There They Blow, There They Blow, Hot Wild White Breath Out Of The ONT!

Howdy folks! Time for the Thursday ONT. Can anyone guess by the title what movie I just watched?

Billions.jpg

Thursday Night Game

Strangely enough, I got Texas. Save on moving costs, I guess.

Speaking Of Texas

The Far left Houston Chronicle (They endorse Sheila Jackson Lee for Heaven's sake) just endorsed Republican Alexandra de la Moral Mealer over Progressive Democrat darling Lisa Hildago for Harris County Judge. Harris County is where Houston is, it's the biggest (population) county in the state w/over 4.5 million people. Here's the link but it's paywalled. This is kind of a seismic shift, and county judge is a position that wields a lot of power in Texas. It's kind of like the NYT endorsing Ron DeSantis only on the county level. I think I found a non-paywalled copy of the endorsement here. It's pretty lukewarm, you can almost see them gritting their teeth as they write:

We have always appreciated the dynamic mix of wonkishness and progressive optimism of Harris County’s first Latina judge. She’s an inspiration to many and, if given the choice, we’d rather live in Hidalgo’s vision of Harris County, where government is inclusive, transparent and ethical, policy isn’t tainted by politics, the air is cleaner, the streets are safer, more children can attend pre-K, and climate change is treated with the urgency it deserves.
But vision isn’t always reality.

Our gravest concerns, though, involve Hidalgo’s failure to respond with urgency to Harris County’s crime wave. In a county where more than two-thirds of likely voters list public safety as the most important issue in this race, it weighed heavily on our decision.
Even for those of us whose neighborhoods aren’t aglow in flashing police lights, the seemingly infinite ticker tape of suspect mug shots on the 10 o’clock news has us looking over our shoulders and praying that the next road rage incident won’t target our families.

Seems newsworthy. H/T Jim SND

OOOPSIE!

TikTok influencer says she accidentally bought a $100,000 couch and is now tearfully begging her followers to pay for it

She recorded the video in the car. Crying and with tears streaming down her face, she says, "Pull over right now because I'm about to fuckin' throw up. I just put an offer on a couch, and I was joking, but I put in my card information, and it just charged my fucking account! I almost crashed my car when I saw it because I don't have the — Oh my god. I was joking. I was joking. If you have a million dollars, could you please donate it? Can you please donate, please? If you have a million dollars, could you let me borrow some, please?"

I don't know what makes me more disgusted. Her attitude that others should pay for her mistakes, or that fact that a TikTok “influencer” had 100K in her account to begin with. Clown world.

”It's My Nature” Said The Scorpion

The Dishonest and Dishonorable Disagreements of Former Friends

Here's a long article by Michael Anton (not sure who he is. 7-8 years ago when I wrote the piece calling out THE Rick Wilson I would have, but I don't follow this stuff like I used to, too damaging to my mental health* Honestly, I dunno how Ace does it day after day) calling out and eviscerating the grifters of the GOPe.

A lot of people figured out I was the author, including people who hated the piece. But only one revealed my identity, that is to say, “doxxed” me: Bill Kristol. Bill may not know this, and almost certainly would claim it as a badge of honor if he did, but he lost a lot of friends with that action. Indeed, many people I know were angrier at him than I was.

My placidity began to give way when Bill first called me a Nazi—and then did it again, and again after that. As I have explained elsewhere, people who call you a Nazi are not your friends. They are your enemies. They mean to hurt you.

About two years after that, I attended a conference where Bill was present. I had not seen him at all in the intervening time. He greeted me with a big grin as though nothing had happened and said that, since he was sick, he would understand if I didn’t shake his hand. Of course I didn’t, but—the chutzpah! As if I would! More to the point, why would Bill himself want to shake a “Nazi’s” hand?

Perhaps only two other things are notable about that last encounter with Bill. First, he accused me of atheism. Second, he spent the entire weekend glued to his phone, scrolling Twitter.

It's an interesting read if you have the time.

*Such as it is.

Hurricane Myths

Myth No. 2: Government must stop greedy businesses from abusing customers.
Some businesses do raise prices when storms approach. Politicians call that “illegal price gouging.” This is just dumb, if not cruel.
When storms approach, people rush to buy supplies. If stores don’t raise prices, people buy anything they might possibly need, and probably some stuff they won’t need. The first shoppers buy extra bottled water, generators, sandbags, etc.
Stores sell out, so only the quickest customers get what they need.
But if stores raise prices for items in demand, fewer people hoard, and more people get what they need. Yes, it’s tough on poorer people, but the price boosts give stores extra incentive to restock. Prices quickly come back down.
Banning price increases harms more people.
After Hurricane Katrina, when John Shepperson learned that parts of Mississippi lost power, he bought 19 generators, left the safety of his home and drove 600 miles to the disaster area. He offered to sell his generators for twice what he paid for them. People were eager to buy.
But Mississippi police called that “gouging.” They jailed Shepperson and confiscated his generators.
I bet the cops used the generators themselves.
What the law calls “gouging” is just supply and demand. It saves lives.

