They arrive at the club and the doorman says, “Hey, Dave! How ya doin’?” His wife is puzzled and asks if hes been to this club before. “Oh no,” says Dave. “Hes on my bowling team.” When they are seated, a waitress asks Dave if hed like his usual and brings over a Budweiser. His wife is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and says,”How did she know that you drink Budweiser?” “Shes in the Ladies Bowling League, honey. We share lanes with them.” A stripper then comes over to their table, throws her arms around Dave, and says “Hi Davey. Want your usual table dance, big boy?” Daves wife, now furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club. Dave follows and spots her getting into a cab. Before she can slam the door, he jumps in beside her. He tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it. She is screaming at him at the top of her lungs, calling him every name in the book. The cabby turns his head and says, “Looks like you picked up a real bitch tonight, Dave. Here's why, plus tips on how to make a better tasting sandwich at home (Psst, have someone else make it for you, seriously.) Life time warranties? Yes, really. Companies use a wide variety of techniques to convince us to buy their wares, and one of the most confusing is often the warranty—basically a guarantee that a product will work as advertised for a specific period of time. While paying extra for an “extended” warranty is often a waste of money, and warranties can actually restrict how we use something we own, when something goes wrong and we get a product repaired or replaced at no cost, it can be a magical experience. Most of us don’t think too much about warranties, though, because we suspect companies wouldn’t offer them unless they had good reason to believe most of us won’t ever use them. So it might surprise you to learn that a wide range of products actually come with built-in, automatic lifetime warranties. In other words, you might already own stuff that is backed by a true lifetime warranty and not even know it—which could save you serious cash and trouble if they ever break down. The 45-year-old Floridian was collared last month after a car she was driving was pulled over at 10 PM by cops in Orlando, where McMullen resides. A search of McMullen’s purse located multiple baggies containing an “off-white/tan rock-like substance” that police identified as the stimulant MDMA. Another bag of “Molly” was discovered inside McMullen’s bra. Additionally, cops say, McMullen also handed over a baggie of marijuana. Inside her bra? Yuck. Jack Black recently serenaded a young School of Rock fan receiving end-of-life care with an impromptu performance of a song from the film. The actor and Tenacious D singer-guitarist was in attendance at the Layla Paige and Friends Walk for TrinityKids Care, a fundraiser event for a hospice program providing end-of-life care to children in Southern California. A video from the October 8th event sees Black being introduced to Abraham, a 15-year-old receiving palliative care for a rare mitochondrial disease called Pearson syndrome. A huge School of Rock fan, Abraham tells Black that his favorite song from the film is “In the End of Time.” Black then gets down on a knee, level with Abraham, and busts into an impromptu rendition of the song, much to the delight of the young fan. Watched the second Bob Wills video. Reminded me of a story told by black blues guy Sonny Rhodes. He said, as a kid in Texas, he used to hang out at music halls, and make a little money by humping gear into the halls for touring musicians. One day, he helped Leon McAuliffe, the pedal steel player for the Texas Playboys, haul his instrument into a hall. Sonny said, "golly, I sure would like to learn to play that thing." And Leon said, not unkindly, "that's a white man's instrument, son, and ******* can't play it."
Well, Sonny was a determined guy, and he did learn to play it. You be the judge: https://youtu.be/_mdcDmitetk Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 22, 2022 10:20 PM (2W6VY) 53

A couple of years ago my in-laws replaced a Sears furnace that dated, at a minimum, to 1964 (I know because I found out on the Intarwebs that Sears stopped using that brand name in 1964), more likely to the late '50s when natural gas became available here (before that it was wood, heating oil, or coal).
It was still working, but parts availability was becoming a concern. Now, the new one works okay, and is supposedly way more efficient (which I have no reason to doubt). But will it last ~60 years? Like fun it will. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at October 22, 2022 10:52 PM (bW8dp) 135

Speaking of time machines...today I was puttering in the shop, tidying up, putting stuff away, poking through boxes of stuff. I found a box of parts that I had glass beaded X number of years ago. All spiffy on the outside, but what's inside? Checked out a starter solenoid. Hooked it to a six volt battery, some sparks, but no clunk. Would not rattle when I shook it. Opened it up: rusted solid inside. Stripped the copper wire and studs out of it, and into the scrap barre. Two voltage regulators, one Delco, one Autolite. The Delco was pristine inside, just like new. Put the cover back on it. The Autolite was a rusty mess. More grist for the scrap barrel.

Not god PR and a stupid business decision early in Amazon's life when it was still just a book wholesaler.

Right after WWII housing shortage resulted n a big construction boom for homes in the US. I knew a fella who bought a small home in 1948 - came with a Philco refrigerator. As of 2013 they were still using it, not as a main kitchen appliance, but as a beer and soda fridge in the basement.
One of the biggest lies out of so many, is that older refrigerators are "inefficient" and "waste energy". They actually use LESS energy, they use very little juice, as a simple ammeter will show current draw. They were still using the original gas stove. Admittedly it looked dated, and the house was cramped compared to modern standards. They raised a family there. Right on Liberty street. Patton street the next one over. Older fridges had thick walls, and were well insulated, and they used used refrigerants that were thermodynamically more efficient than the "ozone-friendly" crap they use today. Jansport and Zippo are quality products, at least they were back in the day. Cutco knives have a lifetime sharpness warranty. If they ever go dull, send them in and they will sharpen them or replace them.
I bought some 8 years. ago and was a sceptic. I like old school steel like Henkel made in Germany. But the Cutcos I have are smaller paring type knives, cheese knives etc. After 8 years, they have way outperformed my expectations. They pretty much just don’t have to be sharpened. He made the product so well that no distillery ever needed a replacement, or even a service call. He sold to all the distilleries in the country at that time, and then went out of business. They still use those machines many decades later. Posted by: Quint at October 23, 2022 12:27 AM (BXv8k) 298

Invent a thing that services that need, and services it so well, that the need ceases to be a need. Sell it to all who experience that need. Make your pile. Retire. Should that "thing" eventually wear out, or the incidence for its use increase, it becomes a new need, and a new entrepreneur can step up. Posted by: torabora at October 23, 2022 12:50 AM (Y274z) 307
The big problem with steam cleaners? You could not see what you were doing. They created a thick fog of water vapor, and blinded off the work area from your view. Wait for the fog to dissipate, but it is wasted time, while the meter is running on your steam generator. A pressure washer gets you a larger fraction of work time actually working.

My grandparents came "out here" from Connecticut in 1921. Among the things they brought were a Remington-made takedown .22 that works, several high-wheel hand cultivators that I prefer to use as museum pieces, a couple of (now incomplete) sets of socket wrenches made in New Britain, and a Peavey canthook that I will likely use tomorrow. None of them were new when they got here. Stuff can last.
