The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

The news out of Balmoral Castle is not good. Queen Elizabeth II, 96 years old and the longest reigning monarch in British history, is under her physicians' care out of "concern." Supposedly her family is converging on her summer home in Scotland to be by her side. The traditional understatement of the crown's public comments would suggest that her health is failing and the end of her reign, and possibly the end of the monarchy is near.

We fought a war to get out from under the British monarchy's jackboot, and I have nothing laudatory to say about a political system based on the divine right to rule. The concept of a "Royal Family" is offensive, and a cursory examination of the dissolute products of those families will bolster my contention that genetics is an awful way to choose one's rulers.

But the United Kingdom is holding on by a thin and worn thread, and it is entirely possible that the only thing that tethers this sadly decayed country to any semblance of sanity is the solid, private, very British Queen Elizabeth II. In a sea of stupidity and vapidness, her hold on the monarchy and the British psyche was strong. The next in line is the moronic Charles, whose claim to fame is coarse sexual banter with his mistress, awful taste in architecture, and a willingness to minimize the glories of Western civilization and embrace every crackpot 3rd world idea over his country's magnificent history.

The reign of Charles will be the final nail in the coffin of British greatness. The Magna Carta, the creation of Great Britain, the industrial revolution, the incredible Indian adventure, the Napoleonic wars, World War I, World War II...all lead to sordid and sleazy and stupid Charles, the epitome of inbred idiocy.

James I was called "the wisest fool in Christendom." Perhaps Charles will be "The stupidest fool in Christendom?" It is difficult to imagine anything he would do that would support and defend his nation's glorious history. But I can certainly imagine some sort of chaotic post-modern British monarchy, filled with groveling apologies to...everyone. Will it be a matter of years, or perhaps months, before a minaret is built atop Buckingham palace? Will Nelson's Column be torn down and replaced with some horrid monument to Britain's cruelty to the savages?

Regardless...I have a grudging respect for Elizabeth, and I hope that her last days or months or years are peaceful, and that she is given the respect that she has earned for her many years as the queen.

There's really only one job he ever *can* perform, he's been waiting his entire life to start at it, and he can't take it on until his mother kicks the bucket. That alone would inspire a bit of kookiness in lots of people (though others have certainly handled it better than he has).

I've often felt it would be better, for Britain and for the royals themselves, if the monarchy did still have a degree of genuine political power. I know we're not supposed to think that way, but if people like Charles had some actual responsibilities beyond ribbon-cutting and smiling for the camera, it might do everyone a bit of good.

184 144 Rome did pretty well with the Caesar choosing their successor from the best of Rome they could find rather than a direct lineage from their own family. This was part of the fiction that separated them from being kings (even if they were in all but name). Eventually they started just doing the bloodline thing and it all went down hill pretty fast.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 08, 2022 11:20 AM (Ivdso)
Now hold on there. The Antonine dynasty chose their heirs until Marcus Aurelius chose his own son, Commodus.
EVERY other emperor chose his own blood relation or married off a daughter to some dude or whatever.
The empire only got slightly lucky that Nirva was childless and so chose Trajan. Trajan's wife probably chose Hadrian (Trajan might have been shaky on the gay technocrat.) Hadrian murdered a bunch of people and then chose Marcus Aurelius, then engaged in twelfth dimensional fuckery in order to try to put a placeholder in place for when Marcus came of age, Antoninus Pius. None of these men had a blood son. Trajan for whatever reason (busy man.) Hadrian was a flaming gay. Marcus DID have children and chose the horrifically bad Commodus to succeed him.

237 They did the bloodline thing among the emperors until Nerva. He started the "pick a GOOD successor" routine, and it lasted for about 75 years. Marcus Aurelius screwed up and named his son (who as an emperor would have made a decent gladiator) as his successor, and that was when the whole business began to slide.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at September 08, 2022 11:25 AM (J2vNu)

True enough, but you can read too much into that. It was more by accident that you got the Five Good Emperors, because four of them happened not to have children. If Trajan or Hadrian had had a son, he would have named him as heir early on, just as Marcus Aurelius did.

Gladiator notwithstanding, no emperor was going to deny his son the throne. Even Augustus had every intention of appointing his son as heir if he'd had one to make it to adulthood, and he's the one who invented the whole "I'm not really a monarch" fiction. Marcus Aurelius couldn't have acted any differently than he did.