A Linewife Explains Their War With the No-Good, Husband-Stealing Bucket Bunnies

Dateline: Earth. Sometimes men cheat when they are away from their wives for an extended period. (Sometimes women cheat when their men are away working too, but we won't mention that) This is apparently worth a long article on something that's been going on since, oh, what year was the Peloponnesian War anyway?

Salvage Opportunity

Horrific tragedy on Chinese bulker. Oct 3 UPDATE 13 died, ship’s AIS missing

The ship is now apparently deserted and adrift. I believe that makes it eligible for salvage to whoever can get a line on her under maritime law. Anyone got a spare tug sitting around?

Related: They've discovered the remains of the ship that sent Titanic an iceberg warning.

The merchant vessel SS Mesaba was crossing the Atlantic in April 1912 and sent a wireless message to the Titanic but its warning never reached the bridge.

The supposedly unsinkable ship then hit an iceberg and sank on her maiden voyage, with the loss of 1,500 lives.

Mesaba herself was sunk, by a torpedo in World War I in 1918.

Now using state-of-the art multibeam sonar, Bangor University researchers have been able to identify the Mesaba's wreck and pinpoint her final resting place.

Well, that's a pretty good ONT. Now let's see if I can stick the landing:

Nailed it.

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by the US Navy. Happy Birthday Swabbies!

The Russian side of the war never particularly made sense. American aims are also becoming difficult to grasp. If we don’t think a military solution is feasible, why are we continuing to pump the place full of weapons? Inertia? Because we don’t want to be a bummer? No matter what Ukraine policy you favor, you should want our government to clarify its goals, or at least make sure we have some. This is one situation where no plan would be more frightening than a bad one.

Pilot came on after a bit and announced that we had a minor problem, would be circling for a while and would be late getting to N.O. After a while the gear came up and we eventually safely landed. What happened is still a mystery to me. All I got from the crew was "Bu By".

135 Hey, a comment about the Lina (not Lisa) Hidalgo post.

She was elected as a fluke 4 years ago when straight party voting was still allowed and there was OrangeManBad mania that got the marginal (and fraudulent) D vote out. No one ever thought she was going to win; she was just a placeholder on the ballot. She was in graduate school at Columbia University in New York when she was elected.

Lina Hidalgo is a Peruvian immigrant who grew up in the Houston suburbs, went to Stanford, came home for a while and her entire job experience prior to being elected was being a medical translator. Not like translating medical documents, but working at the hospital and when patients came in who spoke only Spanish, she translated for them.

She was profoundly unqualified for the job. County judge is the equivalent of governor (Harris County is more populous than 22 states). She had never been to a meeting of commissioners' court. When the first emergency happened on her watch (a fire at an oil products terminal), she tweeted instructions to the county emergency services departments on Twitter. She did not know that there was an Emergency Operations Center for the county. (More)

Anyway, as a result I discovered that I broke 4 ribs and bacterial pneumomia. It's tolerable until I cough and then the pain jumps from about 5 on the chart to 8.

4 to 6 weeks of this, so the boob pics won't be a daily occurrence until the pain and infection subsides.

Anyway, I did manage to get some in today.

158 Before I lurk upon the content and comment, indulge me, please, Overnightiens.

One of my favorite, and most-reposted, videos is a montage I did of pics and vids from 2013 Oct 13, the million vet march. (Some of you may be too young to remember or appreciate the importance of events that day. Inform yosef.) To this video I've linked here every year.

YouTube has recently ruled (temporarily I still pray) that I'm unworthy to exist, so all the links and embeds of that video are cancelled.

SO I just uploaded a 360Mb WMV copy of the video to my website. Should be available for downloading or whatever your browser does... link in nic. Let me know if it was good for you.

Webpage on my site has all the source info and a big blank block where the YT embed is supposed to be.

TLDR; He wants to bring back the gold standard. It would work, as Green says. Doesn't mean it's going to happen.

The reason we went off of the GS for the 3rd time was that France was buying up greenbacks, and redeeming them for US gold, iirc. Fort Knox was rapidly being drained, so tptb (Nixon) banned redemptions. Ta-ta, gold standard, this time for good.

Still, it's a better system than valuing tulip bulbs as currency. That 'worked' for a short time too.

