THE MORNING RANT: Get Woke Go Broke – Unilever Edition

Another woke CEO has run his company into the ground and is being ushered out of his job. This time it’s Unilever’s Alan Jope.

He is a far-left activist who seeks to rid the world of the energy that fuels its prosperity, but you still have to wonder if his catastrophic mismanagement of Unilever might have caused him to go super-woke. Perhaps he thought loony eco-leftism might provide a protective shield against his inevitable ouster for the damage he caused the company.

If you aren’t familiar with Unilever, you are certainly familiar with its stable of brands, which include Hellman’s, Lipton, Knorr, Dove, Dollar Shave Club, Suave, and many other familiar products.

Jope became CEO of Unilever in January 2019. It didn’t take long for him to start trying to impose enviro-communism on the capitalist enterprise he ran, and to also impose it on all other businesses. Advocating for mandatory, externally imposed ESG (“Environmental Social Governance” is not the hallmark of a man who believes in free enterprise.

Alan Jope - ESG.JPG

Unsurprisingly, there was pushback by people who believe in freedom and free markets.

Also unsurprisingly, with Unilever struggling under Jope’s mismanagement, he sought to buy some market share and gain additional revenue with an acquisition, specifically by acquiring the consumer healthcare division of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) whose products include Tums, Advil, and Excedrin. The final offer was £50 billion (roughly $68 billion at the time.)

GSK ultimately declined the offer. When the deal officially died in January 2022, Unilever’s stock quickly lost about 20% of its value. With the company in crisis, it was also announced that 1,500 employees were being let go.

Activist investor Nelson Peltz saw a great opportunity, not only with the battered stock, but also with Unilever shareholders desperate for relief from the damage Jope was doing to the company with his ESG agenda. So Peltz started buying shares, and by May 2022 he had worked himself onto the Board of Directors.

Jope responded to Peltz and the angry shareholders by doubling down on the ESG agenda that was destroying Unilever.

Just last week, before the news broke that Jope’s tenure was coming to an end, he appeared with Bill Clinton at whatever the Clinton Global Initiative is, and Jope remained defiantly adamant that he would continue to impose the eco-communist agenda on Unilever despite the “anti-sustainability” and “anti-woke” backlash.

Unilever's Alan Jope says company 'will not back down' on sustainability agenda: [Fox News – 9/21/2022]

Unilever CEO Alan Jope reaffirmed the consumer goods giant's sustainability agenda Tuesday, saying it "will not back down" despite "anti-sustainability" and "anti-woke" backlash.

The chief executive, speaking during a Tuesday panel at the 2022 Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York, called "anti-sustainability" and "anti-woke" backlash "incredibly dangerous for the world." He also argued that saying "we have a climate emergency" has started becoming unpopular.

"The first thing that Unilever will do is we will not back down on this agenda despite these populist accusations," he said.

He may have finally gone too far by at one point acknowledging that he’ll continue to prioritize ESG activism over his fiduciary duty to shareholders.

Unilever and Bill Clinton ESG.JPG

The hammer finally dropped this week. Unilever could not wait any longer to put a stop to the damage Jope was doing. Although he’ll retain his title for another year while the Board searches for someone to rescue the company from the damage he has done, Jope’s days of actively destroying Unilever in obedience to Klaus Schwab and Greta Thunberg are over.

Unilever CEO Set to Leave After GSK Debacle, Arrival of Activist Investor [US News – 9/26/2022]

Unilever said CEO Alan Jope would retire at the end of 2023, announcing the move less than a year after a bungled attempt to buy GSK's consumer healthcare business, and two months after activist investor Nelson Peltz joined the board.

The British consumer products maker said its board would start a formal search for a successor to Jope, a Unilever veteran who took up his role at the start of 2019,

The [GSK] move was met with disapproval from shareholders, some of whom also criticised Unilever for prioritising sustainability over core growth.

Unilever's shares rose almost 4% in early trading, hitting their highest since August last year.

Let’s look at how Unilever stock has done under Jope’s awful stewardship. It was trading at approximately $53 per share when he took over in January 2019, rising to $63 per share just a few months later in August. It’s now trading at around $43 per share, a 19% reduction in value from when he took over, and a 32% drop from its peak. By contrast, even with the current bear market, the S&P 500 is up about 40% from January 2019.

$100,000 invested in Unilever stock in January 2019 is now worth about $81,000.

$100,000 invested in the S&P 500 in January 2019 is now worth about $140,000.

Get woke, go broke.

Songs of the Season

This is the first weekend of October, which means Oktoberfests will be popping up everywhere!

