The Morning Report — 9/27/22

conservedbateslincolnproj.jpg

Good morning kids. Tuesday and first up, it looks like Hurricane Ian is about to or already has slammed into Cuba and the predicted path has it heading straight up Florida's Gulf Coast.

Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for all of Florida ahead of Hurricane Ian making landfall later in the week. The storm could grow into a Category 4 hurricane, with 140 mph winds, by late Tuesday above the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to bring coastal flooding, heavy rain and high winds to the Sunshine State.

Gov. DeSantis will be holding a 9 a.m. press conference at the State Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee.

If you are anywhere near the path of this thing, please take all necessary precautions to keep yourself safe and get the hell out of way as soon as you can. Now, on to the unnatural disasters caused by Democrats, Leftists and Socialists. Despite the litany of depredations being visited on us by a corrupt, illegitimate junta as well as violence inspired by and indeed fomented by said junta, there are still those with their head planted firmly up their posteriors with a spectacular view of their sigmoids. They refuse to see our rapid descent into what is shaping up to be a tyrannical police state, believing that at best, it's a few rotten apples that are the cause of all of it. Yet some of them seem to finally have the scales fall from their eyes. Or, if not falling away, then for sore there are quite a few that have been sufficiently loosened to let in a very unpleasant view of things.

Special Counsel John Durham continues to ignore the FBI’s malfeasance in the Crossfire Hurricane targeting of Donald Trump, a Friday court filing by prosecutors in the criminal case against Igor Danchenko confirms. While that approach may have been prudent and in the country’s best interests three and a half years ago, when then-Attorney General Bill Barr tasked Durham to investigate the origins of the Russia collusion hoax, it is no longer judicious.

The special counsel’s failure to appreciate this reality threatens the government’s case against Danchenko, but more significantly has spurred the Biden administration, the D.C. deep state, and partisan state officials to further weaponize the criminal justice system against their political enemies. . .

. . . Why then does Durham appear poised to refuse to reveal to the jury the real reason his predecessors ignored Danchenko’s apparent lies? Why also is Durham’s case against Danchenko only the third criminal case from his multi-year investigation, when evidence suggests several other players, either within the government or working with the government, engaged in potentially criminal activity? For that matter, why did Barr refuse to prosecute former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe for allegedly lying to investigators when he claimed he had not authorized a media leak about an investigation into the Clinton Foundation?

While some critics on the right frame Barr and Durham’s failure to prosecute more broadly as proof that their goal has always been to protect the establishment and cover up wrongdoing, an honest assessment of the former attorney general’s words and conduct suggests a different answer — one that was reasonable and prudent at the time but can no longer be justified . . .

. . . As AG, Barr also made clear that he would not take creative license with the federal criminal code “to gin up allegations of criminality by one’s political opponents based on the flimsiest of legal theories.” Using the criminal justice system for partisan political ends “is not a good development” and “is not good for our political life. And “the only way to stop this vicious cycle, the only way to break away from a dual system of justice, is to make sure that we scrupulously apply the single and proper standard of justice for everybody,” Barr stressed, promising justice “will not be a tit-for-tat exercise" . . .

. . . But Barr and Durham’s high-minded approach to prosecutorial discretion did not stop the vicious cycle. On the contrary, the tepid approach to prosecuting those who abuse government power to target political enemies emboldened the DOJ, FBI, and intelligence community’s intrusion into politics and its interference in elections.

I am a huge admirer of Margot Cleveland. Over the past several years, she has done yeoman's work in examining every aspect of the Russia Collusion hoax as well as the Mueller "probe" and the multiple shampeachments against Trump. She has a well-deserved reputation of being an outstanding lawyer, and while that has made her granular reportage on these topics invaluable, including this extensive essay, she is nevertheless blind to the institutional corruption of a criminal justice system and government that she and many like her desperately want to believe can be saved. The passage I highlighted perfectly illustrates that conflict.

Barr is a complete hack. If his anger over Trump being allowed to have a special master in the wake of the FBI's Gestapo raid on Mar-a-Lago doesn't convince you, his decades long tenure within the highest echelons of national law enforcement should. He was the nation's top cop at the time of Ruby Ridge and actually did pro-bono work for government assassin with a badge Lon Horiuchi. Randy Weaver was being strong-armed by the Bureau to become a government informer on "white separatists" they were targeting. He refused. His wife and son wound up shot to death and he was tarred as an anti-government Nazi.