Biden isn't the issue. It's the meglomania of the careerists in the US (probably five eyes, too) intelligence community that drove them to overthrow Ukraine's legitimate Russia friendly government with one guaranteed to serve DC interests, which forced Russia to respond militarily in Crimea (securing its only naval base that never freezes over), then in the liberation of the Donbas (and the ethnic Russians whose Rights have been suppressed by the DC puppet regime in Kiev).

The giveaway is that only Grumman can produce a carrier rated landing gear that'll take that kind of punishment.

And before you say "BOEING F/A-18", do keep in mind that before it was Boeing, it was Northrup/Grumman. Northrup had developed the XF-17 to compete against the General Dynamics XF-16, and the '16 won that match. But Northrup brought in Grumman as a development partner, and it was Grumman which developed the landing gear as now found on the F/A-18.

An assemblage of Grumman struts and wheels on a 747 though, would just about max out the Gross High & Hot weight limits on the entire 747 airframe. They don't call it Grumman Iron Works for nothing!

If you have the time and money, you can make video of anything. Avatar proved that.

If you have slightly-less time and money, you can deepfake anything into an existing video. A dead Peter Cushing showing up in Rogue One, or a dead Paul Walker's face being written over his brother's in Fast Seven...

Give it another ten years and one incel with an iMac will be able to make a sex tape of himself and the Hollywood actress of his choice.....

331 I've learned over the years that high limits on a credit card are pretty useless, unless you are carrying balances (which I don't). You can't really make any individual purchase for over about $5K or so. Highest I've ever gotten a vendor to accept was $13K.

And they will always trigger a fraud alert with an additional verification step.

So her $100K accidental purchase story is... Bullshit.

369 The reason we went off of the GS for the 3rd time was that France was buying up greenbacks, and redeeming them for US gold, iirc. Fort Knox was rapidly being drained, so tptb (Nixon) banned redemptions. Ta-ta, gold standard, this time for good.
Still, it's a better system than valuing tulip bulbs as currency. That 'worked' for a short time too.
Posted by: GnuBreed at October 13, 2022 10:58 PM (JOtiF)

Nixon went off the Gold Standard because between Johnson's social programs, and Nixon's additions, AND the cost of running the Vietnam war and all the foreign aid, the US had to print more Dollars than it had gold reserves, and unless the Dollar was converted to fiat it would have bankrupted the US and ended the Dollar's position as being the principal currency for international trade.

The actual argument against gold is that it is hard to do international clearing with gold, it is hard to transport and secure. It slows down money transfers between states and in credit between banks that don't trust each other. However the only better medium appears to be bitcoin and no one really trusts bitcoin

406 I have green tomatoes on my porch. Cherry. Not sure what to do with them. They took off too late in the season. I brought a bouquet of stems and flowers into the house. It may be the only benefit I get from the plants. I really enjoy the smell of tomato plants.

My ancestors were barbarians. My generation is probably the most civilized my family has been in centuries. I had to patiently explain to Pooky this evening that when you play Suleiman in Civ VI, you *cannot* go on the defensive, you have to build up your military and treasury from Turn 1 because the best time to stomp your enemies is in the Medieval Era. (Sadly, Civ VI does not include the lamentation of women as the victory soundtrack.)

450 My whole garden crapped out this year. Turned out the 20 yards of dirt I bought for the beds were garbage, more wood chips than dirt and about as nutritious as shale. Pissed me off too, I spent a lot of money for that dirt (kinda hard to return after the full sized dump truck has left and you discover it's crap). I spent a WHOLE FUCKING LOT of time and effort building my beds this past year and it mostly went for nothing. The strawberry bed did fine. Not a lot of strawberries, but the plants took over the bed and I'll get a crop next year. The raspberries and blackberries thrived, as did the grapes. They are up and over the trellis, although one seems to have a blight, I may lose it. The asparagus thrived. Third year starts so I should have edible shoots next year. Weird thing is that very few weeds grew in that bed. I mean, I've hardly had to weed it at all, all year long.

The sweet potatoes went nuts. Cautiously pulled up one plant last week and got two big tubers. Everything else....bupkis. 1/

452 Problem is, I don't particularly like sweet potatoes. Gingy and Little do, however, so it's good for them.

Everything else...crap. Tomatoes, peppers, corn, peas, green beans....crap. Cantaloupes..got a few good ones. Squash: dead. Zuccini: dead. Onions: nothing. Garlic: ditto. Lettuce? Don't make me laugh/cry. Carrots? Well, we got some and pickled them. Haven't opened the jars yet, it takes a bit of time.

