Interesting we are talking about old technology, heat especially, as Europe faces a long, cold winter without power.
My family cabin on Vashon Island had a fireplace with a cast iron insert downstairs and a pot bellied iron stove upstairs. Both had a teapot filled with water to keep it from getting too dry. Downstairs had enough space to put a couple pans on it for cooking. Power was especially sketchy when a storm would blow through and knock down power lines. We typically lost power 5-6 times a season sometimes for days at a time. Never skipped a beat. Grandpa would scavenge wood from the beach, and occasionally find a big log that had escaped a boom towed by a tugboat to a mill. That would last an entire season! Prices are about 3x what the box still has for recommended price so I decided he if he wants that junk food he can pay for it himself. Maybe they had some shipping built into their prices but it was crazy.

I liked my radiant heat in my last home. I like the lack of murders on my block more though.
Get a nice penetrating oil, spray it on when the radiator is cold and then let it heat up, I've had luck with the heat drawing the oil down into the threads. If you are not in a hurry... just hit all your radiators once a day for a while. Then get a good wrench, something tight so you will know if it's turning and not stripping, try to loosen it, if you don't like how it feels give it a quarter turn tight. Then try to back it off. If you are still worried about it, add more oil and tray again later. Don't need to hurry. Posted by: Inogame at October 09, 2022 02:25 PM (D/9Qo) 41

Florida Surgeon General used a Israeli study Posted by: Skip ******* Actually I was looking at this earlier today. The source was Florida health department death certificates that included ICD10 codes I30 thru I50, which include myocarditis, pericarditis, dysrhythmias, sudden death, cardiomyopathy and a bunch of other conditions. Not necessarily autopsy confirmed. To see if there was a time link to vaccine, they compared a 4 week post vaccine period to a subsequent 21 week window, to see if there was an increase above background levels during the 4-week window. Long story short, there was a statistically significant elevation in risk for males in 18-39 y/o age range. 20 cases with one of those codes occurred in the first four weeks compared to 52 in the subsequent 21 weeks. The 4-wk risk was 1.84 times the baseline rate, with a quite wide 95% confidence interval. (i.e.relative risk might turn out to be substantially lower or higher) By comparison in the males >60 y/o there were over 4000 cases with those codes. The small numbers in the younger group are more likely to magnify apparent differences. Not a confirmed causal link. Statistically suggestive. Is your house actually steam heat, i.e. boiler under considerable pressure, or is it hot water (boiler at essentially atmospheric pressure)?
I just did a sort of similar plumbing job on the old Flx motor coach. I broke a tee off the bottom of the engine, containing a drain valve and a nipple for a circulating block heater. Backed over a spruce tree, I did. The spruce was broken off, too. I found a screw extractor that just fit the 3/8" pipe nipple, tapped it in with a hammer, and put a wrench to it. The broken-off stub of the nipple backed right out, as nicely as you please. All fixed, now. Got 8 liters of antifreeze, and 8 of water in the rad now, and more is indicated. Definitely won't hurt the engine to get fresh anti-corrosion additives, either. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 09, 2022 02:32 PM (+n6ha) 54

The logs, as they were loaded into booms, were branded by being struck with big hammers on the end grain. That left an impression, and the hammers were also inked. It was illegal to possess a branded log if you were not the lawful owner of the brand, or a contractor. There was also no scarcity of unbranded logs for firewood. the problem, as I understand it, is there are few autopsies being done at the level of determining damage by the vaccine.
It is true there is no direct evidence for vaccine injuries causing this apparent excess death statistic claimed by reviews of vital statistics and reports by insurance companies that document the payouts they make, and it is probably true that the only actual data we have to go by is the types of death listed by the various MDs and coronors' offices, the VAERS and the military version of the VAERS, but it could also be true that it is very difficult to find direct evidence if no one is looking for it. I love my steam heat. Best is no moving parts. Posted by: Jamaica Queens at October 09, 2022 02:50 PM Steam heat is hydrating the air. Moist air feels warmer then dry air. I recently replaced a room size fan-forced heater with an oil filled radiator. Exact same btu capability, but the difference in comfort is noticeable. There is no 'wind chill factor' as no fan. There is almost no noise. As the air remains moist, there is no static charge in the carpet. Yes, a few bucks more, but worth it. Posted by: Divide by Zero at October 09, 2022 02:57 PM (y3pKJ) 96

Born in Oklahoma in the middle of the last century (hint: 29 years ago). When we finally got modern, we had central heat (gas) and a/c.
Never even saw a radiator in the flesh until my Chicago-born lady and I visited up there. We later moved there for fourteen winters. Our building had steam radiators. On those merciless Chicago winter nights, the hissing of the radiators, even the occasional banging, meant comfort. (Steam radiators were the modernization there; the basement still had a room that clearly had been the coal dump in the past.) Escaped back to Oklahoma almost three decades ago. The roar of central heat kicking on may not bring quite the same feeling of comfort, but I don't miss futzing with boilers and radiators. And winters are much milder. Our system is pretty tight, very dry in the house. My wife cooking all day steams the place up. We use one 20" box fan in front of a 3' radiator to even out the heat.

