Top Story

  • Intel's 13900K has a PassMark score. (WCCFTech)

PassMark - the benchmark used on CPUBenchmark.net - isn't a perfect benchmark, since there's no perfect benchmark except running your own application on the target hardware. But I've found it to map very closely to the stuff I run, so it's the one I pay attention to.

    Score is 4833 single-threaded and 54,433 multi-threaded. That's around the same multi-threaded score as the 24 core Threadripper 3960X, which uses 280W.

On the other hand, the 3960X came out nearly three years ago, the 13900K uses up to 350W itself if you take off the limits, and the 13900K is also a 24 core CPU.

On the third hand, the 13900K is 80% faster on single-threaded tasks on its Performance cores; it's the Efficiency cores that drag the overall score down.

Still, if the difference between the cores doesn't matter to you, you're getting a workstation-class CPU from a couple of years ago in a standard desktop.

Tech News

  • Meanwhile the 7950X has been pushed to 6.5GHz on all cores. (WCCFTech)

On liquid nitrogen, yes, so this is probably not something you'll be doing yourself. And it set some benchmark records, but again, not something you'll see direct benefits from.

What is interesting though is that it only used 270W to do it - something that high-end Intel desktop chips can do without overclocking at all.

I mean, that's still a lot, but it suggests that a good water cooler should be able to support a respectable all-core overclock on this beastie.

  • Get3D generates 3D models from images. (GitHub)

It's another of the recent wave of AI-based image generation tools, though it takes a slightly different tack, analysing sets of images and trying to build a consistent 3D model from them. The 2D tools - like Midjourney, which I've been playing with - don't actually have that kind of model of the shape of things, and will simply forget that a person's arms should be roughly the same length, for example, and end with hands.

Since Midjourney (and similar tools) can take an image as reference, you could run the training data through Get3D, generate meshes, render them out into a scene, and then play that scene into the 2D generator to get a final product with consistent geometry, in that people don't suddenly have two heads.

  • The new wave of JavaScript web frameworks and why they should all burn. (Front End Mastery)

"Inspired by PHP" is a label very much akin to "LD 50 1ng/kg".

  • Nobody wants plant-based meat. (The Guardian)

A vegan friend mentioned that she tried these products a couple of times and couldn't stand the taste. If you you're not vegan or vegetarian, traditionally plant-based meat - the kind where you have a cow eat the grass for you - is just as healthy and a lot cheaper.

  • NASA's test launch for the Artemis Moon rocket has been scrubbed for the third time in a row. (CNN)

    Unexpectedly.

  • People can't even be bothered to steal Amazon's Rings of Power series. (TorrentFreak)

I might check it out at some point. They actually did a pretty good job on Good Omens, and I have a Prime subscription for the free delivery (a big deal now that I'm 300 miles by road from the nearest warehouse).

  • Meanwhile I'm watching Kumo Desu Ga, Nani Ka? a.k.a So I'm a Spider, So What?

It's the usual power-trip wish-fulfilment story of a teenage shut-in transported to a world that works like a computer game where they get untold power, except that first, the main character is a girl - common in early "isekai" stories, less so now - and second, in the fantasy world, she's a spider.

It works because being a spider, even a magical spider in a magical world, is pretty awful, and because she survives through intelligence and determination, not through luck or being handed the world on a plate.

I hesitated to watch this one because I'd already read a thousand pages of the manga and I knew the anime took a different approach to the story. But not to worry, while the approach is different, the story itself is intact.

Some things that take a long time to surface in the manga are apparent right away in the anime, but that turns out not to spoil things because even then you still don't know everything that's going on. My guess based on those thousand pages turned out to be dead wrong.

18 I'm up early, with a little day trip planned for today. Anyway, I received a small multiband radio yesterday, kind of a cheapo, but good enough. It has a rechargeable battery, and the barely decipherable instructions recommended a full six hour charge. I was scared to leave it unattended charging because if a $70K EV can burst into flames, a cheap radio made by Godless commies sure can. Thing finally got to full charge, and everything works. Even received a little shortwave. It also takes AAAs so a pack of those goes in the stash with the radio.