I love them. The food, music, and good cheer combined with mild autumn weather just put a smile on everyone’s faces. The Oktoberfest of my upbringing was Wurstfest in New Braunfels, Texas. It was full of family fun all day, but college kids from all over Texas would also party there at night. I recall Myron Floren of Lawrence Welk fame playing his accordion at Wurstfest into the 1990s, and the college kids loved him, knowing that he was going to play the Aggie War Hymn and The Eyes of Texas every show.

Are you going to an Oktoberfest? If so, you’ll probably hear this song.

“In Heaven There Is No Beer”

And of course, the sister song that is also frequently performed.

Its nice to see these young hipsters having some fun with the music of their great-grandparents. Maybe there’s an emerging genre of “alt-polka.”

“No Beer Today”

Have a great weekend.

Stockholders are usually more concerned with the performance of the company than trendy political ideologies. At least, the companies where that's true tend to remain in business. The others? Well...

...

True story wall of text since page breaks are no bueno. We were in Indonesia at the time of the tsunami, and in the aftermath my missions org tried to figure out how to help. We started doing micro loans. Our first and main guy we helped was a fertilizer and seed seller in Muelaboh. Monsanto products and Monsanto would not forgive his debt. Those guys really really deserve their reputation. Anyway this family ran out of their house during the earthquake and watched it collapse as they stood in front. Then their shop was flooded.

The next day (this was before we met him and I don't know where he got them) this guy was selling cigarettes in the street. Because it turns out that if your whole world is destroyed and you're down to your last peso, you'll spend it on cigarettes. Guy was a genius salesman.

If you have an Ollies Wholesale nearby, they often have the big names like Gilette for 1/4 of what they sell for at Walmart or Amazon. And Gilette won't get a penny because Ollies bought out some company's shelves that needed the space and they're just hoping to sell it to you.

That said, they're not as good a deal as they used to be, but Dorco makes good inexpensive stuff. You could find crazy deals a few years ago (razor and a half dozen blades for three or four dollars), but I think they're name is out there now and they don't offer those sales any longer. Worth a try if you're in the market, though.

I just buy the generic disposables at WalMart of the dollar store. About the only personal care product that I buy as a brand is Zest soap, because it is the only one that performs well in hard water here. It was dropped as a brand by one of the biggies, not sure if Unilever or P&G, but it was picked up by a small company in Utah, and is now made there.

Because the left in the US has perpetually looked to Euroland as their dream. This is despite the fact that even the poorest state in the US, MS, is wealthier than most of the states in Euroland.

As far as inflation, one of the issues is that the US is the reserve currency and there is a whole pool of dollars in Europe that are the Eurodollar markets. In addition, much of those Eurodollars come from the price of oil being stated in dollars in much of the world. So, you increase the dollars here, they spurt out over there as well.

138 @38 496-Them Jeremys Razors I've seen come with multiple blades, up to six on their cartridge. I think I've seen some that had only three.

Rule of thumb with shaving; Cartridges or disposables with one blade=one pass in one pass. Three blades=three passes in one pass. Five blades=five passes in one pass.

For wet shaving with a straight or safety(one razor) it is recommended you do three passes maximum. So if you are getting razor burn or irritation reduce the amount of blades in a cartridge or disposable down to 1-3 blades. This will reduce the amount of irritation to your face.

The incentive structure for CEO and investors in the US are perverted by the capital gains tax rates and interest being deductible. So, the fastest way to grow a company's revenue is to buy others using debt. Leverage works to your favor when interest rates are low but is a bitch when they go higher. Low Capital gains rates versus ordinary income taxed dividends incentivize investors to seek the fast buck rather than the stable one. This is compounded by the fact that interest is deductible but dividends aren't at the corporate level. A lot of the financial boom bust cycle could be alleviated by preferred stock issuance instead of debt. Won't happen because of US tax law incentives.

I'll use a 5mm or a 3mm- if I am feeling like it- on the goatee, but do sans guard for the remainder. I did a 3mm on the head (equivalent to #1 in real units) last time and I might do it again. It is a bit chilly at first but it is definitely low maintenance.

"Truth is beauty," Mr. Madison. It's inverse - "falsity is ugliness," if you will - must also be true. Beauty and ugliness are, of course, in the eye of the beholder to a degree though there are objective measures of beauty. One of those measures is quantity. "The greatest good for the greatest number" is more beautiful than "some good for some number" but less beautiful than "maximal good for all." Anything that takes off our path toward maximal good for all is regressive, reactionary and, yes, ugly. It is that ugliness that erodes the beauty of the perfection we could achieve if not for the corrosive elements that worship and elevate the ugly to the deliberate and calculated detriment of the beautiful.

