Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's just enjoy the animals and leave the world of politics outside today. We may need to keep our wits about us just to keep up with some of these critters.

Meet The PetMorons

maeve tq.jpg

This is Maeve. The woman I got her from told me that she was the queen of her house, so in keeping with my Irish roots, I decided to name her Maeve, after a very famous Queen of Connacht.

She is very sweet (until she isn't), but looking at the pic can't you almost hear her saying "We are NOT amused!"?

RobertM

Yes.

The attached are not my pets but do hang out in my yard.
A couple of these are from last winter but still amusing.
Use them if you think they're good enough.

Winston

Shot #1 is a cat crawling along my fence trying to not touch the snow.

Shot #2 is a yellow headed blackbird

Shot #3 is a neighbor's big gray kittie. Skittish so I have to sneak up on him.

Shot #4 is one of many quail that come for the birdseed.

Oh, so now we know your secret: birdseed. I love the little quail with the little topknot on its little head.

Hollie.jpg

These are the two newest additions to Shep's. Henk is 9 years old and had to go to the shelter when his owner passed. Hollie is around 10 we think. She has a bad skin condition but we're working on getting her back to normal. She was a stray. Both are super sweet doggies!

Thanks for your great work, Jewells. Both pups look very appreciative.

de farm group.jpg

I have driven by this farm for several years.....we called it old McDonald's farm as the collection of peacocks, pigs, ducks, geese, dogs cats, etc., made for fun viewing.

A year ago I began to notice that no one was living there....finally found out that the owner had cancer and was being taken care of in a facility.
After a few days I decided to start feeding the cats....at that time there was about 30.

But over this past year the population would come and go.
I stop in several times a week to feed and water.....all are feral, except one that made his way into my van and has become my shop cat.

They are always out to greet me in the mornings I come by.....as seen in this photo.

Tom from Michigan

p.s. They ignore me if I am in a vehicle other than my white van.

Sorry to learn why the cats needed your help. Glad you were there.

2 Always great to see the Pet Morons!

I brought Allie into the house last night because of a frost warning. I didn't want her to get too cold in the sunroom. So I fixed up my library a bit and let her stay in there. She had warmth, food, water, and a litter box. And all the reading material she'll need for a lifetime!

Best of all the night passed uneventfully and no one (Penny, Jasmine, or Kaylee) tried to claw their way into the library...

5 Yay for Hank and Mollie (and continued prayers for jewells.) I love the name Maeve. The plus-sized grey neighbor cat makes my Reina look svelte but, alas, my ginger girl must stay on her kitteh ‘reducing plan.’

7 Neighbor cat whisperer asked me if I had seen the black feral, concerned he has crawled someone to die in private. Rallying a little last week vet sent him home, having run out of tricks. Cat let me pet him for the first time in years, maybe as if to say "goodbye". Sigh. He looked *terrible*.

Posted by: Commissar of Plenty and Lysenko Solutions at October 08, 2022 03:28 PM (hUvnA)

8 My two kittehs are sleeping right now but at about 4:00 or 5:00 the sister kitteh will wake up and yell at me to take her and her brother for a walk. If I ignore her she will just yell louder. I've yet to outlast her.

Posted by: polynikes at October 08, 2022 03:31 PM (/+BsJ)

9 The Kid's rescue cat, Spatula Kitty (100 points for Weird Al reference) has finally figured out Wet Food.
For the longest time she was like, 'What's this? This isn't like what I always got!" Then study it while The Old Cat bolted over and ate it all right in front of her.
So now she's learned to copy the Old One and run when she hears the spoon clank in the can.

Posted by: LenNeal at October 08, 2022 03:33 PM (43xH1)

10 I never noticed it, but it seems this house is full of places for my cat to sleep in the sun. I think it's due to the double hung windows. And, as a bonus, the back door has a glass window, so Fanny can sit and look out at the back yard. It has taken awhile, but the cat is finally settling in.

Jake, the springer, catches crickets, so he's cool with the new place.

11 You would not believe the email I get from cats who read the Gun Thread!

Posted by: Weasel at October 08, 2022 03:34 PM (0IeYL)

12 I said two mornings ago that I was going to keep my spirits up in the face of depressing daily news, by adopting another kitten. Went to the shelter that day and brought home Julius, a nine-week-old black kitten. He is precious, as kittens usually are. Been a long time since I had such a tiny boy.

He will be a good companion to my yuge orange tabby Rufus who is eighteen months. This morning they touched noses and neither of them hissed!

Posted by: skywch at October 08, 2022 03:35 PM (uqhmb)

13 I'd liked to put collars on my cats like Maeve but they wouldn't stand for it. Should have started when they were kittens. I'd love to put a spike collar on the 20lb brother kitteh.

21 At the supermarket we once had a hugely fat woman riding around on an electric cart with a teacup Chihuahua stuck in her cleavage, only it's head sticking out. I thought it was a necklace until it yapped! One lady on the shift, animal lover/people hater, was horrified.
"Oh my God, that poor thing will suffocate in that!"

