You Can't Spell GAINZZZ Without ZZZ's

testosteroneprescription.jpg

A short GAINZZZ thread, about sleep.

This is no news to most of you, but I just figured this out. Yes, I know, I should have known this from far earlier.

The human brain is not designed to be awake past midnight.

[A] new research review, recently published in the journal Frontiers in Network Psychology, suggests that staying awake past midnight may have implications that stem beyond needing an extra cup of coffee the next day. In fact, the study authors suggest that the mind simply isn't "designed" to be awake into the wee hours of the night.

While prior studies have explored the effects of sleep deprivation on cognition, the new research focuses more specifically on what happens to the human brain when it's awake past midnight.

The resulting "Mind After Midnight" hypothesis states that the mind isn't set up to operate as it does in the daytime, and as a result, we're more likely to make impulsive and even "risky" decisions.

In the new review, researchers analyzed a large number of studies investigating the effects of nocturnal behavior on the mind and how the body's circadian rhythm might influence brain function.

The paper revealed that numerous physiological activities occur in the brain (when awake during nighttime) to contribute to poor cognition. The authors highlighted that being awake during the night is associated with an increased risk of:

suicide and self-harm
engaging in violent behaviors
use of alcohol and illicit substances
higher food intake

According to the researchers, our molecular levels, neuronal activities, and responsivity are attuned to our "usual behavior" of wakefulness during the day. At nighttime, however, these same parameters are attuned to the "usual behavior of sleep."

"If we are awake at these times, neurophysiology is prone to foster behavioral dysregulation, especially when these time-of-day effects are combined with sleep loss or disruption," the study authors wrote.

I was listening to Ya Boi Zach a few months ago, and he said he'd made an effort to go to sleep earlier, and it had really improved his life. I remember him specifically saying, "You may think you're naturally a night-owl, but you're not; no one is naturally a night-owl."

A big reason to sleep earlier is that the body is programmed to release growth hormone during sleep, with its biggest pulses occurring before midnight. I've heard that the body produces most growth hormone (which has anti-aging effects and is generally a good thing) between 10pm and 2am at night, during sleep. So if you're not sleeping at this time, you're missing out.

I started making an effort to be asleep by 12 (or 12:30) and it's been an upgrade in my life. I really have to be asleep by 11pm. That's the next step. Maybe night owls generally have that sickly, NeverTrump appearance because they're missing out on growth hormone during the night.

So I don't know, if there are any "night-owls" out there, maybe try telling yourself, as Zach told me, "You're not really a night-own, you're just in the habit of sleeping at the wrong time," and see how it works.

One bit of advice from Andrew Huberman about readjusting a sleep schedule, which 100% works: If you get up earlier than usual, and want to set that as a new wake-up time, make sure you go outside and get strong sunlight when you first wake up. There are neurons in your optic nerve which act as "zeitgebers" or time-setters, and key on strong sunlight. Once you do that for just two or three days in a row, your body will in fact reset itself so that that time becomes the new natural wake-up point, and your body and brain will also begin shutting down earlier to accommodate the new wake-up point.

That really works.

Here's a good What I've Learned about sleep routines:

I'm taking two of the supplements he mentions, Theanine and Glycine. I started taking them at around the same time so I can't tell you which is more important. But I can say that since I started taking them, my Fitbit sleep tracker tells me that my deep sleep and REM sleep have gone up from around 60-75 minutes a night on average to 80-110 minutes. Last night I got almost two hours of both. And those are the stages of sleep that are most important (and which people get less of as they age).

I suspect that Theanine is the more important of the two as far as deep sleep and REM. But glycine is supposedly important for getting more uninterrupted, "efficient" sleep. I need both so I take both.

Lowering the temperature at night definitely works. No question on this one. I don't know if you really have to get down to 64 or 65 like he says, but I put the thermostat down to 69 at night. (69!)

I just got chamomile and I'll see how that works.

Oh here's something I tried to stop having to go to the bathroom so much during the night: Obviously, stop drinking, mostly, except to wet your mouth, two or three hours before bedtime. But also, if you have to take pills or supplements or night, take them three hours before bed, instead of at bedtime. (Some supplements or pills, like a sleeping pill, must be taken closer to bedtime, but anything than can be moved earlier, should be moved earlier.)

I think your body has to work to digest them and that results in having to pee. Having shifted my pill-time earlier, I think I'm doing that peeing before bed, and less after I go to sleep.

Eh, give it a try. I think I'm on to something. This works.

I'm generally continuing my GAINZZZ though I still haven't started lifting again.

