Is This Something?

Come for the monsters, stay for the Friendship!

This is the second "Shin" movie. The first was Shin Godzilla That was very well received.

It opened yesterday in America.

This already released in Japan. There's a long video for the movie here which contains spoilers, like a really weird thing at 3:10. I guess someone borrowed the Beta Capsule.

(Apparently -- still in spoilers -- there is precedent in the Ultraman Canon.)

Via soothsayer, as true now as it was then:

This is totally something, right?

How have I never heard of the Nolan Sisters? Wait -- now there's five of them?!?!

As Butthead would say: "Uhhhhhh... allright."

They have a bunch of songs. This was definitely a thing between 1976 and 1982. Maybe it didn't actually make it across the Atlantic to America. It did seem to make it to Japan, though. They also reference being a hit in Japan in this "wacky" 1980 video. The newspaper headline near the beginning says "NOLANS No. 1 IN JAPAN."

Shin Godzilla was pretty good. I'm not a big fan of the overall franchise, though, so breaking with the silliness inherent with the franchise was overall a good thing.

19 One thing about Shin Godzilla that I found kind of funny:

It's really nationalistic. Like, super pro-Japanese. Never mind the whole problematic history Japan has with their history of empire, the movie was praised left and right and its final act is all, "We're Japan. We're the best country on earth, and we're going to fix this where America just wants to bomb everything."

Nationalism isn't a problem when it's someone other than America.

It's like the rough masculinity of the main characters in the Indian movie RRR. American masculinity is bad, but Indian masculinity is awesome, dudes!

21 These movies are so stupid: obvious silly costumes, farfetched plots involving looming global destruction, and endless physical fights between the heroes and villains. The Japanese really need to learn how to make good, believable movies geared for adults like Hollywood does.

Ah. Thanks. Song came out in 1991. Not sure that song made it to the UK. Never heard it there. I didn't hear it till I got back in late '93. Music industry had moved on from him I guess. I remember watching a VH1 retrospective about him in the mid 90s. That's probably when I heard 'Girlfriend'. It was a decent song.

24 There was a Japanese movie about a guy who's job was to fight all the monsters that invaded there. I think he was depressed and didn't like doing that job or felt burdened by it. My recollection was that it was mediocre, I wanted it to be better because the premise sounded fun. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Maybe 15 years ago.

26 Motorhead appeared on Top of the Pops once when the Nolan Sisters were also on the same episode. Lemmy, in a later interview about that appearance:

“No (there was no fling), but it wasn’t for the want of trying. They are awesome chicks. People forget those girls were onstage with Frank Sinatra at the age of 12. They’ve seen most things twice.

“We were on Top of the Pops at the same time as them and our manager was trying to chat up Linda: the one with the bouffant hair and the nice boobs. He dropped his lighter and bent down to pick it up. Linda said to him, ‘While you’re down there, why don’t you give me a…’ It blew him away. We didn’t expect that from a Nolan sister. None of us did.

“We were supposed to be the smelliest, loudest motherf**kers in the building but we more than met our match. We were in awe. You couldn’t mess with the Nolan sisters.”

The original Godzilla was about Japanese war guilt. American audiences took it as some sort of nuclear weapon morality tale, but that never made sense. If American nuclear testing woke a monster in the South Pacific, Australia is a lot closer. If it's an Angry Gaia, than it hits Hawaii, not Tokyo.

The decision to surrender was a traumatic one for Japan because it betrayed all those who fought to the death. Godzilla rose from the South Pacific because that was where most of their war dead were lost. Godzilla attacked Japan because prosperity was returning, and the unquiet dead were angry.

The story then shifted into light comedy and silly rubber-suit boxing matches. But it's now becoming serious again, and Godzilla is a metaphor for China - a looming monster that must be confronted and defeated. And yes, Japan is trying to build renewed admiration for military service.

I have mixed feelings on this Shin series. Doing Godzilla and Ultraman with modern special effects and good dubbing kind of takes the charm away. I have fond memories of shitty Japanese superhero TV series when I was growing up in Hawaii in the 70s.

