The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Sadly, and with a broken heart, I can no longer say that my hometown of San Diego, is the greatest place in the world. I can no longer say that SD is a safe, healthy, clean, and beautiful place. I can no longer urge my family, friends, tourists, and businesses to come to SD to live, work, and play.” NBA HOF Bill Walton

Perhaps more hassling of the 1% will get them to call for action. However, I am not holding my breath.

Quote II

“If reparations need to be paid, we need to go right back to the beginning of that supply chain and say, ‘Who was rounding up their own people and having them handcuffed in cages?’ Absolutely. That’s where they should start. And maybe, I don’t know, the descendants of those families where they died at the, in the high seas trying to stop the slavery, that those families should receive something too, I think, at the same time.” British royal commentator Hillary Fordwich

Lemon really is dumber than a box of rocks.

Quote III

“My psychiatrist calls my actions, ‘compulsive behavior,' Others would call them reckless, stupid or brazen. I’m not in a position to argue with any of these descriptions.” Erick Adame, Spectrum News NY1 weatherman

We really do live in fvcked up times. What is upside down is right side up apparently to trial lawyers.

Three Venezuelan migrants filed a class action lawsuit on Tuesday against Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and other members of the Florida state government over their flight to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

Alianza Americas (a not-for-profit immigration corporation), Yanet Doe, Pablo Doe, and Jesus Doe claim the Venezuelan immigrants were exploited “for the sole purpose of advancing their own personal, financial, and political interests,” according to the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court District of Massachusetts.

What you don't know won't hurt you, amirite?

The Treasury is refusing to publish a forecast of the UK's economic outlook alongside this Friday's mini-Budget.

Independent forecaster the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has already provided a draft to Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, the BBC understands.

The Treasury Select Committee says a forecast is "vital" given recent government moves to curb living costs.

Looks like a good story: Prosecutor Beth Morrisroe told the court the visitor had a large carving knife and allegedly said to the pair: "Well you've fucked my cheesecake, game on!"

Two alleged home invaders were confronted by an angry man, holding a large knife, after they interrupted his cooking of a cake, an ACT Supreme Court trial has heard.

Key points:
James Elliott and Jackson Aldred allegedly stole items including a safe, a hydro set and a ute
The court heard they were confronted by an angry guest who was making a cheesecake
Police say they found the stolen ute's keys between Mr Aldred's clenched buttocks
James Gregory Elliott and Jackson Cory Aldred are charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery and damage to property over the incident, which took place in 2020.

On Tuesday, the ACT Supreme Court heard the two men allegedly forced their way into a unit in Chisholm through the garage door about 10pm on July 7, 2020.

The prosecution said one of the men pointed a gun at the resident, who was in the garage, and demanded his car keys, money and a hydro set, while the other man allegedly hit him on the shoulder with a machete.

It's a good thing these guys didn't interrupt CBD and the Sous Vide Mystery Machine.

SCIENTISTS HAVE BAD NEWS ABOUT ALL THESE ENERGY EFFICIENT LEDS - "THIS TREND IS WIDELY INCREASING THE RISK OF HARMFUL EFFECTS TO ECOSYSTEMS."

We’ve all heard of the woes of blue light: don’t look at your phone or computer before going to bed, because it’ll make it harder for you to sleep. And according to a new study published Wednesday in Science Advances, that problem may extend beyond your personal beauty sleep to a much larger, environmental scale.

Studying the spectral composition of the continent's lighting using images captured from the International Space Station, the researchers found that the more energy efficient and higher visibility LED lights are rapidly replacing the old school sodium lights for outdoor use in Europe, bringing with them some unintended but drastic consequences.

"Jail house lawyers." 'Phony Motion Discovered on Trump Raid Court Docket'

The bogus document claimed the Treasury had sensitive documents related to the FBI’s raid on Trump’s Florida home and told CNN to keep “leaked tax records.”

“The U.S. Department of Treasury through the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Marshals Service have arrested Seized Federal Securities containing sensitive documents which are subject to the Defendant Sealed Search Warrant by the F.B.I. arrest,” the document claimed, according to Just The News. Two warrants included in the filing were identical to those from an inmate at a North Carolina prison medical center

What an unhappy life it must be to be perpetually offended.

TikToker Says She Was “Disrespected” by Employer Who Asked for an In-Person Interview

TikToker Natalya Haddix went viral on the popular social media platform after delineating a "nightmare" job application experience that involved her having to go in-person for an initial interview where she could visibly see other folks vying for presumably the same job, along with the fact that she was asked to fill out a paper application, and that it offered a base salary she argued was way too low.

What an absolute ray of sunshine she is.