That isolated the wrong guy, Constantius. Not because Constantius was going to kick the whole thing down, but because his son was Constantine- who was dispossessed, but brilliant and extremely popular amongst the troops. Not a smart move.

271 and he's the one who invented the whole "I'm not really a monarch" fiction.

It was a constant concern in Rome. They had kings very early on, then rejected that for the republic. When Caesar rose to power, people were very upset that he was acting like a king, even if he didn't have the name.

Caesar had no son so he had to pick a successor (Octavian, who became Augustus) from several choices.
Augustus, possibly their best emperor, chose a son in law as a successor, not his own blood. He might have picked his son if he'd had one, but he did not.

And it turns out I was wrong. The new law is only for residents of the state *outside* of the city where there was previously no rifle licensing required at all. So they just took what was already law in NYC and made it state-wide, which means I'm already licensed.

So for the first time in recorded history living in New York City actually pays off... in that we already put up with so much shit that the laws people in normal parts of the country think of as unbearable, enraging government bureaucratic meddling into your personal life, to us in NYC it's nothing. 427 Every system sucks, every government is flawed and awful in its own way. The ideal, perfect form of government is an absolute monarch who is just, good, and honest but even they can and usually will corrupt, and when they die, who do you trust to get that power? Its all a mess and all eventually fails because we're sinful human beings living under the curse.

God gave Israel the theocracy which if they'd just done what he said, would have worked out great, but they rejected it and wanted a king instead. They had like 3 good kings over hundreds of years.

England has had maybe five good rulers, two of which were women. They've had 61 kings over about 1200 years, and very few were worth a crap. Every few centuries someone invaded and replaced them with new blood because the old blood had gotten so rotten.

As much as I'm inclined to respect the Queen for various reasons, she still oversaw the actual destruction of the UK. Nothing that any following ruler does will matter - their fate is already sealed.

482 Americans tend not to understand the concept of a constitutional monarchy, as practised by the UK. The Queen is head of state and therefore sovereignty lies with her. But she does not rule. The country's government is run by the PM (this was settled in the English Civil War, and has been strengthened many times since). The PM is head of government.

The US currently has Brandon as both the head of state and the head of government. Is that optimal?

And the US cannot point fingers at the UK for suffering under hereditary rule. How about the Gores, Clintons, Roosevelts, Adams, Romneys, Bushes, and Kennedys? I currently live in the Duchy of Dingell and I earnestly wish that I was not ruled by someone who inherited the position.

511 The Queen is head of state and therefore sovereignty lies with her. But she does not rule. The country's government is run by the PM (this was settled in the English Civil War, and has been strengthened many times since). The PM is head of government.

The monarchy has significantly more power than they use, though. There is a lot the Queen could do that she does not choose to.

funny if true - the only thing Save America PAC has done lately is really, really piss off Liz Cheney by running polls showing how much her Wyoming constituents despised her. Well I guess that's a criminal offense these days.

She handled it graciously.

Harry was on the ground in armored recon vehicles in A-stan, and his initial deployment was kept quiet. If memory serves, some douchecanoe Limey journalist broke the story that he was in country, including his general location and unit. MoD shit bricks and yanked him out on the first flight back to England.

Did another stint in Apaches later on.

I'm thinking that if MoD hadn't got their panties in a wad, he'd have turned out to be okay as Liz's successor.

I'll ask it again. What could she (or GB as a whole) have done? Continue to fight insurrections around the globe with an economy that could no longer finance their military and which their own people no longer supported? Yeah, that sounds excellent.

527 ChuckieBoy was born the same year as me. Sadly, while I passed through the '60s and '70s pretty much untouched by the insanity of those years, Chuckie did not. I honestly don't see much ahead for his reign except ultra liberal whinging and mindless virtue signaling.

As best I know, E2, along with her mother, has been the only thing holding the British monarchy together. Older Bits remember the Windsors' strength and steadfastness during the worst of WW II. And E2 has unfailingly upheld those virtues. Her kids, though, are unmitigated disasters -- except maybe Anne. After her second marriage, Anne pretty much straightened up. But Anne is not in the line of succession because she, while she was born first, she wasn't a male. So Chuckie the Idiot it is.

That's a good comparison. And supports my growing belief that Democracy, Sacred (*Spit*) or not, is overrated. You need 2 elements for it to work IMHO:
- a virtuous people (somebody smarter than me pointed that out centuries ago), and
- a reasonably educated people.
We have neither.
