As Hurricane Ian Closes In On Florida, Don "Black Hole of Infinitely Warped Ignorance" LeMon Insists on Politicizing It

He's meteorologist and hurricane expert, according to his bio.

Michael Lowry
@MichaelRLowry

With 155 mph winds, Hurricane #Ian teetering on becoming only the fifth Category 5 hurricane to strike the mainland U.S. on record (Cat 5 starts at 157 mph). Whether it does or doesn't is of no consequence or comfort for communities in the path. Catastrophic impacts regardless.

He links this projection of the storm surges along the coasts of Florida. Note the frightening purple band in the middle of the west coast, around Bonita Beach -- 12 to 16 foot surges above the normal level of the ocean.

stormsurge.jpg

Ian is moving along the same track as Hurricane Charley did in 2004:

hurricanecharleytrack.jpg

Except Ian is much, much bigger than Charley:

Brooks Garner FOX 35
@BrooksWeather

5pm - New track of Hurricane Ian-- remarkable as it follows nearly the same track as Hurricane Charley in 2004. The difference? #Ian is a larger hurricane geographically, with much more rain and it's moving more slowly which means much more rain. 12"-30" possible.
@FOX35Orlando

Below, "FrogNews" hopes that Ian will do less damage by following Charley's path. Charley did a lot of damage, and he says things were rebuilt stronger, and maybe better able to resist hurricane damage this time around.

Frog Capital
@FrogNews

I hate 'silver linings' but charley leveled this area in 2004.
Pretty much everything they built back is really damn strong now... and this one is supposed to weaken more rapidly over land..

Charley also made landfall as a category 4 storm.

On the other hand, I don't know how much stronger you can rebuild things. I don't know how well things can be made to withstand a category 4/almost a category 5 hurricane, which is also moving very slowly to make sure you spend a lot of time in the wind and the rain and the flooding.

Charley, a smaller storm that moved quickly through central Florida, was "devastating" and took "forever" to recover from the storm damage:

devastationofcharley.jpg

Ian is a bigger circle than Charley, so its band of hurricane force winds is nearly three times bigger than Charley's. A lot more of Florida is going to be lashed by seriously-damaging winds.

I fear power might be out in some places for two weeks or more. It gets worse, I imagine, when power lines in down in so many places that you just don't have the crews to fix them in any reasonable time frame.

DeSantis told coastal residents in the immediate path of the hurricane that it is now too late to evacuate and that they should hunker down.

He said there are "nasty days ahead."

Gov. Ron DeSantis told Floridians in the path of Hurricane Ian that the time has passed to evacuate and residents should now "hunker down."

Ian is expected to make landfall in Charlotte County Wednesday as a Category 4 storm, with the highest risk areas ranging from Collier County to Sarasota County.

"If you are in any of those counties, it's no longer possible to safely evacuate. It's time to hunker down and prepare for this storm," he urged.

...

"This is going to be a nasty, nasty day, two days [...] So, this is going to be a rough stretch," DeSantis warned.

Stay high and dry, Florida Ace of Spaders.

The media, meanwhile, is really praying for massive damage and high fatality counts to take out Ron DeSantis. A McClatchy "reporter" put on a "grotesque" performance as he practically begged a FEMA official to say that Ron DeSantis was difficult to work with because he was So Partisan That He Was Putting Lives In Danger With His Don't Say Gay Extremism. The FEMA official, thankfully, would have none of that.

And this morning, despite this being one of the least-active hurricane seasons on record, Don "This isn't a demotion, it's a promotion, I swear" LeMon insisted on attempting to turn an emergency weather event into a sermon on global warning.

Once again, thankfully, the NOAA official refused to play ball with the darker, stupider, gayer, wrinklier Greta Thunberg.

That's not even the worst hackery the "new, neutral, serious news network" CNN offered about the hurricane and DeSantis today. Via Twitchy:

David Zaslav, get your luantic shitlib gonzo Democrat activist employees under control.

Update: Earlier, DeSantis dismissed Biden's refusal to call him as "pettiness" in the face of catastrophe.

22 I'm calling bullshit on all this and that Ian fizzles out to just another bad storm but nothing catastrophic. The news always breathlessly reports on how big and bad every storm is, but 90% of the time the storm fizzles as it reaches landfall. That's why there's so few C5s hitting the USA. Add in the extra incentive of glee at pain inflicted on FL, and you have unwarranted hysteria over what I predict will be just another storm.

