Biden: Look Fat, the Recession That We're Totally Not In Right Now Will be a "Slight Recession"
Another Inflation Gauge Shows Accelerating Inflation; Wages Fall

Inflation plus falling wages and flatlining economic activity -- hm, what did we used to call that?

Stagflation, was it?

The Producer Price Index, the report of what producers receive for their goods, hit a new record level.

This measure is slightly different than the Consumer Price Index, which measures what consumers pay for goods, but it's two different samplings attempting to measure the same thing, prices of consumer goods. It's like the difference between estimating average American salaries by surveying workers themselves, versus surveying employers for what they're paying workers. Due to incomplete information and differences in who gets surveyed, these reports will sometimes disagree with each other, somewhat.

The PPI just posted a record.

Headline PPI inflation showed prices increasing 0.4 percent in September, double the 0.2 percent economists predicted for a 12-month increase of 8.5 percent, a rate that also surpassed Wall Street estimates.

Expectedly is the new unexpectedly.

What's more, the month-over-month number shows that cost increases are accelerating for producers, with final demand services advancing 0.4 percent in September after increasing 0.3 percent in August.

The Consumer Price Index also rose 0.4% in September -- also, get this, exceeding Very Smart (Left-Leaning) Wall Streeters' expectations.

The consumer price index increased 0.4% for the month, more than the 0.3% Dow Jones estimate, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. On a 12-month basis, so-called headline inflation was up 8.2%, off its peak around 9% in June but still hovering near the highest levels since the early 1980s.

Although gas prices dropped 4.9% -- due to the fact that we're in a recession, and therefore there is less of a demand for fuel -- there was such a huge increase in the prices of other goods that the Core CPI was actually higher, at 0.6%.

Excluding volatile food and energy prices, core CPI was even higher for the month, accelerating 0.6% against the Dow Jones estimate for a 0.4% increase. Core inflation was up 6.6% from a year ago, the biggest 12-month gain since August 1982.

Food prices were way up again:

Another large jump in food prices boosted the headline number. The food index rose 0.8% for the month, the same as August, and was up 11.2% from a year ago.

Oh, and energy prices are moving up again, of course.

Analysts quoted in that story note that the Fed will probably continue hiking the interest rate by 0.75% increments until inflation stops "exceeding analyst expectations." I wonder why the goal is to get it to stop exceeding analyst expectations, rather than just... stopping. I genuinely don't know and the article doesn't say.

"The Federal Reserve has made it very clear they're committed to price stability, they're committed to reducing the inflationary pressures," said Michelle Meyer, chief U.S. economist at the Mastercard Economics Institute. "The more inflation comes in above expectations, the more they’re going to have to prove that commitment, which means higher interest rates and cooling in the underlying economy."

Do they mean above the usual expectations in the 2-3% inflation target range?

Not only did prices rise, but wages shrunk. Again.

The rising costs meant more bad news for workers, whose average hourly earnings declined 0.1% for the month on an inflation-adjusted basis and are off 3% from a year ago, according to a separate BLS release.

Expect a welter of Propaganda Media articles about how living with less affords us all an opportunity to Look Inside and Close to Home for meaning and purpose. Do we really need to live such materialistic lives?!, the extraordinarily shallow, materialistic, self-obsessed, and status-seeking media will scold us.

Not a bad sentiment, but... weird how we only see these Silver Linings articles with Democrat Disaster "Presidents."

Feast your eyes on these eye-watering price increases, via Ed Morrissey:

yan Struyk

Annual inflation via BLS just out:

42.9% airline fares
33.1% utility gas
30.5% eggs

8.2% all items
8.2% fruit
8.1% ham
7.6% women apparel
7.2% used cars
6.7% rent
3.7% men apparel

Via Hot Air, this collection of horrified reactions by Wall Streeters to the news-- with a special emphasis on how bad they feel for their beloved Democrat Party.

Andrew Brenner, head of international fixed-income at NatAlliance Securities.

"Horrible CPI number... what will the Fed to do on interest rates: Will they go 100 basis?"

That is, a full 1.0% interest rate hike, instead of the 0.75% hikes they've been doing, to avoid the Scare Factor of a 1.0% hike.

