, other not as much, but still more than what you'd usually see at certain times of the day, especially on weekends.

I just spotted this article, and if this pans out like I think it will...

BIDEN ECONOMY: US Has Only 25 Days of Diesel Supply – Shortage Could Cripple Economy

As Bloomberg noted this week, “The US has just 25 days of diesel supply, the lowest since 2008, according to the Energy Information Administration. At the same time, the four-week rolling average of distillates supplied, a proxy for demand, rose to its highest seasonal level since 2007.”

The Biden administration has remained strangely silent, probably hoping that the dismal news doesn’t hit the mainstream because it’s a total political timebomb waiting to go off, especially as the midterm elections are so close.

Posted by: Weak Geek, looking for loopholes at October 23, 2022 11:23 PM (Om/di)

Well, theoretically, yes. In practice, it would depend upon the circumstances. Find a rusty old rifle leaning against a tree in the bush, left by a careless or lost hunter? Sure, snag it. Find a relatively new Glock in the ditch near a major highway? Probably a crime gun, too hot for the user to keep. Don't want to have that, years later, it might be used to tie me to the crime.

One thing that we do need to do is make sure that EVERYONE wears a name tag - the folks who have been coming for years pretty much know most of the people who show up, but the MoMe has gotten so big that the newbies (and some of us not-so-newbies) need a score card to put faces to names.

If I am there early enough next year, I will volunteer to man the nametag table - it's a great way to meet people!

Well, there really aren't any "northern" Provinces. I think Quebec, for historical reasons, is the only one to extend north of Lat. 60N. Maybe part of Labrador, which was a "territory" until it was attached to Newfoundland in the 1980's or thereabouts. Ontario is delimited on the North by Hudson Bay, and all the Western Provinces are delimited on the North by the 60th Parallel. I have driven across it, just to say I did. North of 60, we have two "Territories", Nunavut in the East, and Northwest Territory in the West. Not provinces. I have been to both, which most Canadians have not.

You forget the draw of legitimizing planned crimes in the future by highlighting offenses suffered in the past. That sort of thing is hard to resist if your entire cultural spiel is based on that.

China almost had an industrial revolution in the 13th Century with the Song dynasty, and after the Mongols lost their occupation, instead of continuing with it, China sucked into itself because that guaranteed power for the elites.

There is a trick you can do with a MIG welder to remove studs that have broken off flush with the head, or even a little deeper in. Use the welder to build a little pinnacle on the end of the broken stud, until said pinnacle projects about a quarter inch. Place a standard nut over the pinnacle, weld it to the pinnacle, allow to cool, and wrench on it. Almost certainly on the first try, the pinnacle will break off. Never mind. Do it again, and again, and again. Eventually, the repeated heat/cool cycles will break the rust bond that locked the broken stud in place, and the last weld will hold, and the broken stud will back out quite freely. Trust me, this works, and can be a lot faster than drilling it out. Leaves clean threads in the hole, too.

That penetrating solvent product y'all are seeing on the Late Nite TeeVee? "Superzilla", supposedly breaking loose impossibly rusted in fasteners and etc?

If you can get a sample size, give it a try. Previously frozen in bolts on my utility trailer broke-free with an overnight soak in the stuff. And when I say "broke free", I'm not talking 3ft. breaker bar.

The real test (that no solvent I know of has ever defeated). Steel bolts holding the slider to hoist the sail in the aluminum track of an anodized aluminum sailboat mast. The electrolysis on those renders the flats on the bolt to be something less distinct than any "six sided" fastener head any of us know of. If it can release that bolt, it'll be able to do anything.

I will probably try welding a nut on the stud first. I have to get the manifold off but I am soaking the other studs for a few days so I don't break them too.

This stud apparently broke while we were driving down the road, 70 miles from home. The manifold started leaking and got worse and worse as we went on. When we got home I discovered the stud was missing and broken off way down in the hole. I don't think I've seen one do that before.

Miklos is Ko and Everyone: I have to confer with Hat, but he always says ok, but still, there is a procedure. I plan on sending the invitation in late May, again in June, and possibly in early July.

385 Morning, gefolken! I woke up with Stirling the big black kitten next to me and couldn't go back to sleep. Common these days, I guess. The MoMe was a tremendous success, I see. Perhaps if I've retired next year I can drive down!

I made both the main top 10 commenters and the alias top 10? Wow!

Today I need to call or write Personnel at my work to tell them about the fall I took about 10 days ago and that has resulted, I'm supposing, in my leg pain. Commenters here suggested it might be sciatica. I'm stretching and taking it easy, and the discomfort is still not going away. Maybe some physical therapy is in order. If Personnel balks at doing something, I do have a direct witness to my tripping on the stairs.

Still is, and I plan on going back when the weather cools. We'll have to be careful and go in . Betsy's Pancake House, not that far away, is thinking of moving because its patrons have had so many car break-ins in recent months that their business has fallen way off.

391 In 389, I meant to to say "have to go in daylight." The kittens interrupted me. Somehow little Dagny manages to fit herself into a narrow shelf in my bookcase, and Stirling is fascinated by her.

They are, and at the moment that is their only saving grace.

It's amazing, the size difference. Stirling is 9 lbs, Dagny about 5 or so -- and yet they are the same age, give or take 2 weeks. Siberians grow slowly, and Dagny probably had to compete for food at the cattery. She eats enough now to make up for it.

405 Had an adventure on way home from Up North yesterday. Flat tire on the interstate. Picked up a nail or something and it must've worked it's way through then blew through the sidewall of truck's rear tire. Luckily I was close to my brother's house and he came to rescue me. However, Sunday. Nothing open except big box stores, and none had a tire in stock. Limped my way home the 70 some miles on the stupid donut spare and dropped the truck at my local mechanic's shop where I know he will fix me up. (I just bought those tires this past spring, damn it! ) anyway, my spare is going to be a real tire going forward. I've put off spending the extra money to do it. Today is the day!
