Woke Marketing Propels A Feminist Movie to the Top of the Box Office -- A Movie About an African Tribe Which Took Slaves and Sold Them to the Europeans
Plus: Woke Imbecile Don LeMon Wants Reparations from King Charles

She-Hulk and Rings of Power aren't even the worst Woke Feminist Homework Assignments (I resist calling them "entertainments") this week.

Oh, I should have mentioned: the headline is misleading. Yes, it won the box office. But there are no major releases to compete against, and haven't been any forever. The last major release was... Thor, back in July. That's how Maverick has managed to make millions every week.

So yes, this won the box office this weekend, but it was, as James Madison says, "a shit weekend." It was the sort of weekend a woke niche film can win.

The Woman King, is movie written by, get this, two woke white women about an African tribe led, supposedly, by a woman.

Although, the movie features a male king. So I don't know how Viola Davis is The Woman King. Is she a "king" in a figurative sense? Like a Kang?

Anyway, the only story these two woke white women could find in Africa that interested them was about a tribe led, supposedly, by a woman.

They did have to overlook one small detail about this tribe to get it on the big screen:

The tribe was one of the main slave-capturing tribes of Africa. They captured slaves from other tribes and used them for their own slave labor; and, of course, they captured an awful awful lot of Africans and sold them to Europeans to be bound into slavery.

A lot of slaves.

This tribe, now being given the hero treatment by Hollywood, actually was directly and fundamentally responsible for the transoceanic slave system.

You might wonder: Of all the possible stories that could be told about Africa, why in HELL would you choose to mythologize and valorize the Slavers?

Well, once again: Because two woke white women wrote it, and all they give a shit about is the Strong Empowered Female Represenation.

That she's a Strong Empowered Female Slave-Queen? Eh, not such a big deal.

The critics love it, of course.

#YasKweenEnslave

Call it a woke civil war: the Viola Davis star vehicle The Woman King has topped the North American box office on its debut weekend, even as online activists called for a boycott over the film's blatant whitewashing of an African tribe's participation in the transatlantic slave trade.

Critics have awarded The Woman King with a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, hailing its "fresh female perspective" and its timely message of "women empowered to own their own bodies," and with a $19 million gross, the film ranked #1 at the weekend box office and earned an A+ CinemaScore from viewers.

And to own the bodies of the innocent men, women, and children they enslave. That's some double-secret probation "owning of bodies."

Woke social media users, however, brutally trashed the film for overlooking the fact that the Dahomey tribe it glorifies had a dubious history of selling slaves to Europeans -- promoting the hashtag #BoycottWomanKing. Even the far-left Slate had to call the makers out on it.

"The Dahomey had fierce female fighters. They also sold people overseas," Ana Lucia Araujo bluntly said in her review of the film.

The Smithsonian Magazine also admitted that "the kingdom's involvement in the slave trade doesn't align as neatly with the historical record."

"As historian Robin Law notes, Dahomey emerged as a key player in the trafficking of West Africans between the 1680s and early 1700s, selling its captives to European traders whose presence and demand fueled the industry--and, in turn, the monumental scale of Dahomey's warfare," wrote Meilan Solly of The Smithsonian.

They didn't just sell slaves, either. They kept slaves for their own benefit.

The King of the tribe -- not sure why this is called "The Woman King" when there's a male king -- eventually gave up selling slaves.

But, here's the twist: He was pressured to do give up on his slaver ways... by the White British Empire, who were by that point in time using their financial and trading power, and especially their naval power, to wipe out the Atlantic slave trade.

Solly even noted how Dahomey King Ghezo (depicted by John Boyega in the film) had to be pressured by the British government in 1852 to end its participation in the slave trade.

"Though Ghezo did at one point explore palm oil production as an alternative source of revenue, it proved far less lucrative, and the king soon resumed Dahomey's participation in the slave trade," she noted.

Mind your own business, White Colonizers.

We're busy in the #SlaveTrade.

More at the link.

Remember all the screaming about the Mel Gibson film The Patriot? They fictionalized an account of, what was he called?, "The Swamp Fox." They made him a different character. All to avoid the fact that the actual Swamp Fox owned slaves.

The critics howled at the whitwash. Again, even though this was a fictional story. Inspired by real events, but fictional.

This movie is about an actual tribe called the Dahomey which actually existed and ran the African Franchise in the transatlantic slave trade.

The star of the Pro-Slavery Propaganda Film, Viola Davis, took to Twitter to tell people they must buy tickets to support this movie, in order to prove that a black-woman-led film could win the box office race.

Well, I mean, sure, if it's a film about a Strong Black Woman who is instrumental in enslaving African men, women, and children and conducting the transatlatic slave trade.

Taking slaves is #BadAss.

Leftists are really the most disgraceful, disgusting people to ever walk the face of the earth, aren't they?

Below, directly on topic, Don "Black Hole of Ignorance" LeMon demands reparations for slavery from the British -- and is told that the British are owed reparations for the 2000 Navy men they lost eradicating the slave trade, and they're owed that from the slave-taking African tribes, too.

He quickly ends the interview.

