Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Oof: OPEC+ Panel Recommends Cutting Oil Production by 2 Million Barrels Per Day; White House Having "A Spasm and Panicking," Per US OfficialAn earlier report said that the panel might recommend a cut of more than one million barrels per day. But, via Bonchie from RedState, the cut was deeper than that:That's the recommendation. It hasn't been formally accepted yet. But we're looking at a big cut, and a big hike in oil prices. Right before the midterms. From CNN, via Bonchie: I understand why Russia wants to cut production-- maybe. I'm not sure why the Saudis would go along with it, but there are a couple of possibilities: 1, the Saudi crown prince is still angry that Biden accused him of murder, threatened him with consequences, and never apologized for doing so, even as he begged the Saudis to bail him out of a jam by increasing oil production to make up for the suppression of oil production that is a key plank of the Green New Disaster. 2, there is currently a fairly serious popular uprising going on in Iran. I hear from a source, who heard from his source, that this uprising is actually more serious than those in the West appreciate, and that the Revolutionary Guard has announced it will remain neutral if there's a credible challenge made against the regime itself. Recalling that Obama bailed Iran out of a similar threat-to-the-regime in 2009, I'm wondering if Biden is right now attempting to prop up the Iranian regime behind the scenes, and the Saudis (and the various other OPEC members who are allied against Iran) have decided to show their extreme opposition to the US again swooping in to save the mullahs. That is a complete wild-assed guess on my part. I know of no actual reporting suggesting a covert effort to aid the mullahs and I don't have any tips suggesting such a scheme, either. I'm just speculating about what could animate the Saudis to absolutely kick Biden in the Creepy Ivory Tombstone Veneers. And meanwhile the Biden Administration is calling this a "hostile act" and threatening our 60 year allies the Saudis -- "All to avoid more domestic oil production," as liberal-gone-sane Dr. Michael Shellenberger says. He posts this chart from the Wall Street Journal showing the oil leases granted by the federal government under presidents since JFK: President Joe Biden, spokespersons for his administration, and Congressional Democrats say they are trying to get out the truth about energy and climate change against Republican and fossil fuel efforts to deny it. Over the summer, Biden denied he was "limiting oil production" and accused oil refiners of restricting production. In July, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said, "natural disasters... are getting worse because of climate change," which, he said, had caused the war in Syria. And Rep. Ro Khanna, on September 15, 2022, said, "If there was a war on energy, how is Exxon, Chevron, BP, and Shell making over 200% profits? You can't have a war on an industry and then they're having record profits." But every one of their statements was false. Biden has leased far less federal land and off-shore waters for oil and gas production than any president since World War II, oil refiners are operating at maximum capacity, and Biden's EPA shut down a major oil refinery in the US Virgin Islands in May. The number of weather-related natural disasters has been declining since this century, and the claim that climate change caused the war in Syria has been soundly and repeatedly debunked. And, as I explained to Rep. Khanna during the September 15 Congressional hearing, big oil and gas companies have big profits precisely because the Biden administration and others have been stifling production, thereby reducing supplies, and increasing prices and profits. And yet the government conspires with the monopoly corporations whose very existence they control to censor and punish anyone who disputes their New Green Disaster narrative. Biden remains committed to the Green New Disaster, which plans for the artificial scarcity of energy. As his "best friend" Obama said about shutting down electricity-producing coal-fired power plants, "Electricity costs will necessarily skyrocket." Oil and gas prices are necessarily skyrocketing as Biden reduces production to a trickle, but he doesn't want Americans to get angry about this all at once. He wants them to be like the frogs, who get accommodated to boiling water by having the temperature raised on them a little at a time. So when the water starts to bubble and boil, Biden runs to Saudi Arabia and begs them to just open the taps more, just for a while, or he drains the Strategic Petroleum Reserve a little more, until it's nearly dry -- just so the boiling water doesn't quite scald the frogs and send the jumping out of the pot he's cooking them in. Sometimes he even ends sanctions against brutally repressive regimes: Michael ShellenbergerHe'll toss some cool water into the pot to reduce the over-boiling, but what he definitely does not want to do is take that pot off the stove. It is imperative that the pot be kept on the stove, and that the frogs always be kept on the slow boil. The Green New Disaster must continue at all costs, and no new American domestic oil production can be allowed. All he will do is Manage the Boiling by keeping it from boiling up too much all at once. But he will not turn the temperature down. The frogs must ultimately cook. They just must cook slowly enough that they do not revolt against the chefs. The Saudis are going to be inflicting some pain on America, but Biden could stop that pain almost immediately by ramping up America's own prodigious capacity for oil production. But he won't. Dinner must be served to the WEF, and you must eat the bugs. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Starting in 2020, all financing for any new drilling has been shut down hard. Small to midsize companies do not have the hundreds of millions of dollars that any major drilling program takes, so they are all in hunker down / wait until the financial-political climate changes. Gone now... swept away. For reasons long forgotten, two mighty warrior tribes went to war... and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all. Without fuel they were nothing. Remember that the previous crown prince in power, bin Talal, was a vocal Trump critic and a close ally to Obama, even having influence over the selection of Obama's cabinet members via Saudi's ownership stake of Citigroup. Within a year of Trump being in office, bin Talal and much of the Saudi royals were jailed by bin Salman over corruption charges, after which bin Salman and Trump were BFF. Their relationship is evident by how Trump went to Saudi Arabia to tell them to flush out all the violent Islamic radicals, which bin Salman immediately did, and executed many. At some point people are going to understand that one of reasons we had the Reagan recovery was low energy prices.
- 70s spikes caused massive exploration as well as transition away from oil for electricity and more efficient cars. - combined with the ME wars and OPEC nations cheating, the recovery happened in the face of an oil glut. Now throw in the fact that high unemployment at the time kept wage pressure down, and these two factors helped kill inflation. We need both factors again, and we have shit for brains trying to transition to unicorn farts. Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at October 05, 2022 01:56 PM (3sqAk) 300

