Society was poorer then. Wool was actually the best source for fabric back then as far as wear, tear, resistance to moisture, resistance to cold, ability to be washed, etc. Also, you had to have a uniform for all seasons and until roughly the time of the American Revolution, most of the English battles were in temperate climates. Plus, wool supply came from Merrie Ole England and not some foreign source.
Compared to alternatives at the time, wool was king as far as uniforms went. Still a damn good choice for all types of weather even with synthetics.

I always find contemporary 'slice of life' paintings fascinating. Sure, Michelangelo painting biblical scenes is beautiful, but seeing a painting showing the time it was painted is much more informative. It shows you how the people thought they ought to act, dress, enjoy life. It shows you the attitude the people had to their world. It shows you what they thought was beautiful, what they thought was ugly in how they chose to depict things (at least the painter themselves.)

In an age of relatively inaccurate musketry, not that big a deal. Ditto for the red coats and marching in formation. In a world of blackpowder and volleys, having uniforms that stood out on the battlefields were a virtue because you could kind of figure out who was who. Smoke and haze of battle was literally a thing back then.

Icelandic wool is dual coated. They used to comb out the fine fibers to wear close to the skin. The long fibers were used for weaving. They make yarn using both but it's not something to wear next to the skin. It's the lanolin that makes it somewhat waterproof.

It's why there is a ceiling on cheating. That ceiling was removed, not because of the use of Dominion machines, but because PA sent ballots to the entire state.
That created a giant pool of potential fake ballots that the PA Democrats used extensively and effectively.

I bought a Carhartt a couple years ago with the ... Artic something branding/schtick. Stupidly warm for how light it is. Still not broken in yet.
Still, there is something about a good wool jacket, about the warmth it confers. My sister got my Dad a bright red Finnish? Icelandic? Wool jacket and I want to steal it. $400 and this was three or four years ago on their website. I got a blue one for my mom for christmas a year or so ago.

True. Depending on jurisdiction, can include fines and jail time. If you truly don't want to be on a jury, make yourself kryptonite to the lawyers during voir dire (e.g. I always side with the police).
As far as going, if you have a "valid" excuse (doctor's note, e.g. can't sit too long or other medical condition), you can get a get-out-of-jury duty letter.
I was like that for a few years when I was on dialysis. Had restless leg syndrome from it, other issues that made it difficult to be on a jury. I can serve now, and have shown up, but have never gotten called while waiting...yet.

He called each up one by one. A couple had valid reasons but most said "I am related to a cop" or "I'm related to someone that was arrested" or something like that.
The judge seated all those people and sent most of the people that didn't raise their hands home. It was pretty amusing.

They had modern era Italian or French clothing. Both had more flair for their uniforms--I think the Italian version of a greatcoat was a stylish tan wool overcoat. The French variant was blue from recollection. But, the Italians definitely had one over the French regarding military food utensils.

Get a doctor's note that says you cant be seated for extended periods and that makes serving on a jury too difficult.

This has been my assertion for a while, at least the part about the Democrats just going nuttier. I don't know about the moderate GOPers getting harder, though.
The ambitious ones will align with the continuing ascendant MAGA wing of the party, but those still bought by GOPe donors will fold the second they get any resistance from the increasingly radical left. "We have to have abortion until 6 weeks after birth, or we'll lose the suburban wine mom vote."

The definitely have their place, for sure. Replacing corded electric in the mainstream is not reality, IMHO, but I'm not a professional. Your cost of replacing/adding batteries during the lifespan of the actual piece of equipment has to be significant.

Batteries at the professional tool level is where the big name brands make their money along with high prices on more esoteric battery powered tools.
But, I have to admit, I bought cheapo Black and Decker 20v tools when they came out and they have lasted through numerous projects as have their batteries. Lithium batteries are a huge step up from the older battery technology as far as weight and longevity.

Yes, thank you for remembering that! He has fixed the problem but found a second issue that needed attention. It required ordering a new part. That dryer is over 25 years old same as the washer and thanks to YouTube Hubbymayhem has kept it running nicely for at least the last five years.

I've always wondered about Teddy's choice of car. An Olds was a very nice vehicle in 1969, no question. But Cadillacs had a much higher cachet. And the Kennedys had plenty of dough. Was the Olds his actual car, or had he borrowed it? And if it was his, why that instead of a Buick or Cadillac? (Mercedes were available, but rarer back then.)

The trick is to not use the little batteries. You need to use 4 or 6 hour minimum. Working on my house here is practically a full blown job site with what I have been doing, and I go a few days without changing batteries in anything. I'm using mostly milwaukee fuel, and dewalt. I do have a bunch of the 1.5 hour batteries that lasted days in the drill and impact drivers while installing the kitchen.

Cotton may be more comfortable next to your skin, but once it gets wet with perspiration, and then the temps drop...you're fucked.

The tradeoff is price skyrockets substantially once you go over 2 amp hour batteries. I have power working on my home renovations over the years so I use corded tools because I simply don't NEED a full sized battery powered circular saw or miter saw. I already have premium corded ones. Ditto for routers and other high demand tools. IF I was working new construction without power, then it would matter.
Working on wood, I found actually that Bosch's little 12v impact driver did quite well and was easier to fit in tight places doing retrofits. Batteries charge in about one hour and are far cheaper than its bigger cousins. Milwaukee has a similar line.

I always looked at it like this -- GM had a car for you at every stage of your life.
20s: Chevy; 30s: Pontiac; 40s: Oldsmobile; 50s: Buick; and 60s and beyond, Cadillac. That might have been GM's general idea, but I'm sure there were young guys who jumped right into a Pontiac or even a lightly used Olds, and middle management guys who bought a Buick. My father stuck with Chevy, Impala coupes and then a Monte Carlo, all during my childhood and teen years. He'd once had a Cadillac, but I guess couldn't swing it later.

Yeah I'm not into battery miter saws and table saws, because I'm not in the field anymore. When shit gets real I'll use my corded stuff, but with whats been going on around here I would have drown in cords with all the different tools I have to use. I switched all my nail guns to cordless and it's been pretty liberating not to hear the compressor running and tripping over air hoses. I'll still use my swiss made bosch corded jigsaw over my milwaukee fuel jig saw though.