Steam heat is hydrating the air.
I don't even know how to tell you this, but if your steam heat is hydrating anything, you're in trouble. Hydronic systems with expansion tanks were notorious for picking up a bubble in a fitting that could stay there for years. My hot-water radiators all had a bleed cap. When we did away with the expansion tank, we installed this little "whizzer" just upstream of the (return-side) pump that sizzled a few times, and has now been quiet for years. I open all the circuits all the way for an hour or so at the start of the season, then set the proportioning valves and don't have to worry about air any more. Steam heat is hydrating the air. .... I don't even know how to tell you this, but if your steam heat is hydrating anything, you're in trouble. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at October 09, 2022 03:26 PM Yes, to be more accurate, a 'tight' steam heat system does not hydrate the air. It just warms the air up, moist or dry. Forced air systems, space-heaters, etc. do take the water out of the air, leaving it less comfortable at low temps (not too mention the 'wind chill factor'). I have a hydroponic system (occasionally) heated with home heating oil. It is the absolute best, but uses a shitload of energy. I'm a little uncertain about the 'science' behind running all the baseboards on the outside walls. It seems to be a system designed by people who sell home heating oil. Typically 48-72 hours for routine underway/deployment. Emergency sortee 4-6 hours, with no guarantee that you wouldn't blow flexes or worse. Personal best was six hours on 9-12-2001 after putting the plant back together overnight to get out of Geata harbor and get under an air defense umbrella. Those oil filled radiators are nice. I bought two for the old house, when the last wall heater died. They used less electricity than the 220 wall heaters. The cat likes to sleep next to them. I would like to get the central heat going, as I suspect natural gas heat will be nice.

Since Jay is here: could you flush a water system with dilute nitric acid to get rid of the scale, say in your water heater? Dilute it down to 5 or 10 percent. I understand that nitrate salts of pretty much all common cations are readily soluble.
I expect one would have to neutralize with a mild base, and then flush several times with plain water. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 09, 2022 03:58 PM (+n6ha) 176
Speaking of disgust, we watched the Crimson Tide game yesterday, and noticed how so many of the food-related commercials - which were in abundance - portrayed what looked and sounded like utterly disgusting concoctions. Anyone else have that reaction?

Re vaccines and sequelae, what time frame would you expect for, e.g., myocarditis to appear?
******* My assumption would be based on a model of typical viral myocarditis, such as coxsackie virus, in which the virus enters the body, viral particles invade myocytes, multiply, then enter the blood stream (viremia) and the resulting immune system response causes the inflammatory damage to the myocytes. That time course is perhaps 1 to 3 weeks give or takee. In the case of the mRNA vaccine, the production of spike protein is probably faster, so inflammatory changes might show up sooner perhaps as early as one week. The duration of inflammation varies. And as with viral myocarditis, it's a little bit like the tip of the iceberg, as folks with subclinical cardiac involvement may be many times more than those that are clinically diagnosed. At what point does cardiac inflammation become "significant"? If a tree falls in the forest It is also complicated by potential priming of the immune system by vaccine, with a later virus exposure triggering activation perhaps months later. Vax => COVID => myocarditis. Posted by: Muldoon at October 09, 2022 04:02 PM (cPDW+) 186
I'm waiting to see if anyone shows up to work on my central heat this week. They said they might. I am tempted to get stove pipe and set up my tent heater in the laundry room. But then I'd need to find firewood.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 09, 2022 03:58 PM (+n6ha) _____________ You're right, nitrate salts are almost all soluble, but ... I'd be leery of putting nitric acid onto anything I'd want to keep. The course you're proposing could well work, but whether you just created another problem would depend critically on the nitric acid concentration. For my part, I wouldn't do this, because I have no idea what concentration of nitric acid would be low enough not to cause problems. Water softeners work by complexing calcium cations on an ion-exchange resin. The sodium in the salt is used in the recycle to replace the calcium with sodium ions. The calcium chloride is then flushed out of the system. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at October 09, 2022 04:17 PM (k63Z3) 194

Posted by: Muldoon at October 09, 2022 04:02 PM (cPDW+) _____________ Thanks! I was suspected of having had a heart attack last year, five months after the vaccine, but after extended testing (incl. cardioangiography and echocardiography) my cardiologist said my ticker was fine (no blockages, or elevation of troponin levels, but ... elevated D-dimer levels, suggestive of a dissolved clot, I understand). My cardiologist thinks I had COVID, and pooh-poohs my testing negative for it. I'm still gradually recovering, but we're still trying to figure what the hell happened that put me in bed for a month (and included overnight stints for observation in the ER). Boiler supply shops used to stock solutions to put into the circuit and dissolve scale. Probably not for first-timers, and the shit that comes out is an awful mess. Lots of rump-engineers will tell you that no closed system should ever have tap water in it. Real steam systems distill their water first; I've known hot-water systems that ran antifreeze mixes just to avoid what's in water. I expect it's different in the Navy...
If your real concern is keeping interior air moist, the best you can do is a ventless gas burner. Some may not trust these. One big room on our property has a thermostat-controlled gas fire log. Natural gas has a yuuge amount of water in it, released on combustion. Forced-air gas furnaces have those heat exchangers that force that nice moisture out the flue.
