The Weekend Hobby Thread

There have been several Hobby Thread submissions lately. And we would like to share them with you.

IMG_0814.jpg

Hello MH. Someone suggested , after you posted my oil painting , that I do one for the TXMOME. I haven't painted for over ten years but your hobby thread got me to start again. I thought what better subject than a Moron still life. If up to par I'll donate to the MoMe to give away. Won't hurt my feelings if it's a thanks but no thanks. There are a number of moron memes here that I hope people will recognize. Thanks again . ----polynikes formerly anti doesn't matter formally a lot of other nics.

Thank you for this submission. What a great painting. And I'm happy that The Hobby Thread inspired you to pick up the brushes. I bet that this painting would be a hit at the TXMoMe. You should hit up Ben Had to hammer out the details.

Good morning, Mis Hum!

I wouldn't call what I have something I planned to collect - it just became a collection of old school gaming systems. I call it "The Great Wall of Gaming", pic attached. And yes, the stuffed Mario next to the top center TV is holding a Jolly Roger flag that I got for him at the NOVA MoMe.

If you'd like to use it & want some more background, let me know how many words you'd like and I'll gladly fill in the blanks.

Cheers!

Jeff, aka "Brother Bob"

Now that's what I call an unusual collection. I hope you are available today to tell us a little bit about it. Quite the Jolly Roger Flag! Thank you for sharing with us today.

I received the following from Open Blogger "Perfessor" Squirrel

Hello,

Don't know if you've featured this before on the Hobby Thread, but here's a cool video of someone putting together an ultra-realistic wargaming table featuring The Shire:

Pretty cool little project. At the end of the video, you can see into one of the little houses while it's lit up and really view some incredible detail.

Enjoy!

Talk about attention to detail!

8 I have been reorganizing a lot of my hobby supplies, and did a cull. I donated about 50 skeins of yarn and about 25lbs of fabric to a girls' crafting group near me. A lot of my supplies were gifts from people my age who had no idea what to do with their late moms' knitting and sewing supplies and hates to throw them out...voila, CN will undoubtedly love them. Well, no, but you can't criticize the departed's taste so I smiled and thanked. Some I love and use, but all the " homespun" acrylic needs to go, and how many needles can I have.

I gave this group several boxes of glass beads and journals in the past. They were happy.

41 I call on the Global Community to halt this travesty to the Forests of Germany Now !!! This will accelerate Global Warming.

Germany, the largest economy in Europe, is facing a catastrophic shortage of modern fuels, and Germans are searching online for firewood at a rate that is a multiple of previous records.

German industry will be brought to a grinding halt from this energy shortage and the economy forced to its knees. The industrial incapacitation that took years of American and British bombing campaigns and millions of Soviet casualties is now being accomplished much faster and less bloodily by simply shutting off Russian energy exports.

I have some artist-quality colored pencils, both wax and oil based. I plan to use them to learn how to blend colors for a certain effect. They are cheaper and more convenient than paints as a learning tool.

74 I've made myself a number of small notebooks (3 are half-sheet and one is quarter-sheet) this week. For the basic folding and stitching it only takes me about 10 minutes to make each one. I'm not putting on covers so that gets rid of the most time consuming aspect.

The purpose of the notebooks is for "journal RPGs", which are single-player role-playing games that advance the story using standard playing cards. After the card determines the next event, the player writes in the journal as their character.

The larger homemade notebooks are for a game called Alone Among the Stars as each "planet" takes several pages to describe and make sketches.

The smaller is for a character/world creation mechanism that I created myself. My test creation is "A energy-using damage dealer, with melee back-up, who lives in a world of gun-slinging talking dinosaurs."

I'm using a purchased bullet journal for the journal RPG I actually purchased, which is called One Day at a Thyme and is about living in one's dream cottage in a somewhat magical world. The activities listed are close enough to my IRL tasks that I intend to use the card draws to help me sort my to-do list.

One we are singing tomorrow is, "What a friend we have in Jesus", which was written by an Irishmen, Joseph Scriven born in 1819 who moved to Canada, He had some tragic loses in his life, and his faith sustained him. He became as very loved member of his community and was known as "The Good Samaritan":

Hard to digest in today's world of plenty the sacrifices this gentleman gave freely of himself because of his faith. This gentleman was rich and could have lived that way all his life, but yet he took a vow of poverty, and that meant real poverty in the 1800's - he was something else.

Yes; There are certain people I would like to meet if I could if the life to come. One is Joseph Scriven. Another hymn writer is Fanny Crosby, who went blind as a child and yet had an amazing life as a poet and hymnwriter, and said that she didn't mind being blind because she believed that she would see with new eyes would be Jesus.

135 it is-both every sad and yet inspirational, So many of the great hymns come out of deep, deep painful experiences when people really had to lean upon the rock of Christ to get them through.

I was reading earlier today about the hymn "Goin' Home'. I had always assumed that it was an African American spiritual. But it was actually composed by a composer inspired by Dvorak"s New World Symphony.

142 76 Ones of my hobbies is still collecting the stories behind favorite Christian hymns.

My father in law loved those, and collected the stories of almost every Baptist hymn ever written (plus many others) Of his children, my wife was the only one who shared this passion with him, so we inherited his files and materials, which are extensive. (he spent 50 years collecting them) Honestly, we've only looked at a fraction of it, we have 3 or 4 of those cardboard file boxes full, it's a daunting task.

basic cheap pipe from the cardboard display at the cash register at some random hardware store back in the middle '80s. display background was red, i think. pipe shape was similar to the one rockwell had in his self portrait. that pipe was nicely broken in, would hold the (jottle, cottle, pottle?) without letting it go out. and thank you for the memory jog, it was cpt. black & cavendish.