77 I'm calling bullshit on all this and that Ian fizzles out to just another bad storm but nothing catastrophic.
Posted by: Elric Blade at September 28, 2022 12:10 PM (iFTx/)

I wouldn't go as far as that, but watching the Weather Channel earlier in the week did give me the feeling that they were deliberately overblowing this. They stopped just short of declaring it the worst hurricane in human history, even when it was several days out and still getting organized.

That said, a Cat 4 storm is still pretty bad, so I hope everyone in FL has done what they need to prepare.

86 I mentioned this before... It wouldn't surprise me to find out that NOAA has altered the criteria for the categorization of a hurricane (1 - 5) to make it seem like there's more "bad" hurricanes in any given season. Outfits like the Weather Channel tend to use their own classification system, based on "Science" (tm) to ramp up the fear and crisis potential. The feds just want to keep up.

For example; "TorCon" a term the Weather Channel uses to describe the conditions for tornado development. It's totally fake. Based on nothing but fear and the hope there will be one for the ratings.

130 I fear power might be out in some places for two weeks or more. It gets worse, I imagine, when power lines in down in so many places that you just don't have the crews to fix them in any reasonable time frame.

FWIW, when Andrew hit our family house in Coconut Grove in 1992 (my in-laws still owned it in those days), it had wind speeds of around 175 mph. We were on the northeast edge of the eye, normally the worst affected area of the storm, but Andrew was quirky, and the SW edge of the eye took the hardest hit, so Cutler Ridge, Kendall and even Homestead got absolutely leveled. Those houses down there (in the Homestead area) were cheaply built to start with and it was complete devastation. Gone. All that was left for miles were the concrete pads and the storm-proof safety rooms. Power took two weeks to be restored to our area, roofs took about a year to repair, but those folks in the Homestead area...I'm guessing they moved.

156 I had a foreman in Ohio who spent his last few years at the mill taking his vacation in FL. He was building a retirement house. Brought back pictures, reinforced concrete and cinder block, slightly bowed exterior walls going outwards, and radiused corners. Flat reinforced roof with drain scuppers and the best, pull down hurricane screens over the windows, like you see on stores in big cities. Pretty cool, just a little two bedroom.

I watched an interview with Prince Philip a few years ago, related to the anniversary of the end of WWII, as he was in active naval service on board ship. I was taken with his professional way of shutting down some of the most extremely stupid questions I had ever heard. One example, 'How did you feel when your ship was bombed, were you fearful?' His answer: 'We all had jobs to do, and we got on with it. There isn't time for introspection when you have a battle to fight.'

Rode out Typhoon Nauguri on Okinawa, and everyone was pretty much fine because almost every building is made of reinforced concrete. (One wooden shack blew down, and it was on all the news channels.) The island is essentially a mountain above sea level, which means that we didn't deal with a lot of storm surge, just some flooding and nasty waves. I'd rather repeat that experience than be in Florida right now.

I quit counting then but the rest of my trip, through TN, KY, IL, MO and into IA, non-stop groups of trucks heading southeast, some from as far away as the Dakotas. 202 77 I'm calling bullshit on all this and that Ian fizzles out to just another bad storm but nothing catastrophic.

Although driving back from Key West a few years ago I did see a lot of houses with concrete roofs. I guess that's designed to stay on in 150.

386 spade etymology:

"tool for digging," Old English spadu "spade," from Proto-Germanic *spadan (source also of Old Frisian spada "a spade," Middle Dutch spade "a sword," Old Saxon spado, Middle Low German spade, German Spaten), from PIE *spe-dh-(source also of Greek spathe "wooden blade, paddle"), which as a suffixed form has been grouped under a root *speh-, "with several extensions, denoting quite different implements" (Boutkan) but basically indicating "long, flat piece of wood" (source also of Old English spon "chip of wood, splinter," Old Norse spann "shingle, chip;" see spoon (n.)).

spada etymology

From Latin spatha, from Ancient Greek [complicated pronunciation guide omitted]. Doublet of spata. Means "sword." (I forgot to put that in on the first posting.)

spata in turn just means "blade." A doublet is when one word forks into two different words, and both remain in the language with slightly different meanings, like warden/guardian.