Funny thing for us kids, Ultraman dubbed in English was kind of lame compared to stuff like Kikaida and V3 Kamen Riders in the original Japanese with subtitles.

Hell, I can still sing most of the Kikaida theme. Badly, but I know the words (phonetically).

That's not surprising, given you're not its core audience. Of course, it can't actually be a 'cliche' because it was the one that defined them.

It's like deriding Citizen Kane because the techniques are all too familiar. Well yes, they were premiered in that film. The problem with Kane is that outside of knowing its innovations, it's not that good on its own.

Casablanca, on the other hand, always impresses.

Well...a big part of that was, at least for the Japanese, was a bit of wish-fulfillment about their gov't.

The Fukushima reactor disaster was magnified by the pretty much total failure of the Japanese gov't meandering lack of response.

In "Shin Godzilla", they're on top of the situation of the radiation-shedding, transforming Godzilla, in all the best ways possible.

If you squint a bit, you can see Fukushima threaded all through this movie.

As for critics, I think it was just the attraction of "something new" in a Godzilla movie. I imagine a gender-flipping Godzilla would have them all drowning in a cumstorm of praise.

91 It's like deriding Citizen Kane because the techniques are all too familiar. Well yes, they were premiered in that film. The problem with Kane is that outside of knowing its innovations, it's not that good on its own.

Citizen Kane still stands up as a movie, its really well done. It just isn't as awe-inspiring and amazing as it was when it first came out. Its like the Matrix: still holds up as a fun and entertaining movie but its not as jaw-dropping and amazing film to watch as it was when it first came out.

For what its worth, its a different version of Daredevil than the Frank Miller/Netflix one. Its more like the Stan Lee written one when he first was introduced (and has more of a yellow costume, like he started with).

I did like that the writers (by accident or maybe a consultant's advice) did follow two comic book rules:
1) when two heroes first meet, they usually fight
2) the hero's book the fight takes place in wins

129 This really belongs on the Saturday Movie Thread, but thanks to TCM, I watched an old French film, Carnival of Sinners. The literal translation of the original title is The Hand of the Devil. An starving painter buys a cursed severed hand, which makes him successful, rich, and happily married to a beauty. But if he doesn't sell it for less than he paid, he'll go straight to Hell after one year. The problem: he paid one sou, which was the smallest unit of currency at the time. (The Devil reminds the artist that they don't make centimes anymore.)

It's less a horror film than a fairy tale, but some of the twists in the plot are surprising even though it strictly follows the "rules" of the fairy tale. Smart and well made.

We started to go over the in bridge in Tokyo where in the movies Godzilla always picked up the train and tossed it around. When we were about halfway over the bridge I looked out the window and said I didn't see Godzilla. A complete hush came over the train car for the rest of the ride.

Apparently, if you're smart about it and just have little tucks and such as you age, plastic surgery can work really well in maintaining your good looks.

240 @142 They wrote She-Hulk as a whore for the show. My Goodness!

----

She's like that in the comic books. She's notoriously promiscuous, and has slept with a wide range of male characters. There's been a couple of amusing bits from that, like the time she was defending a superhero named Starfox in court. Starfox has an emotion control ability, and used it to charm women. Eventually someone at Marvel noted that if Starfox did this to a woman and then slept with her, it was arguably a form of rape. So he went to court in the comic books, and She-Hulk was acting as his defense attorney. And while she was in court, She-Hulk remembered that she'd slept with him in the past, and started wondering if it was because he'd used his emotion control ability on her...

Nothing sexual, but talking about how thousands of generations of his ancestors were spending their eternity looking down from Heaven watching him play Minecraft every day and how he felt kind of bad about not doing something more meaningful. It was pretty funny to ponder.

As a toddler, I developed a bad habit of sucking my fingers. Like a baby sucks their thumb. Only I did this up until an age long past when I should have stopped. Was always ashamed of it, but not sure why I kept doing it. Tried plenty of times, my dad even threatened to duct tape oven mitts to my hand to keep me from doing it. Nothing worked.