Jim Caron. Morgan Stanley Investment Management.

"It is brutal... I do think that prices will start to moderate -- I thought that this would already be happening at this point," he tells Bloomberg TV. The issue now is that inflation has moved from the goods sector and has permeated into the services sector."

Chris Antsey, Bloomberg senior editor

"For Democrats, this is a disaster. Today's is the final CPI report ahead of the Nov. 8 midterm election. You can bet that Republicans will be hitting this hard -- worst inflation in four decades."

Republicans, Pounce!

Dennis DeBusschere, founder of 22V Research,

"This was clearly a bad number. It's just broad-based inflation. Is what it is.... Need much more goods disinflation to offset the high sticky parts of core."

Goods disinflation is, I gather from context, puncturing the inflation balloon by offsetting the inflation due to having too many bills floating around by creating more goods to match up with those bills.

Like, for example, opening up the oil spigots and tapping the billions of dollars worth of petroleum beneath the US?

Nah. Too simple. Also, Greta Thunberg would be cross with us.

Seth Carpenter, chief global economist at Morgan Stanley,

"That this was clearly a shock for markets. If ever there's a time for people who do economic forecasting to be humbled, this is it."

Actually that time was back in 2006 but you do you.

No wonder Biden's threatening the Saudis.

It's all coming apart now.

43 Employment is down too, that was the only single positive economic indicator the Biden administration had, so they pointed to it constantly.

I remember the Carter years. I remember the alternate days to fill your car based on the last number in your license plate. I remember the food lines. I remember walking down every business street in town just trying to get someone to give me an application to TRY to get a job. I remember double digit inflation.

This all feels really damned familiar. But its even worse this time around because there's no massive American work ethic momentum, no business freedom, and the president keeps doing worse and worse things to compound the effect.

And unlike the great depression, there isn't a family farm to go back home to. There isn't a backup plan. This time its going to be worse, much worse. I fear we are the precipice of a far, far worse collapse, globally.

Joe has practiced apathy his entire career. He doesn't have to believe it. He just does not care at all whether what he says is true or not.

Conservatives have a hope of their words trying to represent reality. Words from Dems only seem to represent a perception they want to push for power. (Thus fulfilling Foucault, because they have lowered their ceilings due to Foucault's pessimism).

83 Generally speaking the president gets unfair credit or blame for the economy, because if they are doing their job right and constitutionally, they have pretty limited impact on how the economy goes. So people get elected for great economies they had little to no impact on (see Clinton), or thrown out of office for a terrible economy they didn't cause (see Hoover).

But this time? President Biden is specifically and deliberately doing things that are extremely harmful to the economy in a really obvious way. I mean even Keynes is rolling over in his grave at what is being done here.

Most of my working life, my goal has been to put aside enough money to be able to retire just a bit early. Since I got married a while ago, the wife and I have invested almost 50% of our income.

We drive cars for 10+ years. We use electronics until they die. No expensive vacations.

We finally reached the goal I had set. She retired and I was set to do so in a few years. A few years before I was eligible to take social security (even the lowest version of it).

In the last 2 months I've watched 10% of my net worth go poof. Sometimes I feel like a stupid ass for trying to have something.

Posted by: rd at October 13, 2022 05:17 PM (Z32m1)

Recessions are caused by the collapse of business cycles.
Business cycles are caused by the central banks making credit and cash more available in the economy than would otherwise be available if borrowers only had to work with the money already present and circulating. The extra money causes malinvestment because the easy money hides the actual needs and wants of the market economy. The collapse comes when the money supply is no longer expanding fast enough to sustain the boom or when the multiple malinvestments poison the entire system and prevent needed activity from happening (everyone is buying beanie babies instead of raising pigs for bacon, say)

Depressions happen when the government and its central bank intervene to prevent a recession and keep at it because they think by one quick trick, once they hit on it, they can change reality and make everyone wealthy again.

155 This whole man-made stagflation/energy issue is a depopulation move writ large.

Who gets killed the most in this - working class families.