Speaking of sunshine. NFL great Tom Brady just might stay in Florida without his spousal unit.

Gisele Bundchen, Homewrecker

Feminist take great and serious umbrage if you should ever even hint that they are homewreckers. Or should we say that they are marriage wreckers? But still, ever since feminism entered the American cultural bloodstream, around five decades ago, they have broken a considerable number of marriages.

Strong, empowered women, motivated by the absurdly unrealistic idea that men and women should have precisely the same division of tasks at home, have produced a raft of divorces. At of now, America leads the world in broken homes. America leads the world in fatherless homes. Don’t we all understand that this exertion of female power has damaged children?

So, now we have Gisele Bundchen the fashion model wife of football great Tom Brady taking her grievances public. She is “quiet quitting” her marriage. She has had enough of bringing up children and making a home. Now that her youngest child has reached the ripe age of 9, she has decided to abandon home and hearth, the better to go out and save the planet.

You can’t make this stuff up.

Maybe that "threat" in school about a permanent record is true.

Florida’s Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) has been compiling secret lists of middle and high school students that they believe could “fall into a life of crime.” The confidential records, some protected by state and federal law due to the sensitive nature of their contents, have been used to single out children with poor grades, or who have been a victim of or a witness to abuse – all criteria that the Sheriff’s office uses to compile its roster.

According to Pasco County law enforcement officials, 420 students are currently on the list – a list created by data plucked surreptitiously from academic records and those of the state Department of Children and Families.

Neither the parents nor the children have been aware of the Sheriff’s Office’s practices until now, and even school superintendent Kurt Browning said he was “unaware of the Sheriff’s Office was using school data to identify kids who might become criminals,” the Tampa Bay Times reported.

I saw a YouTube video entitled the biggest lie about Africa and Africans which proposes that the biggest lie is that Africans sold other Africans into slavery. Then the rest of video says it's kind of true but doesn't count because they didn't consider themselves Africans but rather members of one tribe or another and, anyway, you can't judge 16th and 17th cenrury Africans by today's standards. So that's why it's a lie even though it's true.

82 The amazing thing to consider about Tom Brady and Giselle Bundchen is that she's worth about twice as much as he is for essentially walking around mostly naked and strutting awkwardly on a runway.

Anyway, they're both beautiful people, they'll be alright no matter what happens.

83 In total fairness to Tom Brady's not-sure-if-woke wife, there's a lot of evidence that football is his one true love. She may have a valid argument, especially if he mad a bunch of promises that he was gonna retire and spend more time with the family.

In all countries of sub-Saharan Africa, English, French, or Portuguese are official national languages. Nigeria alone has more than 100 languages and dialects.

More to the point, if any group tried to make its own language the National Language, unending murder and chaos. Therefore Old Colonial White People languages are best option.

One underreported story is that depolicing of blue cities is continuing. For Portland, it goes like this.

- The police force is 20% - 25% smaller than just two years ago, given retirements and cops transferring to other departments. (The city offered substantial bonuses to recent retirees to come back and work for a while, and they just laughed.)

- Both violent and property crime have exploded.

- The cops now only have the manpower to investigate the most violent crimes. Anyone who has anything stolen is told to just file a police report online. (There is also zero traffic enforcement now.)

- This pisses off people who call the cops and get zero response, which further weakens support for the police.

- And so on. Hard to see what the endpoint is.

244 Don't get me wrong, it's not really that I'm taking Giselle Bundschen's side of it either. She's rich, attractive, and 'socially conscious' any one of which is strong evidence of latent cray-cray. I'm just saying that this guy has a reputation of being the sportsball equivalent of the Star Trek ubernerd who goes to all the conventions and can quote every line of the shows, sorted by episode, but is only vaguely aware that other people actually exist.

Ha. I heard someone listening to a video at lunch today of a teacher saying "Lots of people don't realize how hard teachers work. We do a lot after school, and sometimes even get phone calls from students or parents asking questions about something."

It was all I could do to not walk over and sit down with the woman and watch the rest of the video to laugh at it. Yes, it's a job. That's how they work. You've probably never been called in to work 48 hours during a hurricane, have you? Heck, you probably think it's a big deal when you have to work an hour over for a fundraiser or band performance.

Spoilers: Everyone's job is like that. That's how jobs work. It was amazing to hear that teachers apparently don't know that.

I fear it will take quite a few of the 1% getting murdered, raped, beaten, robbed, burned out of their homes, and carjacked before all the friends and relsatives of the victims abandon their "can't happen here" mentality.

Their initial reaction to suffering some of what the 99% is will be to hunker-down in their nice neighborhoods, behind legions of police they get their pet mayors to provide, along with legions of private security.