Gee, doesn't all this sound vaguely familiar? From the Whitmer kidnapping plot to the J6 "rioters," the vast majority of whom are turning out to be government shills and stooges who were fomenting the "rioting" while those who were allowed in to the Capitol did nothing more than gawk at the drapery. Some insurrection. Oh, but there were deaths. Ashli Babbitt assassinated by Capitol cop Michael Byrd and Roseanne Boyland, beaten to death by security forces comprised of cops and other Feds. As for police officer Brian Sicknick, sick bastard cum Congressman Mondaire Jones is still hawking the blood libel that he was beaten to death with a fire extinguisher by "white supremacist insurrectionists" as opposed to dying hours later from a heart attack.

Pro-tip to Mondaire Jones and the rest of the Left: if you're going to have an insurrection, you need to have actual insurrectionists. No matter, I guess. They just make them up out of thin air.

Psaki-psircling back to the scales that bitterly cling to Margot Cleveland's eyes, while it is painful in the extreme to witness what is going on and desperately hope that the notion that what you always believed in is somehow salvageable, there has to come a point where you realize that that is impossible. Everything we have witnessed these past few years and especially ramping up since Sponge-Brain Shits-Pants was installed as the Ober-Groping-Furor of the Kalorama Kontrollers just over a year and a half ago confirms it. But pining over what was lost in the vain belief that it will return is no longer an option. But the first thing that must be done is to recognize and admit that it's gone.

With that in mind, Michael Anton hits nail on head.

What does fidelity to our founding principles require today? Let me begin to answer that question with a quote—perhaps a familiar quote to some or most of you. But it’s apt, and there’s always a chance some of you haven’t heard it, and/or that others can use a refresher.

The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected. Even when the revolutionist might himself repent of his revolution, the traditionalist is already defending it as part of his tradition. Thus we have two great types—the advanced person who rushes us into ruin, and the retrospective person who admires the ruins. He admires them especially by moonlight, not to say moonshine. Each new blunder of the progressive or prig becomes instantly a legend of immemorial antiquity for the snob. This is called the balance, or mutual check, in our Constitution.

Those words were spoken by G.K. Chesterton, a Brit, in 1924. He was speaking of the British Constitution, not ours. But the words strike me as especially apt to our situation.

What have our conservatives conserved? But before we answer that—hint: almost nothing—let’s first ask: what were they supposed to conserve? What do they say they are conserving in all those fundraising letters they send out that have been netting them hundreds of millions per year for most of my lifetime? . . .

. . . Fourth—and certainly not least—is the American regime itself. Have we conserved that? Does it function as it was designed to do? As a political scientist, and as a historian of sorts before that, I find the question laughable. If any of you want to make the case that we still live in the founders’ regime, go ahead.

Meanwhile, I will tell you some of what I see. A giant, unaccountable, unelected fourth branch of government that does what it wants without input or supervision from the people, and that usurps executive, legislative, and judicial power. Rights are routinely trampled. Two-track justice—one standard for friends of the regime, another for its enemies—is now the norm. Just last week a man killed with his car a teenager for the “crime” of being Republican. He’s already out on bail. Meanwhile there are still dozens of January 6 protesters in pretrial detention for ridiculous noncrimes such as “parading. . .”

. . . For “conservatives,” the most heroic act of the 20th century was not D-Day or the moon landing but William F. Buckley, Jr. purging the Birchers. Hence, they’re always on the lookout for more purges. Whole careers and institutions are now made of this. Think of the Bulwark and the Dispatch—of Bill and Steve and Jonah and David and Kevin. All of these “conservatives” are now character assassins out to destroy the lives of anyone even a click to their right, many their former friends.

One thing I’ve noticed is that conservatives really get mad when you point out that people who treat you like enemies are, in fact, your enemies. Finally, the conservatives find a backbone, and righteous indignation! To refer to someone libeling you, trying to cancel you, calling for your “extirpation” and even assassination as an “enemy”? How dare you! Civility in politics above all else! . .

