Woke Fan-Baiting: How Hollywood Provokes Fan Backlash and Then Attempts to Monetize Hate

This twitter commenter defined the corporate media practice of "fan-baiting" -- pushing a divisive, alienating SJW message into an IP that never before had it in order to deliberately cultivate a backlash.

This backlash could then be used to claim that anyone who didn't like the new, woke regurgitation of the IP is a racist, sexist, homophobe, etc.

And then leftwing movie critics will be forced to give the crap reboot a positive review -- or otherwise, they'll be On The Wrong Side of History (TM).

"Fan-baiting" is a form of marketing used by producers, film studios, and actors, with the intent of exciting artificial controversy, garnering publicity, and explaining away the negative reviews of a new and often highly anticipated production. 1/10

Fan-baiting emerged as a marketing strategy in 2016/17, after fans of beloved franchises such as Ghostbusters and Star Wars objected to what they saw as poor writing choices, sloppy scripts, and cheap alterations to plot lines and characters for the sake of shock value. 2/10

Along side these critics, there was a small group of bigoted but vociferous commentators who objected to the inclusion of black and female actors in roles traditionally held by white male actors. Some of these individuals began publicly harassing actors. 3/10
Bigots have always attacked diversity on screen, but in a highly polarized political climate, instances of harassment on garnered disproportionately massive media coverage, which provided production studios with both free publicity and a new defence against actual critics. 4/10
Studios seized the opportunity to discredit criticism of poor writing & acting, insinuating that these, too, were motivated by bigotry. What used to be accepted as standard critiques were increasingly dismissed as part of the ignorant commentary of a "toxic fandom." 5/10
Soon, it became standard practice before release to issue announcements specifying diverse casting choices, coupled with pre-emptive declarations of solidarity with the cast whom they now counted on to receive disparaging and harassing comments.
Actors who are women and/or BIPOC became props & shields for craven corporate laziness and opportunism. The studios save money both by avoiding expensive veteran writers as well as by offloading publicity to news outlets and social media covering the artificial controversy. 7/10
"Fan-baiting" works. It brings in a new sympathetic audience whose endorsement is more about taking a public stance against prejudice than any real interest in the art. "Fan-baiting" also permits studios to cultivate public skepticism over the legitimacy of poor reviews. 8/10
"Fan-baiting" also compels reviewers to temper their criticism, for fear of becoming associated with the "toxic fandom" and losing their professional credibly, resulting in telling discrepancies between critic and audience review scores. 9/10
The true nature of "fan-baiting" is never so clear as when a script is well-crafted and audience reviews are accordingly positive, exposing the announcements, declarations of solidarity, & grooming of skepticism for what they really are: cynical corporate marketing tactics. 10/10
Put another way, media corporations have found a way to monetize the racism that they set their actors up to receive. 11/10

"Dr. Siren" continued:

Amazon knows exactly what it's doing. One of the first images released was of Disa [the heavyset black woman playin a dwarf]. On cue, a couple bigots said the predictable, allowing a giddy Amazon to release its pre-prepared scripted statement denouncing the "pushback". It's the new business model.

Fan-baiting isn't "black people getting cast". Rather, it's corporations banking on black people getting harassed to inflate publicity. Hence, diversity casting is in part motivated by the hope that the corporation can maximize harassment and, consequently, $$$.
Racism and sexism are the main issues. A secondary issue - one that is being overlooked - is corporate monetization of bigotry. Even while a studio purports to be "challenging bigotry" it is also counting on bigots being bigoted, and doing its best to direct them to the actors.
Solution: Media corporations should (a) hire experienced writers and give them the time required to write great characterization and plots for these actors, (unlike Amazon and Disney) and (b) accept critique rather than suggest all critique is motivated by bigotry.
As evidenced by the success and great reviews of HBO's "House of the Dragon" in comparison to Amazon's Rings of Power, both of which feature a diverse cast, the problem is the quality of writing, not the complexions of the actors.

For those of you who like this thread on #fanbaiting, know that it is an example of structural racism: the individuals involved may not be personally racist, but the profit motive of the corporations who employ them orients them to make decisions that harm racialized peoples.

