Wednesday Morning Rant [Joe Mannix]

Low Trust

A common theme in much of the news over the past several years is the insincerity, dishonesty and outright fiction masquerading as fact. As is often said about this here, "everything is fake." The phoniness extends to all things and permeates every facet of public life. Virtually everything is, in short, a lie.

When people realize this, it is often traumatic. As Naomi Wolf put it in her column:

But now, when I did the exact same thing for which they had long applauded me, I was cast immediately into social outer darkness.
Why? Because the times had changed.
And because the scale of the revenue generated for them by supporting flat out lies, had changed.

Sometimes it's a grift. Sometimes it's ideological. Sometimes it's just rank, reflexive dishonesty. Causes aside, deceit is now the norm and the high-trust civilization we have built over the past several centuries will not survive this shift from default trust.

We have gone from "trust unless you have reason not to" to "trust but verify" and now, increasingly, "distrust unless verified." Next up is "distrust, period" and then the transition from high trust to moderate trust to low trust to zero trust will be complete. What will that look like? We can look to other extant low-trust societies for examples.

What can we expect as trust continues to die? Self-defense, for one. A man's home is his castle, but in a low-trust society it must also become his literal fortress. Walls and gates, bars on windows and brick rather than wood construction will become more common. Crime is the norm and cops are at best unhelpful, so it's on you to man your own defenses. Vigilantism grows.

Defense against fraud becomes important, too. The price on the shelf isn't the price the computer rings up. You'll have to take notes and protest when the store tries to rob you. The ingredients list on the package won't reflect reality. Defending your money gets harder, too. The bank will steal it or just lock it up. So will the government. Cause? Evidence? Why do those matter? Cash usage will increase and the First Bank of Stearns & Foster will make a comeback.

Black markets will grow and thrive. Although people can be arbitrarily eliminated from the legal markets without cause, they still need to eat and wear clothes and so the black market will fill the void. It will fill that void at great expense and risk, but it will be effective.

And everything slows down under the weight of individual defense, protection and verification. Everything also gets more expensive. Low-trust societies are, in short, poor and inefficient. They have to be. You can't layer complexity - and broad-spectrum wealth - atop a foundation of sand.

There is a reason why honesty is one of the Ten Commandments. "Thou shalt not bear false witness" is there for a reason. As our transition to low-trust continues, we will all get a visceral reminder of why that is.

I suspect you're ahead of the curve. Most people, I think (based on no empirical data but on my own experience, so grains of salt and whatnot), are on the threshold between "trust but verify" and "distrust unless verified" and bouncing between them.

Even when I watched contemporary entertainment, the awards shows didn't interest me. Now that I don't, they interest me even less. And maybe I'm missing out on good stuff, but Hollywood has been producing such dreck that I sort of doubt it. I don't consume their products, so why would I consume their industrial awards galas?

I think the concept of trust has to include "respect" - as in, respect, or have reason to respect, the technical competence, seriousness, and responsibility of people who make up institutions/perform tasks.

So while I actually trust my doctor*, after one episode during The Great Idiocy, I don't see him as someone to rely on in a technical sense, sadly, for all medical issues. Of which, fortunately, I have about zero. He was thinking out loud/communicating when I entered his office and went through some routine like "let's see we've both had our shots so we don't need to wear a mask".

This was before it was clear the "vaccines" did not prevent transmission or infection, I think. But, of course, 70 years into research showing masks lacked benefit.

* guess he's "my doctor", have never really had one fortunately, he's the gatekeeper/primary, a good guy, we actually end up talking about other things more than the business at hand usually

A high-trust society can only flourish if the members of that society have shared aspirations and ethics. The beginning of hyphenated Americans and the elites' scorn for the concept of the melting pot started the downhill slide to the low-trust society.

104 I remember seeing a clip from a 2018 (I think) news story about how voting machines could be manipulated. They brought in 10 everyday people to just input a vote and keep track of their individual vote. Within minutes, a hacker had manipulated the results right in front of them.

One of the women who participated started tearing up. It was overwhelming to her to see how little agency she really had in a system that seems designed to enable this type of fraud.

This is how I feel about almost everything I believed throughout the bulk of my adult life. I've voted for W, knocked on doors for Romney, pulled a lever for McCain, and now realize I was just a dupe and always have been.

What will it take to regain my trust? Nothing. Which is fine because they don't really want it anyway. They just want my compliance.

Three unions are holding out for whateverver reason, and if they concede, well, we're gonna be paying a lot more for...everthing.
If they strike, the pain happens much faster.

So it's down to no strike=deep, long-lasting pain in the wallet, that eventually people will accept, or a strike, which will bring it all crashing down (if brandon doesn't send the Army in, like Truman did).

1) PATCO employees were not allowed to strike. I don't think the same applies to railway employees.
2) There are a LOT more railway employees, so they'd be harder to replace in adequate numbers/

Failing open is systemic, for now. That is changing.

For an example, I used to work for a credit card processing firm. They take the transaction, log and record it, hand it off to the network (Visa, etc.) for validation against the issuing bank, log the result, return the result to the terminal, all of the backend processing, etc.

When a connection to the network (like Visa) went down, the default behavior was to blindly approve. Most people aren't over the limit and most transactions aren't fraud, so blind approval was an acceptable risk. Fraud or limit violations would be arbitrated later.

As that kind of thing changes, those processes and systems become more brittle because they can no longer assume trust to overcome faults.

Yes, it is. I have a fairly liberal interpretation of that commandment, and I view it as a demand for general honesty. But even taken literally, false accusations, specifically, are one of the most damaging forms of deceit and its specific prohibition makes a lot of sense. Russia and China are much more pragmatic than Western society. Both have built/rebuilt empires by using the West's insatiable greed against it. They are nationalist states, willing to set aside ideological differences for practical gain, all the while positioning themselves as indispensable to their foes.

The West depends almost entirely on China for manufacturing. Most of Europe and Africa depends entirely on Russia for energy and food. When famine hits Africa, the mass migration will finish off Europe with no missiles necessary.

I mostly agree. The reason the left has been able to get away with as much as they have is largely because the media runs cover for them as their propaganda arm. Everything from the BLM/antifa riots to the virus to stolen election to government corruption.

I think it's twofold. One element is what you described, but the amount of routine deceit also increased. Prior to the coming of television and then the consolidation of the newspaper business, there was a ton of competition. They all lied a lot, but they weren't all telling the *same* lies at all times.

The media monolith has no competition anymore, and they all tell the same lies at the same time now. That makes identifying and exposing those lies easier, which the alternative media have done.

I remember 18% for the higher risk borrowers. Being young and dumb at the time? I fit that category. In hindsight, I think those early years , along with a couple of the wise people I had in my life, helped shape my attitude towards debt. One of the attractive things about young Mrs. Sock was that she shared that attitude of debt avoidance.

I think the media has always served at the behest of the left without any shred of ethics or objectivity. I just think the problem now is that the left has never been this radical and full of hatred---for the country, and for those who disagree with them. And so the messaging from the media becomes more vitriolic, more inflammatory, and even more dishonest than ever.

Lindell is a badger, and won't stop. He is also a complete and utter madman who found recovery when his dealer cut him off, and his dealer brought in all the other dealers and told him they weren't going to sell to him either.