. . . Anyway, either they’re in on it, or they’re motivated by a dedication to “principle” so perverse as to be self-negating. It is plausible—and we may say the explanation fits the observable facts—that the conservatives are the way they are because they have completely internalized the narrative of the Left.

They believe that America is irredeemably evil and racist. They believe that they are horrible people, burdened with a kind of original sin—not the one in the Bible but rather one cooked up by 20th-century academic leftists and intellectuals. They believe that “the white race is the cancer of human history.” And so they believe that they deserve to lose, and even to die. . .

. . . Well, these days if you even suggest that the United States might be trending in a bad direction, here come the conservative enforcers. It’s not merely that they think our constitutional system is, or ought to be, sacrosanct. On that, I agree with them.

It’s that they believe—against the Founders, and against all experience of history—that once implemented, it can never be lost. They defend every perversion, distortion, corruption, and topsy-turvy reinterpretation of that system as if it were the system itself.

Read the whole thing (and props to Anton for a Godfather reference as well). So, what is to be done? In the face of a tyranny that is growing more desperate and violent almost by the day, the first thing that is required is to open your eyes and see things the way they are and not how you wish they were.

Get the hell out of that river in Egypt.

But when committed ideologues embed in the Social Security Administration, suddenly one finds the risk exists that Wrong-Think means you can't get that income. Or buy those drugs, or get a doctor or hospital to take care of you.

These risks are real, and Democrats will use the Administrative State to terrorize people. There is no way to prevent them from doing that, either, except to end the Administrative State.

26 One thing is blindingly clear and JJ points it out all the time. We are in the first phase of a civil war and is being waged through the department of Justice and lawfare in sympathetic blue districts. I think the return fire from Abbott and DeSantis with sending up illegals to the blue States is the model for how to fight this phase of the civil war. Simply waiting for elections to correct this imbalance is not going to work. It's going to take creative conservative leaders who are willing to fight on the ground in the world we live in.

27 Not just an US problem:
Car theft in London has effectively been decriminalized, with just 277 out of 55,000 offences being solved by Scotland Yard, a 0.5% success rate.

Back in 2015, the head of the National Police Chiefs’ Council said that due to a lack of resources, officers would be unable to attend some burglaries. In 2018, it was revealed that two thirds of burglaries are not even investigated.

Despite many crimes going unsolved, there are still plenty of resources available to prosecute people for saying offensive things or making edgy social media posts.

Back in June, a man was jailed for 20 weeks for the ‘crime’ of posting offensive George Floyd memes in private WhatsApp and Facebook group chats.

In 2017, it was reported that British police had arrested 3,395 people for ‘offensive online comments’ in the space of a year.

Prayers to those in Florida and encouragement to leave and come north if there's even a question of safety. 56 Special Counsel John Durham continues to ignore the FBI’s malfeasance in the Crossfire Hurricane targeting of Donald Trump, a Friday court filing by prosecutors in the criminal case against Igor Danchenko confirms. While that approach may have been prudent and in the country’s best interests three and a half years ago, when then-Attorney General Bill Barr tasked Durham to investigate the origins of the Russia collusion hoax, it is no longer judicious.
+++++
That's an odd take. Ignoring malfeasance - malfeasance that essentially became a coup attempt - can be "prudent" in the moment, but magically becomes imprudent *after* the event has passed? How does that work? While they're actively violating orders in the interests of subverting a president, one must not interfere but later on, when they're mopping up, interference is suddenly neccessary?

57 Car theft in London has effectively been decriminalized, with just 277 out of 55,000 offences being solved by Scotland Yard, a 0.5% success rate.
--------------------
I saw a story yesterday about a higher-end London department store who had hired private security to stop shoplifting and sue the crims in civil court because the cops are refusing to arrest the shoplifters. The article didn't say anything about the Crown Prosecution Service [the D.A.s] ignoring crime like with Soros' D.A.s but...

Kit Malthouse, the Education Secretary -- who at the time was policing minister -- wrote to every chief constable in September 2020 ordering them to stop effectively decriminalising thefts under £200 and that they “can and should” prosecute thieves who steal low-value items.

BTW, the 'Crown' is used in the UK [Oz, NZ & Canada] the way you use the 'People'.