(And I'll point out that Diversity doesn't seem like such a pressing concern when casting the Black Panther movies -- audiences aren't expected to clap at having random white actors playing African tribesmen there. If you ever watch a documentary about comic books, I'll tell you the comic book stories they all highlight. The brave choice to make the X-Men symbols for anyone oppressed or discriminated against. The brave choice to make the Green Arrow's sidekick Speedy a drug addict to both highlight the Then-Current Year issue, and to also defy the Comics Code Authority. The equally brave choice to tell a Spider-Man story about one of his classmates taking LSD and dying, the first comic since the fifties to be published without the Comics Code seal of approval. (The Comics Code banned all references to drug use, even if the story was obviously a "pro-social" message about the dangers of using drugs.)

They'll also talk about Batwoman, the first lesbian heroine, and Northstar, the first gay hero.

They'll also talk about when Steve Rogers resigned from his position as Captain America because Nixon was president, and maybe even talk about when Steve Rogers tracked down the head of the Serpent Society and found out... the head of the Serpent Society was an actual mutant snake-man who wore a mask to appear human and who was in fact the President of the United States at the time, Ronald Reagan.*

No seriously, look it up. They don't outright say it's Reagan but everyone leaves the issue understanding that Reagan is a mutant snake-creature super-criminal.

What they will not talk about is... the literally hundreds of classic comic book stories that comic book fans and professionals talk about and credit as classic and foundational. They won't talk about the X-Men vs. the Hellfire Club and "Wolverine Alone." They won't talk about the "If This Be My Destiny..." issue of Spider-Man. They won't talk about "The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man." They won't talk about the Sin-Eater, or the Hobgoblin, or Bane, or "Breaking the Bat-man."

Sorry, I mostly just read Spider-Man and Batman.

All they talk about is the comic book issues that pushed some kind of leftwing social message.

The people making these documentaries -- all of them; they're all exactly the same -- think that comic books are stupid and childish and toxically masculine and also, paradoxically, pretty gay.

So when they think of ways to make this insipid, embarrassing material interesting to a general audience, they all think the same thing: We'll emphasize the leftwing political messaging in comic books!

You know, the stuff that happened in 150 superhero comic books in the 75,000 superhero comic books that have been published since 1938!

And we'll only talk about those!

I bring this up because this is what non-fans of any IP think is the key to making the IP acceptable and worthy. They don't think Wolverine fighting Hulk is a worthy story; that's just stupid geek shit.

No, they think that gender-bending Wolverine into Girl Wolverine is worthy.

They think all of this shit is stupid, undignified, unworthy, and for man-children.

And the only way they can work on these properties and retain their (massive) self-regard is to infuse them with something that will make them worthy... such as incredibly blatant leftwing political and social messaging.

It's embarrassing to work on a Lord of the Rings derivative cash-in series. But what if you introduce black elves, black dwarves, and male elves who seem obviously "coded" as gay?

And what if you make the series' hero -- hold on to your seats; this is going to rock your world -- a mighty #GirlBoss warrior who can easily defeat opponents who outweigh her by 100 or even 400 pounds?

Now that makes working on a Lord of the Rings derivate cash-in series worthy and respectable. Now you're not just selling dwarves and elves and magic rings -- nah, son, now you're selling enlightenment and empowerment.

But I definitely do think the "fan-baiting" is real. I think everything the poster said is accurate, except for this being the original driving reason for the race-bending and infinite number of virtually-identical BadAss 90 Pound #Girlboss Action Heroines they've churned out the past eight years.

I think the original driving motivation for that is to make these properties palatable to "creatives" who absolutely despise and loathe these properties, and have no appreciation whatsoever for them or any feel for what made them popular in the first place.

And, of course: who therefore also hate the kind of people who like these properties.

Which raises the question:

Seems kind of obvious but... instead of changing these properties so that leftwing "creatives" who would rather be writing culturally-edgy leftwing HBO soap operas do not feel embarrassed to be associated with them, why not just change the "creatives" and hire people who actually like the material in the first place?

I believe that. I watched the first episode of She-Hulk. Terrible, but I watched it to hate-watch it.

I just cannot even gin up the energy to hate-watch Rings of Power. It's not even a real thing. It's some made-up bullshit loosely (very loosely) based on the appendices at the back of Return of the King.

It's literally fan fiction with a billion dollar budget.

So I can't even hate-watch it. It's nothing. It's not even worth being mad about.

* Here's a Captain America story the leftwing geeks don't talk about: Captain America, just in his civilian garb, is captured down in some South American country by some guerrillas or narco bandits or something. He's thrown into a cell full of trash, and then his jailers also throw in a poisonous snake.