Then my grandpa died. And it was my first experience with death. I remember the first time after he died that I went to do that again, I thought of how ashamed of me he would be to look down from heaven and see me doing that. So I stopped immediately and never did it again.

Of course this didn't stick with me throughout the rest of my childhood, teen and adult life, as I have done plenty of stupid stuff. But I remember that feeling as a kid wanting him to be proud of me and it got me to stop immediately.

335 My Quick Hits comment that I tried to post earlier...

MBS leading the charge to CUT oil production a month from the midterms should be viewed as a deliberate political act. The Saudis want Trump to be president so they get total impunity for their human rights abuse, and staff like Kushner they can buy and sell. No more fist bumps.

I had a thought yesterday about the cutting of oil production. This is a bad thing for gas prices, sure. But isn't that a good thing for the Marxist/WEF cabal who wants to force "green" energy on the world?

Everyone on the left when confronted about high gas prices always answers the same way... "this is a perfect opportunity to now transition to green energy". They do not see high gas prices as a bad thing at all, but rather as a weapon to use to push their Great Reset shit.

So they're complaining about it, sure, but that's just political bluster to appease the masses to look like they agree with the masses. But they don't mind high gas prices at all. They have wanted high gas and energy prices for decades now. "Under my plan, energy prices will necessarily skyrocket". Behind closed doors, they love what MBS is doing.

Posted by: Clyde Shelton at October 07, 2022 06:18 PM (Do5/p)

336 CaliGirl I used to study things carefully. Long time since that seemed necessary or useful. Most of the consequential ones in recent years have been obviously idiotic.

Bullet trains?? WTFF? De-criminalizing lots of minor crimes of the sort that lead to general chaos? WTFF? And on, and on. Used to be that one could do a quick take by seeing who was supporting/opposing a measure. As institutions have collapsed and the populace and especially the "elites" have become much, much, much less intelligent or worldly or serious, this quick route has sort of lost its power.

I am still not convinced that the Left is even worried about the elections at all. They stole 2020 and faced absolutely no consequences. And they control every institution in the country. Why would they allow themselves to lose power when they can simply steal the elections again. Who is going to stop them. No one. Laws on the books now? So what. Who is going to enforce them.

I still remember the lead up to the 2020 election with Biden hiding in his basement and everything logical stated that Biden had no chance to win. And then he "won". I am not going to believe we'll ever have non-rigged elections again until I see results this November and November 2024 showing conservative victories.

Yes, but they have a lot of inertia to allocate blame for their actions anyway.

379 Clyde, GOP picked up seats in 2020. Oh yes the overall pattern has anomalies of historic dimensions, none of which anyone has even attempted to explain (note the utter disappearance of post-election entrail-reading demo analysis, which used to go on ad nauseam, every cycle). But House races are much more difficult to steal.

And, unlike the presidential, whose safeguards are enshrined in legislatures (both state and federal), House races are quite routinely over-turned by courts. The presidential safeguards - all of them - of course completely failed, and the back-up system, the courts, also completely failed.

But the country's being abused sufficiently to enhance the near-inevitable normal mid-term losses for the WH party, so big "wins" likely. What the value or point of same will be - an entirely separate question - is another thing.

You underestimate their stupidity/ignorance.

They really believe that there is limitless electricity in this country. They think that the grid has no upper limit, just lazy operators and we need more solar/wind power generation.

There is zero contradiction between them thinking that oil production needs to cease but gas prices should fall because they are so divorced from reality that anything is possible.

401 Oh that's just "chef's kiss" about the Vegas killer being a criminal illegal alien. Confirmed that CA denied an ICE detainer for him? Careful, ICE has under current policy drastically reduced even the limited effort to get custody of serious criminal aliens. Oh yes. There's no limit to the idiocy of your fellow Americans or their collapsed institutions.

So if it's true ICE wanted him and was denied, then it's a nice darkly amusing bit of outrageous malfeasance with bloody consequences.

But almost nobody in this brain-dead "country" will care.