322 On whale oil . . . coincidentally I watched in the Heart of the Sea last night. Mediocre movie that could have been much better. But I was reminded how batshit crazy insane these 19th century whalers were. They would sale from Nantucket all the way around South America to end up in the middle of the Pacific. Three year journeys. Then, when they spotted whales, they would row out right next to them in fucking ROWBOATS and harpoon the whales from there. Then hold on for dear life as the whales inevitably took off. An incredibly risky and brutal life, all for whale oil. Shows you just how valuable oil was (and still is).

It's a squeeze play by OPEC and Russia. Biden has boxed us in by emptying the SPR to a level not seen since 1984. We now only have a 22 day reserve. He has to refill it, and that will take away from actual domestic consumption. It would take a long time to get production back up to prior levels and the lease situation will take time to resolve. But you're right, they want the slow boil. But this move turns up the heat and it's going to get painful for Americans.
He could make things easier for Americans and truly hurt the Russians by raising production. But he won't do either because he and the Democrats are Leftist ideologues. They don't care who gets hurt. Posted by: Marcus T at October 05, 2022 02:19 PM (+Odgf) 419

Alternatively, maybe the world's oil producers have figured out that if the green bullshit is successfully imposed on us, their oil becomes worthless, so it's in both their short term and long term interest to turn the heat way up right now. Short term profit, and scuttling the green cult for long term profit. Posted by: Methos at October 05, 2022 02:20 PM (kOpft) 424
420 396 My landlord lawyer in Erie has a client with a supposed dead well. When the money is right, he'll fire up the pump and get what he can out of it, actually transported in barrels to one of the western PA refineries. Makes money, and the oil company with mineral rights are long gone.

Posted by: Methos at October 05, 2022 02:20 PM (kOpft) Real problem is that investment money for the oil industry has dried up, due to the administration waging war against oil... AND... the stupid Green ESG stuff. And it takes a lot of investment capital to get an oil field going. Posted by: Romeo13 at October 05, 2022 02:24 PM (oHd/0) 433

One other point missed is Biden's criminal mishandling of the STRATEGIC Petroleum Reserve:
If the steering conditions and wind shear had been slightly different, Ian could have been a Cat 5 tearing right through our prime offshore oil production and import facilities. The LOOP currently offloads 1.2 million barrels of oil/day. The port of Galveston used to take another million barrels/day. (Current rate?) If those were both shut in for 12 months, then the U.S. economy would die without crude from the SPR. Biden is a moron. (With a small "m".) Another commodity that the democrats are making unaffordable is natural gas which keeps many families from freezing to death in the winter. Home owners strapped for cash by higher food prices and the skyrocketing cost of gasoline will struggle to find home heating assistance since we will have spent all the money paying off the college debts of wealthier people.

Ace, you missed the biggest reasons why OPEC+ would support the cut:
First, to punish the US for manipulating prices through SPR releases. Now Slow Joe has to drain even faster just to break even. Second, and this is the important one, as a show of force against the G7 and their attempts to fix Russian oil prices. A demand side cartel powerful enough to fix Russian prices is an existential threat to the supply side cartel that is OPEC+. Even though the G7s idea was stupid and would never work, the attempt just be punished- they came at the king (albeit with a butter knife) and missed. And what affronts me is Brandon's administration's obnoxious obstinacy to revoke the prohibition for fracking and restart Keystone and pressure Canada. Nor will they finance a Mahstten project for nuclear power.

Two other possibilities:
1) The Saudis can't keep pumping at this rate. They say they have 50 years more of oil, but I've heard people estimate the answer is 7. 2) People I talk to say the brain drain for Russia is enormous and accelerating. Just like you can let go of the steering wheel and the car doesn't immediately crash, their oil industry is on autopilot. But it won't continue - this winter there will be a steep reduction in production, and there is not a damn thing they can do to stop it. better to cover that by saying your reduced production voluntarily. same people tell me the two pipelines most likely exploded due to operational issues.