They shut the door and wait for him to die.

Captain America snaps the snake's neck. Then he finds a straw or something like that in the garbage in the cell. He sticks it into the snake's poison glands and withdraws some of the poison into the straw.

Then he plays dead, pretending he'd been bitten by the snake and died from the poison.

When the guerrillas (or whatever) come into the room, he blows the poison out of the straw into one guard's eyes, blinding him with the acidic venom. The other guy he just bashes up.

That's some cool stuff, but the geeks don't talk about that.

No, for them, the only Captain America stories that exist are the ones where he told Richard Nixon he was quitting, and where he exposed Ronald Reagan as a mutated snake-man.

I am a pretty big LOTR movie fan. I was a really big Tolkien book fan when I was younger.

If they were to rewrite LOTR itself, Theoden wouldn't lead people into battle. He would follow Eowyn into battle who would do all the things better and be more masculine than Theoden.

Theoden was Tolkien's kingly ideal, and we all know that modern writers would set out to destroy him as a character. But it would be fine because Tolkien is old, dead, and white, and his views don't match with today's views.

Honestly, right now, I'm in a Stargate SG-1 rewatch, which isn't the best show, but it had 10 seasons, and I never originally watched them all, so what the heck. It gives me a reason for my Netflix subscription.

Other than that, I'm watching Ree Drummond's Big Budget Battle (not bad), Press Your Luck and Family Feud (b/c my kid LOVES these shows - he even got me to apply to PYL for next year), and It's Compliplated, which isn't a bad concept show, but it's a bad concept show...but there is something compelling about good chefs making terrible food b/c they limit chefs too much. I mean allergies are one thing, food preferences are another. Putting them together and then picking the cuisine, and no time to plan or cook, and you start getting bad food...which is new to watch! I mean, it's an ego boost to watch this show, which is probably why I do it...

Give me a short, well-crafted story in a world that doesn't quite come together (like, say, Oblivion) rather than a rambling, directionless story that never ends as we discover new nooks and cranies of details.

It's also interesting that there's virtually no worldbuilding in House of the Dragon. Something like 80% of it takes place in King's Landing.

Thor 4 was the worst superhero movie since Batman V Superman. It's horrid film-making in all senses.

Taika had a good very dark movie that could have been made with the 1st 5 minute scene. But he punted that for vignettes with no script, no character development (sacrificed for nonsensical cameos), no tonal balance, and bad humor...it was like he phoned in that movie and took his paycheck right to the bank...

Here they have the perfect opportunity to show what true color blind societies would look like.

They have Humans, elves, dwarves and brandyfoots.

The truth is, if you want to depict a color blind society, even if at one point in time they had different colors, once they start mixing, all the colors would blend into a singular color, and after 5 to 10 generations there would be no pure whites or dark blacks. There would be an in between color that would be tilted to one side or the other based on starting populations.

yeah that's the thing, they may think they're "winning" because people like me don't talk about this as much as we used to, but that's because... we're completely lost as customers. We don't care any longer, at all.

my actual fandom isn't comic books or marvel, it's James Bond. but they lost me with Spectre. Just gone. Poof. I was already pretty sick of Daniel Craig and the simultaneously boring and yet not at all realistic tone of the movies since the first great one they did (Skyfall was pretty good, but as it turns out, just an aberration), but Spectre absolutely ended my fandom of James Bond.

Dark skin also protects from sunburn, but if that isn't an issue there's no reason an underground race couldn't have dark skin. But there's absolutely no reason for variability from a race that was created by a lonely god in a cave starting with seven individuals.

On my news this am they played a snippet of the new Brad Pitt/Margot Robbie film about 1920s or -'30s Hollywood called Babylon. One shot shows a tall black man in a 3-piece suit, clearly supposed to be an executive or businessman of some kind. I'm not buying it. The major studios then would not have had any black executives. There were black businessmen then, lawyers, doctors, funeral directors, yes. But they mostly served their own communities, not MGM or 20th-Century Fox.

No Time to Die doesn't really make sense. It's really poorly structured. The bad guy is generic and bland as fuck. It's supposed to be this extended goodbye for Craig as Bond, but his big goodbye sequence with Felix Leiter got rewritten to include Ana De Armas instead. She looks good in a dress, but when she nopes out of the film all of a sudden and then we pick up with Leiter again to get his goodbye, you realize that a massive rewrite happened.

It's a total mess of a film, and I do not get any defense of it.