410 Shockingly little meaningful discussion about the hurricane on DU. Found this funny article at the Huffington Post:

Biden Maintains Ambitious Refugee Cap Despite Missing It Badly This Year The U.S. admitted less than a quarter of the refugees it could have in fiscal year 2022.

The White House announced Tuesday that it will allow up to 125,000 refugees into the United States for the 2023 fiscal year, the same lofty goal it set for this year ― despite being on track to accept less than a quarter of that number.

According to the latest State Department numbers, the U.S. has accepted fewer than 20,000 refugees, according to the latest count in August ― putting it on pace for another record low as the fiscal year ends Oct. 1. The U.S. admitted fewer than 8,000 refugees, the lowest number ever, during the 2021 fiscal year.

The nearest bunch of high dollar real estate to us which could get wrecked is Marco Island, and if it's 12 feet plus there, a whole lotta older houses and most all the businesses, all built right on the sand, will suffer flooding damage.

The clear issue with the theory is that the models built on it vastly overestimate experienced warming and have been consistently wrong in a large way for decades. Independent of the theorized effect we expect some degree of warming until the next ice age. Good statistics practice would either assign the impact at 5 to 10% of the typical estimate or conclude the impact is negligible(since the much smaller amount of warming may be due to other causes).

554 The "Insider" feed from my browser's homepage pulled up this doozy: "An off-duty Massachussetts National Guard member aggressively confronted a tour bus full of senior citizens thinking they were migrants" The article goes on to say that MNG member tailed the bus, thinking they were more migrants being sent to Mass. from Florida. The story was reported in the Cape Cod Times on Tuesday.

555 It's the storm surge. During Camille, the surge reached 33 feet in Biloxi. During Katrina, it reached 35 feet. The Mississippi Sound is very shallow out to the barrier islands, and a big chunk of that water wall wound up going inland and destroying pretty much everything in its path.

Camille wiped an entire apartment building off the face of the Earth. Since Katrina, Waveland, MS, is a fraction of a ghost of its former self. (Why people insist on living in areas like that is beyond my feeble ability to comprehend.)

559 This morning I wished Fox had hired a bunch of Mexican weather girls.

Do you remember the weatherwoman Of Central American Origin they did have, smart as a whip and hottern'n a firecracker? Poor thing, she got too interested in her actual field, and quit to go to Central Michigan and study meteorology. Chippies' gain.

561 I was always taught that spades are for digging, shovels are for shoveling. No edges on the business end of a shovel IIRC.
Posted by: Moron Robbie - Don't insist that I accept what you are when you can't accept what you are at September 28, 2022 12:58 PM (vYHuO)

It is a good move to put an edge on a shovel, though scoop shovels, those square point ones, and any shovel you are using for gravel don't need one.

What I learned is that the shovel has a crook-neck for leverage but a spade is mostly straight. Spades are used for cutting sod or cleaning up ditches. They also are easier to carry because they don't stick out

I loved digging ditches because it was fun to get the edges of the ditch just right, clean and straight.

I had a number of friends from the Cocoa Beach area go down for relief operations for Andrew. A ton of war stories about insanity and kindness.

One guy told be they got to a subdivision and there was nothing left but the toilets bolted to the pads, that was all you could see, everything else was gone.

Nothing they could do so they moved on.

All the power wires were gone, they were just surveying neighborhoods and doing triage trying to figure out where to start.

573 Go over to the Last Refuge(I know his article caused a kerfuffel a short while ago) and follow his commentary and recommendations as he has been through several of these.

Things might have been built back way gooder after Charley, but this storm is much, much slower - sustaining those high winds for 2 hrs is one thing, but for 10? In addition to the ground being soaked for so long. This could get really bad.

PRAYERS!!

575 He baldly, without evidence or logic, without scientific basis, asserts several times that storms are "intensifying" in the area. When, in fact, we've been in a very low period of hurricane activity with several that broke down into tropical storms that weakened as they reached land.

EV batteries cover the entire bottom of the car in the passenger section, it would be quite an operation to move them out. I was doing research on X-ray scans of cars and you can see them because of the density of the batteries.
