It looks much like the kinds of paintings Ballantine Books commissioned for its original SF novels in the '60s and '70s. Those were very surreal, even if they had anything to do with the book's plot.

Regarding the Russian conscription:
My great, great, great grandfather was born in the Russian Empire. He was Jewish and lived in the Pale. He was born around 1843. The Russian government needed soldiers so they conscripted young men like they are doing today. In order to serve in the Army, you needed to be Christian. If you were Jewish, you were required to convert. My great, great, great grandfather had none of that and left for New York City, where he had a successful tailor and retail shop. Kansas: Dodge City was a major cow town in the Old West (so were Hays and Ellsworth, I think). Kansas City -- though they might mean KCMO -- features in the old R & B song, "Goin' To Kansas City (Kansas City, Here I Come)." Kansas City steaks. "Corn as high as an elephant's eye." Dorothy and Toto.
In an episode of U.N.C.L.E., Luciana Paluzzi asks Napoleon Solo, "Are you from Kansas?" Solo smiles. "Isn't everybody?" I'd say those are parts to a brand. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, dreaming of Elsewhere at September 28, 2022 10:07 AM (J2vNu) 241

Hence, beyond the Pale.
--------------- We've had this debate before. It was also the Normans to Elizabethan English-controlled area in Ireland around Dublin; and its use in English predates the Russian ghetto. [Apparently other English enclaves in Calais were also called Pales like the Dublin one.] Wiki has the OED saying it's unrelated to either Pale. ||Etymology: From beyond + the + pale (“wooden stake, picket; fence made from wooden stakes, palisade; bounds, limits; territory or defensive area within a specific boundary or under a given jurisdiction”, suggesting that anything outside an authority’s jurisdiction is uncivilized. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, there is insufficient evidence that the term originally referred to the English Pale, the part of Ireland directly under the control of the English government in the Late Middle Ages; or to the Pale of Settlement which existed from 1791 to 1917 in the Russian Empire, where Jewish people were mostly relegated to living.|| Posted by: andycanuck (yikp0) at September 28, 2022 10:10 AM (yikp0) 263

I hope the remnants of the HC move off into the Atlantic quickly. Last years Ike did a number with extensive flood damage in my corner of PA. Homes still running off generators, trash still on lawns, porta potties still outside. A restaurant I like along the Schuylkill River took months to reopen with massive volunteer effort. I forget the exact stats but to be a 13 handicapper would place you in the very elite of recreational golfers, to put it mildly (typical round in the 80s?). Saw the US golf associations #s years ago. I think the % of people who regularly shoot under 100 is fairly small. These political/public figures, in most cases, claiming such numbers are as ridiculous in this case as they often are about important things. Trump's an exception, I think, as he played a lot and took it seriously, though I've never seen his alleged handicap.
