The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

It's just play money now. There is a headlong rush by every politician to buy votes with our descendants' money, and for a long time it was a rational, if horrid and self-serving, plan. But at a certain point the sheer weight of debt will overwhelm even the most vibrant economy, and we reached that point several years ago. Well, unless you accept the sheer, unadulterated stupidity and innumeracy of "Modern Monetary Theory," which is nothing more than kicking the can down the road, but on a grand scale. Unfortunately some of our elite, brilliant thinkers in government accept that nonsense (Alexandria Donkey-Chompers and Bernie "Champagne Socialist" Sanders come to mind), or simply admit it, because the rest of the yahoos in congress behave as if they believe it wholeheartedly.

Biden student loan forgiveness will cost $400 billion over 10 years, CBO estimates

In a letter to Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) and Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), the senior Republicans on the Senate and House education committees, Phillip Swagel, the director of the CBO, estimated that the student loan plan announced by the Biden administration last month will cost about $400 billion but that the estimate was "highly uncertain."

The CBO also estimated that the administration's decision to extend the pause on loan repayment through the end of the year will cost the government $20 billion.

Oh good, the estimate is "highly uncertain." For anyone not paying attention, that means that the true cost will be double or triple what was estimated. But it's just play money now, because there is no way that our country can make a significant dent in our debt, much less pay it off. It is now 150% of GDP, and interest payments on that debt are based on ridiculously low interest rates. And has anyone noticed that those rates are rising and will continue to rise for the foreseeable future?

So what's the solution? There isn't one.

Multi-trillion dollar debt is baked into the cake. We are going to find out at what level of debt a sovereign nation collapses under the weight of all of those interest payments. Is it next year or five years or 10 years from now? Who knows...certainly not the geniuses in congress. They will continue to spend and continue to buy votes and continue to lie to their constituents about their fiscal restraint. Hell, my Democrat U.S. representative claims in his campaign ads that he fights to lower taxes!

This is a generational issue, and we will all be dead before it is resolved. Could a fiscal conservative begin to repair the damage? Sure...hypothetically. And easing government control on commerce will certainly help, as we saw with President Trump. But government programs will need to be cut, and cut hard, and at best a president with the desire to do the cutting will have two years before the midterms destroy his majority in congress, and that is assuming that congress will even go along with those cuts!

Don't hold your breath!

13 Even worse, because we have been in the regime of Baseline budgeting for many years now, every single new expenditure becomes part of the new Baseline.

For instance, Obozo's so-called stimulus of a trillion dollars is now spent again every single year.

Yes, you read that right. It becomes part of The New Normal every single year.

So our unfunded liabilities go into the hundreds of trillions of dollars. They are deliberately destroying the world monetary system.

15 Multi-trillion dollar debt is baked into the cake. We are going to find out at what level of debt a sovereign nation collapses under the weight of all of those interest payments.

It's even more dire than that. China's debt is even worse than ours, to the extent that they're now pulling back on the Belt and Road lunacy. If every major industrialized nation goes broke simultaneously, I suspect there's going to be a run on face colanders.

This is a generational issue, and we will all be dead before it is resolved. Could a fiscal conservative begin to repair the damage? Sure...hypothetically.

Our grandchildren will damn us, and they'll be right.

17 ... Phillip Swagel, the director of the CBO, estimated that the student loan plan announced by the Biden administration last month will cost about $400 billion but that the estimate was "highly uncertain."
++++
It's uncertain but not inconceivable or irrational when we're talking about doing the right thing. Some perspective is called for. This year, the US has spent about $60 billion - both in cash and in kind - to support the efforts of Ukraine against the Russian invasion. This is *more* than we're talking about spending on student loan aid in terms of annual averages.

I bring this up to offer perspective on dollar amounts. For additional perspective, the total funding of the Federal Department of Education this year is about $190 billion.

Student loan forgiveness will cost less than intervention in Ukraine as an annual average, and that average represents only around 10% of Department of Education funding. This is a fairly small amount of money to do a tremendous amount of good. That it is so controversial is evidence of the MAGA crowd's hatred of students and student achievement and desire to maintain a status quo preferred by professional-class white men.

Don't bet on that, CBD. It's a generational issue if the debt is going to be paid, and barring major or catastrophic changes.

But if that debt is not going to be paid - and we are approaching or are at (if you know for sure, you're going to be filthy stinking rich) the point where it *cannot* be paid back. If it's not going to be paid, then it is not a generational question at all, and the resolution may happen at any time.

