Top Story

  • I managed to snag an Xbox Series X. The local electronics store - local to my old place in Sydney, that is - had it in stock a week after I handed in the keys, but only for in-store purchases. But the "notify me" button on the Microsoft store had changed to a "buy now" button when I checked today. The buy now button didn't work, but when I logged in and went back through the Xbox page I was able to add it to my cart and check out.

Since I am now moderately far from the madding crowd, I should have it in two weeks.

  • I also managed to snag the cord for my new electric mower, something I somehow avoided for 15 years with the previous one. So into town I went for some pliers and electrical tape. I have pliers and electrical tape... Somewhere. Easier to go into town.

  • I've been hearing what sounded like ducks out the back of the house the past couple of weeks, but never caught sight of anything duck-like. Until today, walking back from the shops (which is quite a hike - there's a 400 foot elevation difference) I came across a herd of wild ducks crossing the street a couple of blocks from my house.

    So, yes. Ducks.

  • Australian mining company Fortescue Metals Group plans to spend $6 billion on "Net Zero" investments by 2030 - including hydrogen. (Financial Times)

Hydrogen is useless as a mainstream fuel. The energy density is terrible and it leaks through everything. Anyone pushing it as a fuel is trying to sell you something.

The Making of Gura Gaiden the Animation Video of the Day

Where is our Hololive anime? If they need money, all they have to do is open a Kickstarter and they'll be buried in cash in the first twenty minutes. And it's not like the rest of the anime industry is doing anything that impressive right now.

They've been doing some great animated shorts recently, like this one and Bae's video for A Million Miles Away. But the impetus for those was with the individual talents, and we haven't heard anything about the Hololive Alternative series for some time.

20 quadrillion = 2 x 10^16
Call it 8B = 8 x 10^9 humans. So ants outweigh humans if the average human weighs less than 2 x 10^16 / 8 x 10^9 = 2.5M average ants.

Let's say the average human is 70kg = 70M milligrams. So if the average ant weighs more than 70/2.5 = 28mg then the ants are heavier.

28mg seems a little heavy for the average ant, but it's in the right ballpark.

Hello to all! The home renovation techs are supposed to come today to repair my ceiling and to stop the source of the water leaks in my A/C. I'll believe it when I see it. Unlike some other residents here, I have no problem speaking out. If the owner wants to evict me, I say do it and be damned, I can afford to move. And I want to as soon as the weather cools a bit. I have my eye on a complex a few miles from here which appears, and is said to still be, quite nice. 50% higher rent, but won't it be worth it!

17 Weight of an ant: 1 to 150 mg per the internets.

You'd have to figure what the distribution is of ants by weight to be sure. My guess is the 150 is for those giant ants like the bullet thing.

Ants do not set off my back brain thing like wasps and hornets, but I am not a huge fan of insects in general.

Considering the format, it would be visually hard to tell. I still think you would be able to though. On the other hand, if they explicitly tried to do one, I think that would be a selling point for the weeb community. I dunno. There is a lot of psychological stuff going into the popularity of vtubers. It is one of those formats and forms of entertainment that I am mystified by.

We had giant bull ants in Australia. 1.5 inches. I've been bitten a few times. Not pleasant.

My guess is most of the 20 quadrillion are the really little ones, which is why 28mg average feels high if the range is 1-150.

Since human population is growing rapidly, and ants, if anything, are likely declining, the claim that we're the same total weight may well have been true when it was made.

Watching a show about cruise ships. There is one out there now that uses LNG. Very proud of the fact that they are not polluting the earth with nasty carbons. I guess LNG just comes out of the ground "as is".
Of course they can switch to diesel in case something happens to the LNG.
I was a little concerned when they showed the refueling process. It's seems that if not handled correctly and the system is chilled to accept the refuel, it can get kinda explody.
I'm assuming that at sea, if the system develops a leak, it could be explody also.

I do not agree, but it is more out of principle than any hard data. Ant population world wide would be a hard thing to track, I would think. It is one of those things that in a larger sense, I sometimes think we make assumptions based on reasoning that is not supported by data and is very hard for us to know. Do human populations increase or decrease the opportunities for ants, for example? I dunno. Our waste might impact them positively? By the same token, use of insecticides (at least effective ones) has decreased due to our own peccadillos, so is that also a net benefit (for them?)

78 You're supposed to not think about the massive change in infrastructure, materials required, transportation energy required, construction, energy, etc. over what is already in place and sitting right there to feed the internal combustion engines that we have essentially perfected.

Now shut up and save the planet, dummy.

A) Every generation places itself at the center of history's narrative arc.
B) This generation grew up on a diet of religious climateschatology: "we're doomed if we don't repent our wicked carbon ways".

A) + B) = where we are today.

Good summary. This is destruction, not progress.

CO₂ is a plant food. Using the Lovelock Gaia hypothesis, I would expect to see more plant growth. I saw a little bit of data in the literature of Earth surveillance from space that suggests this. But nothing since, and the question is not being asked.

It's being asked. The people in power just don't like to talk about it, because there can be no good from CO₂.

Plenty of evidence for a much greener earth due to increased CO₂. One study I saw shows that the rate of increase of CO₂ itself had plateaued in the last 20 years because plants are storing a lot more of it.

They'll never talk about that. "Self-correcting" climate change means giving up control over every breath you take.

119 It's been a good year for figs. We had 3 crops from one tree. The first dropped off from a cold snap, then a good fat crop, and then it surprised us by putting out another one. I don't know what that means, but the birds are happy.

Speaking of birds, we still have hummingbirds here. They seem reluctant to leave. Maybe they know we are expecting temps in the 90s this week and are waiting until that's over.

Thus it ever was. Granpa managed to keep an Elm tree barely alive for about 50 years in El Paso. Through dutch elm and just simply because it is El Paso. He kept a patch of grass in the back yard around the elm, Cut half the backyard into a cactus garden and completely rocked the front yard. Managed to keep several rose bushes alive (which was more a problem of making sure they were watered, they loved the soil and sun.) An arbor of grape vines. Point being anything he WANTED to grow besides the cactus took quite a bit of effort.

And he still complained of weeds growing through cracks in the driveway.

128 Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 Standard Edition is part of GamePass, and Sim Update 10 comes out tomorrow morning.

I am not sure when Flying Iron's F6F Hellcat goes live in the MSFS store, but when it does, it's actually surprisingly beginner friendly. It's got a lot of power for getting off the ground in a hurry, yet its stall speed is also only about 60kt, and, aside from the sort of accelerated stall that any fast heavy plane can get itself into if you pull back on the stick to hard, its handling characteristics are pretty benign.

After handing a gamepad to a bunch of people who've never flown before, it really does seem to be the one they are able to stay in the air longest with.

They're up to 10 world updates, including Australia and Japan

Or if you want to go truly art deco, and maybe don't feel entirely right touring Japan in a USN fighter, there's also the Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing.

There are also all sorts of weird and wild planes, like the bush-truck Kodiak 100, the Junkers F.1 in both classic and modern, the Van's RV-14 kit plane, there are just so many planes to fly and so many places to go.