They have 1 income to pay for more than 1 person...in fact, they normally have at least 3, and possibly 6-7-8 people they pay for with one income.

It takes a couple quarters for whatever momentum has been built up to be affected, negatively at least. Increasing costs on businesses, reducing efficiency of distribution and transportation, reducing the value of the dollar, etc. That takes a while to hit.

So even if by some miracle that economically sane people take over congress and turn around policy, ramming it past Biden's veto pen, we won't really see things turn around for a while.

Having someone super business friendly take office over a caustic destructive force like Obama had an immediate effect for Trump but still took months to really turn around the economic numbers.

What the hell can the Republicans do even if they capture both the House and the Senate? They can hold hearings (which will be twisted by the media to make the GOP look crazy no matter what they say) They can't pass legislation unless Biden signs it (which he won't do if it's a GOP-led bill). About the best thing they can do is block more bad laws from passing. But the damage on that front is already done.

The red hot housing market here in my rural NE Texas area has pretty much collapsed. Six months ago if you listed a house there was a cash bidding war on it and it was sold within a few days of listing. Our neighbors bought an older house for $90,000 five years ago and sold it for $199,000 cash four months ago. Now houses are sitting there for months without an offer and people are pulling them off the market.

I am hoping my assessment drops dramatically next April.

back in the day, a state would get land grants at 'birth' to help fund the government and both would cash in selling lands to citizens aside from things required to operate the nation - the odd fort or military camp here or there. So pretty soon aside from some parks neither government had a lot of land.

Somewhere around 1900 that went out of fashion at least for the feds and huge tracts of the west are just held for no reason. These should be sold off, especially in places where the land would be valuable.

Recovery from Carter required continued pain until Reagan's policies could repair damage and develop. There was a lot of hostility toward Reagan in his early term... until "magic" happened. What we experienced first was pain, but there was at least hope sprinkled in.

So my main concern is that we have similar/worse pain post-Biden Cabal but the loss of hope because the WEF and Uniparty apparatus is so much more powerful and all-encompassing now. We kind of need a world economic collapse of sufficient magnitude to fracture the current power bases in multiple countries.

Inflation is solved by stopping the pumping of the money supply, and the people who own the money tree don't like the prospect of not being rich.

The other solution is to reduce the regulatory burden, and the people who enforce the regulations like having the whip hand, and won't give it up without a struggle.

340 The actual move of the U-Boxes was okay. Dealing with U-haul, not so much. I was on the phone with them again today. First, they put someone else's u-box on my account. They had to look at the security cam footage before they believed me. I added a third u-box and all made it to the same location. Had someone pick them up, bring them here, unload and return.

But they didn't close my contract. One of the boxes went to CT and I was charged a storage fee. It's taken a week to get it sorted out and I withhold judgment until I see my money back in my account. If you aren't sure how much stuff you need to move, it is likely the easiest way to do it as you can add more boxes as needed. Pods didn't come out to this part of the country and U-Pack would have been delivered a lot farther out. And the U-boxes can be stored, as the charges show.

The Feds generally claimed to land on annexation, and in the west had a process of donation land claims. Unclaimed lands, forests and the like could be claimed for mineral rights, some were granted to railroads (the crater of Mt. St. Helens may still belong to the Pacific-Norther RR) and a lot were sold to the timber companies.
The timber companies had a bad habit of letting cut over land be taken back for taxes, so the feds just kept them and started selling off timber rights while keeping the land "in trust"
Then they started turning them into wilderness areas and keeping everyone out because of Bambi and other meaningful works of ecological research.

It is long and complicated and everyone thought they were getting free lunches

Its interesting to note that all the BIG Forest fires? All Colorado and further West. Why? East coast is NOT Fed land... and it seems the BIG fires are all on Fed Land.

Its almost like if someone actually owns land, they take care of it...

386 Has anyone looked into the Chinese Communist realty bubble and their banking wobbles lately?
Posted by: rd at October 13, 2022 06:08 PM (Z32m1)

There are a few YT channels that watch china. Serpentza and Laowy86 are good, lived there for years and have families but had to flee China a few years back.

