Top Story

  • The EU has upheld the EU's 4.1 billion euro fine on Google. (Ars Technica)

Google was hit with the fine for anticompetitive practices in the way it forces Android phone makers to bundle specific apps, to make Chrome the default browser, to make Google the default search engine, and in forbidding any company with an Android license from also forking the open source Android codebase.

On the one hand, this smacks of opportunistic looting of a foreign corporation by a corrupt and decaying bureaucracy.

On the other hand, Google should have stayed awake during the antitrust proceedings against Microsoft, or at least read the CliffsNotes.

  • Don't buy the Dell Inspiron 27. (PC Magazine)

I have two of these and they were my workhorse desktops from 2017 up until May of this year when they got packed into boxes.

The original model had a 4k display, an 8 core Ryzen 1700, and Radeon RX 580 dedicated graphics. With all that they did tend to run a bit hot and one of them started overheating in the last few months, but I could probably fix that with a can of compressed air to blow out all the dust. (I did that before packing it in the box but haven't booted it up since then.)

They've released annual refreshes since then but not one has offered a 4k screen and the graphics options have been mediocre. Though with a 1080p screen and a laptop CPU in a 27" case they probably don't have the same cooling problems.

  • The Ryzen 7950X will hit 5.85GHz - on one core, in Antarctica. (WCCFTech)

Base clock is 4.5GHz, all core boost clock is 5.1GHz, single core boost clock is 5.7GHz, and peak clock if thermals permit is 5.85GHz.

That's stock, not overclocked, but unless you have amazing cooling you're unlikely to see anything over 5.7.

  • Have I been trained is a search tool that lets you explore all the training data that went into this new crop of AI image generators. (Have I Been Trained)

  • Superhuman AIs are going to kill us all. (Vice)

Probably not, but the paper behind the article does have a point. When you measure anything by proxy, you are promoting the proxy at the expense of the thing you are trying to measure.

Using college education as a proxy measure for success in life led to a flood of useless college degrees. And Google's Pagerank algorithm single-handled created the comment spam industry.

Similarly, current approaches are training AIs to cheat.

  • After legislation by Texas and Florida to force social networks to make their moderation rules public (among other things) was delayed by the courts, a third state has joined the fray: California. (The Verge)

So Minecraft is a multi-player adventure game with simple graphics where you mine stuff, craft stuff, and get blown up by creepers.

But at the same time that crafting system is so comprehensive that you can build fully functional computers at the transistor level. It's digital Lego.

Birds nest in roof vent? Birds do that kinda stuff just to make home-owning a constant adventure. A blocked vent will make drains... well drain slowly.

Plumbing vent on roof that is. Probably on back side of house, but they really should be on front side too. If plumbing issue is in drain on side of house with no vent above it, that's a likely cause of slow draining.

>>but the drains are straight out of the 18th century.

Well if you have a septic system vs a municipal sewer system then yes, welcome to 18th century living.

You might need your septic system and leach field maintenced, you got a clog in your drain system or you don't have enough air in your stack to drain properly.

Posted by: Thomas Bender at September 15, 2022 05:33 AM (up/3i)

31
If you’re experiencing a slow sink drain, there’s a good chance that there’s an airlock obstructing the water flow.

https://plumbingwizard.org/fix-airlock-sink-drain/

If Australia uses the British system it might be in your 'loft' and not vent through your roof.

You ain't just whistling Dixie. I've told this story before: Dad's an electrical engineer. Spent his entire life fixing circuit boards and diagnosing problems with medical computers and software (kind of hates computers on the day to day though.) Had a TV about 10 years ago. Would not start up. Hit the switch. No work. Looked online and said it was a fairly common problem with the model TV I had. Said what the problem was, but that in order to fix, if you sent it in, it would be $300-400. Asked Dad about it because the repair seemed beyond my skills. Dad asked me to get the capacitors (which was the problem) and he would take a look at it. Got the capacitors from Amazon $2, not a typo.) Dad comes over and gets out a big case of tools. Soldering iron. Little visor magnifier. We get the back off the TV and he removes the circuit board in about 2 mins. Takes a look, identifies the capacitors. He's narrating the whole thing. Cont.

49 Big flame war below. Nasty. Sad to see.

Posted by: SFGoth at September 15, 2022 06:00 AM (KAi1n)

50 He removes the old capacitors and installs new ones. 5 mins. Sidenote: he is smiling this entire time. Gets the board back in. Another 2 mins. Fire the TV up. Works perfectly. I am standing there amazed at the difference between expert/professional, and even the amateurish shit I watched on utube.

I ask Dad if I owe him anything. Nothing. He says this is what he loved doing, but his work never let him fix boards, always just replace the whole thing- which he always felt was wasteful. Watching him work, I can see why.

60 Cheap Chinese capacitors are the cause of many electronic failures. It is very satisfying to fix a malfunctioning appliance or computer by just replacing them, and a heck of a lot cheaper than replacing the board, which is what happens 98% of the time, if it's repaired at all.

I've replaced many on PC system boards. When our fridge starting acting up last year, sure enough, it was the caps on the control board. A lot of times you can see where they have expanded and the insides are starting to come out.

Your welcome. That's advice from a plumbers forum about Moen faucets, but I think it applies to all of them. The plumbers grease is critical, your new cartridge may come with a little tube of it. If not, get some, it's critical to getting the new washers to stay in place during insert.

I always cosidered "curb appeal" when I did residential plumbing for a couple of years. Tried to keep everything out of sight from the front. Couldn't always get away with everything on the back but I tried.

Then the HVAC guys would almost always screw it up. Ugly big white PVC muffler looking thing sticking out of the garage roof.
