76 Two Men Contemplating the Moon (German: Zwei Männer in Betrachtung des Mondes) and Man and Woman Contemplating the Moon are a series of similar paintings by Caspar David Friedrich, the setting being among his best-known works. Friedrich painted at least three versions, with one variation featuring a man and a woman. The 1819–20 version in the Galerie Neue Meister is thought to be the original; the c. 1824 variant with a woman is in the Alte Nationalgalerie; and the c. 1830 version is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

So this must be the 1824 version.

96 Artist biography: Caspar David Friedrich was the most important German painter and draughtsman of the early Romantic period. He started his artistic training in 1790 when he became a private student of Johann Gottfried Quistorp in Greifswald. In 1794 he entered the Academy of Copenhagen where he formed his style copying antique sculptures. During this period he served as an apprentice under Christian August Lorentzen and Jens Juel. These artists were exponents of the Sturm und Drang movement which was characterized by individual subjectivity and heightened emotionality.

118 For instance, in old Europe most people carried a small wooden ball as everyone knew that-

a rousing game of "fetch" was the best way to ward off a werewolf attack.
Posted by: naturalfake at October 03, 2022 09:59 A

This didn't last long, as the werewolves refused to let them make "fetch" happen.

119 The original legends pre-Gygax could be quite amusing

For example in slavic mythology to defeat a vampire you'd dig up their corpse and remove their clothes and the vampire would literally die from embarrassment.

129 I love the composition of this piece. I like how the couple are part of the landscape and add to the framing of the Moon and Venus (I believe). The couple does not distract from the celestial focus. Because of the careful framing, the trees and landscape highlight the lights. The people seem to join nature in admiring them and contemplating them. Friedrich's work is full of this humans-contemplating-nature idea.

I'm suddenly remembered of that viral writing assignment from something like a decade ago. Two students were tasked with writing a story, each person writing a small section at a time before handing it off to the next person for the next section.

It was a boy and a girl. The boy wanted to write a space action adventure. The girl wanted to write a relationship drama. The boy's story's characters ended up killing the girl's characters, or something. It was hilarious.

No, year around, justices are assigned circuits and can issue short stays on a lower court's ruling until the whole Supreme Court votes to hear the case or not. This often occurs by phone, fax, etc.

Remnant of older days when Justices used to spend part of their time deciding cases as a circuit judge in a particular jurisdiction aka riding the circuit. Establishing the Courts of Appeal in the 1890's ended that.

Lindsay Graham put forward a 15 week ban, which, as far as I know, failed because, you know, Republicans don't have either the votes or the presidency.

Also, abortion is the important issue for something like 5% of the electorate. 4 weeks from the election, Democrats have literally nothing else except a boutique issue for wine moms.

His previously admitted mental problems probably do not help so expecting him to be a warrior on the right is a bit far fetched. Personally, I think Dreher is simply looking for a hole to hide in and Hungary is one of the islands of stability and sanity in Euroland.

My guess is that he lives there a year or so unless things go seriously pear shaped in the US and then comes back complaining that Hungary is not the place he thought it was or some such.

Romcoms are cheap and great money makers. There was a big to do recently because Reese Witherspoon asked on Twitter where all the romcoms were, and she got a huge response.

They're feelgood little bits of sugar for a large section of the electorate, and it seems like that electorate is mostly women who use it as a bit of fantasy. Having it be two guys precludes them from using it that way, so they're not interested.

331 The Left has spent the last 80 years making the SCOTUS the 'one-stop shop" for left-leaning agendas.
Now, it appears all of that is going, going, gone. The main message of Dobbs was that 'the SCOTUS is not the dispenser of new "rights"', a message that the Left does not like and has rejected.
The proper path for these new "rights" is the Constitutional amendment process. The last Constitutional amendments were the 26th (18 yo vote) in 1971, unratified "Equal Rights Amendment" in 1972, unratified "DC Voting Rights" in 1978 and 27th (Congressional pay raise for next session) in 1992, all 30 or more years ago, so clearly they have liked the SCOTUS path a lot more.

My memory is if you remove the Big Blue shitholes from the calculation America has the same crime rate as suburban western Europe.

HINT: This little town has a lot of gun stores and churches, but only a few liquor stores. Might be some kinda connection there.

It is known. I have also wondered what the world's average temperature, as computed by the AGW crowd, would be if you removed all cities' temperature readings from the calculation. Knowing how much concrete creates heat sinks I bet it ups the average temperature . . . a lot.

371 Chester County became lame because it voted in J. Kane, K Muth, T. Kearney, etc. as State Senators and Rep. Chrissy Houlahan for Congress.

For years I thought the folks there were so much smarter (and 'richer') but they were still unable to look with detail at Philly and Delco and say, No, don't bring that nonsense here. (PS - There also had to be 'affordable housing' in some little alcoves of the county if DEI has taken hold.)

372 I can't imagine romcoms doing any better than the rest of comedy these days.

Jokes are verboten. New Soviet American does not laugh.

The big joke that was supposed to get all the laughs in the gay rom-com was "Straights are over, but they had a good run".

374 I guess somethings are too ghey even for the homos.

He specifically said he doesn't want conservative or even just non-liberal gays seeing his movie. The old "don't see our movie" (time passes) "Why didn't you see our movie?" gambit.

"Urban heat island" is the technical term.