My experiment with weighting down my arms with 8 pounds of weights (each)H when I go out on hikes does seem to be working. It's essentially a low-weight but high-time-under-tension farmer's walk. It definitely is giving me some GAINZZZ in the shoulders.

But we're not here to talk about my minor GAINZZZ. We're here to talk about yo' GAINZZZ.

So what are your GAINZZZ? Any PLANZZZ for a new program or RECCOMENDATIONZZZ for the group?

25 There is someone, forget the name, that noticed people before electricity, etc. had very different sleep patterns. Basically, she (from memory), discovered that for centuries in Great Britain, people had a pattern of going to sleep soon after dark, waking up in the middle of the night and staying awake for an hour or two, and then going back to sleep until daylight. I am not sure how widespread this was but it was apparently a thing at least among the literate that wrote about it.

116 A big reason to sleep earlier is that the body is programmed to release growth hormone during sleep, with its biggest pulses occurring before midnight. I've heard that the body produces most growth hormone (which has anti-aging effects and is generally a good thing) between 10pm and 2am at night, during sleep. So if you're not sleeping at this time, you're missing out.

3. Instead of getting up to use the bathroom, you probably don't really need to use it, you just think you do. Close your eyes and go back to sleep. This one really works.

4. Quit making excuses for reading more on the net or in a book or on the phone. You can do it tomorrow.

Now, after years, and at the ripe age of 29, I have a 17.5" neck and am XL. Your body will adjust. Just pay attention to what your joints tell you.

The question for noobs is what are your goals. Apparently, lifting in the 5 rep weight range will keep your size down. If you want to be bigger, then hit more reps at your top weight.

145 One bit of advice from Andrew Huberman about readjusting a sleep schedule, which 100% works: If you get up earlier than usual, and want to set that as a new wake-up time, make sure you go outside and get strong sunlight when you first wake up.

Good advice for anyone, really. The advent of the electric light has done bad things for sleep patterns for everyone.

I was getting like 12-14 hours of sleep a day, without any ill effects. I don't know if it was my body catching up or what. Or even if you CAN "catch up" sleep that way.

I was sleep deprived almost every day for about 10 or 12 years and didn't appreciate the seriousness of it. Until I almost had that serious car wreck and decided I had to do something.

I've been working on improving my sleep the last 4 years and have found my memory has improved tremendously as well as my driving. But the things that happened when I wasn't sleeping enough are gone, they don't come back. But the things that have happened in the last 4 years, my memory of them is much better and improves all the time.

It's a relief. I was afraid I was an early-onset dementia patient.

261 I'm skeptical. At a minimum, there are undoubtedly some people who function better at night than do others. I used to be one of them. In fact, there was a clear split in my family.

Also, when we were younger, my wife and I, every vacation, would ratchet our bed times later and later, so by mid week we'd be up all night, and wake at noon. Made going back to work brutal.

Now, maybe we were not at our sharpest after midnight. But we definitely were better off than others.

But that's no longer true. With years, we crash earlier and earlier.

270 I had really bad insomnia, and what finally helped me was practicing sleep hygiene. You can Google it, but basically
1) Wake up the same time every day - yes that means no sleeping in the weekends.
2) Get some natural sunlight when you wake up. East facing windows help. Failing that make the room bright (it worked for me in Anchorage AK in November).
3) Avoid any caffeine and even sugars after 9 PM.
There is a lot more to it, but those three helped me to regulate my sleep and sleep better.

My brain has two modes. Maybe it's left side right side stuff.

If I lay down and think about the day or tasks, I stay awake. Anything that results in stress or worry about accomplishing a task keeps you awake.

If you, instead, tell yourself a story, it puts your brain into a completely different mode and you fall asleep. In other words, imagining a story makes you fall asleep.

How do I know this works? It's been working on kids for eons.

Its best overall for your body and state of mind to as best you can keep a very specific schedule at least 6 days a week. But for other people, they don't wake up because they have to go to the bathroom, they wake up for some other reason and NOTICE their bladder is full and then decide to use the bathroom. Those people he said, they recommend see a psychologist, because they have something else going on.

I have found that if I put off something that needs done until the day I have to present it, then I have more trouble sleeping and I just get up and do it and accept that that day I won't get much sleep.

Posted by: CloseTheFed at September 23, 2022 04:59 PM (LeNk3)

300 I guess I'm lucky - I've never had a problem falling asleep. I just lay down and, a few minutes later, I'm out. Noise doesn't bother me, I sleep right through it. Unless it should be there - like if a generator goes silent but should be on. That'll wake me up.

I worked midnights for years and, as a result, learned to sleep during the day, but I must say - that sleep isn't the same. I never felt fully rested after that.