I found a way to remediate the beds on a YouTube video, to enhance the nutrients in the soil, and it worked. I tried it on one bed, and planted tomatoes and peppers, and they're going great guns. Not sure if they'll come to fruition though. I planted late to test the soil fix, and winter may shut them down, even in Texas. 2/

454 Thing is, what I'd really like to get is mushroom compost. There's a mushroom plant near Madisonville that sells it, cheap as hell. 5 yards in your trailer for $20. I can rent a 5 yard dumping trailer for about $130, but my truck (which is 20 years old) isn't rated to tow the roughly 10K lbs that that load would be. And Madisonville is 120 miles away. Not a "Hey, let me borrow your truck for an hour or so" kinda deal. I could have pulled it off easily in Baltimore, but I don't have that kind of local contact down here yet.

So I'll use the Youtube method, even though it's much more cumbersome and expensive. I suppose I'll get it done eventually.

But damn y'all who post about your generous harvests I'm jealous.

"My whole garden crapped out this year. Turned out the 20 yards of dirt I bought for the beds were garbage"

"this year". What happened to last year's dirt? Did it get used up? Were you renting it, had to return it to the store? Did it evaporate, leaving just a big hole to be filled somehow?

And who buys dirt by the dump truck for gardening? Were you putting something in on top of a concrete patio in downtown NYC or something? Why would you do a thing like this and expect any kind of useful result from it? You need to know how stuff grows in the dirt in question before you can make any kind of plans around it. We started with basically pure clay. Added grass clippings, leaves, assorted vegetable discards from the kitchen, wood ash from the stove, everything went into the compost. Zero store-bought fertiilizer or much of anything else. Took a few years but it's highly productive with minimal effort now.

Those ethnic* Russians in the Donbas? Know how they got there? After Stalin starved out Ukraine, he imported a bunch of Russians to take over.
* Russian-speakers. Ethnically, there's not a lot of differences between "Russian" and "Ukrainian". Putin does have a point about how close they are, not that it makes a bit of difference to justify an invasion.
A little closer historically, remember that at the breakup of the USSR, the US AND Russia agreed to recognize and defend Ukraine if they would return all the nukes the Russians left there. That's worked out well, hasn't it?

This is tailored to Soufcarliner soils and stuff, but the basics are good. Your own states dirt experts will have similar for your own dirt.

Yeah no clue. There are a lot of farms around me, and they look like a frigging wasteland in winter, as if nothing would grow there. The soil looks dead, but damn if they don't grow amazing stuff in the summer. There is a little farmers stand about a mile from me. Always has fresh produce, really nice stuff too, and if nobody is there you just leave the money in a box and take what you want.

Rutgers. Still our favorite variety. At one time, Rutgers was the most popular commercial tomato. Times changed due to mechanization and nationwide nature of tomato distribution.

Rutgers with the help of Campbell's Soup Co, recreated the original Rutger's tomato. It's called Rutger's 250. You can get the seeds, and we are for next year.

491 "this year".

I went to raised beds, asshole. I had to fill them up somehow. I suppose I could have kept digging the soil below them to fill them, but then I would have up with beds 30' below ground. Like your IQ.

496 >> Sounds like a cabal. Big tomato? lol

It's getting late, and my brain ain't working so hot, but back in the day, Rutgers was developed in the '30s. It became the most popular commercial tomato, accounting for 60% of the market. This was back in the '40s and into the '50s, IIRC.

Back then, commercial vegetable production was more local. It fell out of favor with increasing mechanization and national distribution. The Rutgers variety had a very short shelf life after picking, and didn't stand up to mechanical handling very well.

Thus they began to breed commercial tomatoes for longer shelf life and tolerance to rough mechanical handling. Taste suffered. This is why store bought tomatoes just don't taste as good as home grown.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at October 14, 2022 03:30 AM (Mzdiz)

Anyway, Rutger's U. as some celebration of their 250th anniversary, started some project to recreate that original Rutger's variety. Campell's Soup, which was involved in the original development, helped out -- they still had records and samples of the original breeding stock and stuff.

They succeeded, and called the variety Rutger's 250.

I looked that up. Complicated. Refrigerated properly, it can be 2 weeks, with some up to 20 days. Temperature is critical. If you get them too cold, it will fuck them up.

The optimum temperature for ripe tomatoes is 44 - 50F. That's higher than fridge temperature.

505 Tomato shelf life? Who knows... sometimes they last for a week on the counter, other times shrivel within 2 days. (yes, I'm stuck with 'store bought' after my plants failed)

I had this one tomato, was a bit pink when I bought it, so left it out for maybe 3 or 4 days before using.

Got the bacon cooked, was ready to make sammiches...sliced that 'mater open and saw that its seeds were sprouting inside it! Ugh.

512 My mother always canned tomatoes. I guess they are fairly easy to can without a pressure cooker? She just boiled the mason jars in water after sealing the bottles. Probably a forgotten art now that we mostly all have super duper markets that do it all. Until the end of time comes when the Start Trek ordering of food comes along. It just pops out of the door, like electrify comes just from the outlet in the room, so no worry about why and how.