This is incredible. "I want reparations."

"No, I want reparations for eradicating the slave trade. Pay up, LeMon."

You can land fighter jets on this woman because she is #Based.

7 I don't mind them whitewashing history to make a historical epic. Historical epics do that all the time.

I just find it hilarious that a pair of white women trying to be all ally and shit decided that their best avenue was the paper over the history of literal slavers.

Not just people who were upper class in a society that owned slaves, but people who literally went out and captured black people to sell into literal slavery.

That shit is hilarious, right there.

9 Demos for opening weekend from deadline.com...

"Black moviegoers turned out at 59%, with Caucasians at 19%, Latino and Hispanic at 12%, and Asian/other at 10%."
AND
"As expected, women are the majority at Woman King at 60%, with 58% over 35 and 39% over 45"

It was pretty much a Viola Davis fan vehicle...and no one else saw it. Now, the campaign is to try to shame you to see it, which I don't see as being successful.

$50M budget - will probably make $60M Dom and $40M overseas for $100M Box Office...which won't be terrible, but won't get sequels made...

It won a shit weekend. Congrats. It beat expectations. Congrats.

The lesson Hollywood will take is, "woke shit sells". They will take this lesson because they want to take this lesson. When something like Inception sells big (real big, not fake, handicapped big), the lesson is, "Chris Nolan is magic and we have no idea how to make smart scifi, so we shall learn nothing."

119 I don't want an exception just for this movie. I want all of the Earth to get their heads out of their butts and allow the admiration of Historical (and possibly future) heroes that kick the asses of their enemies. That this group sold those it conquered into slavery means they were the victors. JUST as Europeans were victorious across the planet and went where they darned well pleased.

I recall years ago, perhaps signifying the beginning of this bleach-bit attack on History, when a US elementary school named after a Cambodian/Loatian/Somewhere war hero who had made a name for himself by promoting education and teaching children to read (I do believe he was an ally of the US) had to be be scrubbed away, removed, because he was *also* using the young people he taught to read as "child soldiers". We can "nevermind" the Historical commonality of letting very young people fight in wars, but this idea that none can be admired who are not moral beacons for eternity is messed up. It just is.

211 Amazons are not from Brazil. Discuss.

Posted by: G'rump928(c) at September 20, 2022 04:48 PM (yQpMk)

The Amazon river was named Amazon by the expedition by Francisco de Orellana, who was part of the Pizarro expedition in Peru to find and chart the area that Cinnamon was grown in. The larger expedition was stalled due to the fierce resistance of the locals and the rougher ground the Spanish and their drafts of highland Indians were prepared for. In desperation Pizarro built a river boat and Orellana as his lieutenant was to go down river to find food and bring it back. With the heavy current the were swept further down than the expected and found no food. Orellana's crew mutinied and gave him the option of walking home alone or leading them to the Atlantic, making him the first expedition to travel the length of the Amazon river. During the travel down river the expedition was attacked by tribes that were led by women fighters.
It appears that European diseases disrupted the cultures so badly the settlements were abandoned and the tribes became hunter gatherers that only did a little slash and burn agriculture.

Erasing any mention of the bad in order to have a "hero" or refusing to allow a "hero" that doesn't live up to 2022 ideas of right and wrong is why assholes can not imagine that anything they do or want might be BAD. Because they are "good" and they know it, and "good" people never do awful things without being bad people forever.

It's childish. And damaging, and expecting (to the point) leftists to ask themselves if they, being "good", could ever support evil is one of the results of this.

I think the film is kind of meh, the disaster was just that they spent so much money on it or on cocaine only to produce a mundane story. 319 There are waves of the popularity of war movies.

The first was WWI, and it didn't last long because the rise of cinema as a popular art form and the beginning of major issues in Europe in the late 30s wasn't that long. Some were made like Sergeant York as thin reactions to certain realities of the early war effort for WWII, but the evolution from "here's what the boys went through over there" to "we're gonna make topical movies to convince Americans to go to war" was not a slow process.

WWII dominated for decades until about a decade after Vietnam where that took over. The Gulf War never really became a huge cinematic phenomenon. The War on Terror is probably the biggest single war focus of the last 30 years, and even that isn't that big.

The Revolution was never a major focus. It's been picked at here and there since the beginning (Griffith made a Revolutionary War movie), but it's too remote and atopical for most people which keeps it from being a box office guarnatee.

In effect, these were women who enlisted in the King's army in the stead of a man from their family, or because there was no man to send. Officially they were made "wives" of the King, so they were off-limits to men. According to Yerby, this enforced celibacy was why they became as ferocious as a pack of rabid hyenas. 339 Maybe these folks should talk to some Africans about the Dahomey? Easiest to ask ones who *were brought to America as slaves*. Oh wait, that was already done: BARRACOON, by Zora Neale Hurston, written in about 1927, as a series of interviews with one of the last slaves brought to the United States (in 1860 - after the slave trade was outlawed), named Cudjo Lewis. He was not happy in the US, as a slave or after emancipation, but he was unhappiest that the Dahomey took him from his home in the first place.
