We Are Kept Keen On The Grindstone Of Pain And ONTs

Greetings, Deplorables! How's everybody doing? I've been trying to get my new optic mounted. I got it from a left wing weapons manufacturer, I'm trying to get a feel for their tech.

So what's a “fact” that makes you uncomfortable? How about this: There's a certain distance from a nuclear explosion where all the frozen pizzas are perfectly thawed.

RED ALERT!

America Could Face A Beer Shortage Due To Mississippi Underground Volcano Gas Leak

According to scientific experts, the United States is experiencing a CO2 shortage due to contamination that is showing up in CO2 being sourced from an extinct underground volcano in Mississippi.
No, I haven’t been drinking. This isn’t #fakenews.
The Jackson Dome, which sits 2,900 feet beneath Jackson, Mississippi, has provided CO2 to the restaurant and beer industries going all the way back to 1977, but this summer, the supply was contaminated by raw gas which means the CO2 is useless and has led to a shortage of the gas that is critical to the brewing industry.
You know where this is going: the supply chain is being wrecked and prices have jumped as a result.

If there's one thing that would be sure to throw the country into chaos, it's running out of beer.

Get them off of me!

Scientists have calculated how many ants are on Earth.

And it's a lot. The biomass of ants is greater than all birds and mammals combined.

“It’s unimaginable,” Patrick Schultheiss, a lead author on the study who is now a researcher at the University of Würzburg in Germany, said in a Zoom interview. “We simply cannot imagine 20 quadrillion ants in one pile, for example. It just doesn’t work.”
Counting all those insects — or at least enough of them to come up with a sound estimate — involved combining data from “thousands of authors in many different countries” over the span of a century, Schultheiss added.

20 quadrillion. What's weird is that about half of them live in my yard. When we first moved to Texas, everybody kept apologizing about the heat. They should have apologized for the bugs. We've got ants everywhere. Not fire ants, fortunately, but the little sugar ants. And boy do they get angry if we're late with the rent.

Idiots Out Walking Around

No, not Iowa. New York City.

My Morning With the Park Slope Panthers

I swear, I thought I was a parody or a script for a pretty funny skit. Nope. The Post reported on the meeting too.

Seems a resident of Park Slope attempted to start a neighborhood watch/Guardian Angel type group to combat the rise in crime in his neighborhood.

The group—a few older, white women who love their pets; a young white man who said he was there for the sake of his younger sister’s safety; a forty-something Asian woman who wanted to “elevate Park Slope culture as a whole”—nodded along.
The Venn diagram for Park Slopers and Democratic voters is pretty much a circle. No one wanted to be labeled Park Karens. This made the whole crime-fighting thing a bit awkward: “It’s about finding a way that’s non-biased to report these things and have people feel like it’s safe here,” said Emily, one of the Panthers.“You don’t want to fall into that stereotype of privilege.”
A group of four who looked to be in their early twenties—three women and one man—rolled up about 15 minutes into the meeting. “Are y’all the Park Slope Panthers?” The one who asked was dragging a speaker on wheels and playing electronic music, presumably to drown out the meeting. “We are super not into you guys having your meeting or doing anything in the park.”

As far as the name, and the fortysomething dude’s problem with it: “There’s two statues of panthers at an entrance to the park,” Nammack pointed out, gesturing toward the two limestone pedestals designed by Stanford White. The panthers had been sculpted by Alexander Phimister Proctor, and had been there since 1898.
Didn’t matter. “Using the Panthers as your group’s name is kind of abhorrent to me,” said one of the girls. She was white, wearing cut-off jean shorts, loafers with socks, and a Baggu purse. “It feels antithetical to what the Black Panthers would stand for.” The next girl to speak said her name was Sky. She, too, was white, and had also grown up in the neighborhood: “It’s easy to be wrong about who you’re going after, particularly when those are some of the few black people still living in the neighborhood, and they’ve been pushed out on the streets by all white, ultra-wealthy people.”

There's more, so much more, but you'll have to follow the link to read it. I did come to a realization while reading, however. These people....they're Eloi. I mean to a fuckin' T. And the Morlocks are coming out to feed.

Unexpectedly

America's blackest city elected a Democratic Socialist mayor and there are problems

It's not going well.