While they continue to keep their heads in the sand and their precious pink butts protected, lawlessness will increase outside the enclaves of the 1%. We are a long way from turning things around. Unfortunately.

Outhouses were the norm in rural Canada until at least the 1930's, and later in some places.

The Windsor Hotel in Lundbreck, Alberta, had a double-wide two storey outhouse from 1905 until 1963, when the hotel burned down. (but the outhouse survived the fire, and is now located in Calgary's Heritage Park)

my cousins had their younger years on a small farm near me (I am at the homestead where all but on of the grandparent's kids were born) did not have indoor plumbing in the 50's. One classic quote when they moved to the bigger city was about rejoicing over "Indoor Plumbing!!!".

The old house here was replaced after WW2 with the one I live in. The old one did not have indoor plumbing ... in winter, a pot in the basement. The quote I recall from my uncle was "Mom, the pot's full". (Grandma was a hard worker, and played the piano for their sing alongs ... they all loved Mom)

ha, I have some pictures of the first well drilled here, supposedly the guy was drunk, but got the job done. Not sure of the date, probably the 20's, maybe 30's. I guess they hauled water from the springs before that. That is part of why they bought 100 adjacent acres in the 30's, a dependable spring.

My father was delighted when my sister reached 16 years-old, and got a driver's license. Up until then, he had to drive us the 3 miles (some over dirt road) to get us to the school bus stop. The school bus then transported us the 10 miles further to school.

433 Guess I should read to see if Walton had any more specifics he was complaining about. San Diego's still pretty clean, safe, and nice to much better than nice. And most importantly, the negatives are - as they have been since the 1990s - almost entirely a direct function of growth/crowding.

Walton's from La Mesa, I think, went to Helix High. That area is less iconic middle class than it was when he grew up, but not bad really. Just east of where I play hockey.

Urban outdoorsmen? Sure. Nothing like LA or SF, but the geography's different, so apples/oranges. (cont'd)

440 We get to a lot of the area (San Diego's an enormous county, bigger than some states, and the actual city limits are enormous in extent, from the border to north of Miramar airbase). No issues. Downtown? More for youngsters anyway, but have had no problems when we do go there. Big bay is still beautiful, clean (much cleaner than when Walton was growing up here). A few months back I rode bikes with a friend around the entire thing from downtown, back across with the Coronado passenger ferry. Interesting and very little urban disamenity to be seen.

Beaches are great (going tomorrow, water's at its warmest for here, and of course tourists are gone). In a month it will be cool enough for hiking in the county, with numerous great options including 6K-foot elevation mountains.

In 2007 there were 3 enormous wildfires that came close to generating the largest insurance casualty event in US history. 200K+ evacuated from homes. Police had like 3 - 3 - calls for criminal activity related to this (burglary of commercial property, that sort of thing). Evacuees at the old stadium parking lot had to choose between free sushi and free massages, among other things.

Haiti/DR, same island, mostly just political differences?
There is no geographic magic to explain this.

Obama's half brother told Dinesh that he wished the Brits had stayed longer, to build them economically as they did South Africa (before Mandela and others destroyed it all, racist style). My African based friend said many felt the same ... the Brits built a system, the Kenyans and others were all about tribal warfare ... kill/destroy, not build.

464 Joe Kidd, funny, just tried the Doorly's XO recently. Finished the bottle, so I must have liked it! For not that much more, try the 12-yr sometime. Quite different. For sipping though, kind of a waste as a mixer. And for a bit less than the 12-yr, the Seale's 10-yr is excellent straight. More of an oaky/bourbon-ish profile than the 12-yr, which is lighter and sherry-influenced (aging barrels).

Foursquare, as a noted rum blogger has said, just doesn't make anything but good rum. I have yet to take a crowbar and pry open my wallet for their "good stuff" - since it starts in the $70s - but how they supply such excellent sippers in the $20s (or below) is amazing.

The proposed “Single Market Emergency Instrument” allows the European Commission to order EU states to reorganize supply chains, including expanding or repurposing existing production capacities or setting up new ones, and placing crisis-relevant goods on the market.

482 Miklos, aware of the TW&L founder's idiotic destructive politix. Make Herculean efforts to avoid using/patronizing zillions of things, for the same reason. But there are limits.

In any case, half my rum buying is now of much harder to find stuff TW&L has never heard of, fortunately 2 very good liquor stores in the LA area, one of which ships free to CA.

Joe Kidd, rum is a wildly wonderfully diverse thing. Tonight I nipped on my Martinique agricole (got at deep discount at TW in Temecula, would never pay the regular price), followed by some Hamilton 86 (both on the rocks, or one a them big spherical cubes). Very different.