I'm up early to work out, but I doubt I'll go. As it is I have few mornings where I can just relax, and Sunday *should* be one of them. Plus I need to wash the car on the way to the grocery; and washing a car in this climate in September, even early in the morning, is a workout in itself.

Oops. That's getting unpleasantly close to me. I'd better start following the weathercasts more closely.

Last night Miss Linda and I watched the 2018 comedy Game Night w/ Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams. It was a delight -- an H'wood film with decent lighting, high energy, and a script laden with funny dialog. Bateman is a master at the "I'm the only one who knows what's going on here, and even I'm confused" shtick. Or maybe you'd call it the "I'm the only sane one here" routine -- both honed during his time on Arrested Development. This film is sheer fun.

Yeah, I'd hoped we'd be spared any brushes this year, let alone direct hits. Notsothoreau and NaCly Dog are giving me some important advice about it. Yes, I know the summer heat there can be bad; there's humidity. But can it be worse than this swamp? In any case there is spring and fall there, and winter. And yes, I know about tornadoes. You don't get as much warning of them as you do hurricanes; but the tornadoes don't affect such a wide area, and you don't have to worry about storm surge and rain flooding.

I like how Hannity refers to it as "The Free State of Florida." But no -- I am NOT acclimated to this climate. I've been immured here for many years, and even grew up here. But I don't think there is any way you can truly adjust to this foulness. Beach and water, to me = hurricane danger.

86 I don't understand why people are so freaked out by hurricanes. Any relatively intelligent person can deal with all of the dangers by just some minor preparation and evacuating while there is time and living away from the immediate coast or places that have issues with drainage.

Statistically speaking, there is an extremely low probability of you suffering any structural damage. The cost of hurricane insurance is a big drawback but living in Florida has a lot of economic advantages, you have to take the bad with the good.

It's easy to blame the media in hyping all the drama but there seems to be some deep seated need for people to get all freaked out about stupid shit.

Driving your car around town is probably the most dangerous thing you can do , taking a shower has a lot of risks. Dismissing Florida as too dangerous because of hurricanes is silly.

Fall weather hit Michigan last week. Nice and cool but sunny. Clouds rolled in yesterday, but apart from some drizzle in the morning, game day in East Lansing wasn't unpleasant (well, except for the football team).

Still, when you're sitting with 400 alumni bandos, the disappointment is mixed with nostalgia. "Gosh, this team is terrible. Reminds me of Perles in 91."

My big takeaway is that I've allowed my musicianship to atrophy to an unacceptable level. I need to do some aggressive practice because I should have to reach to hit middle C.

This is a big reason why young people kill themselves - they screw up, it goes viral, and that's it. They don't know how to bounce back and society tells them that they can't. No apology is every accepted by the digital lynch mob when it comes for you.

This is why woke entertainment fails because people do not act like that. In real life, Mary Sue does not exist. Everyone has a weakness, and I think it's interesting how in the old films and books, heroes often got badly beaten because no person is infallible.

Good points all, but that is not the devices fault per se. They are working with the age they have the most experience with. They are trusting the robustness of a system that seems ephemeral to us. I wonder how high the collective blood pressure rose when that center in Tenn got blown up (did not hear much about it) and cell service was completely down for three days. To me, It was like being a teenager, to them it must have been profoundly disconcerting. I had a guy, 18, whose cell phone went on the blink. My eldest daughter (43) and I were explaining this to her girl.
When we were in high school, if we wanted to pass around a mean photo of someone, we had to take the picture, get it developed, have copies made and hand them out personally.
As well as slam books, which had to be written and delivered by hand.
Compared to point, click, send.

We emphasize constantly that the Internet is forever.

I'd say it was just before Covid 19 hit. They knew what they wanted to do. IIRC, Hillary even mentioned in late 18 that there could be a global pandemic and Trump would fumble the response. EVERYTHING stemmed from that. Even then, that is not the beginning. Nov 2016. That is when we defied/surprised them in such a way that everything had to be destroyed.

Yes, this actually came up. We were talking about some of the crazy crap we did, and commented that now, it would be instantly in a cloud somewhere, whereas back in the day, you had the take the photo and outrun the people who saw you do it.

If they were nice, they'd just take the film and expose it. If not, you'd need a new camera.

