What's the Story Morning Glory?

"Morning glory" type spillway.

A spillway is built to keep water from overtopping a dam. If the water gets to high, it goes down the spillway, usually built to the side of the dam, rather than over the dam, which could damage the dam.

A morning glory spillway is a different kind of spillway, usually built in places where you cannot build a side spillway, like when a dam is built between two rocky hills.

Instead, the morning glory is big fat tube built high enough that water usually isn't high enough to go over its walls. But its walls are at just the right height that water will start going over them, and down the tube, when the water level behind the dam is getting dangerously high, high enough that it could go over the main dam if it got much higher.

The water flows down the tube beyond the dam in a controlled way. It's a way of letting excess water past the dam in a safer way than, you know, just rushing over the dam and maybe destroying it and killing everyone. There may be some flooding but not deadly flooding.

At least I think that's the deal. See this guy for the details.

Huh. I guess most ponds I've ever seen use a morning glory.

Not quite as glamorous when it's just a crappy piece of pipe found on another part of the farm or bought down at the co-op and then shoved into the dam-side of a wall that a couple of rednecks constructed before stocking the thing with crappie and largemouth, I guess.

68 We have a spillway, of course, adjacent to the dam, and there is generally a bit of water flowing over it, as the lake is creek-fed. For reasons that have been obscured by time, the pool below the spillway is referred to as 'The Granny Hole'.

In the event that we need to lower the lake, or during periods of extreme inflow, there is a hollow round drain tower that stands about 50' out from the shore. That is about 7' in diameter, with a manually operable valve on the outside of the lower part of the cylinder. The inner part of the tower is open to a tunnel (about 4' x 3') that drains to the lower creek bed about 70' away. I have been up through that tunnel (about 100 years old). Skeery.

101 I don't want Biden to stroke out.

I want him to shit himself on live TV. Just right down his pants leg for the whole world to see.

Then I want him to reach down, grab some and when the camera pans in....

103 yeah, my pond spillway just goes over the edge ... I did have to add some rock and concrete, or it would have eroded and drained the pond. Might add a pipe instead at some point ... could save some fish from going down the overflow.

But yeah, often all is well till you get a couple 2-3" rains in a few days.

115 Better Puttah creek (and Lake: condolences BH) story.
Took a nephew there to fish, unbeknownst to us they had just stocked the creek.
The 7 year old caught 17 fish. I spent the day taking fish off the hook and rebaiting.

Agreed.

Oasis does something with their sound on that album (Not a musician... I don't know the terms...). It kind of fills every nook and cranny of the ear. It just seems fuller than most music. There are no empty spaces in the sound. The song "Some Might Say" is a perfect example. Wild stuff.

121 One must keep their drone distant from that hole which creates quite a down draft, as you might imagine.

I'm sort of surprised no one has spent $100 (less probably) on one of the cheapo drones just to get that footage and put it on youtube.

I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning 16,000 US dollars a month by working on the connection, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed for me to attempt it simply. 128 I'd like to issue a correction. Apparently, the egress point of a "morning glory" spillway is NOT referred to as a "glory hole". Please do not search for this term.

Thank you.