166 I agree that the original impetus behind all the Diversity! in recent Hollywood product was (perhaps) a genuine wish to increase diversity in casting. But after many of these projects starting flopping, they hit on the strategy of trying to shame fans into watching it.

In many cases the new stuff is flopping just because it isn't very good. For one thing, too many characters, especially the Girlbosses, are just too darn invincible.

The best stories place their lead characters in so much jeopardy that you feel worried for these people whom you've grown to care about. But in most modern heroic movies, the female leads (and they're almost always female leads now) aren't allowed to be vulnerable. Sure, they may take a hard hit now and then. But we know they are going to triumph, and usually with not a lot of difficulty. It's not thrilling; it's boring. It's like the difference between watching a boxing match that's a nail-biter for 15 rounds and one with a knock-out in the first.

I just wish the social-media critics focused more on the flaws that have nothing to do with identity issues. By bringing up the out-of-place diversity, they play right into the studios' hands.

Glad I skipped it. I quit when they killed Anthony Hopkins's character. I knew it was going to go nowhere good.

Yeah it wasn't just over the top silly mary sue-ism (see boys, see, girls just do it better, it took the whole fellowship to beat a troll last time and GaladrielSue can do it alone in seconds!). It makes no sense. All the elves are supposed to be badass, but they all look incompetent except our heroine. And worse, several got caved in and mangled in the fight but are all perfectly fine after the battle like they are NPC followers in Skyrim. Just had to crouch down and take a breather, then are fine after the fight!

The whole effort to make Craig's Bond films one big thing kept going in fits and starts. Casino Royale fed directly into Quantum of Solace, but Skyfall seems to take place 10 years later at least and has no connection to the first two beyond just being another Bond adventure.

Then, Spectre (which I like), does the last minute, in the introduction of the third act, thing of trying to tie literally everything to Blofeld, and it makes no sense and is easily the worst part of a movie that I actually enjoy. Then, No Time to Die takes the worst part of the previous film and goes further with it, up to Bond still being enamored with Vesper, even though she had been mentioned (by someone not Bond, no less) a grand total of one time in the previous two films.

Yep. Several folks pointed that out. In the Fellowship of the Ring (Jackson's film), everybody in the Fellowship gets a moment to shine during that fight, even the Hobbits. Of course, they were all major characters.

In Galadriel's boss fight against the snow troll, she's the only character that seems to have a name at all, so she gets to do all the fighting.

Yeah, that's a good analysis. I liked Casino Royale, despite Craig, because other than the pre-credits scene it was almost exactly straight out of the book (replacing the absurd Baccarat with the out of context Texas Hold'em). So it worked well and was a good story.

But He was in 1½ good Bond movies (some of Skyfall was good), and never felt right. He was Jason Bourne with a 007 and bashed his way through things Bond would have finessed. And had zero chemistry with ANY of the women.

I think Hollywood kind of did everybody, especially IP Geeks, a huge favor these last few years by making it VERY CLEAR that all reboots/reimaginings are soulless, worthless, meritless cash-ins and you'd have to be a fucking monkey to give a shit about them.

Like "Prey." I hear it's "decent." Okay, but... I mean, do we need another predator? Spoiler alert: We do not. We never did.

It's bizarre to me now that I used to get excited to hear "They're doing another Terminator movie." Why did I ever care about that? I saw the first one, it was great. Did I need more? Granted, T2 was good, but this idea that we need additional restagings of the same basic movie with a different cast and slightly (very slightly) different plot progressions just seems INSANE to me now.

Hollywood used to make tons of money making Bible Movies when they cared about money. When they stopped making them alternative directors did and made money. Now they don't let that happen anymore.

The video games seem to be holding on to some kind of artistic and technical quality, but I was never a gamer, and I don't really "get" them.

I always loved music and movies, and that's all just over. I find myself going through older stuff I haven't heard or seen before, up to a point, but mostly just more and more books.

My kids don't even watch new movies or listen to new music anymore, except rarely. They like this-or-that YT'er, but that's for like 30sec at a time and then forgotten forever.

It's cultural blight, and it's real, and it's not that fabulous.

Most people have no idea that this is how Hollywood operates. Unless you're a well-established writer, you don't stand a chance of breaking in if you're over 35. They think only young people can understand other young people, and they think young people are the only audience worth writing for.