That sounds cruel, but what it did was impose costs on both sides of the equation. Now, you can ruin people and make it a fun and profitable career.

They change when the Party's needs change. "Safe, legal and rare" was necessary to gull the moderates, but now "shout your abortion" is the rule because there are no moderates, only good people and fascists.

As Scott Adams likes to say, fear is the best persuader, but it only works if it's credible. If people can defy you, the fear collapses and the resentment it causes can morph into open defiance.

Hence the present moment.

179 I heard a heartbreaking comment from a comrade: "Being an upstanding human in this system makes you a target."

Everything has been inverted. Courage and independence are now feared and loathed. Compliance to authority and the idols of the marketplace at whatever cost of liberty and self-respect is seen as virtue.

Posted by: Ordinary American at September 25, 2022 08:19 AM (H8QX8)

180 So this has been bothering me all week: the difference between "fear" and "strength" in policy and diplomacy.

A government that is confident of its popularity and knows that its policies are working does not resort to threats or weaponizing law enforcement. Only governments that fear popular discontent do this. Because governments depend on legitimacy to rule, it is a very risky strategy, because the more one violates long-standing precedent, the less legitimacy one has. At that point, brute strength and intimidation are all that is left, and these are prone to sudden collapses.

However, what is true of representative governments is not true of foreign policy. When a government announces a full or partial mobilization, that is a time-honored sign of resolution. Depending on the strategic situation, they may be reinforcing a strong hand or trying to save a weak one, but that is a secondary consideration to the FACT that mobilization indicates a willingness to escalate hostilities.

History shows us that mobilizations are almost never a bluff and this is because they impose severe hardships on the nation undertaking them.

185 During the lead-up to the Six-Day War, it became clear that Israel could not remain mobilized for long without crippling her economy. The Arabs knew this, and so their goal was to draw out the tension until Israel capitulated to their demands or had to release forces back to civilian work, which would militarily weaken them.

The Israeli solution was a pre-emptive attack. The weakness or strength of their position is a secondary consideration to the fact that mobilization was an irreversible step.

229 Another interesting article is No Pasarian! a very old column gets republished and gets flagged as a hate speech but of course is pure fact but not in the new narrative.

233 So, I'm on my second cup of coffee, once again wondering why JJ hasn't posted the Morning Report yet. Oh, right, Sunday.

Still, shouldn't there have been a post before the book thread?

well, not my blog, not my monkeypox

Good morning.

I'm not an Iranian woman but I'm ppprrrreeeetttyy sure they would find it repulsive how AOC & her ilk are hijacking their struggle against a murderous dictatorship to solicit sympathy for American women who have to drive several hours to abort their children.

Ocasio-Cortez:

Solidarity with the courageous women and allies in Iran protesting for their freedom. Mahsa Amini was senselessly murdered by the same patriarchal and autocratic forces repressing women the world over. The right to choose belongs to us all, from hijabs to reproductive care.

235 You have to realize something.

Most media are nothing but propaganda machines, spreading an agenda.

Did you know that Bill Gates has donated $319 million to different media outlets?

And you wonder why the media is promoting eating crickets and bugs...

240 The honesty in this interview is amazing and refreshing. I miss Christopher Reeve. He was great in one of my all-time favorite movies, Somewhere in Time with Jane Seymour.

CHRISTOPHER REEVE was born on this day, 1952. Here he is giving his frank opinion on working with Marlon Brando on SUPERMAN (197. He wasn't Brando's biggest fan.

241 THE PRINCESS BRIDE was released in the US 35 years ago today. Actors Cary Elwes & Mandy Patinkin practised the art of fencing for 3 weeks, both left & right-handed. This allowed them to perform all the action in this scene, minus the somersaults.

244 Some interesting things in this article I did not know about Shawshank Redemption.

It's 28 years today that the classic movie was released, and we have the behind the scenes story by way of fascinating, fun facts [ . . . ]

Also, on the parole forms, we see a picture of a young Red. How he looked when he was locked up. Young Red in the picture is played by Alfonso Freeman, Morgan's son.

Alfonso Freeman also has a cameo in the film when Andy first arrives in Shawshank - he's one of the inmates shouting, "Fresh fish! Fresh fish!"