Pronounced kuh-LEED kuh-MAH-oo, the mayor legally changed his name when he was 18, choosing to use all lowercase letters in the West African Yoruban tradition that prizes the community over the individual. Whereas the former mayor and most of the council members practice the incremental, integrationist, typically more moderate politics of Atlanta’s Black elite, kamau is much more radical — a gay, Christian, socialist, self-described “elected activist” and “Black nationalist,” a former film student, flight attendant, bus driver, Black Lives Matter organizer and city council member. As mayor, he has to this point, and to the constant consternation of his fellow Democratic South Fulton elected officials, stressed his slogans of “America’s Blackest City” and “Black on Purpose.” His goal, he has said, is to create here not only a “laboratory” for progressive policy but “a real-life Wakanda”

The city council is trying desperately to save the city from his madness

in a tense convening in which it felt like most of the onlookers on-hand were kamau supporters from the area’s Black activist community, the council effectively un-fired the city attorney — kamau could do what he did, according to the city charter, and the council also could do what it did — voiced strenuous support for the police department and its chief, stripped kamau of his duty as chair of this meeting and finally and unceremoniously instituted a vote of no confidence in the mayor.
“A vote of no confidence in Mayor khalid kamau is warranted. It is necessary,” said a practically seething Corey Reeves, the mayor pro tem. He called kamau’s remarks earlier in the week “misleading,” “false” and “simply irresponsible.” He “stood on the steps of Camelot condominiums,” Reeves continued, “and instead of calling out the slum lords, he chose to call out this council by saying there is a culture of corruption, a culture in which it is perceived he is the nucleus.” He said he and his fellow members of council had been “rendered choiceless” in their no-confidence vote…
…the rest of the city council took turns censuring the mayor.

Running a city according to CRT doesn't work. Who would have thunk such a thing?

LOL! Constables are a mixed bag; I've known some personally who were great LEO's, as dedicated as any. On the other hand, a few years back almost the entire Dallas County Constable's office was arrested when it came out that they were rousting illegals and anyone else with a record hiding out - and instead of arresting them, they would steal all their shit including their cars, then sell it all through fences and pocket the money. What tipped people off was when it got to where everyone associated with that office had 2 or 3 brand new cars sitting in their driveways.

Dmitry Medvedev makes explicit what happens after the annexation elections in Ukraine:

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday that any weapons in Moscow's arsenal, including strategic nuclear weapons, could be used to defend territories annexed to Russia from Ukraine.

Medvedev, who also serves as deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, said that referendums planned by Russian-installed and separatist authorities in large swathes of Ukrainian territory will take place, and "there is no going back".

"Therefore, various retired idiots with generals' stripes do not need to scare us with talk about a NATO strike on Crimea," Medvedev wrote on Telegram. "Hypersonic [missiles] are guaranteed to be able to reach targets in Europe and the United States much faster."

There was a policy for decades at the Oregon State Mental Hospital in Salem that all unclaimed remains of patients were to be cremated, and kept for possible reclamation. There was a basement vault that was used until the recent remodel.
Per my dad, there was a rumor that the standard issue metal urn was not correct size for a certain portion of the population, and the extra amount was tipped away. Possibly on the lawns.

250 So a guy dies while sleeping with his mistress. Wife is shocked and upset, naturally, but somehow soldiers on making the funeral arrangements. The funeral director asks her to stop by as a problem with the casket has developed prior to tomorrow's viewing.

As discreetly as he can, the director informs the widow that her husband's enormous post-mortem erection is preventing the coffin lid from closing properly. She is momentarily taken aback, but then a strange looks comes over her face as she tells the director to cut off the appendage and shove it in his backside.

At the viewing the next morning, the mourners all remarked at the flushed appearance of the dearly departed. As the widow bent over the open casket for a last kiss goodbye, she spotted what looked like a tear falling down his cheek.

She smiled and whispered to her cheating husband, "Hurts, don't it!", and closed the coffin's lid.

Nixon responded by going to DEFCON 3. Didn't stay there very long, but a definite nuclear crisis.

273 >>There was a policy for decades at the Oregon State Mental Hospital in Salem that all unclaimed remains of patients were to be cremated, and kept for possible reclamation. There was a basement vault that was used until the recent remodel.

