A short video of the cute baby hippo saved by the Cincinnati Zoo.

A mommy cheetah and her babies. The cheetah cubs look very different from adults.

Meow, feed me. Meow, feed me, meow, or else.

Rescuing a baby seal who got separated from her pod by thousands of miles.

Raccoon problems.

A lot of the videos I'm linking come from this account that posts good videos... but with a hectoring, why-can't-we-be-nice-like-animals-are tone.

Try not to read his captions. They'll just ruin your mood.

He's European anyway so he has nothing to say of any importance.

I mean, his hectoring about People Being the Real Animals doesn't really make sense when he's also posting videos about kindly humans creating giant prosthetics so that a three-legged elephant can walk. But even there, he's attacking humans.

Sharing a meal.

Crow sharing some bread with a mouse.

Compilation of pets being clever. If you get bored, skip to the fluffy dog near the end.

The pitcher is still waiting for this one to come down.

Reindeer migration.

Ungawa!

Deer crossing.

Is it fun to tickle a baby armadillo? You better believe it is, Jack!

Are you my mommy?

kidonkid.jpg

More animals rescuing other animals.

🎵 Playin' with the boys... 🎶

Sigh. I didn't really do anything to enjoy this summer.

He's the villain in "M" but that's kind of an intense film. I know he did lots of other work, but those are the ones I own and watch frequently.

20 I'm watching a YouTube video about gnosticism. Apparently the 2nd century gnostics believe women could not be saved so, according to one of their alternate gospels Jesus said he would make a woman (possibly Mary Magdalene) into a man. And that made her eligible for Heaven.
Early transgender mania.

21 The Amorous Hippopotamus, who's love song we know
Is now married and father of ten.
He whistles, "Gee Willickers" as he watches them grow and longs to be single again
No more will he wile, on the banks of the Nile
Which Aswan has flooded the spring.
With baby hippopotami, in silken pyjamani, no more will he teach them to sing:

Mud! Mud! Beautiful Mud! Nothing quite like it for soothing the blood!
And now shall we follow, down to the hollow, and there we will wallow in mud, beautiful mud!

101 Ive gotten through season 3 of Vikings, since there's nothing else to watch, and heard good things about it..... but how did this crap make it even this long?

So much of it is basically a crappy battle, followed by 40 minutes of bickering, repeated for every episode. A ton of it is just Christian hate porn, where the creators are just getting a hardon over the idea of murdering and torturing Christians. And then, unlike say Game of Thrones or Last a Kingdom, this isn't supposed to be fantasy, but basically it's making the Vikings like super heroes, where 3 take out entire brigades of English or French, not to mention how it later becomes the Yas Queen Viking show, where a 120lbs woman takes out 50 soldiers single handedly.

102 Went in for the follow-up on the CTA scan of my aorta. There's no enlargement on the descending side and all the way down. So it's just at the ascending part above the heart and even that is only slight. No restrictions on activities.

There is a place for all of God's Creatures. Usually, right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

And I'd rather put meat I've shot and processed into the freezer, as compared to questionable cuts of store-bought bovine. Don't get me wrong, I love beef. But elk is a far superior flavor, and I'm told that moose is even better than elk.

Plus, I've enjoyed holidays serving turkeys felled by my 12ga, and what a delight they are compared to ye olde Budderbawl. Cottontail rabbit, shot in the colder months is fantastic grilled, and quail, dove, pheasant, duck and goose are all first class freezer fill.

Fishing, too. Such a huge range of species, textures, flavors. Smoked eel is *chef's kiss* sublime.

One German General famously slaughtered and butchered his paired Dobermans, when in the Siege of Stalingrad, the tables were turned and the Germans became the besieged. Having consumed not only all their rations, but the horses, down to the harnesses and other tack, said General shot first one dog, and then some days later, the second. I'll hope never to know a hunger of such desperation as that.

Yup! At this point you have to figure that if a boat full of Haitians heading for Miami was blown out to sea and after weeks finally made it to Martha's Vineyard, before the boat got within two miles of shore, all of the police would be ordered to get shotguns and slugs, board fast fishing boats, then go and riddle the hull of the Haitian boat to keep it from making a landing.

You don't cut steaks from brisket. You slow-roast brisket in either a side-firebox, smoker type pit, or directly over a very low heat direct bbq, but with the handful of mesquite fire placed off to the side of the pit, and not directly under the meat. Six, eight, ten hours. Depends on the size of the cut, and the nature of the cooker. This is where a "Pit Master" competition BBQ chef really can help, they know all the designs, and can coach you through building the right fire, regulating the temperature and "timing" correctly for the cut of meat. Done perfectly, it'll be so tender as to fall apart on the fork itself. I can't teach you how but there are many who can. Ask your butcher for some referrals.

M is a great movie; the opening scenes of the missing girl, and her panic-stricken mother, are heart-rending. One of the things in the movie that I found surprising was the extent to which forensic investigation techniques had advanced in the early 30s.

185 M is a great movie; the opening scenes of the missing girl, and her panic-stricken mother, are heart-rending. One of the things in the movie that I found surprising was the extent to which forensic investigation techniques had advanced in the early 30s.

Techniques kind of had to, after the horrible example of the Dreyfus Affair.

188 You don't cut steaks from brisket.

271 I defrosted and rearranged the upstairs and downstairs freezers last week. Lots of frozen 2021 beef has been hitting the grill.
I should have room for some nice, tasty venison before the supply chain goes ta-tas up.

Surely off topic... and im probably too late for TJM or MPPPP... does anyone have any thoughts on a great Peter Lorre movie? I'm thinking I'd like to introduce the missus to him this weekend. I've only seen him in Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon. Would love suggestions.

283 I've never butchered my own deer, but I attended a NH Conservation event and am pretty sure I wouldn't hack it up too badly. The key is getting rid of the "pink skin" separating the pieces of meat. Gamey, otherwise.

284 I am always late to the party to share my vast cat knowledge, because it’s power y’all! But cheetah babies, like Serval babies, and by default low gen Savannah babies, are born with baby fuzzies. They shed that out in a few weeks and reveal their polka dots. Why yes, I am a blast at parties, why do you ask?