TW screwed up, I picked up the Hamilton in a 1L bottle for the 750ml price - they had not coding for the larger bottle. I highly recommend the Hamilton (under $25, I think) for mixing in a dark n' stormy, the only mixed rum drink I generally make, and only in hot weather. It's not a bad sipper either. Guyanese semi-funk, depth. Another one for you to consider.

He had the cat backed into a corner of the chicken yard . I heard the racket and got there in time to see the cat trying to climb the fence . I had time to grab the pellet gun and nail the cat twice . I'm afraid next time it's the 22. Don't think I will tell the nephew

It sure seems (to me) that Poland/Hungary (Czech Republic?) are cutting edge for (Christian) Liberty in Europe. And I suppose we (USA, MAGA?) SHOULD be aligning with them first and foremost.

Yet the EU (unelected bureaucratic globalist, Stasi?) are able to give fines and demand obedience. Germany calling a lot of shots? I don't understand the whole dynamic.

All this comes from one article from Politico.

It looks like Trump's lawyers are being coy as they expect criminal indictment of Trump. The Gummint is playing a Catch-22 game here. However, the Gummint has already appealed to overturn the District Court judge's appointment of a Special Master.

513 Well, for the 6 people still here -

Vlad announced a mobilization (still have to look up the adjective, modifier, guessing it's "limited").

Prior to that, a long recitation of grievances and review of events since February, and 2014. He used "neo-Nazi" a lot, more than in previous statements on the subject.

Towards the end, he said that (unfamiliar to me) statements by western or NATO figures about use of nuclear weapons compelled him to remind everyone that Russia has a full (and more modern, than NATO) set of nuclear options.

He emphasized at the end that Russia's sovereignty and security would be protected by "all means" at Russia's disposal.

515 DefMin Shoygu was supposed to also give an address, Rossiya 24 didn't refer to it or pick it up, if it's happening.

Not a nothingburger, but pretty much what more informed observers expected. Some kind of mobilization.

This is an unsurprising bit of not-good news for "the west" and Kiev. At least as far as D & L are concerned, Russia (under any plausible leadership) cannot and will not abandon the russkoyazichniye lyudy (Russian speakers). Russia's mass and resources make this a bad bet for a long-term struggle, from Kiev's point of view, I would think.

One thing that is completely unknown to most westerners, I'll bet, is the constant, injurious and fatal, bombardment of civilian targets in Donetsk by Ukrainian elements (whatever their particular coloration or command). Intermittent but bad since 2014, now constant. Wonder if the US military planners and advisors ever raise this subject, or how they feel about it? Completely contrary to American values and long-standing military ethics.

Posted by: rhomboid at September 21, 2022 02:26 AM (OTzUX)

516 rhomboid.

I'm convinced of this. A 2nd Trump term would've avoided all of this. Russia would now be paying a half-billion a year in LEASE to Ukraine for a warm water port, as well as a 1/4 mile easement on either side of a Donbass land bridge to the port. Governed by and security forces by, joint Uke and Rus units. Same as what's done in Northern Ireland, even today.

U.S. of A. leases many of it's overseas bases. Trump would've sold it to Vlad, it's cheaper than war, makes for international good will, achieves a centuries long Ruski goal of a warm water port, and hey, everybody wins!

Bet you $100 against ANY odds, that's what would've happened.

As one of the 6, thanks for the translation.

TBH, I still blame NATO and the West for all this mess. Obama screwed with Ukraine's elections in 2014, NATO kept pushing to increase membership, especially near Russia's borders. Russia has a (well-deserved) history of paranoia when it comes to its borders but that was ignored. Also, the Rus' historical home/beginnings was in Kyiv.

I'm no fan of Putin, but the West blew a big opportunity in the early '90s with Yeltsin to create a post-communist rapprochement with Russia. But becoming more neutral with a former enemy was not good for the Military-Industrial Complex.

519 "He emphasized at the end that Russia's sovereignty and security would be protected by "all means" at Russia's disposal."

Russian sovereignty, but not Ukraine's. idk, Vlad is facing internal resistance, it seems. And even China/India were happier with "free trade" serving them pretty well. .. But no doubt there is much subterfuge and globalist intervention with their own goals .. so idk what is next.

I'm listening to that Trump in Poland speech "what we've inherited from our ancestors, has never existed to this extent, before. And if we fail to preserve it, it will never ever exist again, so we cannot fail ... " Yet DeepState is going all out to end Liberty.

520 Jim, I actually have no views on the question (what would've happened if Trump had his 2nd term, consecutively I mean).