My ex's family operated a small nursing home in MA. It was right around the corner from a mental institution and when the institutions were closed back in the day the patients were basically abandoned. Those who had family that cared about them took them back and those who didn't were just forgotten.

They took two, a man and a woman, who were both older. Nobody came for them. They were given rooms in the nursing home and had menial "jobs" but were basically residents and lived very happily for the remainder of their lives. They became like family members, certainly more than their own families gave them. Nobody was happier for my ex when we got married than Eddie.

It's pretty disgraceful how we treat some of the most unfortunate. Nobody should be unclaimed.

317 Ok, serious question: has anyone here ever shopped around for a different electricity provider (in states that allow you to do this) and saved a significant amount on their power bill by doing so? Our local utility in downstate IL (Ameren) just had a huge jump in their electric rates and they say it's purely because their supplier jacked up the cost. They say they don't actually generate/produce power, they just “deliver” it. In IL and other states with a deregulated electric power market, customers can choose a different supplier if they want, and there are at least 15-20 suppliers available to choose from. I'm wondering if this is worth trying or if it just creates more problems.

And many of them were *wearing masks, outside*, during the publicity event. A significant portion of my despair and disbelief when Trump was removed wat that this complete derailment of science and society in 2020-etc would never be examined, the disastrous policies' failure documented, and a very searing public accounting held for it all. 375 Mixed bag in the Peon workshop today. My newly installed air line to the big shop bled down the tank on the compressor overnight. Went on a leak hunt. One flare connection wasn't properly tightened. A twist with two wrenches fixed that. And the hose plugged into the end of the new line had a leak. So I unplugged it. Holding good now.

Sorted about a a gallon and a half of mixed hardware from a bucket, into categories: nuts, bolts, washers, everything else. Freed up the bucket, and pushed the more detailed sort(s) down the road a bit.

Painted the front sway bar for the Avanti, and later, installed it, or at least got part way into the process. It's hanging on its frame brackets, now. Also lubed a few grease fittings, and discovered why the speedometer does not work: the cable was laying against the exhaust pipe, got cooked, and seized up.

Put the newly-painted rear sway bar into the dune buggy chassis.

Did a load of laundry, and dried it on the line.

Posted by: Ciampino at September 23, 2022 12:19 AM (qfLjt)

That sounds unlikely. One would expect the CO2 source formation to have considerable pressure, whereas a mine shaft would be at atmospheric pressure, plus a few psi to account for the depth of the shaft. Leakage would be into the mine shaft. I think most likely, they simply depleted the reservoir. Volcano is extinct; it's not making any more.

USNtakim, if you haven't been to NTC for a while, it's of course closed as you say, but has also become the best base-conversion of them all (last I saw). Not hard, when you have beautiful location near the harbor in San Diego, and beautiful early 20th century military post construction style (some variant of Spanish colonial I think, or Mission).

But the company that did the conversion did their homework, and a beautiful job. I think they found that the original colors used up to WWII were a tannish brown, not the yellow you had at boot camp, and that I grew up around. (the old yellow paint can be seen in the Topgun scene where Maverick is morose after Goose's death, he's shaving or something, then jumps in a car out on the street)

Just played the short par-3 course there with friends last week. Original base commander had it set up for character building, for officers. He/his wife are buried on the course. During the war, it was managed by Sam Snead, then in the USN.

yeah, surprisingly. Its a softail frame. One tube was bent, but I think the bigger problem was how it was originally assembled. It was a custom front end, and the assembly is completely different than a normal harley. The entire engineering is different, and it was hacked pretty bad. The top tree is completely smooth, no fork caps, and the tubes screw into the top tree. We had a huge pipe wrench on the tubes, and we couldn't get the tubes to turn. We said fuck it and just cut through the trees with a sawzall. The whole bike was built by an imbecile.

428 Another thing about the NTC conversion (now called Liberty Station - I tell visitors its an ironic tribute to a free country that once existed here) - in every building I've been in, they have great black/white photos of the space back in Navy days, many from WWII of course. So the market/food court has huge blow-ups of sailors working the bakery of the mess hall. The Trader Joe's has group and individual portraits of sailors, often graduation pics, all over the wall behind the cashiers.