The political will won't develop until people demand that, but that would be the more immediate next step in the solution.

An absolute cap on federal spending with real punishment for politicians that go beyond it. Jail time. A lot of jail time. They can vote for it, but they spend the next 30 years in a maximum security prison with no chance for parole.

So, the first part is never, ever going to happen. The second part will also never, ever happen. There is no political solution to the debt. There is only crisis.

91 A few years ago a study showed more than 50% of the public receives a govt check. It’s not just welfare, that includes SS, federal employee pensions, military members, etc.

As I said earlier, if I could have pulled out of SS, I would have. My pension is something I earned, but I would also have taken that money out if I'd had the option and invested it myself at the time. The military is one of the few legitimate governmental functions, as mandated in the Constitution.

You did distinguish them, but many will still act as if they're all the same.

Posted by: Archimedes at September 27, 2022 11:21 AM (ayzS/)

92 My understanding of MMT is it doesn't work because of inflation. BUT they claim they can tighten to control the inflation, as they may be doing now ... not just with interest rates, but with QT (opposite of QE) ... pulling money out.

And this may be why Rand Paul wants to audit the fed. imo they do not have to balance their books, and those trillions "on their books" will stay there forever. No interest is paid, it (almost) all goes back to the government.

Not sure of the mechanics, but they seem to be throttling the masses, so they can't spend, they are broke. But we have to have a real economy (producing real things) or we just enrich China until ? the USD is broken.

But that looks deliberate to me ... IMF/BIS will start taking control? They are in the "breaking things phase" and have been for a long time, might have actually broken it in 2008 with TARP bailouts for BigBank (not for small local bank).

The Biden junta is trying to give the invaders enough of our wealth that they will still be left in charge.

168 WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A series of unusual leaks on two natural gas pipelines running from Russia under the Baltic Sea to Germany triggered concerns about sabotage Tuesday, overshadowing the inauguration of a long-awaited pipeline that will bring Norwegian gas to Poland in efforts to bolster Europe’s energy independence from Moscow.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called the events “an act of sabotage,” while Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she could not rule it out after three leaks were detected over the past day on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which are filled with gas but not delivering the fuel to Europe. An energy standoff over Russia’s war in Ukraine halted flows on Nord Stream 1 and prevented them from ever starting in the parallel Nord Stream 2.

Competitive devaluing is not a new concept. The entire industrialized world basically played this game from 2008 until COVID hit.

The problem comes up outside of the monetary sphere. There are plenty of problems there, too, but the kind of inflation we and much of the rest of the world have been seeing has real consequences on the population. Eventually, some politician gets wise to it and blows up whatever he has to blow up to deal with the problem (including his country's creditors) and lets the chips fall where they may. Alternatively, they all hold the line until revolution becomes palatable and weaker countries start experiencing them.

242 As I've posted before, the long-term solution is that certain federal programs are going to have to be devolved to the states. Despite the presence of tens of thousands of bureaucrats in those departments, a surprising amount of the federal budget is already largely administered by the states: housing, transportation, education, Medicaid, welfare, agriculture, etc. It would not be a big step to devolve the fiscal responsibility for those programs and take them off the federal budget, perhaps with federal money tapering over a number of years rather than being completely cut off.

Some states will choose to replace the declining federal money with their own money and some won't. The states that choose to maintain benefit levels will become welfare magnets, drive up taxes, and drive out businesses and people who want to work. They will go bankrupt. The states that cut benefits to a sustainable level will prosper.

This is the best solution that does not involve CW2.

He actually played a Christian who led the underground community in the city. He is imprisoned when it is found out he is a Christian.

Sir Lawrence Olivier- I 'think' he was supposed to be Pliny the Elder (or an analogue.)
Ned Betty- a fish sauce magnate (wealthy, but trying to break into the nobility.)
Olivia Hussey- slave or commoner who is a christian
Duncan Reger- a gladiator named Lydon. His father is a christian.
There is an actor I cannot recall the name of who is a Greek nobleman who falls in love with Olivia Hussy, and has a blind slave woman who has a crush on him. Lydon is in love with the slave girl and so would like to kill the Greek dude.

Back in the Crossfire Hurricane days, I posted regularly that there had to have been hundreds of people involved, who fell into 4 groups: 1. the true conspirators (Strzok, Page, McCabe, etc) who knew the story was bogus, but pushed it for political reasons; 2. the easily fooled, who believed it because they were predisposed to believe any OrangeManBad story; 3. the overly trusting, who believed it because their chain of command told them it was true; and 4. the cynical careerists, who could see that it was BS, but went along because Hillary was going to win and there was no upside in not being on the team (and then had to help cover it up after Trump won). Different motivations, but all guilty.