Something I've read about sleep, and it makes sense, is the 'housekeeping' crew arrives in your brain and cleans up the mess if you give them enough time to do their job. Try going without sleep for a day or two and tell me if you agree or disagree.

If you are then able to intelligently form a sentence. Odds are you won't be able to. Something is going on and it may be the clue to Alzheimers.

343 interesting about that 10PM to 2AM time being important. My sleep has been fair, usually ~11PM, but I fall asleep watching You-Tube on my smart TV, since it gives me an easy selection of things I like.

But I often wake up around 3AM, at least for a little while. So good to know maybe I already got the biggest benefit. But when I lost 30 pounds doing keto, it really helped to chart everything, weight, ketones, glucose ...

So I just ordered a fitbit 5, so it will give me some record to judge my progress. Shoulder pain still there but keeps getting better just doing light weights every other day, and some stretches. I always hated doing weights, but pain is worse than very brief workouts.

372 Our shut down routine to get back to a good sleep schedule is a "light fast".

No electronics or electric light after 4:30 pm.

Candles are fine. The light level in the home drops naturally and it helps enormously toward the body shutting down and just being ready to sleep.

Strongly recommend.

Oh yes. IIRC, the difference between nightmares and night terrors is the place in the sleep cycle they occur. Night terrors happen during that stage of sleep when you are paralyzed, so the not being able to move factors into the bad dream. Waking up from one of these is the worst!

Gainzzz. I gained a 'Buddha Belly' over the winter. My usually increased level of summer activity didn't take it away despite heavy-weighted backpack hikes, kayaking, and lowered caloric intake. But there sitting on my deck is my 'slant bench' which had gone unused for a year.

I'm cheating like hell on the situps, but 'Buddha' is disappearing. Along with any desire to eat more then a 2,000 calorie a day diet.

Tight abs are one hell of a 'feedback' (or feedless) mechanism.

Sleep grounded about 5 nights a week. Conductive ankle band on a long cord. It's a bit scratchy, so I don't use it every night. Too cheap to buy a sheet...

Sleep under a lightweight weighted blanket. Mine's handmade and is about 36 x 40" and weighs around 7 lbs. So not the heavy duty anti-anxiety type, but I'm convinced it deepens sleep.

Sleep mask, because even with heavy drapes we're still pretty light polluted.

I'll have to try that. I've tried to do what I guess is called "Lucid Dreaming", where I semi wake up in a dream, but then I take control of what I want to be in the dream. So make a positive outcome, especially if it is a negative dream with some sort of conflict. (which as crazy as the world has become, seems to happen more often in my dreams)

I was on some meds for a while and I would have these incredibly textured and realistic dreams of doing things like sitting in the back seat of a sedan parked on the street, with a couple other people, having a conversation.
It was like the iMax version of My Dinner With Andre in my head.

my God, I've had recent fucked up dreams. Like I dream I wake up and check the clock. Usually if I take a long snooze or whatever.

I've also started "noping" out of dreams, if shit goes sideways, which is funny. I just decide "this is a dream" and I either wake up or restart it.

This also results more often than not with me falling asleep around 8:30 PM.
I used to be a night owl. Not anymore, thanks to my kiddos, and my wife.

There's another thing that I noticed, being a fucking lunatic night owl. When you're tired and staying up late and you're really sleepy, you're going to find yourself having thoughts and losing them. It turns out it's because you're kinda sorta in a near dream state and your short term memory is starting to turn off (which is what happens in sleep state and dreams, which is why reading in dreams is trippy, the words are always changing).

Anyway, it's nearly like a dementia if you focus on getting your thoughts back. It's a clear sign to go the fuck to sleep because I find it's an unhappy state to be in, holding on but losing every train of thought after a few minutes.

473 OT, but commodity prices collapsed today. Platinum (used in lots of technology production processes) was down nearly 6 %. That's a mind-bender. Oil was down nearly 5 %, again a huge crash. These price drops, due entirely to demand destruction, are forecasting a bigger and longer-lasting recession than at present. We are really, seriously in economic trouble and the Biden Kleptocracy seems blissfully unaware. So, for that matter, is the despicable Republican Party.

476 I would love to see what, how and when this person eats as well as how often she gets off her bum during the day. I workout daily, it’s an occupational hazard of owning an exercise studio, and I eat healthy 70-80% of the time because this is very achievable and sustainable. I am no fanatic. But I do have abs at age 51…I mean 29, and 3 kids. Left to my own devices, I would be porky pig, I am short and have curves, my body likes to hold fat for future unspecified potential famines. So maybe less Cheetos and more walks?