There's Navy housing and a PX gas station on the western end, a Navy medical center, and a great series of small monuments to WWII submarines at the huge park towards the canal. It's one of my favorite places in town. The old swimming pool where I swam as a kid on a swim team, and played some high school water polo games, is gone - along with the platforms inside whose heights matched that of the decks from major classes of WWII warships (abandon ship training).

There was a set of standard NCAA/Olympic diving platforms alongside these other ones, which went much higher. Swim coach would make us jump off the top Navy one to end practice. The (wooden) ceiling was just above our heads. Water was so far away, it shimmered - scary to a kid. (and imagine - imagine - a coach doing that now!)

A portion of the book written for the New Review version, later published as a separate short story, reveals that a visit by the Time Traveller to the even more distant future results in his encountering rabbit-like hopping herbivores, apparently the descendants of the Eloi. They are described as being plantigrade, with longer hind legs and tailless, being covered with straight greyish hair that "thickened about the head into a Skye terrier's mane", having human-like hands (described as fore feet), and having a roundish head with a projecting forehead and forward-looking eyes that were obscured by lank hair.

439 Sadly much of San Diego's pre- and WWII Navy legacy has been lost. The Naval Supply Building, at the foot of Broadway across the street from Navy Pier (where the Midway carrier museum is permanently moored) just in the last year or so. There are so many great WWII photos of ships loading at the Navy or Broadway piers, with the building right there in the background.

The coastal artillery installations up on Pt. Loma are still mostly there, one observation bunker fully restored, talk of more restoration to come.

And I'm not even sure if there's a marker at the city golf course at Torrey Pines, where they play the tournament every January, recounting the location's history as Camp Callan, a rare (for these parts) Army installation for anti-aircraft gunnery training.

Posted by: Jim at September 23, 2022 01:20 AM (e6UQI)

Well how it works is like this, the top tree is completely smooth, no stem nut, no fork tube caps. usually on the top of the tube you got the cap that keeps the spring in, and that slips up into the tree, and the top caps keep the tube up in the tree. Not this front end. the cap that keeps the spring in gets replaced, and it has external treads on it, and the tree is threaded internally, so you literally screw the tube into the top tree. The lower tree has no pinch bolt, it has a weird internal wedge lock, so when you tighten what looks like a pinch bolt is actually pulling the wedge up against the tube to lock it in the lower tree. There is a larger thread before the smaller wedge thread, and to release the wedge you screw a larger bolt in that acts like a press to push the wedge back to release it. The fork stem goes in from the bottom and that threads into the top tree. All of it was abused. It looks like they tried to remove the tubes without releasing the wedge and it grooved the shit out of the tubes. It was a mess.

462 Nightwatch. MAGA candidates can make hay, running not only against (d), but against GOPe such as Lindsey and the Turtle.

They don't have to swear to unseat them. Just simply swear to NOT FALL IN LINE with them.

That'd win 'em heap plenty mo' votes.

466 Berserker. Many a used car or bike I've taken a pass on, because Bubba had been the mechanic.

I quickly learned to buy only untouched, Factory Stock, and it has served me well. Want "mods"? Sure, my mechanic, my choice. But not from whatever "bubba" might've done right, or most likely, wrong.

I just looked it up. The length of the day changes the most rapidly at the equinoxes. Here, it's shortening at the rate of about 2 minutes per day. In higher latitudes, it's even faster.

This gives the feel that summer is over and winter is coming. Short days. For Pixy down under, it's just the opposite. Days are rapidly lengthening, heralding spring and the coming summer.

Welcome to Earf, third rock from the Sun.

My former Father in Law, my ex's StepDad, was one such ant from the Lexington. When he went down the rope, he said it was only about fifteen feet to the water.

And then they swam like hell, 'cause at that angle, they feared she'd roll atop them soon. They swam fast, and well. He was a hell of a good man, too.

498 Con Ed is my electric utility company. I was paying $65 a month based upon usage; any over or under amounts are put into the final yearly bill. Just got my new and improved monthly bill. It went from $65 a month to $98 a month. I don't use that much electricity as I live alone. I only keep lights on if I'm in a room. I have a computer. I have a tv. I have a microwave and a toaster oven. I have stand fans (no a/c) for the heat of summer. That's pretty much the extent of my use of electricity. My monthly bill still went up 50%.