And there is the added element of who do they want to hang out with/screw. Many of the best writers are not exactly attractive, so it's rare for them to get hired in Hollywood. Be young, good-looking and vacuous, and you too have a chance to be a Hollywood screenwriter! And nowadays, being "diverse" is super important too.

But that's the thing: the LoTR we know is a "decayed" version of "Ye olden days." Sauron's a pale imitation of Morgoth; the Elves faced off against Balrogs by the multiples; heck, the Elven King went mano-on-mano against Morgoth and almost won. A cave troll is not going to bother a figure in that "power class." So that's not a problem.

The problem is if they build up the troll as a "big deal" to someone like Galadrial or Elrond. No, they should have put her fighting a Balrog or a dragon like her kin Earendil. That's the fight she should be having. Not a puny cave troll. A Cave troll is a problem for dwarves and humans and hobbits. Not mythical Elven goddesses, essentially, which is what Galadriel is.

So the whole premise sounds stupid. Any prequel to the LoTR should be far more "powered up" as it were.

Numenor would never have had a problem taking on Sauron and the Ringwraiths in a fight. Even Sauron knew that.

Tolkien has her drive Sauron - the Necromancer - from Dol Guldur just after the Hobbit time period in some unspecified manner - could be elf troops, probably troops plus magic. She does it again in the LOTR time frame in the books, as part of the effort to drive off Sauron and his armies.

All her siblings and parents and heroes and stuff from the 2nd age are pretty much gone. Compared to Feanor or Gil-Galad or the rest of the Elves from the 2nd Age? not likely. Galadriel knows she would be corrupted by the one ring. I don't think some of the Elven kings that fought or went back to Valinor would have been. Or someone like Luthien.

Finwe would totally smoke Sauron. He almost beat Morgoth! And any of Feanor's sons would have been able to disassemble Sauron's rings with no problem, and probably a few more elves for that matter.

This hits on one of my biggest sore spots with most modern fantasy-superhero action movies. EVERY single fighter uses the "Crouching Tiger Leaping Dragon" fighting style. It was thrilling when that movie first came out (22 years ago). But it's boring as hell now.

And yes, Galadriel was not a sword-fighter. No need to dirty her hands. She was a goddess.

They took all that was fascinating about the Galadriel in Jackson's LotR movies and replaced it with... yet another Mary Sue. Problem is, it would be harder to write a true Galadriel character. She would have to be far more subtle. All they know how to write is Mary Sues.

I've seen black actors playing white characters in a couple of filmed Shakespeare plays, e.g.., Henry IV, Part I had a black C of E bishop.

I got used to it, & it didn't distract. Now, had it been the title role, that might've been too much for me.

One of the big problems with wokecasting is that they're using it as a replacement for actually working on their craft. Put a proper, skilled and talented actor in the role and no one's gonna care that he's the wrong color.

Obviously, we're not talking about this world--although we are trying to arrange something that could appear a possible overlay onto our experience.

There could be people with a King-like "shining" experience, again we're talking mainly about an "awareness of outside power" which gets interpreted as an awareness of God. So, the main link in this power is awareness.

Also, it's kind of one of the dynamics of this system that life force (something) beats animation/imitation/hollowness. But only when amplified. So the main effect of amplifying life force is to combat the hollow things that flee the positive power of this channeled force, who are susceptible to it?

454 So fan baiting worked twice with two huge minority movies. 'Wonder Woman" and "Black Panther". There were actual female only showings of WW and there were charities raising money to send black children to watch BP. I said at the time there was no way to know if it was a good movie or even how the public felt about BP until the third or fourth money when all the politics had drained out of it. That appears to be where we are now, and I don't know if they can ever gin up that kind of support again, but Pedowood is stupid so it will take them a while to figure this out.

456 As one of the resident comic-book guys on the Sunday book thread, I can confirm that Ace's comic book rant rings true. And it hurts. I've been trying to read The Thunderbolts comic from the late 90's/early 00's, and it got bad after the original writer left. The replacement writer wasn't nearly as good, but even before that sunk in, he poisoned the well with some heavy-handed (and absolutely stupid) lefty virtue-signaling.

It even gotten to the point where I don't buy anything new from the mainstram, and even second-guess myself when making classic purchases! ...Well, this The Question omnibus looks cool, but it's by Denny O'Neil, who did the preachy Green Arrow/Green Lantern what-have-you-done-for-the-black-man book, and he probably had a chance to really cut loose on this Question series, so...Do I really want to risk it?