58 Israel Steps up to the Plate

February 15, 2022

The EastMed pipeline has been in the works for more than a decade. The Israel-Greece-Cyprus project — joined by Bulgaria, Hungary, North Macedonia, Romania and Serbia — has long been seen as a way to diversify natural gas supplies to Europe.

The Turkish government has always insisted that Israeli gas can only be sold to Europe through Turkey.

"The Americans do not want the pipeline because Ankara might 'get angry.'" — Theofrastos Andreopoulos, defense analyst, defensenet.gr.

The DIE ain't helping, but institutional timidity and lack of accountability are probably the more severe problems.

The difference in approach between NASA and its contractors and SpaceX is on full display. NASA spends years in simulation, trying to work out all the bugs they can before they start physical testing. They want fewer explosions of rockets and more successful exercises. SpaceX spends relatively little time in simulation and blow up a lot more rockets. Try it out, have it detonate, examine the telemetry, fix the bugs that caused the explosion, try again. And again. And again. Build them, test them, fix the problems, test again - and do it quickly.

This is why before test launches, SpaceX will often say upfront that they expect failure, but they want the data.

____________

I saw an article the other day that discussed the twin solid rocket boosters attached to that thing. They're "stacked" in that the various segments that make up each booster is stacked on top of the bottom one. They've been like that for almost 2 years. NASA's own safety guidelines say after a year they have to be replaced because of possible sagging in the joints that could lead to "issues."

NASA has chosen to ignore their own safety guidelines.

They did that when the space shuttle Challenger was launched too.

The only way we are going back to the moon is if private companies do it, no way NASA has that capability any longer. They have had some serious brain drain over the last two decades and there just isn't enough talent left to make a successful manned moon shot unless some serious changes are made at the agency.

174 The Journal of the American Medical Association, an international peer-reviewed general medical journal published since 1993,

******

Minor quibble (and the misstatement is in the original linked article, not JJ's commentary), but the Journal of the AMA parent journal was first published in the 1880's. Various offshoots or derivative specialty journals of the AMA have popped up over the years. The referenced article actually appeared in JAMA-Pediatrics, a publication of the AMA that has been in existence (under various names) since around 1913.

This is probably irrelevant apart from the notion that the AMA is a hidebound, dinosaur of an organization whose prestige and influence have dwindled over the last few decades.

I am repeating myself, but with any lay press article about an earth shattering breakthrough, it pays to bring a healthy dose of skepticism to your analysis. It was. About half the people at Johnson Space Center fought tooth and nail against giving up total NASA veto power of design and safety of the ISS Commercial Crew contractors, SpaceX and Boeing. I was among those who believed it was time for NASA to let commercial folks do the job as they saw best.

In the early 2000's I believed NASA should get out of the rocket and spacecraft design and operations business, and return to what is was up to 1957, a research agency. It was then NACA: National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. HQ and most activities were at Langley, VA.

>>Trump was never a lunatic.

Right? I was never a fan of Trump, the celebrity since the 80's. But he'd been in the public eye for 30+ years, including a hit tv show, before running. That's long enough to notice he has his own way of talking, his hyperbole but ability to back it up with accomplishment ("I'm gonna have the best tv show, just the best" -> top rated show), etc.

People like Cooke choose to not understand Trump, choose to misinterpret his style of promotion as lies.

They're like Lefties who absolutely refuse to learn anything about guns because not knowing what 'the thing that goes up' is is a badge of honor and enables them to avoid a serious conversation - you can never get past the initial take to find the truth and common ground. "Trump is crazy" means you never progress to discussing his agenda and accomplishments, which is the point, isn't it?

228 It’s not merely that they think our constitutional system is, or ought to be, sacrosanct. On that, I agree with them.

I don't.

The Divinely inspired ideals of our founding as described in the Declaration of Independence (which is a clear vow to God about the purpose of this nation) are sacrosanct.

The Constitution and the system it describes (to the extent that even applies to the DC abomination) is nothing more than a means to the end of preserving the God-given Rights of those of us who acknowledge God-given Rights. It isn't even our first attempt at doing so. Having failed, mainly in tolerating those who do not acknowledge God-given Rights, it is due for the "alter or abolish" procedure mentioned in the DoI.