324 The stated reason for Russia cutting off deliveries through Nordstream was that the pressure pumps (on the Russia end) failed. There is no reason that pipe should have been under pressure. Story does not wash.

325 ZH:
||Swedish broadcaster SVT reported that the Swedish National Seismic Network detected two underwater explosions near the Nord Stream pipeline system on Monday.

“One of the explosions had a magnitude of 2.3, and was registered at as many as 30 measuring stations in southern Sweden,” SVT said.

Bjorn Lund, a professor in seismology and director of the Swedish National Seismic Network, said these two seismic events were explosions.

Here’s a map of the three leaks on the Nord Stream pipeline system.||

Jerusalem Post: ||Seismologists in Denmark and Sweden on Monday registered powerful blasts in the areas of the Nord Stream gas leaks, Sweden’s National Seismology Centre (SNSN) at the Uppsala University told public broadcaster SVT on Tuesday.

“There is no doubt that these were explosions,” SNSN seismologist Bjorn Lund told SVT.||

Some people told me, like, ‘Oh, I didn’t wanna be in line because you were mean to Eleven,'” he said at a Heroes Comic Con Belgium event Sunday. “Even now, some people don’t follow me or don’t support me because I’m Black.”

328 Could we at least determine if there was an actual explosion due to sabotage before we start assigning blame?

There wasn't "an" actual explosion. There were three of them, on separate pipes, at different locations, several hours apart. One was on NS2, so this isn't some sort of cascade, either.

334 "So what's the solution? There isn't one.

Multi-trillion dollar debt is baked into the cake. "

We're somewhere north of 130 trillion in unfunded liabilities and not all that far from an uncontrolled collapse of debt servicing via interest rates (personally I'm not sure if they're going to go for deliberate hyperinflation, or actually just write off debts). The ~1.6 trillion worth of mostly nationalized loans doesn't really even move the needle, and the feds forced most borrowers onto a 20-25 year generic version of the PSLF repayment scheme anyways - most of this was a planned write-off since 2009.

There is no "fixing" this. We passed the point of no return, fiscally, by 2009 at the latest. I don't know why people keep bothering to pretend otherwise.

You'd think the Russians would have claimed just 80% support, which would have had at least a thin veneer of plausibility.

404 We're just repeating & enlarging what's been done before. Bail out unions under TARP; now, bail out unions under the American Rescue Plan. Then, bail out BoA bigly & also other banks under TARP (housing crises) & now establish the Emergency Capital Investment Program to fund community financial institutions to provide loans, grants, and other assistance to small and minority-owned businesses and consumers, all basically under the BoA.

Then, destroy high rise community buildings - a nightmare for policing - for the needier communities but now, rebuild high rise communities for needier communities. Then, get rid of community schools and make regional schools. Now, let's go back to community schools & building entire community resources around them. Same with education, school loans, etc. I feel we're (middle class) just spinning around and pols, government & NGOs are simply 'making work,' keeping us busy so we think & act on small terms. Where's opportunity and $ for the future? I look @ a few sources: How members of Congress r playing the markets. Publications such as Philadelphia magazine, Sep issuerivate school guide. USA legalizing drugs.

They got along fine before 2011, when the first pipeline was completed. All the ports and ships and sea routes and overland pipelines thru the Ukraine and Pelosi, Biden, Kerry, and Romney family hands still exist.

They'll be fine, there will be just more commissions paid.

420 80% seems extremely plausible to me. A comfortable super-majority seems absolutely certain. But I may well have missed something. I would think any who feared being part of the RF - or "independent", as was the nominal end-state until February - would have long since made other plans by now, and be gone. But I have no real handle on the specifics of that sort of development, and have seen no info related to it.

I lived through this before, and this is going to be worse. At least Ford, Carter, et al didn't want inflation. The crew in charge today do.

430 What’s the solution? Massive inflation for many years will over time shrink the USA’s debt to a much smaller and more manageable percentage of the USA’s economy.

Of course, this will destroy the lives of millions of lower and middle income Americans.

You asked the question. You didn’t say you had to like the answer.

And by the way, just like rich, famous, and connected Americans are never punished for their crimes — think Alec Baldwin — they don’t think for a second about the suffering of millions of (especially White) Americans forced to eat soy and cricket “meat” while they eat waygu beef.