Posted by: LenNeal at October 08, 2022 03:44 PM (43xH1)

22 Some cats don't mind collars. Mine does. If I put a collar on him he will not rest until it's off. Same thing with a leash harness, which he hates, but he can't get it off so he just lays there on the floor looking miserable until I remove it. Forget walking him in it.
It's a drag (rim shot)....

25 Dash The Russian Blue, the most excellent cat, loved collars and was always very proud of them; except his sister littermate Dot hated collars and would chew them off and chew his off too!

Posted by: LenNeal at October 08, 2022 03:54 PM (43xH1)

26 The Ex was quite the seamstress and once made Dash a little blue Superkitty cape which he LOVED! Until the day he jumped onto the toilet tank, slipped, and fell into the bowl where I couldn't help but pee all over him and his Superkitty cape.
After that he would wear a collar, but not a cape...

Posted by: Eromero at October 08, 2022 04:08 PM (/RDPd)

30 The yellow headed blackbird is around here in early spring to early summer. They're quite colorful and I get a few of them. The quail are year round and much smarter than I imagined. They'll post lookouts to warn the ones feeding on the ground about cats and hawks.

The cats belong to neighbors. The snow was 19" deep when he crawled along the fence. It was funny to watch him.

Posted by: Winston, GOPe, not one dime, not one vote at October 08, 2022 04:11 PM (t0O2k)

31 I did have a horrific rescue black cat named Loki, who I inherited from a chick who brought his awful ass with her, then left. He loved money and guns.
If I laid currency out he'd run in and Roll in it like Scrooge McDuck, and if I brought a gun to his party he'd rub his face all over the barrel and action, purring and yowling.
I think, personally, he was some reincarnated drug dealer trapped in a cat body and he wanted vengeance on his enemies.
That cat LOVED guns. Loved them. Cash, too.

32 My neighborhood has almost completely turned over. Its gone from only 3 kids under 12 to over a dozen.
They all know Joe. And when we take our noontime walk, he becomes very excited when he sees each one. and very upset when someone doesn't show up. It's like he knows them all.

54 Afternoon, pet people! I napped a little later than I expected, and then spent time lazing there while Stirling the big black kitten curled up next to me and nuzzled and kneading my arm. Presently Dagny the tiny Siberian sprang onto the bed and commenced to groom.

They are okay with each other, I guess. Not wildly happy, not grooming each other or anything. Stirling is the big news: Since his snip he has calmed enormously, so much that I miss the rambunctious kitten he used to be and that I complained about so often! He has gone from 6-month-old hellraiser to 1950s suburban dad in the space of 3 weeks. I've never seen a transformation like it before . . . and, you know, it makes me kind of sad.

56 Wolfus, that does sound like a bigger than usual personality switch for Stirling. I've never noticed it much in cats I've had snipped. They had already done little Julius at the shelter, which seemed awfully young.

But it's amazing how quick they do grow up. Rufus was a kitten for a few weeks and then...wasn't. I'm determined to enjoy every minute of Julius. He kneads my arm and tries to suckle, like you said Stirling did.

Stirling's claws pricking my arm feels like that pinch or mild sting you get when they draw blood from you. Fortunately he has not done that.

Should I worry about him and the relatively quick change? He eats and uses the box, but he seems less inclined to play with me. He and Dagny were chasing each other for a while. I certainly am giving him no less attention than I do the little girl. But maybe he feels neglected? I may send her over to Miss Linda's tonight and see if he perks up.

True. Of course he never got a chance to use his wedding tackle, so he doesn't know what he missed. (Though he must have had some idea of what to do; he was trying to mount Dagny for the first week or so after his operation.) I wish I hadn't had to do it, and if I hadn't adopted a female, I'd have let him go a little longer.

79 I had two young kittens. Neutered the male when he began spraying, the female, a Siamese, when she went into heat, nonstop wailing.

81 See, I messed that up too (80).
Wolfus, if you’re still reading this- I’m sorry if this offends, as I know you’re a cat lover who does a good job with kitties. Stirling has become a “suburban dad” because you had him neutered very, very young (as you were advised to do) and because he’s strictly an indoor cat. I understand your circumstances. Not criticizing your decision. But these 2 factors change behavior. There’s no use longing for behavior/characteristics that have been closed off for Stirling. Vets…advise things for certain reasons, and you have certain constraints. None of this is unusual. I hope he and Dagny, and you, will be as happy as can be.

84 83. Thanks, Huck! You know how it is. Perfectionism is a vice but forgiving typos/haste is a necessity on sites with no edit function. We will never forgive autocorrect, though, amiright?!

85 Oh, Wolfus, I'm sorry for your sorrow. I've been disturbed since reading about Stirling. Sad. I adopted my current cat when he was an adult. Good-natured, phlegmatic. I thought that was just his temperament. Now I'm wondering if he was neutered too young.

Words fail me.