Could that be very similar to the original Constitution or some amended version? Sure. But it isn't going to work with the current federal "work"force, nor letting all the people who insist on voting to support or preserve progressive madness continue to vote.

The bivalent vaccines approved by the FDA (both Moderna and Pfizer) have (as the name would imply) two components, with slightly different mRNA sequences. One is based on the original strain from 2019 and the other is based on the Omicron. The stated purpose is to provide a broader spectrum of COVID protection, but this strategy, similar in some ways to the annual influenza vaccine looks backward in time and is less than ideal for expected new variants.

292 The reason I no longer claim the "conservative" label is because I believe the time for those ideas has passed. 20 years ago, I was a conservative, and I thought application of Conservative values could work. I now believe it is far too late for that.

example - Public Education. A Conservative approach is to demand school reform; but I believe that would be a huge waste of time and money, and would fail. I believe that Public Education needs to be completely demolished in its current form, and replaced by something else. I'm not even sure what that replacement will look like; doesn't matter to me. The destruction of the current system is what matters, and is what must come before anything else.

Of course not. There's no way to achieve that. You can obfuscate ownership (Bitcoin does this), but you cannot fully divorce ownership because to maintain access to what's yours, you have to prove who you are. Authentication is central to management, and so anonymity is impossible. a Bitcoin-style approach where you own an anonymous token and can pass the token around is probably the closest you can get to divorcing ownership from identity, but even that has pitfalls. No government agency (or pseudo-government agency) is going to have anonymity as a part of the scheme because anonymity is one of the problems they're trying to solve so they certainly aren't going to put a lot of technical effort into that challenge.

Political violence by the left has been established as an acceptable tactic. This is demonstrated by the number of people who've perpetrated criminal violence against the right currently in jail vs those on the right who visited the Capitol on 1/6.

The instruments being used by the left won't simply become instruments of the right if different people are elected to congress or the presidency. They demonstrated they went rouge before Trump when nominal Republicans controlled the government for two years.

Not that the GOP didn't have anything to do with that. They did, and thus are part of the problem.

Isn't that the point of digital currency -- it is accessible for all sorts of analysis and controls?

Can't wait 'till they share how they plan on exerting limits on how/when you can spend your digital currency. The UK listed that as a requirement of theirs -- they want the ability to limit and/or prevent it being spent on things that they don't want (guns? sugary drinks? no more that your acceptable limit for meat?). The possibilities are limitless once they have the ability to exert their will and track your money.

Exit question: Will it still be yours if someone else can decide how/when it is spent?

Eh... hard to characterize them by today's standards. They really were living in a time of insane disparity of wealth. They were populists for land reform (redistribution.) You could call them as more hard core than Occupy since they actually had a set of goals and said openly what they wanted to do (redistribute land and establish free grain for the poor in Rome.) They were HATED by the conservatives at the time. They also get the nod for introducing mob violence into Roman politics. I do not blame them for that specifically because it is not like there was a massive push back from everyone to restore the norms. They were the symptom, not the rot itself.

It's actually based in reality. If you have 2.2 people working for every recipient the math works. That's why the Bureau of Labor statistics key measure of percentage of Americans working is so important. It fell consistently for nearly 20 years, but moved upward under Trump. Until the pandemic.

You all may laugh at the "bunny hop", what method of locomotion the Moonwalker adopted. But I'm serious, it has been proven, like with math and shit, that that bunny hop was the most efficient means of locomotion on the Moon for humans, given the constraints of the space suits and what-not. You can look it up. NASA, of the old school, what actually knew what they wuz talkin' 'bout, figured that out.

The Moonwalkers just intuited that, you know quickly figured it out.

The Moonwalkers had some pratfalls, and you can search on that and see the Moonwalkers falling down on their asses. It's funny. But they wuz boldly goin'.

*I* remember that. When W won re-election, he spent his political capital/popularity from the win to try and get a portion of SS (10% IIRC) able to be moved into private accounts, that could be passed onto heirs.

The Donks were obviously against it, but the Repubs completely bailed and sabotaged it, and it never came to fruition. If nothing else, W did good in that, and was back-stabbed by his own cowardly party.