240 And this is the problem with the "climate emergency" stuff. Sure people say they care about it, but then if you tell them you are going to take things away from them to "save the erf" they say no...

A lot of electric utilities have programs that offer to sell you "100% renewable energy" for an extra ten bucks a month or so.

It's not that "100% renewable energy" costs an extra ten bucks a month, but that's the most that people will pay.

Even then, only a small fraction of people will take the utilities up on that deal.

Utopianism is the root cancer. It has many varieties, from socialism to this weird new Wokism to various attempts at theocratic perfection, but the root poison is utopianism. If you believe man, nature and their various systems are perfectible, there is nothing so evil that it cannot be justified to achieve it. Beyond justification, you are *compelled* to take those steps, because to not take them is to give up on perfection.

Any person, system, etc. that has perfection as its end goal is one that should be marginalized immediately.

287 I'll admit that I do have a Commander Riker-style beard (I grew mine before he did), and so I have less actual facial real estate to shave than some others. If I ever trim the beard back to a Hans Gruber-style "ring" beard, I'll have to learn how to shave the lower edge of my jaw where there used to be hair. But my shaving skills, I think, are up to it.

341 Utopianism is the root cancer. It has many varieties, from socialism to this weird new Wokism to various attempts at theocratic perfection, but the root poison is utopianism. Utopianism is essentially saying to God: were I you--even on a limited scale--things would be right.

It usually involves tearing down all current systems of society and then quickly slapping something together when all the emergencies arise from the collapse of all systems. And then looking around for where to put all the spare pieces.

The truly rational thing is to not accept that whatever you create will (of course!) be better than the original.

Inflation is not caused by government, but rather a lack thereof. It’s caused by unfettered capitalism & greed culture—where a CEO is duty-bound to feed the insatiable shareholder as much as possible. Your high grocery bill is going to record profits, not carbon tax.#greedflation

Let's try this out...

The grocery store cartels all decide to raise their prices together. So people...stop buying as many groceries (buying cheaper things or growing their own).

And...this has no impact on inflation. One dollar still buys the same number of pencils, or seed packets or kw/h or whatever.

370 The "free healthcare" thing. Can't say I've experienced it. My impression, for what it's worth, is that if you have the sniffles it works all right, but if you have something major you either get used to a long wait or you can make out your will.
Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at September 30, 2022 11:35 AM (1Nxff)

This is why young people, who tend to not have anything major, are so much in favor of it.

Also, again, because they don't understand WHY American healthcare costs what it does. I see lots of youtube videos where they'll ask people in Europe "duh...duh...duh...guess how much it costs for an American to visit the emergency room." Cue shrieking. None of these channels bothers with the why it's that way.

Trump was a tyrant that corporations feared, so they kept prices down. Biden is weak and too in love with democratic principles, so corporations feel free to rape the American consumer for insane profits.

The only solution is clear. To defeat corporations, you must elect Trump.

LOL!

I used to use Dollar Shave Club. Then they started getting really aggressively woke (and hipster woke at that), so I dropped them. They had a decent product, though, so I did some homework and found that they were just rebadging razors and handles from the South Korean company "Dorco." Their stuff is available under their own brand, too, for about the same price (around $1.25 - $1.50 per cartridge for the four-blade I use), so I just buy those now. I get about a year's worth at a time and leave 'em in a drawer.

They make a number of great models. I've been told to stay away from their blades. Usually I load Personna Platinums or Lab Blues in it. My regular brush is a synthetic I bought a year before the Coof Hysteria; I thought I didn't like the way it felt, but then, with time to experiment at home, I found I preferred it to my badger brush. 402 Mentioned this yesterday. "Populist" has been (like so many other words and concepts) completely inverted or distorted to the point it has become an empty, vague epithet screeched by the less intelligent, knowledgeable, or serious (i.e., most of the "press", half/more of the political class, and a huge number of dumbed down voters/"citizens").

Having a border. Having rule of law, in immigration and in general. Having rational, productive policies on economic matters, instead of stupid, destructive, obviously ill-advised ones. Not accepting completely science-free, ridiculous "scientific" rationales behind many destructive, stupid policies. Valuing human liberty and freedom.

These are in no way "populist" in the historic meaning. Current use of "populist" is just one more illiterate slur by illiterates (especially the "educated") who don't understand anything important in the public policy area and substitute dumb tribalism and fake religions and resentment and social conformity for thought and civilized values.