Demographic collapse is going to hit Europe (especially So Europe) and China badly and soon. Russia and East Europe seem to be trying to recover by subsidizing large families, and rejecting western ideas that contribute to it.

388 I am trying to unpack it all. I didn't move a lot of furniture and I need bookcases. The big problem out here is that you can't find anyone to hire for stuff. I need someone to haul some stuff to the dump and someone to fix my central heat. It's proving elusive.

I will say that so far, I haven't found anything that was broken. You want any of these self pack boxes to be crammed full so that nothing shifts around. That's why the smaller u-box worked better for me. I just wish they had smarter people running the local stores. Everyone I talked to at their customer service has been good, very helpful and friendly. And I'm happy I bought this place. I like the town and my neighbors. I like my old, slightly run down house that is as old as me. I gotta figure out how to put in a garden next year.

Especially when the negligent owner buys into counterproductive "green" strategies that are the reverse of what real ecology says is the right way to manage land.

Many biomes need fires every so often to be healthy.

395 > Utah is somewhere crazy around 70% last I checked.

If you count only federal ownership, Nevada is the highest, with 80.89%.

If you count both federal and state ownership, Alaska is the highest, with 89.22% being publicly owned.

Posted by: Pug Mahon, Waiting for Something, Anything at October 13, 2022 06:16 PM (xPJvm)

400 Here's the thing - to kill of this type of inflation last time it came around, the fed had to increase interest rates to around...16%. That was with inflation at 13%.

We are currently at 3.15% interest rate, and inflation at around 9%. That means interest needs to go to around 11-12% to choke this shit off. That will cause a massive recession that will last 2-3 years.

The dems know this and will put off this reckoning as long as humanly possible. But once inflation is unleashed, it is really hard to stop. The only other tools : They could cut spending substantially (fat chance), or they could drill like crazy to increase energy supplies and reduce that source of inflation (fat chance). So, with Biden in the white house, we'll see a 2 year slow ratcheting up of rates to 11-12%. Inflation, during all that time will keep coming.

Next 2-3 years are going to be a nightmare. We are all about to get a lot poorer.

402 West Virginia was formed from an illegal vote in 1861 that was blatantly unconstitutional but nobody said a word and lincoln turned a blind eye to the "new" state and welcomed them into the Union.
Posted by: Mister Scott (Formerly GWS) at October 13, 2022 06:09 PM (bVYXr)

considering the way the state of Virginia had gerrymandered the state to exclude the interior from being able to get a majority despite having some 60 pct of the voters AND that they were in armed rebellion, I think they were wise to just extract them into a new state.

Same should be done for upstate NY, downstate IL, and most of CA.

403 Just found out an interesting thing.... seems that because of the way they count the unemployment numbers... Illegals are not counted at all.

So... that 2 to 3 million illegals that just came in? Don't count... nor do the ones who have been here for years.

What they really need to do is cut the size of government and the dole. Each person fired would become at least of some economic use instead of a parasite on the economic activity we have. No pensions, this is an emergency.

I'd scrap the Forest Service and the BLM - give the land to the states to sell or lease as they see fit. I live in a state where a LOT of the country gets a say in how we use our land, and we're pretty sick of it.

407 Now that I have managed to live long enough to be 29, I can say I have never seen another executive administration as hostile and detrimental to the American public as the current one. Saying it is a failed administration doesn't do it justice. It is a complete and total disaster which is accelerating in the carnage it is causing to the nation. I am not an economist so I might hold some deplorable ideas about the state of the economy, but I hold we are at the beginning of a recession that is going to be deep, hard and long whose effects while not erased until years after FJB is long out of office. I am even beginning to think we will be lucky to get out of this with nothing worse than a mild economic depression. A few more fuckups by FJB and we just might get to party like it's the 1930s all over again. I thought I would never say this, but I would trade Jimmy Carter for FJB in nano second.

414 You missed something important, Ace, in the difference between PPI and CPI: PPI includes products that the consumer doesn't buy directly.

So PPI counts the guy who makes car engines, windshields, doors, axles, the assembly machines on the factory floor, and the computers that run them
CPI just counts the price of the car.

The PPI usually precedes the CPI - up or down.
