Elephant-Excavator Bonding Cafe

atlanticoceanroadnorway.jpg
The Atlantic Road, Norway

Dog heaven.

Husky choir practice. Put the crystal in a safe place before playing.

Jumping bean.

Playing fetch with yourself: trampoline edition.

Dog plays on trampoline, but then...

Your pool cover is my trampoline, human.

Hold me back, bro! Hold me back!

Beavers gonna beave.

This cat is a huge fan of the gopher from Caddyshack. (Or maybe Basil the Rat from Fawlty Towers.)

This crow (I think, not a magpie) steals from the cat, but shares with the dog. Very complicated animal dynamics going on here.

Big moose trying to navigate his huge horns through trees and deadfall. How would a bull moose flee if it had to? It can't move quickly, it has to pick its way carefully through trees. Is the point of the horns to make it not run, but force it to stand and fight?

White moose.

Otter vs. Orca: Ozzie Man review.

Dogs just want to be involved in whatever you're doing:

After the excavator saves him, the elephant turns around and gives it a friendly head-butt!

33 One of the depressing things about getting older is that you see young, wholesome-seeming girls in movies or in music and you think "Wow, gorgeous, talented, a life of happiness should await you! God has blessed you!"

Such is the tale of Arda Marred.

This is who is going to lead the way to nuclear power(natrium reactors) generation through his company TerraPower and Warren Buffets PacifiCorp. PacifiCorp is also heavily invested building lithium extraction plants at the Salton Sea. Lithium of course that will be sent over to China for all the commenters here car batteries.

76 Gates and Buffet are pretty confident in this energy transition, why wouldn't they be when our governments are going to force it on us.

As an engineer who deals in energy, there is no way this "transition" can possibly work. Sunshine and breezes are intermittent, which is death for any power grid. They are incredibly low density, making them useless for anything requiring high-energy fuel. From a practical standpoint, there's not enough rare earth minerals in the world to produce enough solar panels and wind turbines - and batteries - especially since all have to be replaced every 10-20 years.

Considering these people are on board with the "500 million" plan, their "transition" appears to be something much more sinister in nature.

There is a recurring tendency to assume that rich people are super-smart. They aren't. Sometimes they just got lucky, and absent the specific circumstances that made them rich, they would be digging coal for a living.

Born a century earlier, Gates would have been a rent boy and Buffet would be selling snake oil.

Exactly. But then the regulators require the utilities to give dispatch priorities to "renewables", so the coal and (increasingly) gas plants are forced to sit spinning reserve, burning coal/gas, until the sun sets and/or the wind dies down.

Paul Shanklin (sp?) did those. One of the things I missed about 'latter day Rush' was how the parody commercials went away.

In the 1990s he was very inventive, and had all sorts of goofy ads but after a while, it seemed he was modeling himself on Johnny Carson: lots of vacation time, guest hosts and so on. Quite true. If starting from scratch, you could build a system with distributed energy, many thousands of generators (of all types) feeding into a very complex-control system.

That is not what we have. That is not what anyone has. Even China, where I did some work on district energy systems, does not have this type of grid. Nor will they.

It's unicorn farts and fairy dust. But is sounds good to the uninformed.

169 We got to see The Nightmare Before Christmas at the Hollywood Bowl. Danny Elfman led the Los Angeles Philharmonic and all the original singers doing the score and songs live to the movie on it's 25th anniversary.
It was awesome.
Seeing Danny Elfman solo this Halloween at the Hollywood Bowl playing all his Oingo Boingo and movie hits.

170 @160. I get it. I am in Corsicana. I am hoping not to be posting bail for some of these folks.

Mrs. and I adjourned early. But we'll be back tomorrow.

180 RE the moose. Evolutionary biologist Steven Jay Gould wrote an article on the Irish elk a few decades ago - a big deer whose rack was so large as to seem impractical - problems like the moose in the video. Darwin's opponents used it as an example of "not everything can be ascribed to advantageous adaptations" and in fact they were kind of correct. The rack size was coupled to other genes that WERE advantageous. So as they were selected for, big rack was selected for. I think it is called allometry. Not sure. My Paleo classes were a long time ago.

Eventually - no more Irish Elk.