For that I'd have to see what the NSC and Pompeo were saying/doing, if anything, about all this. Recall that Russia asked for/received direct bilateral talks in Geneva starting in March '21. Would kill to have the minutes and cable traffic on those negotiations. We have only the very unreliable public statements. This was clearly Russia's last gasp on Ukraine's military future, though it was always cast as a "European security architecture" and appeared to include lots of stupid unrealistic Russian demands on other subjects.

I'm not sure a port would be the issue, as with Novorossiysk and now Crimea, Russia has ample warm-water port capacity.

I do think even a US pledge to defer, slow-walk (after 30 years of same), or rule out Ukraine NATO membership would have forestalled the "special military operation". If the US/NATO had also stepped in to enforce, or sort out, compliance with Minsk I and II.

The disturbing thing is that Putin threatened to use nukes if the Russian Federation was attacked. After the referendums inevitably pass, continued Ukrainian military operations in the Donbass, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia will likely be classed as attacks on the Russian Federation.

Same here, Skip. I'm worrying about the water leaks in my place. The fix-it crew I was promised never showed, never called or wrote. I dashed off a line to my city councilman. He asks if I can be ready for a walk-through here at 11:30, and I plan to call in sick. Also I'm hoping I can get some legal advice as to whether I can start a movement here, #NoRepairsNoRent, and encourage no rent payments until they make our places liveable.

545 When I came home last night and found nothing had been done and nobody had called about the repairs, I was not even angry. I've realized I don't really care any more. I've checked out. You know how in black culture they say, instead of, "I live in [neighborhood]," they say, "I *stay* in [neighborhood]"? That's me. I'm just staying here, like in a lousy motel, until I can move.

548 Totally unrelated to anything: I currently live on the third floor of a six-story building with an elevator; I have a heart condition. Sometime around the first of October, they are replacing the elevator. It will be out-of-order for between 8 and 12 weeks. This morning, I'm going on my first round of 'stock-up' shopping. I'm dreading having to pull a loaded cart up two flights of stairs. But the good part is that it's not the heat of summer. I hope I survive having no elevator until around Thanksgiving (or beyond).

I did once, long ago when the management here at the time *took over my utility account*, somehow, so that for 2 months I never received a bill. I called up the power company and got it straightened out, but they still wanted me to pay for the power. Free Legal advised me to pay it, since I'd used the power -- even though *it was not in my name* for those 2 months. Utterly useless.

553 OK, from phone in bed, really my last.

Miklos - domestic audience. Many understandably feel Russia’s looked fairly pathetic in the war, and in addition the attacks on Russian territory have not met with any clear retaliation (electric grid in eastern Ukeistan being taken down the past week notwithstanding). Like earlier nuclear “alert” - just theatrics to convey will to his home audience.

ARC, have no idea about western nuke-rattling, just thought I heard that in his remarks. Putin seems fairly calm in this respect but hoo boy the Russian inferiority/victim pathology is virulent in Russia’s public square now - think some truculence in official posture is driven by this.

I appreciate the sympathy. But it is Queens. It's not like the management co. really gives a shit.

I had a pump of some sort in my bathroom wall go haywire last November, flooding the bathroom above me. No water in mine but . . . when they came to tear open the wall and floor to fix the pump and the drain pipe, the cast iron drain pipe in the floor was dated 1926. Then I had small drops leaking from the ceiling in both bathrooms (but at the same place in the wall), forming blisters in the paint. Told the super about it. They finally got around to fixing it last week. I lived with a musty, mildewy smell all that time.

Accomodation? Yeah, make me laugh.

...and I meant it.

If I'm going to take off today, I don't have to exercise so early. I'll do a little more coffee now. It's not even close to what actually went on. I had a colleague ask me a seemingly innocuous question about an ethnic German that croaked near where I live now, i looked him over, and went down a fucking Rabbit Hole.
I ended up doing a pile of research and we all got into trouble, shit was too 'hot' even now about Ethnic Germans outside The Reich Proper, and efforts to smooth the whole thing over for economic reasons, explosive.

573 With Smiley's People, the miniseries, it took about 6 viewings for me to realize that Smiley's initial goal was to out Karla and have to tortured to death, or 'worse', and his original goal is a brutal, cold revenge, for Karla to be eaten by his own ideology.
The key is the daughter, the schizophrenic, who tells the nuns 'Her father was a brigand who threw her mother off a mountain in the dead of night'.
Then Smiley allows Karla an out, to take care of his daughter.
Smiley tells Ann to get fucked, and...
Then what.
It's a vicious show and I watch it every now and then.

I'm not forgiving that.
