Scientists will respond to these new demands with boilerplate to the effect that they will make every effort to seek graduate and postdoctoral students from minority communities and encourage new outreach programs. This is lip service at best; it doesn’t address true societal issues of inequity. People qualified to work in these esoteric areas have all gone to good graduate schools and carried out credible research projects. They may be minorities, but they haven’t been marginalized. They are thus not appropriate targets for what should be useful societal diversity initiatives. The extensive DEI bureaucracy at universities has already worked for decades to ensure that no STEM job announcements or hiring can be done without constant supervision to ensure that women and minorities are recruited. But given the strong wording of the new guidelines, existing programs may not be enough. This is worrisome, as university DEI boards have shown a willingness to torpedo job applications whose DEI component is insufficiently extensive or effusive. The new Energy Department review committees probably won’t behave differently.Aside from the disgusting and pure racism/sexism inherent in these plans is the unbelievable waste of time, money, and energy! Instead of doing...you know...actual work, tens or hundreds of thousands of people across America are directing their attention toward these issues. Deans and inclusion officers are hired, meetings are held, policies are written, hiring practices are examined and reexamined for the smallest deviation from the current political tone. All of this in service to a goal that will end in the decrease in quality of whatever the organization was created to do. There are several organizations in America that have carefully bucked this tide. Direct your attention to our professional sports organizations, whose hiring practices are ruthless when it comes to their players. How many trannies are pitching in MLB? How many woman defensive backs play in the NFL? Any Hispanic non-binary defensemen in the NHL? Yeah...math isn't just a good idea; it's the law. [Hat Tip: Jay Guevara]

And some people even acknowledge it, even though they shouldn't. At one of our quarterly "all hands" meetings, the GM of my division said it point blank. He said (and this is close to a direct quote), "It is no longer about getting the best person for the position, it's about getting the best person for the position who also contributes to our diversity" when discussing hiring.
If shareholders in my company mattered (we don't, not just controlling but dominant controlling interest is held by the chairman and his buddies), I'd have been sorely tempted to launch a shareholder suit after hearing that.

We were getting their oil at a pittance before because they were a weak and newly established country. Extracting the majority of a country's natural resource wealth for very little isn't really a stable relationship or one we'd expect to last.

And that is just a rigged, tamped down number of course, like all of it. That's what's being seen in the grocery stores. At least 13% inflation.

I watched a video yesterday that follows the VR market. They said there has been a sudden, and very dramatic change in Meta's attitude. Instead of buying little companies and squashing any potential competition, they're suddenly very interested in partnering. Instead of having a closed VR shop, with their own code and hardware, they're suddenly interested in open sourcing things.

It's pretty well established in gaming. Not so much the "live in your pod and hang out in the Metaverse" sense, though. The only way to change that - if it's possible at all, which I doubt - is to be truly immersive to the point that you can discern little to no difference, or make it so enjoyable that you don't care that it's fake.

The Saudis would be entitled the personal owernship portion, state portion, and federal portion given the structure of things. Then there'd be other taxes that weren't being applied. Your numbers for the aggregate are pretty far off.

But with a lot quite a few VR games you aren't sitting. Because they actually require you to stand to have a range of motion of your body so you can turn around, duck, etc. You can't turn around while sitting on your couch. So you're likely needing to stand.

I think you're referring to pancake lenses.
You might also be referring to foveated rendering, in which only a small portion of the screen is rendered in high res, while the rest is much lower. This enables games to run with much lower processing power, most likely on a standalone headset (no cable back to a PC). It requires eye-tracking so that the computer knows where you're looking.

Well, I guess it depends on what type of games you're playing. Most of what I do doesn't really qualify as a game, so much as an experience.

Yeah, and I bet a lot of those are really interesting and even fun. And that can be a place that VR fills in. Just like the type of game I describe can also get filled by VR, due to it being a much more immersive experience by having you moving your body. But I'd still say that these make it niche, and complementary to standard gaming, not a replacement for it like some seem to fantasize it becoming. You're not buying the PS5 to just play PSVR2 enabled games.

It's motion without forward movement. The forward movement of coasters and racing cars mitigates the mental disruption of the rocking back and forth. At least for me it does.
