31 She lived in the Soviet Union from 1937-38 with her third husband, Ambassador Joseph E. Davies (as documented in the biographical film Mission to Moscow), and it was during this stay that she fell in love with Russian art; she acquired many icons, textiles and various other works of art directly from the Soviet government. Merriweather Post continued to add to her opulent Russian collection throughout her lifetime, and today her Washington D.C. estate, Hillwood, operates as a museum of Russian and French art.

34 The family had an opportunity to visit Genoa a couple years ago. Just wandering around and we came across Christopher Columbus's boyhood home -- a very unassuming little apartment in a bustling part of the city. That a kid raised there would think of exploring the uncharted seas in a couple little boats is unfathomable. Good on ya, Chris.

In 1542, Cabrillo became the first European to explore the west coast of today's United States. He found many once inhabited tribal villages that had been abandoned. Just when exploring inland US (Southwest) it was clear many tribes had died off or abandoned their lands.

48 I've seen a few of Aivazovsky's paintings. He does a great job with sun and moon shining through cloud or mist. His seascapes catch the many shades of blue, green, and foam of the water. I also like the detail he includes in the ships and individuals. The colors always seem appropriate to the scene and mood.

I really liked Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel when I first read it. He's right in that non-Euro populations didn't have access to certain crops and useful animals. What he leaves out is that (a) Europeans would probably have found a way to dominate the Earth even without cattle and the like; and (b) even when Africans, Indians, and Orientals had access to higher technology, they did nothing with it.

Example: The Chinese had gunpowder before Europe did. They created fireworks instead of cannon.

111 From watching the most shown ads for Fetterman (US Senate in Pennsylvania), we are treated to two claims that I find to be .. without evidence …

1) Oz is the key to a nation-wide ban on abortion

2) Oz is on-board with a plan that ends Social Security in 5 years.

I’m willing to be convinced these are true or false, but I have seen nothing to make me believe they are true

There has been the Graham proposal for a 15-week limit, which is hardly a nation-wide ban.
Social Security is on track to exhaust the Trust Fund in 2036, when benefits will revert to whatever revenues can support. Neither party has done anything to push out the date.

The thing that's always been interesting to me was that the Black Death was so much worse in Britain (because relatively cramped island) that, even though it was devastating on the continent, it forced permanent social changes there that wouldn't occur elsewhere in Europe until later (often centuries later, depending on locale).

Not to cheer for plagues, but for the British, that one really wiped the slate clean and set them up for their future runaway successes, long ahead of their Continental cousins.

A lot of the ocean water was locked up in ice sheets, thus lowering the sea level and exposing the land between Asia and Alaska. No doubt some of those sheets came down pretty far. Probably it was no summertime stroll across the "land bridge" for them, it was probably cold and forbidding, but so was the land mass they'd come from. They were just moving bit by bit farther east in search of new land and new game. When they got across, there was a generally unfrozen passage between glaciers that allowed them to work their way farther south.

They had plenty of time. In a few centuries, hey, they were in New Mexico-to-be, and in a few more, "So this is what they're going to call Tierra del Fuego?"

275 Workers at Nantucket’s airport on Friday alerted police to a flight that is scheduled to arrive Tuesday because it bore “many similarities” to the plane that brought dozens of migrants to the neighboring Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard last month, police said in a press release.

Throughout history, people have hated actors. There are many interesting examples from Roman times, through European history, and beyond, of this phenomenon.

As early as a hundred years ago, many CA hotels and boarding houses had signs expressly forbidding actors from staying there.

A healthy society shuns and degrades those people as the freaks and misfits they are, instead of putting them on a pedestal.

284 The thing that's always been interesting to me was that the Black Death was so much worse in Britain (because relatively cramped island) that, even though it was devastating on the continent, it forced permanent social changes there that wouldn't occur elsewhere in Europe until later (often centuries later, depending on locale).

Not to cheer for plagues, but for the British, that one really wiped the slate clean and set them up for their future runaway successes, long ahead of their Continental cousins.

293 Re KS and OK, on polling, first you determine whether or not the polls are using registered voters for a screen. At this stage, those are junk because while they are cheaper and easier to do, the error rate regarding final results is quite high. Second, tell me what are the ballots like--do they allow mail in, when does early voting start, how many days, and so on. Third, tell me about money--candidates running against the tides like Democrats this cycle need more money to turn out their voters--not tv ads but GOTV. Ditto for Republicans so things like volunteers versus paid staff make a difference. Next, tell me about the economy in a state and any changes in them. Last, it is unknown how the Dobbs decision will play in Nov. My guess is that the people most concerned about abortion vote regularly. Most other people are ambivalent about it so it probably is a factor but not the factor. The biggest group that it will particularly affect on voting behavior are 18-25 year old single females that seek college educations.

The functional collapse of serfdom was the big, wide-ranging one. The Plague seems to have hit young people the hardest, and the full on 50% population reduction in Britain meant that there were basically no young men left to till the ground.

Labor became exceedingly valuable in the ensuing few generations, and it meant the development of a modern economy became necessary. Within a couple of centuries after, the Enclosure Acts began, paid labor and property ownership became the norm rather than the exception long before this development took place elsewhere.

It's not as if the Plague was responsible for these developments - they are natural developments - but it accelerated them and gave the Brits a big advantage compared to, say, France which held on to the system until it exploded all over the place.

I believe he's referring to the way the plague ended serfdom in England long before it ended in Europe. There simply were not enough laborers to go around after the plague, and even though the nobility passed laws trying to force the peasants to stay on their land, it became very easy for them to take off and go where someone would pay them for more than they had gotten before. England had no options to bring in new cheap labor, so this transformed their society, and led to the rise of a shopkeeping middle class.

349 Saltwater itself has a freezing point of -30°F.

Posted by: t-bird at October 10, 2022 10:50 AM (yZlY6)

Yeah...about that.

It's more like 28 degrees F.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at October 10, 2022 10:55 AM (XIJ/X)

The freezing point of saltwater? That depends on how much salt is in the water. IIRC, water with 5% salt starts freezing at around 0 to -5 f.

The more salt you add, the colder the water needs to be to freeze.

350 Happy Indigenous Peoples Day to all of my fellow natives. As a card carrying member of the Chickasaw Nation, I’m going to go outside and do a little dance, make a little love and get down tonight just like an real American.

Woke up this am to reports of disgusting Russian missile strikes in Kyiv, Lviv & other cities.Heading to the border now to assess the situation. This Russian attempt to frighten civilians & the effect on children (who are learning online today) is why this [Ukraine] trip is so important

While I didn't know that the teachers unions were part of the general-purpose Ukrainian laundromat operations, nor that they were players in the overall locus of Western corruption that Ukraine is, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

There's this weird thing where Zelensky has celebrities walk with him through Kiev on live TV to prove that the war is bad or something.

Crowder dug up footage of Zelensky's stand-up act from 10 years ago - the centerpiece was him and another guy hitting piano keys with their boners. For real. No wonder Obama thought he was top-tier leadership material.

Oh, man, you're right. I went to back to the blurb I used. It said -1.8°C - correctly and which I promptly ignored- and -28.8°F. Big, unforced error on my part.

359 It is interesting looking up the Indigenous Peoples each U. S. state.

There's also lots of 'Columbus Day debates' on local radio, for example: Then why wasn't Manhattan be returned to indigenous people? Why isn't the history of anti-Italian American discrimination, including the lynching of 11 men in New Orleans in 1891, taught? Why is F.D.R honored when hundreds & hundreds of Jews, who arrived by ship seeking sanctuary the U.S., were returned to Europe?
